Cosplay syndrome is the best way to explain it, you nailed it.
I don't know what the obsession with live action adaptations is. To a large extent, the medium is what informs decisions the creative process. You don't write a movie and make the design decisions a comic book writer would, and if you're making a video game you don't make the decisions a novel writer would make. You don't use cartoon dialogue in a live action story. It just doesn't work. You play to the strengths of your medium. The anime isn't going anywhere, and it will always be the superior version of the story. These adaptations aren't "art", they're like little fan projects. You're not watching One Piece, you're watching what amounts to a theme park performance of One Piece. Like those little plays at Disney World. There's no vision to the project, it's just the TV equivalent of popcorn. Very little nutrition, but it'll keep you chomping and chewing for a while.

The thing with IGN is that there is no consistency when it comes to a consensus in their review board, different people have different standards, yes, but there needs to be consistency with giving fair reviews and ratings to TV shows, video games, movies, etc. This is a big reason why more and more people don't pay attention to critics anymore.

It's like they read basic descriptions of the characters and wrote new ones based off of that. They got the "cool swordsman" part of Zoro down, but instead of a hot-blooded, intimidating, single-mindedly driven figure with a sadistic sense of humour who gives harsh advice when Luffy needs it, we get this sarcastic, eye-rolling guy who's needs to be re-inspired by Tony Robinson Luffy. And Zoro's not even the most egregious example.
The fact that the writers are huge fans and still got the characters so off - especially when the characters are easily the strongest and most important part of East Blue - is perhaps the worst part about this. To see all that passion and effort put into something so sub-par hurts as a fan. I even like the casting, but the shit they were given to work with... man.

While I liked SOME of the costume (Buggy) and prop design from the trailer. I opted to pass on it because I knew there's no way it'd even come close to the anime in terms of appeal or asthetic. Plus the way they showed Luffy's actor talking rubbed me the wrong way, I mean as a fan of the source material I have absolutely no way in hell that Luffy knows what "tension" means let alone how to pronounce it.
One of my friends asked me to watch it with them and I said no because I'd rather gnaw off my own arm than watch another Netflix live-action anime adaptation to which they replied "But m-muh Oda" among other less than savoury comments. As a fan of One Piece I have to say that yes, the fanbase is absolutely insufferable. The whole point of the story is lighthearted adventure, the romance of exploring unknown frontiers and repeatedly pushing the boundaries on what is and isn't possible.
Oda's character designs, use of colour and themes that yo-yo between serious and silly are what made One Piece stand out as one of my favourite pieces of media. But saying that I had no faith in the live action and therefore knew I wouldn't enjoy it and would probably bring down said friend's experience by sharing in it, I'm somehow an idiot for not believing that it's good because Oda had to expressly tell production that the crew mates were not to be in relationships with each other.
This is all to say nothing about the fact that the series ends the entire East Blue arc in the span of one season. The pacing of that alone would give me whiplash considering how much runtime the anime got out of it while introducing us to the universe, characters and some of the locations in the ever-expanding world it's set in. Going at the same pace they'd likely reach Wano within 7 seasons provided they actually make it that far. But like with Netflix's cavalcade of failing shows has taught me, maintaining quality is far from their strong point.
I'm all for letting people enjoy what they enjoy, but to be recipient to such knuckle-scraping neanderthal level opinions for committing the crime of not believing in Netflix, a company that has only gone downhill since finding success, was simply not worth the time I spent talking about it with them. Just another example of fandom being an awful thing when critical thinking is thrown out the window for review purposes. God forbid anyone with a shred of common sense view something through the lens of critique.

