CLIMBING 'THE ELEPHANT' IN TEMAGAMI | 2021 Canoe Camping Trip in the North | Part 2

  • Jessica and I check out the world's largest stand of old growth red pine, which surrounds Temagami's Wolf Lake. This area is designated a "forest reserve", which protects it from logging, but not from mining activity. Despite continued promises from the Ontario Government to one day include this area in the Chiniguchi Waterway Provincial Park (which would provide it with full protection), the reserve remains in a holding pattern due to the renewal of mining leases. Without full protection, mineral exploration (and the great swath of forest clearing that come with it) continues around the lake. After checking out the large pines and mining activity around Wolf Lake, we make our way up to Chiniguchi where we climb up "The Elephant" and check out some alligator remains. Enjoy!

    Thanks for showing this footage. I hike/forage behind Temagami (far down Red Squirrel Road) and it breaks my heart to see how the government/forestry workers don't give an eff about the pristine forest. I'm an avid believer in being a good steward of the forest and making sure to pick up as much/all of the trash I can when I'm back there. I've been hiking back there for over 15 years now, and it's getting worse every year. I'm in my early 40s, and my folks used to take us (the whole family) to swim on the shores of Ferguson Bay (the Sandy Inlet) back in the mid 80's. Great video, guys

      I’m glad you’ve been able to enjoy that area for such a long time! Fingers crossed that the wilderness remains in tact enough for people to enjoy it for many years to come. We think it’s important to showcase the reality, as nothing will change if nobody is aware of what’s going on. Enjoy your summer!

    I immediately liked your style and subbed. I never see anyone else just dip into a lake or river for their morning water boil for food and coffee. Sure I use a filter for drinking water but if I'm boiling it there's no need. I immediately knew you were legit and that I'd enjoy your videos. I absolutely despise people who leave food, cigarette butts or cans in fire pits, it really pisses me off. Keep up being awesome!

    I was about to say Yum, Yum, Yum, then the silica pack showed up. Nice video guy's, the view was worth the hike.

      Dumb silica pack... never had to throw out a meal before. Thanks for watching!

    Water sounds a touch chilly lol. Those darn silica packs. Good call throwing it out cause I'm sure much stomach discomfort would have followed. Thanks for bringing us along.

      Thanks for watching! Only that lake was extremely cold like that which was weird. We won’t forget to take them out again! That was a huge letdown on the trip

    I couldn't help crack up at Jessica poking fun at you with, "Life of a UA-camr." 😆 I ate silica once, when a friend gave me her meal that she couldn't finish. She added the silica thinking it was some spice. I was wondering why there were hard crunchy bits in her rehydrated meal. Well, that was many years ago, and I'm still alive! 😬

      Common theme on our trips! Me always working to get shots. Sounds tasty! We later found out it says ‘do not eat’ on the packet so people don’t choke on it, not because it’s poison. But not worth the risk and I’m glad we did what we did.

    Great video Matt and Jessica. It was nice seeing a cameo from Murph! That Elephant look out was great. It looked like quite the hike to get here. Thanks for sharing the video.

      Thanks for watching, Dave! That song is always on our minds when that meal is being made. Staying on trail on the Elephant was the hardest part as it was hard to find in parts. It’s something I would do again though!

    Good day Matt! I was curious about your pot warmer lol. Is it reflectix and did you buy it or make it? From the way it fits I'm assuming it's custom. Nice job on the videos as well. My wife and I watch them over and over.

    • @MattHaughn
      @MattHaughn  Рік тому

      Hi Mason! Yes the pot warmer is a DIY Reflectix project. Very affordable and makes a big different in the backcountry, both for using less fuel and for keeping meals hot. Thanks for watching, glad your enjoying the channel 😄

    Always informative, quality trip videos - thanks for sharing. PS Try Costco canned chicken (packed in water) for dehydrating - the best !!!

    This is the best video on this amazing place! You have very quickly become our most favorite canoe tripping channel on UA-cam now. I love your high-speed video technique, where you add motion blur to it! I have not seen this done before, what a brilliant idea! Did you use something like RE:Vision Effects' ReelSmart Motion Blur to achieve this?

    • @MattHaughn
      @MattHaughn  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for watching our videos! I use a built in effect on my editing software to achieve the look. I can adjust how blurry it is and how thick the blur is. It makes time lapses so much more pleasing to look at

    Nice job on your video, what is it with people leaving trash on sites and in fire pits! Man they piss me off! The worst thing though, just like on Vancouver Island, so little old growth is left yet our damn greedy governments wont protect what little is left! Just burns my insides! Sorry for the rant, I did enjoy your video! Looking forward to the rest!

      Thanks! They leave it there because that’s where things disappear. Unless they travel with someone who can tell them any different, they won’t know or change. Your rant is justified! I feel the same way. Have a good one!

    Great video guys! I'm actually leaving tomorrow morning for the exact same route, including the Donald lake addition. Any advice or knowledge you feel I should know about the route?
    Also, what kind of radio was that you had the weather on?
    Thanks! Keep it up!

    • @MattHaughn
      @MattHaughn  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching Dan. You’ll have an awesome time! When you get to the swampy part on the 895m into Laura Lake, keep left as there are more sticks and ground support in the mud. Everything else is pretty easy going. It’s a very scenic route. We wanted to stay an extra day on Evelyn Lake but couldn’t. Donald Lake is really nice but if you have time, consider the southern sites over the northern sites. You might be pleasantly surprised.
      The radio is a Sangean DT-800. Not the best in signal strength but gets the job done.

      Good to know about that Laura lake portage, it's the only one I was worried about. You think this loop is possible to do in 7 days?

    I was in Killarney 3 weeks ago, someone defecated 2 feet from the water with a bunch of toilet paper right beside. I felt sick, how could anyone do something like that. People should have to write a test to use the backcountry.

    • @MattHaughn
      @MattHaughn  2 роки тому

      That’s disgusting! Without any education, most aren’t aware of their actions and how they effect others. A test would be great!

    Y'all ever bring some hooks, fishing line and a knife capable of filleting a fish as a possible emergency meal or means of survival should misfortune strike?

    • @MattHaughn
      @MattHaughn  Рік тому

      Hey Pete! We always pack some extra food with us in case of emergency and our trips aren’t generally long enough or remote enough that we wouldn’t be able to get out (or someone come in to get us) within a few days. If we plan some longer and/or more remote trips in the future, it would definitely be something to consider. Thanks for watching! 😁
