It takes a lot of effort, education and unfortunately pain, to change direction, once authoritarianism gets a hold in governments. And right wing authoritarians have a small majority now. The right wing authoritarian personalities who vote these people in, are really, really hard to change. These however, are only 27% of eligible votes for Drumpf. They will still be there after Drumpf is gone. The next "Strongman" will get their votes anyway. The folks we should be interviewing and listening to, are the majority 89 million who did not vote.

Why don't Democrats ever run on just unwinding the tax cuts? I don't mean ending them for the upcoming year, but going through the pockets of billionaires and making them disgorge the trillions in tax cuts they have benefitted from over the past 8 or 12 years? All in one go! That would break a regular working person, but billionaires just have it salted away in investment portfolios. Make it even more popular by handing it out, as cash, to working people. One big windfall.
Love that this representative called the filibuster, "douchey" because it so fucking is. Like I love that the reason I am in the only industrialized country without national health care because of a procedure put in to protect slavery.

Any chance this channel responds to comments? I would love a video of Tim Miller explaining why he is or was republican, and what changed. I feel like that could explain to conservatives as a video itself.
It was a shell game for individuals. Example for Family of 4: OLD LAW: Married filing Joint $13,000 Standard Deduction. 4 Personal Exemptions of $5,300 ea = $21,200. Total Not Taxed NEW LAW: Standard Deduction increased to $29,200 for Married filing Joint, but Personal Exemptions of $5,300 ea eliminated. Allowed Child Tax Credit of $2,000 x 2 children = $4,000 Total Not Taxed The good news is that if it goes back to where it was, no big deal for some. Business tax is quite another matter.
In most situations including the one we're in here and now they don't. Laffer, the economist name checked in that discussion made a name for himself by pointing out that there exists a rate of taxation at which economic activity slows down (or hides in a black market) so much that you get less tax revenue than you would at a slightly lower tax rate. Now, while that tipping point on the curve exists, there are a lot of confounding factors that mean you can't find it universally and precisely. Ever since, conservative politicians have used a willful misinterpretation of this as a fig leaf to justify every prospective tax rate cut as not actually reducing tax revenue. And they continue to do it no matter how many times the results or the data from other places and times demonstrate we are clearly and objectively well below that critical point.
I love people acting like MAGA won't just abolish the filibuster as soon as it's inconvenient. Why would that be the historic norm that would be a step too far?
According to my sources, the average price of a dozen eggs in Kansas is $4.41. You're getting ripped off or maybe buying organic brown eggs at Whole Foods.
The Republican Politicians care about the billionaires and millionaires. The Republican do not care about how. Hard the poor people have to struggle financially.
Instead of giving more to the ultra wealthy in tax cuts, support home owners in CA & FA by subsidising home insurance. Why isn't Trump thinking about them?
Is doge going to cut programs that benefit musk and vivek? Maybe we don't need a space program if people can't afford to eat or pay for health care? musk says there is going to be short term pain to achieve long term prosperity! But not program that benefits him!! You might think he has enough money but if you listen he wants more and also he wants to WIN whatever it takes!
Okay, Tim and Brendan, sometime between 1978 and 1980, the Maryland Terps basketball team blew Notre Dame off the court by one foul shot in the final second. Eat your hearts out.
I'm not knocking podcasts, this isn't the only one I watch but I am concerned that everybody will lock ourselves into our own echo chambers. I would like to hear a thoughtful discussion on how podcasts evolve responsibly. Heather Cox Richardson certainly supports professional journalism & the researchers behind them & the accountability plus she is excited that there is more interest in local media & I agree with her 100%. How do we avoid a Joe Rogan for every niche & interest? How will Podcasters develop professional networks we don't see? How will Podcasters resist their own biases? It used to require zero discipline to read both sides of a story & we have lost that to some degree & it's something I truly believe we have to diligently guard against losing altogether. We don't need to hear debates but perhaps civil round tables now & then Tim, if you read this & are still reading I have an example on the importance of understanding different points of view. I'm straight but 35 years ago I had 5 gay roommates & me. So I don't think I was ever close minded nevertheless 25 years ago as it became an issue, I was initially opposed to gay marriage because I thought it was about money not love. I read an article that made me realize some laws are cruel & even if unintentional, laws & customs should never be cruel. So I quickly changed my position. Sometimes our opinions are based on ignorance & just hearing an opposing view usually helps a lot. It doesn't need to change minds, it can simply be "oh, I get it. Okay" and that reduces the antagonism if not eliminates it & that alone quells some extremism. Anyway I don't want to slide into my own echo chamber & sometimes it worries me. Maybe it's something for podcasters to think about
49:02 the debt can be held constant or even lowered and the Fed can run overdraft protection. It is not necessary to issue debt every time the federal government spends money. It’s a law, but it is not necessary, and laws can be changed. Issuing debt every time we spend money perpetuates the myth that that the government must raise revenue from the private sector in order to spend. That’s not how any of this works! If the Republicans don’t want to issue any more debt then fine, don’t, and tell the fed to continue cashing the checks and allow a negative balance on the treasury account. The world will not end and we will not have to pay interest on additional debt.
It just occurred to me that historically the Federal Government has bailed out banks and corporations that were on the brink of, or bankrupt. If Trump drops corporate taxes again should “We the People” who incidentally pay taxes… refuse to bailout corporations that don’t pay taxes? Corporations that are so poorly run they can’t survive without bailouts? Should they be allowed to fail and make room for companies that have some accountability?
I think we need to stop saying top 1%...what yearly income is that? The message needs to be they are passing tax cuts for the folks who make more than $X per year, imo.
GREAT QUESTION TIM!!! "-should you resolve the debt ceiling fairy tale, while THEY, the Republicans, that started the fairy tale, are in? And also Bravo for laying out the "fairy tale" around the debt ceiling., Brendan. This is an important mission you are on, if you can keep it bipartisan, while you are at it.
Also, gas was actually $2.41 a gallon January of 2021. It's now $3.21. That's 80 cents a gallon more expensive, and it's going down. It should start going up again soon.