    • @joeboah6040

I could not agree more. Just the sheer fact that they made their own Garp storyline instead of focusing on the source material and putting in things that matter, makes the show bad. You can't make the East Blue in just 8 episodes, it's just impossible, the pacing was too fast for one piece.
This is just a simple example of many of why this ''show'' is bad.
(By the way you are the only person I have seen mention the thing I have noticed ever since the trailer, LUFFY WOULD NEVER SAY ''I sense a little bit of tension amongst the crew''. He would probably just laugh or not hear it at all, Luffy is dumb, and that is what makes him Luffy. They also made the circumstances in which Luffy and Zoro meet different, but in the canon material Zoro would be pretty on par with being a crew member since he agreed to it and believes in Luffy after what he saw him do. Anyways, I hope you have a good day my friend cause you and I seem to be quite similar)

I don't think they even got any of the characters right, despite their efforts. East Blue is easily the weakest arc in the whole story, but it establishes the main characters and their dynamics almost perfectly. I don't think anyone could watch the LA and tell you what the core or each character is and how they fit into the crew dynamic, which you can easily do by reading or watching the original. They sanded off the rough edges (like Luffy's selfishness and bluntness, Nami's greed and temper, Zoro's hotheadness and sadism, Ussop's cowardice and self-agrandisement, Sanji's obstinance and lack of conviction among other things), made them spout marvel-esque quips and lame platitudes that you would never find in the source material, and completely missed that spirit that made them such compelling characters in the source material - which is the drive and ambition they all have. That raw tenacity, free-spiritness and self-belief that are the soul of the story. It feels like the LA straw hats are following Luffy just because "they might as well". Sanji and Ussop are done the dirtiest in that respect, they're barely even characters in their own arcs, but even Zoro is lacking his core character trait, which is his insane drive. Luffy himself is portrayed as some kind of self-help guru, and because they constantly made him an underdog for the sake of cheap tension he just comes across like he's full of hot air. I remember hearing that some viewers who were unfamiliar with the source material were surprised at how easy Luffy defeats Arlong in the end, because the episodes prior do not give you the sense that he's cartoonishly strong. Much of that is probably down to budget, but that's just another reason the LA was a bad idea. The characters at the heart of the story were perfectly crafted for a cartoon world. I think in the main the writers of the LA just suck as well though. Oda outclasses them when he was barely in his twenties. I can only imagine the Japanese translation of the script they gave him was much better because it's difficult to accept that he signed off on this shit. I guess even he feels the pressure of wasting a big studios money. The praise this show has been getting is crazy. I think it goes to show that you can be a fan of something without ever considering why you like the thing in the first place, so when you're presented something digestable that seems like the thing you like on the surface level you just accept it as being the same as the original thing you liked. Bit of a garbled sentence I know, but hopefully you get my point. Even though the LA cannot hold a candle to the original, criticism of it is treated like criticism of the original (and this isn't to say the original doesn't deserve criticism, only that it's more understandable why someone might get mad about it.)
Anyway, I think the tide of public opinion will turn in our direction sooner or later, especially with the same people writing season 2. Here's hoping they turn it around. I doubt they will, but a man can dream

So, about this whole 'masterpiece' thing with the Netflix "One Piece" - it's not as cut and dry as it seems. Yeah, you'll come across video titles throwing around 'masterpiece,' but if you actually dive into those videos, you'll find they're not just glossing over the issues. They point out the flaws, but still, they're vibing with the show overall. It's not about being flawless; it's more about the show hitting the right notes despite its imperfections.
And about the casting - Inaki Godoy as Luffy is just nailing it. He's really captured the essence of Luffy. Makenyu's take on Zoro? It's getting mixed reviews, but there's potential. Emily Rudd's Nami and Taz Skylar's Sanji? Both are bringing something special to the table. The show's visuals, like the Zoro and Mr. 7 fight? Pretty impressive stuff. They've done a solid job on the set and cinematography.
But, let's be real - the show isn't without its flaws. Yet, the strengths come from how much passion they've put into it. It's getting new fans into the original anime and offering a fresh perspective for the die-hards.
And here's the thing about adapting stuff - saying something only works in one medium is a bit narrow-minded. Look at "Guardians of the Galaxy" - we got emotionally attached to a talking tree and raccoon, for crying out loud! And Thor, a Norse god superhero? Totally works. It's all about how it's done. Same goes for "The Witcher" - from books to games to a hit series. It’s about the execution, not the medium.
Wrapping this up, Netflix's "One Piece" is more than a faithful adaptation. It's an effort to bring this epic story to a wider audience, and it's doing a decent job at it. Fans aren't just throwing blind praise; they're recognizing the good and the areas for improvement.
But honestly, I think the reviewer in this video is kind of missing the mark. Feels like they're the ones with the bias. It's totally cool to have different opinions, but let's not ignore why fans - flaws and all - are actually enjoying the show.

