The bottom shield is usually attached to the board with a tab on the left. Somehow your tab was pinched below when it is supposed to grab both the board and the top shield. Also, your heat sink had one more screw than usual. One of those holes is usually empty. The shielding is for RF/EMI, though it also sinks heat thanks to that “stubborn” screw you removed. Japanese hardware doesn’t have the shielding so it’s definitely not intended for heat… just FCC compliance (blocks electromagnetic interference).
I have a Model 1 Genesis, and need to access the LED to replace it. The "ring" that has "High Definition Graphics" on it that also covers the LED seems to be glued to the case. Is there a safe way to get that glue off of there without damaging the rest of the case?
Yes. Apply some isopropyl alcohol to the glue with a q-tip, you can use 70% or higher, use 99% if you have it. After the glue has had a few moments to soak in the alcohol if it doesn't release naturally grab a toothpick and a hair dryer. Heat up the glue and gently pick at it with the toothpick. You need to be aware to not scratch the case with the toothpick and to not get the plastic too hot with the hair dryer so if you are not 100 % confident in applying the heat just keep trying to soak the glue in alcohol and gently separate it form the console case. I have seen the plastic take on a slightly lighter color after application of the alcohol too but it's on the inside and is only cosmetic and mild. Have also only seen it once so could have been a fluke.
On this one the LED was soldered to the board. I don't have another model 1 to compare it to unfortunately. The reason it broke was corrosion on the wire. It looked like some moisture had gotten to the board at the point.
@@mastercontrolprogram82 Sega was never really known for their design decisions and they always did seem to skimp on internals so it makes complete sense they skipped adding a header to save on cost. Thank you for confirming another model 1!
Thank you for your help I cleaned around the cartridge slot with and used a computer can air to remove dust through the system but other than that no through cleaning the system so I can bless someone with the Genesis model 1 as I have more than 1 model which I also have a Genesis Model 2. I used dish soap with some paper towel after using alcohol with some cotton swabs and isopropyl with alcohol paper towel on metal parts as I didn’t deep cleaning but it will help to prevent straining from the dust I removed because not even opening a console to remove dust will make it age even faster.

All good points, thank you for pointing them out!
Excellent teardown!

Can the LED cable be unplugged from the board? Why did it break for you?

@@runningretro541 I couldn't unplug it on my model 1 either. After applying quite some force I let it be to not break it.

7:20 do you know offhand if the cartridge slots are interchangeable between model 1 and model 2? I'm guessing yes, but not 100% sure. Thanks 😊
Honestly I'm not sure. In the process of moving currently but if I can dig up one of each model I will look and let you know.
@@runningretro541 appreciate it 😊
We have the same screwdriver set 🤣
It's a great screwdriver set. I keep thinking about getting a second one so I have one to travel.
