SOLO Backcountry Camping in the RAIN | ASMR No Talking | Autumn | Fall Colours
Solo camping, to me, is all about the sights and sounds. Thoughts, feelings and senses change while camping alone. The quiet sounds get loud, the animals get closer and the feeling of being small gets bigger.
Join me on this four day solo in the fresh autumn air where it rained, was sunny and most importantly, was a perfect fall soundtrack. I stayed silent on this trip because, well, it was necessary. It's natures turn to talk and boy was it a good story.
Sit back, relax and turn up the volume. Hear what nature has to say.

First Time Backpacking - 50km in 3 Days - Juan de Fuca Trail
Переглядів 3 тис.6 місяців тому
After attending a friend's wedding on Vancouver Island, Jessica and I decided to take our first ever backpacking trip on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. Filled with lush rainforest, giant trees and rocky shorelines, the trail gave us some of the most spectacular scenery we've ever experienced in the backcountry. The 47km trail is typically completed in 3-5 days, but we were strapped for time and...

Old bumpy roads end at a 4km (2.5mi) uphill portage that leads to lonely Wilkins Lake in the wilderness of Ontario, Canada. Brother Tom, myself and Smokey head to a lake we've been to before. We previously made a single night stop on our way to Vireo Lake, but at the time we didn't have the opportunity to properly check out it's beauty. This time around, staying two nights, we revisit the past ...

    Thanks for showing this footage. I hike/forage behind Temagami (far down Red Squirrel Road) and it breaks my heart to see how the government/forestry workers don't give an eff about the pristine forest. I'm an avid believer in being a good steward of the forest and making sure to pick up as much/all of the trash I can when I'm back there. I've been hiking back there for over 15 years now, and it's getting worse every year. I'm in my early 40s, and my folks used to take us (the whole family) to swim on the shores of Ferguson Bay (the Sandy Inlet) back in the mid 80's. Great video, guys

      Trip good but challenging, fishing not so good. Found a way around the Raja to Muskrat and the high part of Raja to Molle portage on the way back out. Just follow the Muskrat creek down stream around the hill to where that pile of logs was you showed when you came in on your vlog. High water route only, easy beaver dam slide overs saved my back. Paddled all the way to the end of Boot and walked the portage to the edge of the park. Worth it, nice scenery.

BTW - my son and I are doing that Cedar Loop in mid-May :) If you get a chance, head to Wabakimi, you'll not regret paddling there. Bruce from Wab Outfitters does a great job. I tried this a few years ago. I double-carry, and at the time was using a canvas canoe. I always carry the pack first so I can scout out a portage. On this one, I fell with the pack not too far from where you did on Mole-Raja, just a little bit before that dip down next to the creek. I was very muddy, and I'd had to go around a LOT of blowdowns at that point. Had the same trouble you did scrambling back up from the creek, that was a remarkably steep little scramble. BUT - it was shortly after that scramble that I completely lost the trail. Then I thought how awful it would be to get the canoe even that far, and after several minutes of not being able to get a bearing on the trail, gave up on it. I've been debating taking another shot at it, but I'm wondering - when you took your tumble on that portage, how far in do you think you were? When I tried it I was thinking that dip-down-scramble-up point was maybe 400-450 meters from Raja, meaning just a little past the halfway point. Thanks very much for posting by the way. There are very, very few trip reports on this route.

    Very nice. I have done the West Coast Trail, which is just north of the piece you did. It is quite similar in terms of terrain etc. I guess you could combine them for about 10 days of hiking. But WCT has the Parks Canada fees, some tricky (paid) lake crossings and logistics to/from Port Renfrew and Bamfield. IMHO, if you are a canoe tripper at heart, hiking just feels like ... an endless portage. Sure, it is one without a canoe, but still. There is something about the balance of paddle and portage that is magical. There is a balance there, where you are not doing the same thing every day, all day. The one gives a break from the other, and vice-versa. The other thing about doing these trails when you are used to Central Ontario tripping is the stress of making sure you have fresh water available to you. It's quite a difference going from paddling in an effectively unlimited supply of the stuff to making sure you have to fill up at the creeks (and make safe for drinking) often enough that you don't run out before you next chance to get some.

    • @MattHaughn
      @MattHaughn 5 місяців тому

      We actually looked into the West Coast Trail, but didn’t have enough time for it on this trip. Maybe next time! Thankfully, water wasn’t a big issue for us. There were fresh water creeks all over the place and we only carried up to 1L each at time. Canoe tripping will always hold a large part of our hearts, but we really enjoyed the hiking experience and would love to explore that more. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!

      @@MattHaughn With respect to water, it sounds like WCT is a bit tougher than Juan de Fuca. The gaps between the creeks can be quite a bit farther apart, and there are also places where you have some options on the trail (whether to stay up high on top of the cliff, or descend down to the beach) where the creek is not readily available in all cases.

    Wow! What an amazing trail hike. The views were spectacular. It looked like a great time you booth had. I would love to do that trail sometime but I'm on the opposite side of the country here in Newfoundland. We do have the East Coast Trail which in some areas looked like the trail you just hiked. Nice to see a new video from you both.......Take care, Bluefin.

      Lots of people at the beaches / trailheads for sure. We rarely saw anyone on the trail itself though! Pros and cons.

      @@MattHaughn I've been planning for this hike but it seems a bit lame that you have to deal with all these extra people that just walk in from the road.

    Hello Jessica and Matt, I am part way through Day 2 of the video. This adventure gives your paddling muscles a rest whilst your back and legs are probably thinking that you two must be on a very long portage! Cheers, Paul from south east Australia 🇦🇺

    I'm planning a trip to the lookout and was also hoping for footage on the Scorch Lake campsites. Check and check!...and as I bonus I picked with a few editing tips as well. Good stuff!

    Love people that preach about bush practices and then cut and burn live wet birch.

    • @MattHaughn
      @MattHaughn 10 місяців тому

      No live trees were cut down. The birch chunks came from a log that was already on the ground when we arrived at the campsite (see Part 2 of the series at 27:30). Definitely not bone dry on the inside and a hatchet would have been helpful, but better than the damp rotting core of most downed birch trees. Hope that clears things up! Thanks for watching 😄

    Great job Matt! That 'new' portage to Muskrat seems longer and possibly rougher than the old trail. It's almost as if parks had a mapping/GIS error and then just cut a new trail to reflect what they have internally vs brushing the older trail. It was flat and appears shorter. Glad staff got out there though!

      Thanks Brad! You summed up my thoughts exactly. Definitely not an efficient route! Wish I would have had your GPS track to follow. Very nice to see staff getting into the lesser traveled routes however.