True story, my parents have never understood my love for anime or manga so when this got good reviews I hesitantly watched the first episode with them in order to hopefully win them over. My mom got up to do chores halfway through and my dad fell asleep shortly after. It was surprisingly terrible acting given the reviews, and most of the nuanced character moments and scenarios which make one piece unique were removed to make the episode shorter. Despite having read the manga multiple times and Essentially earning a UA-cam PHD in one piece I will NOT be watching the rest of the show…it’s just shit 😭

Currently watching the anime & it’s currently one of my favorites. I’ve only seen the trailers and clips on UA-cam of this adaptation and I’ve hated what I’ve seen so far. When it comes to live action anime adaptations, I thought Alita Battle Angel and Speed Racer were pretty good, but I’ve hated every other adaptation I’ve seen. Disliked Death Note, disliked Bleach, and especially disliked Dragonball Evolution. Had a lot of people recommended me this show & I always say that I have absolutely zero interest in watching it. Same goes with live action Cowboy Bebop. Haven’t seen it yet, but I’d like to keep it that way. Also, with the announcement of Season 2 in development, I have so many fears over what live action Chopper will look like.
Netflix is just over her like “we don’t actually have to write scripts or characters. The manga and anime writers already did that for us. People will already be invested with these characters before they even watch this adaptation. Please give us your money and we will crap out another live action anime adaptation once we are able to secure the rights to it.” Wow these live action remakes are great and totally not relying on people’s love and nostalgia for the anime in the slightest.

I think this video elucidates a key difference between what we expect from real life acting and anime which is why many of us find this show jarring. I just don't think I like live action period and also don't need it for a 1000+ anime episode franchise with a manga I can reread or watch. I don't think there is much character depth in One Piece, the manga relies on world-building, humour, historical backdrops and of course the fights to generate its drama, tension, and people's love for it. The anime extends this with Japanese voice acting, he kick-ass music and particularly in the latter episodes high high-production battles faithful to the art style.

I know I’m probably setting myself up for a bad time here, but I have to be honest. I’m a MAJOR One Piece fan (it’s my favorite story of all time) and am caught up with both the manga and anime, have a ton of theories, and could not be more obsessed with the live action as well. Not only has it introduced all of my loved ones to my favorite story, it’s also incredibly fun and lighthearted to watch. My mom who is constantly making fun of anime and calling it “children’s cartoons” watched the entire thing with me and is eagerly awaiting season two. My best friend who’s only ever watched one anime in her entire life is now hooked on the story as well. How else would I have ever been able to have the pleasure of sharing One Piece with them? I’m so grateful for this adaptation, and even though it does have its flaws, they got it right in all the ways it matters. That’s not mediocrity, it’s having a deep understanding what to prioritize, what the goal is, and why people love this story. That’s what makes it great.

