Matthew Good video, but next time suck the old fluid out of the reservoir before you attempt to drain the system. Refill the reservoir with clean AT fluid and drain the system. This way the pump uses the clean fluid to push out the old stuff. Keep refilling the reservoir until the fluid runs clean (red). Now shut off the car, replace the drain bolt and refill the system to the max level. Now start the car and turn the steering from left lock to right lock multiple times to bleed to air out of the system.
my only suggestion would be to definitely replace the reservoir when doing this service. there is a non-cleanable filter on the bottom that gets gunked up after 30+ years so it's detrimental to the system. New reservoir is $25-$35 so its very affordable. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Very informative!
Please listen to that recommendation. I had my car fall due to a jack falling. Luckily i literally just moved my legs from under the car just before it fell. From then on i ALWAYS use jack stands.
I'm having a similar problem right now with my 1991 e30 318i. The power steering fluid is slowly leaking and now it makes the whirring sound. Not as loud as yours ... yet. I will probably just replace the pump.
Might have been easier to remove the return hose from the reservoir and use it to dump into a waste container. Start vehicle and add fluid as it pumps. Stop when things look good. Also as others stated, replace the reservoir too because of the screen.
And I thought my e30's ps fluid was bad, my goodness. I'll probably have to do a couple more drains to get it to be better. It's still a brownish color. Anyways, question, will the brand of transmission fluid matter in anyway?? I'm guessing no??
Off the top of my head as long as its a Dexron II ATF fluid or newer it should be compatible. I went ahead and just picked up the cheapest ATF fluid at my local parts store. A site I use for checking my fluids/ types to use this guy: www.amsoil.com/AmsoilGarage/internal/vehiclelookuppage.aspx?url2=1986+BMW+325e+7 you can go ahead and enter the car year and make model and it'll pull up the fluids and type you need. Hope this helps!
I don't remember which hex size it is sorry, but no leaking issues afterwards. You could also just remove the power steering hoses to drain the fluid as well.

Thanks! I'll probably end up doing it again and give your steps all a go!

Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work. I'd recommend getting some jack stands, don't rely on the jack alone to keep it propped up.
Thanks! And yeah I got some new jack stands that I will be using from now on :P

Nice work. I'd change those front tires as well 🙂.
Great thanks! now I know how to do it with my e30 318i cabriolet, 1991:-) Mikkel /Denmark

I read somewhere the bearings might lubrication. Most likely a new pump will solve the issue.
Safety first use Jack stands bro!!!

thanx fer sharing, you still got the car?
Sold a couple years ago
I rebuilt my pump and the drain plug stripped. Finding another plug to replace the drain plug is a pain in the butt.

Also your dog is soo cute ;0;

Matthew Wong great. I'm good to go then. Thank you(:
What size hex wrench did u use for the drain bolt and have u had any leaking issues since the drain?
