I Finally Got The New Tudor Black Bay 54: Is It More Than Just A Smaller BB58?

  • Watches And Wonders 2023 provided us with some great surprises from Tudor, Rolex, Grand Seiko, Oris, and many more brands from the Richemont Group and beyond. However, the Tudor release that caught my eye the most was the all new 37mm Tudor Black Bay 54 79000. So now the BB54 is finally here and I have a lot of thoughts about it after having lived with it for the past few days. In short, I am absolutely loving it, all my worries about the size and gilt dial are now gone. In fact, I think I like this much more than my two previous BB58s
    So in this video I’m going to go over my impressions of this watch after living with it for a few days, the dimensions and what its like on the wrist. And also we’ll get into all the many nuances of the dial, the case, bezel, and bracelet. This BB54 isn't as cut and dry as “oh it's just a smaller BB58” it's more thoughtful and I like that. Finally I check the measurements to see if the TFIT bracelet can be swapped onto a Black Bay 58 (BB58) as well, unlike the Black Bay Pro (BB Pro).

    Awesome video and the most insightful review I’ve seen so far. I was able to get the watch (hard task!!) without trying it on first and I am worried about the size but your video here is making me feel more confident - hope it works for me. Thank you - I love your channel!!

    In all seriousness, congratulations, it's a beautiful watch. I own a 41mm BB and I'll never part with it. It's great that the trend is going smaller again however. Clearly a large percentage of people appreciate it. The success of the BB 58 proves it for sure.

    Had the 58 for 3 years. Had a love hate relationship with it. Sold it and got the 54 a month later… 54 wins hands down. Hardly notice a size difference on wrist but the aesthetic changes are amazing.

      Pretty much my experience word for word lol! I was really surprised at how subtle the size difference was considering how other 36-37mm divers wear and look. the great size plus the awesome bezel design in all silver makes for an incredible package. Glad to hear you're enjoying your BB54!

    That's a smart way to look at the dimensions, I have a friend with a small wrist that's quite flat and he's able to wear bigger watches! Also great looking watch, the subtlety of the dial is well done and a nice change from standard black dials. Looking forward to seeing it on other straps!

      Yeah I noticed the difference in the way watches wore on my wrist before in these shots but the effect was more intense with the BB54! They did a great job with the dial although before seeing it in person I was worried that the sunburst would be off like in the Pelagos 39 but all is well😁

    I tried the BB54 on this past weekend (on rubber strap). It and that rubber strap are extremely comfortable. It doesn't look as small as one might expect for 37mm on my 7.25" wrist, though it does not look big. I thought it was "okay" in the full size mirror, but it definitely looks a bit small in the photos I took in the mirror. My friend said it looking small has to do with my "baseball mitt" size hand. I am a very tall guy, so I imagine if you're not a giant and also have say 7 inch or smaller wrists, check this one out in person.

    I tried the 54 on on holiday , and i have 7.5 wrists. I was shocked that it looked bigger in reality. Still a tad small for me, but i really liked the watch overall. Ive got the 41 mm bb watch and it is an heavy thing , but it is impressive on my wrist .

    Not surprised you like this given the endorsement on the 38mm Seiko solar watch. I really like it although have not tried one on. I would like to see that burgundy on black combo they did for the 58 on this. I really like the jubilee but I think for a Tudor this bracelet is perfect. Since the BB Chrono this is the second Tudor I have serious considered buying.

    Not sure why everyone is bashing the size of the watch. Just because it's too small for some of you guys, doesnt mean it's not perfect for other guys with smaller wrists. All about how proportional it is to your own wrist size. Looks good on you sir!

  • @grantliu9185
    @grantliu9185 Рік тому

    Agree it’s a tremendous winner. The lugs make it wear much larger than 37. It wears like a much thinner bb58 which is only a good thing.

    I own the BB58 blue and I love it. The dimensions are absolutely perfect for my 6.75 in wrist. IMHO dive watches should be generally larger than non-bezel watches so I have no desire to trade out my 58 for the 54.

    Nice one TWI, congratulations on the new arrival. I've not tried a BB54 (yet) as I have a feeling that my wallet will hate me (yet again). From the photos and videos that I have seen it looks great. I completely agree that if possible try a watch on the wrist and don't just go my the dimensions including height, diameter and lug to lug, they may spell a riot of negativity in comments and (anti) social media but without trying it on it's just speculation. This proved true when I tried and purchased the BB Pro among others. Looking at that dial finish it looks a bit like the Pelagos 39with the dark sunray. I had asked this question on another video and was told that it's not so I'll find out eventually when I see one. Would I get one? Err... not right now as my common sense valve has opened (it's been stuck for a few years) and I already have more dive watches than I need and I don't really want to prune my collection at this time. Many thanks for sharing.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Рік тому

      Thanks as always Anthony! Yeah this is very much a try on before any judgement kind of watch, I had no idea what to expect of this one before seeing it. Same thing goes for our BB Pro for sure! Also yeah the sunburst finish is quite different on the BB54 when compared to the Pelagos 39 far less pronounced to the point that 90% of the time its just a matte black dial lol! My common sense valve is thankfully open although its quite erratic at times so hopefully I can get it fixed😂