I am 3 episodes in just bcos friends are talking about it, and it is bad...
Especially Zoro and Nami...both are just deadpan-ing...
In the early arcs, Zoro was goofy and Nami was very expressive, especially from all the shenanigans from Luffy!!
In the live action, both have hardy any expressions at all...
And it doesn’t help when the editing often zoom in on their expressions and make their faces look bloated as if we are looking through a fish bowl...
The thing with animes is, it is not using real human actors, thus everything can and usually are, exaggerated.
Which makes it fun as we mostly watch anime’s as an temporary escape from real life stresses.
Except Luffy, the rest of the Straw Hat crew are always looking depressed and lifeless...
Zoro is talking like a zombie when he’s not fighting...
I sincerely feel that, OPLA is given great reviews, just solely because the western countries have been getting shitty movies for a long while now, to the extent that mediocrity is celebrated as greatness.

Same feeling here, I feel like I don't mind a few changes to the storyline to streamline as long as they don't cut off important plot points but it's the acting that is so horrible. I feel like if you hire any Broadway theater actors they would deliver the lines much better. When I watch Nami and Zoro, Nami is so deadpan never smiles or really laugh (her one laugh looks forced) her speech pattern is pretty flat too she could study Nami English Dub VA who is good, Zoro still naturally sounds higher pitched than the Japanese VA but he tries to go low serious but in an ASMR style which was cringey he doesn't seem to talk at a normal volume at all. Luffy like in the video, his line delivery is so flat, monotonous, mono pacing. Worst case Nami is a fan of One Piece yet she doesn't act like Nami apart the crying scene Help me. I watched their interviews and feel like they are more natural and light hearted, laughs more brightly and naturally while having fun yet this mood and personality is missing in their acting 😢 they could have talk more naturally just like the interview they had but they talk so slow and flat here. Usopp and Sanji seems okay I'm only up to Ep 4 find it hard to watch. other characters like Helmeppp nailed it the most, funny I find the most of the side characters act better than the main cast here

To be honest, this isn’t trying to insult people, but it’s been heavily documented and noted that the two most recent generations have dropped their average IQ levels by something of 70points in the last decade.
People have much shorter attention spans and are so very easily amused, so very easily entertained.
Even the slightest complexity in a show or movie and you’d see heavy amounts of people lacking any kind of understanding or meaning behind it, while they simultaneously taking songs like Cardi B’s wap and Lisa’s Rockstar and hyper analyzing them to hold truly deep and important messages.
It isn’t at all surprising that these atrocious live actions that are coming out, remaking old anime’s to ride the wave of success because they’re too lazy and inept to make their own works, have fans drooling over the content as if it’s some miraculous piece of work.
You can quite literally see comments of these shows and movies, that are genuinely bad, be positive, but only to the extent of few words, little to no explanation or detail in why said thing was good and void of independent thought.
With people barely using their own minds these days and people desperately looking for a scape goat in pretty much any situation they encounter in life, it is no wonder why there are few people criticizing and disliking this adaption.
When there really aren’t that many good shows and movies and the globe is riding the way of short term, meaningless content, you will end up with so many supporting a thing without even being able to articulate exactly why they enjoy it in the first place.

The directing and camera work is by far my biggest issue with it. Camera's were often way too close to the actors' faces from weird angles. I don't understand what kind of audience the show is supposed to appeal to either, it's way too goofy for most adults/teens while being far too gory for kids. Meanwhile existing One Piece fans would almost certainly prefer the anime over the live action anyways. So I just don't get who this is made for. And if we ignore that it's a One Piece adaptation....it's just not a good tv show. Granted I haven't seen any of the infamously bad anime adaptations, so perhaps I don't have as low standards as others. But just because it's 'less bad' doesn't justify praising it. It still doesn't compare to just about every well-received tv show released in the past 20 years (and older).
I really wanted to love this and was hoping to get my non-anime watching family into it, telling them all about how the trailers looked pretty promising. Then one of them walked in on me watching the first episode (right at that overly melodramatic Zoro part you showed no less) and immediately pointed out the strange camera work by saying "oh no, is that how the whole show is filmed??!" and all I could do was nod in pain from the cringe.