NEW LAW: Standard Deduction increased to $29,200 for Married filing Joint, but Personal Exemptions of $5,300 ea eliminated. Allowed Child Tax Credit of $2,000 x 2 children = $4,000 Total Not Taxed
The good news is that if it goes back to where it was, no big deal for some. Business tax is quite another matter.
I love this channel!
How do tax cuts pay for themselves?
Liam is incredibly smart and informative. Bring him back soon! 😊
Love all the in the weeds government financial conversation today. Looking forward to seeing some real government inefficiency cuts. 😅
Great conversation guys! Informative!
He got to school house rock before I could type it 😂
Great podcast!
March madness-budget is guaranteed.
I love people acting like MAGA won't just abolish the filibuster as soon as it's inconvenient. Why would that be the historic norm that would be a step too far?
Lol, "....that's more of a straight man's activity."😂
FYI: in rural Kansas today, a dozen eggs cost $7.19. Just sayin’.
Yeah bird flu is getting really bad. I'm disappointed there isn't more talk about this.
According to my sources, the average price of a dozen eggs in Kansas is $4.41. You're getting ripped off or maybe buying organic brown eggs at Whole Foods.
40million laying hens were put down in the last year due to bird flu😒
@@derronhall495 Nope- regular eggs at a Kroger-owned store. But I’m in a tiny town and don’t have other options.
This has to get through the House and Senate right?
Yep
Teach them, Tim. Please.❤
Please, have these congressmen back on the pod.
Obviously Boyle is articulate but wouldn’t permanently eliminating the debt ceiling cause a multitude of serious problems
The Republican Politicians care about the billionaires and millionaires. The Republican do not care about how. Hard the poor people have to struggle financially.
Bro my congressman!
I like this guy!
Instead of giving more to the ultra wealthy in tax cuts, support home owners in CA & FA by subsidising home insurance. Why isn't Trump thinking about them?
net worth of the 98th percentile is 60% of net worth of the 99th
Is doge going to cut programs that benefit musk and vivek? Maybe we don't need a space program if people can't afford to eat or pay for health care? musk says there is going to be short term pain to achieve long term prosperity! But not program that benefits him!! You might think he has enough money but if you listen he wants more and also he wants to WIN whatever it takes!
He wants to be the first trillionaire
Yep
I am more confused about what “reconciliation” actually means than I was before Mr Donovan started explaining it. WTF!
That first bloke seems like a nice enough fella. But has he met the current GOP congresspeople?
We don't need to hear debates but perhaps civil round tables now & then
Tim, if you read this & are still reading I have an example on the importance of understanding different points of view.
Yay! Here we go!
This conversation (early in the podcast) makes me feel ill. Where is what's good for the majority of the population and the country's interests?
But I do appreciate the info. So, thanks, Tim, as always.
7:00 If they repeal the ACA they will never be elected again 🙄😮🤬🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦
I think we need to stop saying top 1%...what yearly income is that? The message needs to be they are passing tax cuts for the folks who make more than $X per year, imo.
Exactly
Do any of these tax policies help lower the price of eggs? Gas?
GREAT QUESTION TIM!!! "-should you resolve the debt ceiling fairy tale, while THEY, the Republicans, that started the fairy tale, are in? And also Bravo for laying out the "fairy tale" around the debt ceiling., Brendan. This is an important mission you are on, if you can keep it bipartisan, while you are at it.
Gas was $1.78 a gal 4 years ago
When no one was driving because of Covid. Of course it was cheaper.
Also, gas was actually $2.41 a gallon January of 2021. It's now $3.21. That's 80 cents a gallon more expensive, and it's going down. It should start going up again soon.
That first guest was not fun to listen to at all.
Tim, I would love to see you get Kamala Harris as a guest.
