I was making cakes for14 years with my own bakery where we did bespoke cakes and cupcake kids parties as well as working as a barrister . We scaled back 5 years ago then closed when covid arrived. Sometimes you just have to change priorities as life goes on. Totally always support everything you do whatever it is. I’ve made so many friends through the brigade and it’s been amazing. Always so thankful for you creating it x❤️❤️❤️ my new business which is my own designed and clothing brand is helping those that struggle. We started a homeless and those struggling to manage charity 7 years ago. Now 50% of all we make through our clothing go into food parcels, topping up electric/gas meters etc for those in our county. Have to give back xxx

Hey Tracey! I'm a cake maker as well! From another part of the globe. I think we all can share your sentiments. Global inflation, COVID. Etc has affected us all. But I'm glad I was able to pick myself up during these hard times and push through not giving up on my passion for doing cakes, so yea things are looking a bit brighter after 2 years. Just wanna say whatever changes that u need to make , you do what's right! Just joined the bridgadier ( cherry tier ) can't wait to meet the others on the Facebook forum as well. Thank you for being an inspiration all these years. 🍒🍒🍒🍒

Tracey! I've been absent from youtube for a year and just mustered up the courage to crack an eye at my analytics last week to see the damage not posting has done lol. The fact that you post every week is honestly insane, I have never managed to be that consistent so you should definitely be proud of yourself for being able to keep it up for 5 years. You are so talented and your work ethic is so admirable, but I also completely understand the need to scale it back before you burn yourself out.

I had my cake business since 2011 and now I have chucked it all in and only do cakes for family. I now work fulltime, I have also come off instagram and Facebook as it was making me too depresses at others doing well aswell as costing me more money, as I was buying products to better my business and it just wasn't working for me. I feel so much better for giving it all up now.

I have been doing cakes for friends and family for years and been getting the ears nagged off me to start business. I already have a part time job, so have decided to get things in place this year to start business to boost income. I have designed my logo now worked on pricing, booked health and hygiene course feeling nervous and thinking is this really the best time. But it is either that or go full time into a job I don't love. My husband wants me to do cakes and is 100% supportive. I have always been creative, loved making things painting DIY.. I will give anything a go and it is time I put my talents to good use! I have recently joined as a tea cup and enjoying being part of your brigadier community. You have gave me so much inspiration. I do enjoy your tutorials so much but I love your vlogs probably more.. seeing behind the scenes, seeing that even the most talented of us have day of doubt almost gives you an I can do it attitude if you follow what I mean.

Been making cakes for 12 years and this year I have felt exactly like you 😪 I decided to bite the bullet and pack up my workshop after much deliberation. I was missing out on family time for not much money which made me resent them even more. I enrolled on a nail course in March so I had a distraction, and can honestly say I haven't missed cakes at all. I have felt much happier. It makes me so sad to see cake makers I have followed for years so deflated by the industry. You have to do what is best for you and your family, and ultimately what makes you happy xxx

PS I’m a very very part time cake maker and recently I decided I’m happy just doing cakes for family and friends. I work part time as a nurse, I’m nearly 59 and I realised from watching you , and others on social media working all the hours to be successful that I just couldn’t divide myself between work , my extending family (I now have grandchildren) and a business so I’ll stay as I am.

    Morning!!!
Ill start by saying that j love everything you make and create. You explain everything so well and the work you put in def shows. I also love being a brigadier… BUUUTTTTT…I do mot want to be responsible for even the slightest bit of your unhappiness. If ypu need a break, you take it. If you need a shift in business or upload schedules, you do it. Us people pleasers really do so much in detriment to ourselves in so many ways. I think covid really made a lot of people realize what matters and how exhausting our lives feel like at full-speed. Everything is full-speed or you feel bad. If anyone loves you, its all of us and i hope i speak for all that we care more about you, your mental health, physical health, and family more than seeing a tutorial or video.
Another thing, im so glad that people are starting to be absolutely transparent on how social media is not as good as everyone thinks.
I wish you nothing but the best and ill be here no matter when or if you upload again! ❤️❤️❤️