I agree with most of what you say but nearing the end of the video you went into a really bad argument, despite sites like IGN having different people reviewing shows and games, their reviews should be somewhat uniform, cause that's how you build a reliable source of critique for your audience, if every IGN reviewer is gonna have wildly different taste and opinions then there's no reason to check IGN at all, since you won't be able to tell if that reviewer's opinion and taste aligns with yours at all even if you check what score they gave to a piece of media you already consumed and agree with the score, it wouldn't matter cause there's no guarantee of a standard scoring bias, and that's failling at basic journalism.
Second you whined about people coming down on critics and reviewers, and said they shouldn't care but that's just dumb, critic scores and bad reviews can hugely affect if a piece of media will have more or less space, if more people will check it out, if investors will be interested, if the studio will give them a green light for more seasons, etc. So yeah people that care about a piece of media will and should care what critics say, cause it can just flat out kill that piece of media.
And also, despite diverging tastes and opinions, reviewers should be also objective and knowledgeble about what they're talking about, like you did when you mentioned the set and prop design for this LA, and with that in mind there's no reason IGN would ever give She Hulk a higher score than this, that show it's just objectively worse in every way from production, to the script, to the acting. Just proves how bad IGN is at journalism in general.

I would also like to point out that the lines need to be true to the source material, since the whole of the one piece story is interconnected one way or another other. Will they be cringy? yes. Will they give some weird unexpected, and perhaps uncomfortable moments? yes. They rewrote and reshoot certain scenes because the author of One Piece, deemed it necessary. Some of those changes will make people cringe, some will be for the better. For the people who get through season 1, will probably take great joy in whats to come, and there are alot of people who did. What sucks about ign is their lack of standards, since as you pointed out, there are individuals who do these ratings, and they usually put a lot of their personal prefrence into their ratings. Like just look at som of their pokemon reviews. I get that this won't be for everyone, but that goes for anime and manga in general to. Anyhow, appreciate the video, hope you check out S2 when it aires as well.

Man I have so many things to curse, but instead I'm going to start praising, the marketing department of this bomb deserves a raise, because the way they handled the emotional appeal in marketing it is a masterstroke, Oda approved this project I only say one thing to you Oda Sucker he approved all the miserable films except one of One Piece, all.
I honestly don't care if the author liked it because what he liked was the money, that Live Action bastard who has no soul didn't understand the manga and got this stupid advocacy from fans and people who never touched the original for those who are not fans, liking is less important because these people no longer have the desire, now fans of the original to say that Live Action surpassed this possibility makes me revolt, at most I would say that this Live Action is further proof that the worst adaptations are made to prove themselves to everyone and unfortunately this prevents a true reading of the essence of a work Alita battle angel Some people cursed and I saw much more of the essence than this series that cost much more per episode And another thing, being faithful doesn't make you good. Edge of Tomorrow may go unnoticed as an adaptation of a manga and light novel and it's great to use this excuse of following the original, it just proves to me that these guys think One Piece is just stupid and congratulations they managed to be more childish than the stupid manga, the supposedly inferior manga is much more mature than this LazyTown worse than LazyTown.

For me, the LA was great for what it set out to do. To adapt this concept alone is a great feat, the actors were great, the way they condensed it wasn't perfect but it worked, and the people involved deserve their flowers. But that's it. LA Luffy was never going to be 1:1 with og Luffy and that's fine but honestly speaking, the writers are walking on thin ice here and any sudden moves WILL make or break the future episodes. (If LA Luffy mentions being a good pirate one more time I'm gonna drop kick something) The only thing I want to hope for is that Oda holds a tighter leash and Netflix realizes they need more than 8 episodes. I enjoyed OPLA but as it is, considering their budget and its flaws, I don't see a future post Alabasta.
Also, I'd argue that only fans liking OPLA is wrong. There's plenty of fans who despise it and there's plenty of non-fans who saw it and are being convinced to watch the source material.