    That watch looks amazing! I was waiting to see if Tudor updates the BB58, wasn't expecting the 54 when it was released at W&W. Doesn't look too small on your wrist. I have the Pro and I'm wondering how much smaller does it feel compared to it. Do you still have yours or did you sell it? Hopefully Tudor releases an updated BB58, just give it all the goodies of that of the 54 or the new BB 41 heritage. Great video, keep them coming. 👍

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much! I wasnt expecting the BB54 either and before I tried one on for myself, I actually wasnt too sure about the watch. But it just felt fantastic on the wrist and the design choices they made worked really well. Visually the BB54 does look smaller than the BB Pro as expected (I actually have a side by side comparison of the two in the dimensions section!) But in terms of the overall feel, the BB54 wears considerably smaller due to it being so much thinner and so much lighter. That said, to me the BB Pro also wears extremely comfortably. I havent sold mine yet, it was for sale, then it wasnt for a while, and now its back up for sale lol. I still love it tho!

    Man... its between this and the Pelagos 39 for me! I love the way the hands match the indices (homage to the Tudor Mil Subs and its a great look), and the light weight as well as how legible and damn cool it looks
    But this 54 is lovely too... tricky choice. Which would you go for?
    I would use it cycling, walking, weekend fun, as well as the office. So basically any occasion apart from maybe formal... but I don't do formal very often, if ever
    I do like smaller watches and normally love things like the OP36, vintage Omega etc... but I also rock my 5600 g shock most weekends, so the Pelagos may give me more of that hardcore tool experience

    I like the size of the 54, but for me, the silver bezel numerals and the lack of the red triangle make the design look less cohesive IMO. It’s interesting how large watches came to be associated with masculinity by many people. It’s good to know your range and collect different sizes depending on the genre. Personally I’ve discovered that I prefer my watches on bracelets to be smaller, while watches on straps look good a bit larger imo.

    For me I still choose the BB58 in Gilt. The OG 58. I have a family heirloom. It is a Rolex ref 6538 big crown. Now I will never wear the 6538 in the wild. That being said, this is the reason I got the 58 back in 2018. It is as close as you will get to vintage even more so than the 54.
    Here is the thing. For me I wanted something that wore like the 6538 and the BB58 is it. The 6538 is 37.5-38mm X 15.2mm in thickness x 47mm lug to lug and the lug width is 20mm. The crown I believe is 8mm. The BB58 is 39mm x 11.9mm in thickness x 47mm lug to lug and the lugs are also 20mm in width.
    I tried the BB54 and it is a beautiful watch but does not wear like a vintage. It wears like something more like an explorer. Modern explorer which is great but for me I want something that feels like that 6538 and that is why I got the BB58. It is a keeper for me.
    The BB54 is a great piece but it really ain’t vintage. It’s on its own and no one would be wrong for owning it but to say it’s more vintage or refined is a stretch. A 5 digit sub is more vintage feeling than the 54.
    Lastly, if you are looking to purchase a BB I would wait until 2028. Reason being is that will be an anniversary and I am going out onto a hunch here and that is they will make changes to the 58. This is purely a guess but I think they will come out with a 38mm 58 with the same bezel gnarling as the 54, with the same gnarling as the 54 on the crown keeping it at 6.5mm or even make it 7mm without the crown tube. Also, they make make the dial glossy black like the sub. Just my guess but I feel this is the route they are going to take. Tudor is slowly dipping their feet in that water and are taking calculated risks. They will also have a T-Fit clasp for the 58.

    Love the dimensions and changes they've made with this model. I have, and will keep, the BB58 black for sentimental reasons, so I will pass on this iteration of the BB54. But, what do you think Tudor does with this BB54 model? I can't imagine they will iterate the same way as the BB58? Where would you like to see it go next? If I've learned anything from Tudor, patience is key as we do know they will iterate with colors and refinements.

    It is good thatTudor is making a ladies Black Bay now. It considering I feel like a watch like the Rolex Deepsea Sea Dweller is the right size dive watch for me, the BB54 is far too small for my wrist. Nice watch, just not for me. I hope that companies like Tudor, Omega and Rolex don’t discontinue making 42mm and above watches as men as a trend are getting bigger as are their wrists, so smaller watches that may well be a fashionable trend right now certainly don’t suit everyone…

      Not sure characterizing this as a lady's watch quite works when the submariner started at 37mm! I do agree that there needs to be options for all wrists sizes out there including larger wrists and smaller wrists alike bc the more people can buy watches theyre comfortable with, the better for the hobby overall!

    I have this love/hate relationship with the Black Bay line.. I want one but then I remember how basic and blah it is. No character at all, and a very common go to watch in the community. I was even considering the BB 58 GMT Rootbeer, as it has more style. But not these standard BBs. I'd rather get a Superocean, Zulu Time, Aquatimer, Aquis or even an Omega Seamaster 300m or the 300 Master heretiege model. Save up a bit more and go Glashutte Original Seaq. I didn't mention Seiko, because I have a bunch of them. Tudor hasn't won me over yet.

      I had a rocky relationship with my BB58 blue it was a solid that that I respected bc it didnt have the extra spice that i like in watches. This one onthe other hand with the 37mm size and gilt dial, neither of which feature prominently in my collection, seems to have that missing x factor.
      I agree with all your choices tho theyre all really fantastic watches that i want in my collection, or in the SMP300's case, back in my collection. And like you I have too many seikos lol!
