One thing that must not be overlooked, Reid and Brooker were in their early 20s when they wrote this. The members of Yes were in their 20s when they were composing their myriad of excellence and on and on with artists from this era. Back then the bar was so high compared to now where the bar is so very low.
Guitar player is Geoff Whitehorn. He has played with all sorts of people but said he had always coveted the Procol Harum gig and when he was offered it he was overjoyed. He was with them for over 30 years and was still there at the very end. An absolutely tremendous player.
Multiple cameras and recording equipment and great editing to capture this epic, once in a life time performance. We all are the benefactors and give our Thanks.
Absolutely overwhelming version of "Salty dog"! Gary Brookers voice sounded fantastic, also the band and the orchestra. And " an old english dream " was a very good song too. No one sings like Gary Brooker. R.I.P.! 😢
Whoop whoop. I do love this tune, ever since it was laid down on vinyl many moons, how many junes ago😊. But this here is pure genius. Great reaction and interpetation🤘❤️
Salty Dog is my alltime favorite Procol Harum song. The voice is incredible in this he sings it better than when first recorded this over 50 years ago just amazing. Who writes about a victorian age ship captain and crew nobody but Procol just awsome.✌🎹🎵🎸🔥
First of all, pronunciation: _PRO_ as in _PROton_ , _col_ is unaccented with a "schwa" vowel sound rhyming roughly with _cull._ _HAR_ pronounced like the _HAIR_ on your head, _rum_ unaccented, the syllable pronounced like the distilled Caribbean liquor, with a short _U_ sound rhyming with _bum._ 1:30 That head-shake at the first sound of Brooker's voice speaks volumes. Possibly the greatest voice in Rock and Roll. "A Salty Dog" has this ghost story vibe to it, spooky. I think of Dead Man's Bay near Steinhatchee, Florida.. I love the chord progression in both songs, both giving emotional emphasis to the stories related by the lyrics. May I suggest "The Wreck of the Hesperus" for your consideration? And "Mabel".
My very favorite Procul Harum tune! The writer said it was about pirates taking a ship at the end of his pirating, and running the stolen ship aground on a tropical desert isle to live out their lives. Hope this is true coz it's a great story. Thanks for sharing your reaction 💖
I think that their songs could all work crowded bars with one singer/piano player. It's a place they could fit. And that reminds me of Tow Waits who really takes bar singing to an edge. Scroobiaba doobiaba, doobiaba day!
Okay got it, automatically know how to say something exactly the way Jerry likes it even if it’s my first time seeing this band and no one knows who Jerry is. Will do, thanks for the tip.
We lost a real treasure with his passing. He just got better with time and that gorgeous whiskey & tobacco patina to his voice.
What a fabulous singer, he just got better with age! Rock ‘em in heaven Gary!

It is ProcOl Harum. A great band.
When you mix Gary Brooker's voice with Classic Rock tunes done with a full orchestra and choir you get Classic Class.
Awesome. A lost treasure!!
He makes a Fender Strat sound like a Seagull.... Cool
I grew up with Procul Harum in the late 60s. This was my favorite song of theirs. Such a 19th century vibe, seafaring, whaling....love it.
Massive KUDOS to the Drummer
I saw them perform 'Salty Dog' many times as a 5 piece band. It was always epic.

Gave me chills listening to this.
Thank you for your kind words. Salty Dog always brings tears down this 70 year old Granny’s face!
i love music that tells a story.

A classic love this song and what a voice ! Gary sang a song for the Allan Parsons Project called Limelight that is very special !
The guitarist was imitating the sound of sea gulls that was on the record.
Whales.
Wonderful production