As someone who wasn't a One Piece fan, I absolutely loved the live action show, unironically. I even teared up at about 4 different points, laughed at the jokes, and rewinded on the fight scenes or camera shots just because I thought they looked cool. I even caught myself humming the soundtrack afterward because it's just really catchy. I've always heard that this is one of the greatest stories ever told, and after binging the Netflix adaptation since Thursday, I finally understand. I see why this story, it's world, and its characters impacted lives, young and old alike around the world for over 25 years. I didn't watch or read One Piece because the designs looked freakish to me and I didn't have the time. But, now this wonderful story has been brought to life with love and care by everyone who obviously put their heart and soul into it. Nearly everything in it was approved by Oda himself and I'm so glad that he picked this guy to play Luffy, he IS Luffy to me. Same to the rest of the cast. I'm glad that I get to see this story with GOOD pacing that cuts straight to the heart of it all, while still leaving in the subtle down-to-earth character moments. The set design was so immaculate that I felt like I was in this world, going on an adventure with this found family, it genuinely moved me. Even the dialogue that may seem like anime cosplay cringe. I didn't think so because from literally the first scene, the narrator says that this is "A world like no other" or something like that, so it's already telling you to suspend your disbelief. I'm not making excuses for bad acting or bad writing either because I FELT the emotion and I just can't deny that. idk maybe I'm in the honeymoon phase and someone will pick it apart later and reveal how bad it REALLY was but I still won't deny that this made me a One Piece fan

Im one of the rare ones. Someone so invested in the manga and anime the LA had absolutely no shot in pleasing me. And i knew this from the first teaser shots we got showing the set pieces. I fully agree with nearly every criticism you have. I fond it hyper annoying that the loud casual fans even shut down comments from people who clearly know more about the source material than they do, and can spot all the inconsistencies that are there, and how the changes made can actually have dramatic consequences to character motivations and how we see or empathize with situations. Zoro was stsrving for 20 days before Helmeppo stomps that rice ball into the dirt 30 times. That little girl risk desth to give it to him, so ZORO still ate it. That whole things is just gone in the LA. Instead, the guy just looks like a jerk for zero reason. And then netflix adding in completely unnecessary bs like nude Helmeppo butt. Why was that necessary at all? They’re PC’ing the characters too. Why? They already swapped Jaskier on The Witcher. Why do it to Colby and Helmeppo? Why push that change? Especially if this is supposed to be fan service and being sticking so closely to the source? The problem is, they picked and chose what was canon and what is creative introduction by their team. I call it the shiny turd who gives me motion sickness. Why so many Orbit shots during the action? Whats with the ridiculously unnecessary close ups? A can go on and on with questions on just the first episode? Why does Zoro’s feet never touch the wall when he wall runs around the pool?

    • @Timerooy
      @Timerooy 8 місяців тому

And that's probably why Oda called it Inaki and his crew, lol.
That failed Zoro wall run annoyed me too. Orbit shots was them trying to show off the continuous flow of action sequence. Close ups was them trying to make the viewers feel like part of the crew, or having the same role as interactors.

@@Timerooy i wanted to like it, but i love the oh so deeply no LA was ever gonna be good enough. I’m fine with it existence i guess. Odds finally got his real big boy windfall. Which he does deserve. But i also fear what that will do to his motivations and how that could ultimately influence decisions in the story. Other than it’s whatever. But I’m still firm in my beliefs for not liking it. I still say this needed a Peter Jackson type person to do the LA. Not just a Netflix writer fanboy that only job was to convince Oda into signing a contract and then the Netflix team took over. I dont feel this “showrunner” is actually doing anything. He doubt he has any real say at all anymore. Other than to be PR spokesman for the Netflix team.

@@JoeyTheSinic they're going for the pompous dead gaming reality in the name of LA, which I find greedy and waste of a huge budget, not like I can do better but I just can tell Oda is not happy with their approach in honoring and respecting his work, definitely not coming into terms during script discussions.