I decorated cakes for 10 years and at the beginning of this year I quit. I had great guilt about what I would need to charge due to the inflation. I felt like I couldn’t look myself in the mirror and say I was doing what was right or fair for my customers or myself. Some of my customers were not happy with my decision but I did what I felt was right. Do I miss it? Yep Will I make cakes again? Maybe Ultimately, you need to do what’s right for you. I've been making cakes for 15 years and recently decided to stop. It was a wonderful creative outlet for a long time but it got tiring in the last few years. I'm also an older student (41 this year) and completed my Master's degree this past May. I've found my interests have changed and I enjoy research and education more. I'm developing workshops based on my research and will be presenting my research at a conference later this year. I'm also applying to PhD programs. I was in somewhat of the same boat. I work full time at a large corporation and was posting 2 videos a week for over 3 years. It became to much and stopped for 7 months, now I just upload when I want to. But during that 7 months my channel was longer monetized as my watch times went way down. The goal for my channel was to make this my fun Disney money. I have a great job so the money wasn't huge to me, but I totally understand how much time goes it making a video. I love watching your vlogs and tutorials, they give me so much help, I will be sad 😔 if you stop them altogether, but totally understand why you have to slow down, I'm getting better as a hobby baker and it's thanks to you why I am,
I hope one day, I can quit my job as I work and do cakes too.

As a long time brigadier I love you as always! Loved the no drama group! Lmbo we are definitely not that … so much support and love ! I’m a lifer for sure! I have been doing my cake business full time for 5 years! I was divorced 6 months ago and was really hoping to keep it going and completely support myself! But the cost of living crisis is also in America ! My supplies have almost doubled in some cases and customers want to pay less and less! I really felt you when you were saying I feel bad pushing my trade when people are suffering like I am!,,? But being a people pleaser or doormat! I have given in to people customers friends and then found myself struggling a lot harder then they are! 🥺 I have applied for full time jobs, I honestly don’t know if I want to continue, I KNOW it won’t be the same as it is right now, my prices are way to low and I can’t keep going the same way! Love you Tracey! Will support anyway I can 🥰

Hello from Montréal! ☺️ I was really touched by your vlog. I am just a beginner in cake making and am learning a lot from watching you! I look forward to all your videos, tutorials, vlogs, etc. I completely understand what you’re going through. I have a full time job which pays very well, so cake making isn’t a major earning issue for me. I bake only for friends, family, coworkers and the odd customer who happened to see my FB page. Many people ask me why I don’t do this for a living. How can I do this for a living when I charge on average 70 $CAD per cake?! I happened to recently increase my prices and customers weren’t too happy about it 🫤 So believe me, I completely understand your choice. Time is money. Have no regrets in the decisions you make and think about yourself and your family, that’s what truly matters. Take cake Tracey! Love yeah ❤️

I too have been a chocolatier for over 35 years and a cake decorator for over 15 years. I retired 18 months ago from a job in the construction industry. Though I love what I do in creating, it is to the point where it's not cost effective anymore to keep going. I basically do this part time as a home bakery, but I have found a love of baking bread the last 2 years and love it. I don't advertise so I do get a lot of referrals, but you get people who want custom cakes at box store prices and don't just get what all is involved. I've literally spent hours researching and quoting only to get ghosted by people. How would they feel if their work ghosted them and or said sorry, we found someone cheaper to do your job when you're trying to support your family? But I think all the decorators are feeling the same thing, we are burnt out, doing cakes just to keep some income flowing (but people don't realize it is still hitting your pocket because a lot of decorators don't charge enough, they undercut a lot of the seasoned people, but they will get burned out in time.) But even the larger channels with big names are charging like $30.00 a month for their school tutorials, but then decided to switch and do more pastries or cookies, or bring on big name pastry chefs. That isn't what was originally signed up for. We signed up for custom cakes, how to do structures, unique stuff no one else is doing etc, not to see how to make bread, cookies, that we can watch for free on TV or other channels. So times are changing to where I may have to cut some of the online schools because they are not living up to what they originally started out to do and for that kind of money a month to switch to common things we can learn on our own isn't worth the investment anymore. But it has been wonderful watching you do your cakes, your techniques, watching your family grow up, your sense of humor, has been wonderful. But you have to take care of yourself and do what's best for you. Your videos will still be here, and if we want to join your Brigade, we can head on over and see you there. Thanks again for the laughter and joy you always bring. I've never seen a family who laughs so much with each other, it is so nice to see. Big hugs and good luck to everything you do in the future!

good on ya Tracey !! bout time. I still cant believe how generous you have been sharing your talent for free all these years. Once you get into making paid tutuorials, which is a large amount of work and time, but once done you should get a steady income from these by selling in your shop. I am not affected too much by the spiralling cost as retired I do cakes for a little extra income, but that is kinda drying up for said reasons. I love doing the big detailed character cakes very much in your style but people dont want to pay for the effort anymore and although I love doing these, it does get hard to think I am working for $5 per hour ! so my big change is going to be moving to the very pretty but generic, it seems to me, wedding cakes. People seem not to be bothered about paying for these in their wedding budget and is a lot less work...glitter, stencils and a few sugar flowers etc .crazy. I will continue making my characters and hopefully find a niche somewhere to do demos/classes, which I love doing and a few competitions which are always fun
. Good luck Tracey, well done and thank you, thank you , thank you. xx

