- In this episode we take a look at charging your powerstation with using batteries you already have. That's right, using power tool batteries. Using a combination of power tool batteries and USB-C power delivery we take a look at sending up to 100 watts of power into the Bluetti EB3A Solar generator portable power station.

It sure has, if you decide to add a battery make sure you fuse the cable coming into the Bluetti. It can't pull any more than 200 watts as it will cause it to overload or even over cook some electronics. I connect mine to a cigarette barrel socket for ease and portability

I am a RC hobbyist and run RC boats, trucks, planes, and all sorts of RC. I have about 10 packs or more of 5000mah LIPOS just sitting around for 6 months at a time and I am planning on using them to extend this solar storage device. They are 3s each pack meaning 11.1v and ~ 12.60 fully charged. Im planning on using ALL my 10 packs of 5000mah LIPOs to extend this SOLAR station capacity by hooking up 2 x 5000mah packs in series to make 25.2V and adding a low battery alarm on both battery packs balance leads to prevent over discharge bellow 3.5v per cell.. They are a VERY HIGH AMP discharge rate batteries (up to 70c discharge rate per cell. They cost about $60-100 a pack!! ) I am going to have to make a custom cable using the car charger cable to make an EC5 to 8mm barrel conversion.

For the batteries that are within the voltage range of the EB3A input, it would make more sense just to directly connect the battery rather than go through USB-C. The USB-C adapter on the battery is doing some voltage conversion to hit whatever voltage target is negotiated by the USB to barrel jack adapter. I 3D printed a connector clip for my Ryobi 18V batteries that just connects directly to the + and - of the battery, then plugged that straight into the EB3A. It started pulling 100-120W from the battery and did so for a while before it depleted the battery. I think this is the most efficient way to use a tool battery for this purpose as there's no extra power conversion involved.
Next step though is how to use my 40V Ryobi lawn mower batteries for the same purpose, as 40V is above the 28V input rating. I don't have any buck converters capable of a 40V input right now, but they probably exist.

You'd be relying on the Ryobi battery to do all the protection in this scenario. The author alluded to the Ryobi batteries having a decent amount of protection circuitry, but do they have a thermal cutout?
Yes this is exactly what i was thinking, great to see someone else post this, I also would love to use my 40v batteries to boost my power station.
I think the issue alot of people have is that most tool batteries do not have built in battery protection. Ryobi is one of the only ones. If you direct connect and dont disconnect soo enough you will damage your battery with most brands.

You can extend the runtime of this unit without the USB-C in/out module. Instead, just get one of the many power wheels diy attachments (amazon has many) and wire it directly into the DC7909 port. Worked fine for me and I was able to get about 150w input.

Just before watching this video, I ordered a power wheels DIY attachment for my DeWalt 20v batteries to be used with my Eb3a. I'm hoping I don't have the same charging difficulties with that arrangement that DeWalt had in this video.
Wow, not for nothing Im focused on this Bluetti model because I have it, but these other power tool batteries, I never knew these tool batteries have all these accessories to them. I am a Makita Dude, and I will search Makita more to see if there's power adaptive accessories to add to their badass batteries. Much respect to Millwauki for having that 115 v adapter accessory to its line, and Dewalt, and Ryobi.
How about from Milwaukee 175W AC port?
So it sounds like the Milwaukee topoff is the best out of the box.
I’ve ran Makita forever and currently have a bunch of Makita batteries. But I stopped letting that stop me from buying the right Milwaukee or DEWALT tool for the job. It’s all interchangeable with the right adaptor.

You would use this if there was a power outage at your home... like in a tornado damaged area.. etc... and if you have the solar panel you can keep it charged. Otherwise til you need it you keep it charged with your home electric plug ins... and as you are demonstrating also recharge with some of yur power tool power packs...(I live in Kentucky.. had bad tornado and win damage in our state this past year.. )
I own a Bluetti EB3A and a Jackery Explorer 240 is there a way to connect them in series parallel to each other?
I have some Makita clone 18/21V batteries. I also have a 2port USB adaptor for it, but it's only capable of 5V, 3A DC output. Can I connect my battery directly + to + and - to - with a custom made cabke with barrel connector? Will the station pull off only what the 18V 4A/h battery can give back or will it pull 200W all together? Want to use them to expend my eb3a little battery without causing any troubles...
I used a DC7909 connector, bought from ebay and meant for charging a Lenovo laptop i think, which takes 100w PD and charged my EB3A using PD from an Omnicharge 25600 mAh power pack through the MPPT port on the EB3A

I have this heavy Shumaker DSR 12 v battery jump starter with the cigarette female outlet ..its dual for output / input, just wondering if this heavy battery which I don't think is lithium, perhaps its a (non spill) lead acid battery, if thats being the case, is it safe to use on the Bluetti EB3A?

Hey, what's up?! I wanted to ask if anybody knows whether it's possible to connect a 20000mAh powerbank (74Wh) via a modified cable that will give an output of 12V to this Bluetti? And if it's safe to do so?
Why not use the USB-C port is that not input and output 100w? just plug the DeWalt DC unit straight in?
take another type c to barrel and plug it into the solar station then plug in the dewalt battery. it looks like dewalt needs to cycle its power to keep it going. I don't know if it will work that way but it seems like it
What I would like to know is how you hook up a 12v deep cycle battery to boost run time and will solar charge the Bluetti as well as the deep cycle battery?