Completely agree with what you said about that scene with Zoro. They take so much away from the characters by completely removing the context of WHY they say and do certain things in the manga. Zoro (again as an example) is incredibly mentaly strong and above all a man of honor and of his word. In the manga when he is first introduced with the scene that you described he is bloody and starving but still smiling with determination, something that is completely missing from the LA where he's only a melancholy dramaqueen.

@@RemiRecluse THANK YOU! I don’t get how that logic is so hard to understand for some of these people. Its actually kinda tainted my view on culture and kinds believe some of the stories ivd heard from content makers amongst my friends. The general audience is mostly giant idiots who only care about the visuals and don’t care about the story. Makes sense now. Every mrbeast video is the same format. Every netflix anime adaptation is done the same way. But people just wanna say I’m a hater, when I’m not. Bc its easier to label someone rather than to listen to them.
I hated OPLA, but im actually excited for the new live action Avatar. Now that show looks like they actually tried and it showed.

Also, directors tend to throw temper tantrums these days when fans don't like shows. It's comical how much hypocrisy you have in you. When she hulk didn't do well they screamed "bigotry" and "misogyny". Oh and by the way the director himself called out critics. They said that the show wasn't political enough; that Luffy should have been gay and that One piece catered too much to the fans. Entertainment is a buisness and the way to make money at the box office is to cater to the audience that would be the most hypes for the coming product. Fans have the right to clap back. They are not annoying or toxic if they voice their opinions. Please learn how the entertainment buisness works.

the first two episode isn't that bad. but the rest are just dissapointment.
i still remember when oda said that he wont let netflix release one piece LA until it's meet his standard. he the one who delayed it even though it's ready to air. this statement is shown that there is something horribly wrong with the adaptation that made oda say something like that. but most of the fandom act like they dont know it. they say it's masterpiece and change is justified (even though they often complaint slight change in anime).
    .
how can they're okay with how garp potrayed in the movie? how can they okay with how zoro fight with mihawk tone down like random fight without much witness, how can they be okay with so many change in syrup arc?
and for me, the worse is how they change nami and nojiko dynamic for making nami look like a STRONG independent women. do they think nami is weak as character in manga? that nojiko tatto which share strong meaning with nami is basically meaningless and random. nojiko and the whole town just like a asshole unlike in the heartwarming truth in manga.
    .
i often talk about it with my friend and they do share same thought. it's butchered but somehow everybody like it and considered it a masterpiece without a flaw. the LA literally shit on the source material and change so many things because they dont see it fits. they literally can share the same without making it weird.

i really hate it when luffy keeps on repeating "friends" and "king of the pirates". It's not that redundant in comparison to the anime. Luffy says it like 10x an episode here in LA. Garp is just bad, i dont like him. His tone is too soft which is just out of character. There are more complaints but ill just take this for now.

and i belive he lowered his standard because it was to late to change because of the budget.

From the perspective of someone who has never watched the anime or read the manga, I absolutely loved this show. I think the show has a lot of the cliche anime stylings, but in a good way. The anime hair, the way the main character says he’s going to become _______ every 10 minutes, etc. the cinematography was outstanding, not sure that could be knocked as a negative.
From what others have said, it sounds like they toned down the main characters and let the actors make them their own, but keep their essences.
Sometimes I do think scenes are a little cringe, but then something amazing happens. Some of it is cringey in a good way I think.
This show definitely made me a One Piece fan and I’ll probably binge the manga or the anime over the winter.

I'm Glad it does. I wouldn't be able to disassociate the Original content to the show since I've been watching one piece for 20 plus years. and this arc "Romance Dawn" I've seen and read Many times over and 3 different languages I'm very familiar with.
I appreciate the love they are bringing with the show, as its running i can see improvements too. and the fact that you confirmed that people who's never seen it are liking it make me happy! I hope it keeps going and it keeps getting better. My dream is that they deliver the Iconic lines just like the Original though. everything in between can be passable with a little change. but certain Lines are Quintessential to the show.
