    This is a segment from a longer video about the complete 80 Year Evolution of the US Army Ranger Squad, and more in-depth discussion about their changing role and the overall structure of the Ranger Battalions:
    ua-cam.com/video/y21cJct1Koo/v-deo.html
    I decided to release this segment remastered with some new animations because while the modern time period is the most popular on my channel, only about 20% of viewers on the original video actually got to the modern part (probably because of its length and all the earlier time periods at the beginning).

    How do those platoons carry enough ammunition for nine belt fed guns and a Carl Gustav? Even at full strength that’s a lot of weight to haul.

      You can thank CAG for that. I don’t think there’s an official designation for that setup, but it’s outside of normal SOCOM issue due to the Department of the Army denying the issuing a full size pistol other than the M9/M17.
      Jeff Gurwitch of Modern Tactical Shooting discusses some of the issues and politics around the Glock 17 in SOCOM. If I had to guess, those were Battalion purchased outside of the procurement stage.

    Rangers are the most lethal and scalable direct action unit in the US military. Rangers are unique because they can conduct a special operations HVT raid with a platoon or less, clear a small town/valley with a company, seize an international airport with a battalion, and use the entire Regiment for large scale combat operations. During the GWOT, Rangers kill or captured more HVTs than any other unit including ST6 and Delta. A Ranger company held off Saddam’s Republican Guard at Haditha Dam which resulted in 400 EKIA and 30 tanks destroyed. In comparison to other SOF units, SEAL platoons and SF ODAs simply don’t have enough fire power to do most of the direct action stuff that Rangers do.

    • @Gearparadummies
      @Gearparadummies 20 днів тому +11

      75th Bn. has three times as many pipe hitters as CAG and ST6 combined. They were also continuosly deployed for twenty years straight. Last but not least, they conducted raids on their own, with partner forces and other SOCOM/JSOC teams. It's only natural they have the highest tally on enemy combatants killed in the entire USSOCOM. That and the fact that their success rate is one of if not the highest in the entire US military. Let's not forget that even during Gothic Serpent they completed their mission and extracted the HVTs.

      lol. They are only the most lethal to each other. And no. They are not the most lethal DA. Which if you knew anything DA is not the term used since about 2017. But I digress, 75th is a bunch of kids that did 19days of PT. They are the kings of fratricide and failure.

    • @tigercub2468

      I've never seen any AOB, SOTF, CJSOTF, or SOJTF tally kills. 100% Rangers are legit, but plenty of dudes out there putting them down.
      I've also seen 75th guys sitting in hangers waiting for QRF call while everyone else in the streets.

    • @Gearparadummies
      @Gearparadummies 5 днів тому

      @@tigercub2468 I never said the 75th themselves tallied kills. But when GWOT started goong South, particularly in Afghanistan, all combat troops were ordered to report enemy casualties as the old Vietnam War mentality of "We're killing a lot of them=we're winning" started to be used to continue the war. Truth is, they conducted more raids than everyone else, hence they got more insurgents than everyone else.

    In practice, they put a lot of weight on red dots versus magnified optics, which tells me a passive aiming backup is a big part of their doctrine in the event active aiming is non-permissible.
    On the other hand, the Marine Corps Infantry has bet all chips on the VCOG for improved reconnaissance and observation, or suppression by accuracy when employed as by the auto gunner.
    Two perfect examples of "mission dictates."

    Rangers will soon (if not now as of 5/'24) be issued SIG/SAUER M7 battle rifles in 6.8 x 51 and M250 machine guns in the same cartridge. The M7 is a "big brother" Ar the rifle with the same manual of arms plus a non-reciprocating left side charging handle and FINALLY a short stroke gas piston system.
    The M7 has a VORTEX M157 sight SYSTEM (1 - 8 scope W/"Magic Box" of sensors and ballistic engine on top.) THE HIT PROBABILITY TO 500 METERS IS 80% FOR THE AVERAGE INFANTRYMAN!! This means less ammo need be carried on a typical mission.

    Someone please tell me why they switched to M320s as compared to M203s. Ergonomically speaking it makes no sense. There are no good holsters for M320s. Accuracy is a hard sell because its a grenade launcher. Leaf sights worked, and a side-mount GLS makes night-vision usage of the system in conjunction with a LRF basically idiot proof and MORE effective at night. Side opening breech only makes sense when you have longer 40mm rounds you want to use (such as a pike missile), but we don't even have pike missiles, and the combined effect of ISR assets would be better utilized for indirect fire from mortars than laser designation and firing from a pike. I've used both and people still tell me reasons that make no sense why the M320 is a better weapons platform.

      @@johnflank8135 I have though... and the M32... and the M240... plus the M4 and M27. Never fired a Carl G/AT4/M72/or Javelin, but got to hold them which was cool, would look through the CLU again tbh, or ride in the gun turret of a JLTV with a M41 Saber system (that I had no idea how to work lmao, but thankfully the sidemounted 240 was there.) Worst was carrying 8 60mm mortar in my main pack which was kinda heavy, in addition to the medbag that I had to carry. 3 years attached to a infantry battalion, but that isn't really a great view on my credibility, because everyone can have shitty opinions due to different experiences.
      The argument isn't that the 203 is better to shoot than the 320. The 320 is cool if all you want to do is shoot 40mm grenades, but if you want to shoot a rifle in addition to grenades, it makes sense to have it be ergonomical and easy to transition between. The 203 does that, the 320 does not.

      @Insanegorey you speak of ergonomics, but having a 203 rifle mounted negatively affects handling the weapon. The whole allure of the 320 is that it can be used standalone. (Yes there are standalone chassis for the 203, they suck) I have not once in my 6 years in Regiment ever thought that the transition from Rifle to 320 was slow or that it could ever benefit from being faster. It's stupid to encumber a rifleman, making him less effective for no good reason. To say that there are no good holsters for the 320 is not accurate. I would rather have a holstered 320 over anything underslung on my rifle, and so would anybody who has ever been a grenadier.
      But hey, you have 3 years of what seems to be USMC experience, so you must be an SME on everything, right?

      @@johnflank8135 I’m not a SME on everything, I’m just portraying what experience I had and how that feeds into what I believe. I was unimpressed with the retention systems we utilized, but it’s entirely possible that you had different equipment for retention. Most of the time the guys had a Velcro secured holster that was too tight and made transitions on the move difficult. Some guys would just buy braided bungee paracord and use that to retain it with a simple Velcro thigh strap that worked better, but that was NOT the normal at all.
      Even still, I disagree, based on what I saw and experienced. I do have another unrelated question, did RR have a good whole blood program when you were in? I’m very fascinated with the usage of the RMHB in its training of 68W’s and personally think that should be the gold standard across the service for corpsman/medics.