While you don't owe any of us anything, I know I personally appreciate you explaining the WHY! I think so many things are a struggle right now and a lot of people are having to learn how to make some changes. I think we all expected it to go back to normal after covid, but things are...weird. Anyway, caking is actually my side business, and lately I have been so "meh" about it. Nothing really excites me and I find myself trying to convince people to let me take shortcuts. thankfully, I am getting a forced break this next month due to a 30 day work trip (ugh!) and I am hoping that will help. If not, I might just take the rest of the year off from cakes! Anyway, long story long, I love your tutorials and they have been a massive help to me over the years, but I love your vlogs even more! I am excited to keep seeing those and fully support (like it matters) you taking a step back. Definitely need to rearrange my budget to fit a Brigadiers subscription so I don't miss out!!

Hey Tracey, I have watched every vlog and tutorial and I love them all!!! I understand totally why you need to slow down. I live in Israel where the cost of living is also sky high and the salaries are really low! I am a nurse and a hobby cake decorator, but am out of work right now. I got my nursing license in America and the bureaucracy involved in trying to get my license switched over is insane! But I am still cracking on! Being a cake decorator here is just not worth it. Wedding cakes are not as big here and it definitely would not be monetarily worth it. Anyways, I wish you lots of luck and I am definitely looking into becoming a brigadier. I’m in Canada and it’s very similar here with the cost of living sky rocketing. I’ve had to pack up my business and I have so many mixed feelings about it. I love being at home with my children and working part time for a guaranteed wage but I look at all my cake stuff boxed up and see just waste..waisted potential, wasted money on something that ultimately couldn’t self sustain as the economy got bad. It’s just sad but I appreciate your honesty and the way you vocalized a lot of feelings in the industry right now.

Hi Tracey, I am a cake maker too, I have a small business and was doing really well until covid hit. Although things have picked up and I have cakes going out every week, I also seemed to have gotten more stress and anxiety since covid, I find myself getting more worked up and stressed when making larger cakes and not FEELING it anymore. My husband also has a few health problems and needs my help a lot more, so I have cut my orders down to two a week, ( well supposed to but like you I'm too soft and say yes when I really don't want to). During lockdown, I decided to do something new and started watercolour painting and teaching myself to draw which I love, but my new thing is making dolls and teddys with clothes, I am loving it, doesn't make me any money but my mental health is so much better and I have time for my family and friends. You have given your time to many people, taught them for free and now you need to think about yourself, so whatever you do with your free time make sure you love it and give your lovely family more of you xxx

I love and fully support "ruthlessly editing your life", but making tough choices is still so heartbreaking. I loved the cake business but got out in 2019 due to burnout and locked off all my business social media. This year I decided that I may be ready to get back in the game, but I just came back to a graveyard of the dead pages of all my favourite sprinkle makers and fellow bakers who have closed their businesses.
It was so sad and made me question my choice. As you said, the people who you thought were thriving and who you strived to be like are just gone. So now I'm in a weird space. We're experiencing the same problems from the UK all the way to the Caribbean where I am, and it really sucks when you have to decide if what you love should just stay a hobby.
I am very happy for you for coming to this decision and realising how you can enrich your life and improve your mental health. Don't worry about pleasing people, because at the end of the day you and your family will always be more important than a stranger's validation. I wish you all the best as you continue to edit your life to realise more happiness.

Hi Tracey! I think your idea to focus more on yourself and family is fabulous. You should not in no way feel bad or guilty for doing so. Cost of living is rising all over the world. Here is the USA parents are finding their adult children moving back in. A $100 (86.33 pound) doesn't buy enough food for 3 days. Many ppl are quitting jobs and collecting state aid cause they cannot afford the gas to get to work. It's quite scary now actually. I only make cakes for my family. My dream was to be a successful baker/ cake maker, but due to health issues that dream has crumbled. I want to be honest with you about something. I think being a brigadier is awesome (use to be a cherry), but I think by you shipping out boxes to all the cherries is defeating the purpose of supporting you for your teaching. It's so sweet of you to want to give back to your bridgadiers, but seriously, think about the money you spend just filling the boxes, nevermind shipping costs. The bridgaders and your true fans aren't going anywhere, we all love you dearly.