The dewalt battery seems to be the 60 volt variant. The controller on an EB3A is only designed to handle input voltages of 12-28VDC. Cheers
But the USBC adapter makes the DC output. USBC PD should on this device should deliver about 100 watts out. 20v 5 amps.
That makes sense in theory, and if it was actually true in practice, using that same battery, the EB3A would charge when it saw the 20 volts. The point I'm making is that in that particular circumstance, it's very likely that if in line voltage were measured at the barrel plug just before attempting to present it into the eb3a, it may either show a voltage that's out of range (12-28VDC is in range) or maybe it shows no voltage at all. If a correct ranged and stable voltage is present at that barrel plug, when the plug is presented into the units 7909 (8mm) input, it will read that voltage and charge, just like with the other batteries. There is obviously an issue with that battery in particular, and a voltage check on the plug would verify the issue. I agree that the plug should output around 20VDC, if you want it to work in this scenario, but it's not, because if it did, the unit would charge.

@@LegendaryPanther111 Good point, not all usb-c pd power supplies are created equal. The Milwaukee usb-c pd power supply is better suited for this demonstration video than the Dewalt one. Also, I have a Bluetti power station with usb-c pd port and it works fantastic, but my Goal Zero pd port is poop in comparison just like the Dewalt only working on some devices.
If you buy one you will need something to extend the run time since they run out of power quick!
So you can't use dewalt battery to charge it...?
Question; what happens If a 200W load is used on the cigarrete DC plug? It's max. power is just 134W so would not want to cause permanent damage to the station.
It will just run it down real fast.
Why do I use it when I have 120 AC ?..... upc function for satellite internet, I have two of them ,the second one performs the same function for a diesel heater...

Running the Milwaukee Top Off as an inverter to charge via AC is not a bad idea.
Since the top off can only supply 175 watts, getting that energy into the Bluetti which can supply 600 could make sense.

EGO is coming out with a USB C product that will in/out 100 Watts. The product is called PAD5000. It should come out this quarter.

I use the milwaukee top off method but it only works for a few then it turns off. It doesnt work consistently
weird, that's unfortunate. Maybe the build on all the bluetti's aren't all very well controlled.

What you’re doing by plugging in 2 power sources that aren’t designed to be paralleled into a Y-cable is dangerous. If the voltages are slightly different, it could send current from one source to the other and if one of them doesn’t have reverse current protection it will cause damage.
That’s probably true. Especially if no diodes are involved. It was mainly for testing the dewalt charger to get it going.
@bruhaha - would it still be dangerous if I was attempting to do the following:
Take USB-C PD out of a Kohree 100W solar panel AND take the 5521 out of that same Kohree 100w panel - Y combine both of those and adapt into the 7709 solar input on the EB3A?
(I’m only considering this because reviewers have shown a 20%+ gain in efficiency when using both usb C and 5521 out of that panel…)
@@mesyousr7411 Without knowing how the circuits are designed it is impossible to tell you the answer. However, as for danger since it is a solar panel with no stored energy unlike a battery or mains power, the risk of fire or explosion is going to be much lower. The solar panel will probably be fine but you risk damaging the USB-C circuit or dongle.

@@bru_haha I asked this of another person, and they mentioned that the usb C is max 5v and the dc is 18-24v max, so they felt a y splitter would likely fry the onboard solar circuit. Does this sound very likely? *with your best guess, obviously without knowing how it is wired - but that kind of “back flow” of voltage might be likely with a Y splitter? Thanks again
I mean… power tool batteries aren’t THAT much cheaper per Wh, so I’d rather spend a couple more bucks on a bigger power station than degrade my power tool batteries for this use (and accept that somewhat janky setup in addition).
I guess in a pinch it’s an acceptable solution, but not more than that either.
PD needs 3 factors to work: 1. A compatible power source 2. A cmpatible device 3. Compatoble cable.
The power source and the device will agree on what power thatvthey will share, the cable will limit the amount of power thatvthey can share.
The problem is that EB3A is not a PD compatible device, it will only accept standard USB poer (5v) no matter what amount of wattage you throw in it because PD works by agrreement between power source and the device.
A PD decoy module would solve ur problem.

if im following your thought, you could, but it'd be losing power in the cycle due to conversion efficiencies.
There is no reason why you could not use the Bluettii inverter to power one or more battery chargers, like any other load. The solar input capacity of 200w charges the internal Bluetti battery very quickly because it is not large. You could, in theory, charge the drill batteries during the day, when there is ample solar power to charge both the BLUETTI and drill batteries, and then use the drill batteries at night to add capacity/ extend run times.
Yes, I just try P117 charger and 6Ahr. It use 100W.
Skip that, get a 100 Ah battery.
And if you don't have the strength to lift 100 ah batteries, get 50 ah which weigh @ 12 lbs and parallel connect two for same effect.
I just posted a video on my channel. I have hooked up 6 golf cart batteries to inverter that runs my whole RV but I plug my BLUETTI into outlet coming from my inverter lead acid setup and if BLUETTI is at 100% it only pulls 200 watts from my 400 watt window ac unit from my lead acid bank. Also once inside of rv hit whatever temp i set it to my ac unit turns off and then will come back on when it hits another temp i set it to on wireless remote. Check my video I show it being doing.

You know what it is it’s safety features it’s so you don’t kill yourself accidentally it’s stupid microchips in spots where microchips don’t need to be it’s 12 it’s voltage it’s not trying to adjust your voltage to your cell phone that’s why they put the chips in there when doing 100 W it doesn’t need to be in there it you want the dumbest as possible you want it where it lands voltages through cable you do not want chips inside the cable regulation voltage you do not want that you want 12 V and dirty slamming into the battery the voltage regulator inside the unit will take care rest of the other stuff without it the Dewalt taken all freaking out it’s like I don’t see voltage

Just ditch the USB-C . It's a complicated protocol that you have shown is flaky. It also is inefficient. Just connect the battery directly to the input of the EB3A.
Unfortunately, the eb3a will drain the power tool battery below 12 volts and then your power tool battery will be bricked. Use the adapter so your battery will be operational for years and years without problems.
