AKIRA changed a lot for me fashion wise & really showed how outfits and expression truly evolves into a movement. I'm not big into techwear, more of a workwear person; but the growth of style has been intriguing to watch.

      @corbin7020  3 роки тому +7

I slept on AKIRA for a long time really until researching for this video. For me it was Blade Runner 2049 which changed fashion for me. Workwear is interesting because a lot of the fundamentals (such as practicality, functionality, and wearability,) overlap with other styles like techwear.

i am SO glad you brought up star wars cause while i might not be a fashion guy i am definitely a star wars guy, for better or for worse, and honestly? coruscant SHOULD be a cyberpunk setting! the entire planet is one massive city, with the rich and powerful LITERALLY at the top of society while the common people might never see natural light, just the perpetual glow of neon. the clone wars actually touches on this a little with the martez sisters, showing how coruscant residents who aren't politicians or space wizards not only live a completely different life, but can also resent the people who live on the surface, with good reason in many cases. i'd love to see some star wars media that actually digs into that potential for a coruscant based cyberpunk story. the city aesthetic combined with the "used universe" design philosophy and the power structures make it a really compelling setting. anyway, that's my tangentially related youtube comment rant for the day!

I really enjoyed this video man. I feel like the cool thing about Cyberpunk fashion is that it can be mixed into a lot of different types of fashion and still feel like it could be from the Cyberpunk genre. For example in a cyberpunk world, overpopulation might be one the biggest problems within that world, so you could see all walks of life incorporate their version of what they would wear within the cyberpunk world and how seem less it feels cause it's such a common thing to see in that world due to the overpopulation. Another example I feel like would fit within that Cyberpunk would be people incorporating clothing styles from past eras into the cyberpunk world like how we are doing it now, like how the bomber jacket is a huge staple within the genre, and we can see it has been a staple from WW2, to the 80s to our current time. Keep up the good work man.

This was beautiful. Thank you so much for all the work that must have gone into this, wow! I’ve been waiting for CyberPunk to be readily available to the masses for decades. I know many people hate when something new or reinvented becomes more mainstream, but not me! It adds to the look and feel while out in the world. Plus, I feel when someone truly enjoys something, it’s not because it’s scarce or not well known. That’s more of being drawn to the scarcity itself which is artificial and forever changing.

@@corbin7020 I can see the thought that went into it. Also I'd like to build on the idea that the cyberpunk genre responds to fears of corporate control and technological infiltration. The fashion industry itself is seeing immense growth with conglomerates such as the LMVH group, and it begs the question...will creativity die in the pursuit of profit? It will be very interesting to see how young, emerging designers respond to this shift and express themselves as a way of retaliating to the diminishing fashion culture.

Great video! To me techwear aesthetic is very "Cyber" but there's little "Punk" in it. Pure Tech fits usually look corporate and/or militaristic. The "low lifes" of cyberpunk setting would mostly wear clothes inspired by workwear and various subcultures, with elements of technical fashion. Vaclav from Deus Ex: Mankind Divided would be a good example of what I have in mind.

    • @corbin7020

    That. was. beautiful!
As a "fashion conscious" society we are so caught up in reinventing the past and for a while now I have found a fascination with Cyberpunk and it's ability to look beyond that. I really enjoyed that you explored the relation between both this subculture and that of Techwear, how they're often grouped to be one and the same, and yet they're not mutually exclusive.
I must say I have had scattered thoughts on how to succinctly describe or define Cyberpunk (in fashion) as a genre, I have often struggled to elaborate more than "dystopian"... without rambling, or I've just referred to the film equivalent.
However, thanks to your delightfully concise summary, I feel I have a clearer picture of what it truly embodies, as both a segment in fashion but also it's constantly evolving role and purpose in the culture of today.

Adding the summary was definitely needed, this was my first video essay and I would always want to go in different directions when writing the script. distilling "cyberpunk fashion" from cyberpunk media, who's core values don't always have much to do with fashion was not as clear cut as I thought it was going to be.

Great video! as a lifelong lover of cyberpunk/techwear style, I noticed that I also have a special attraction to the more niche, warcore category. after watching this video, I realize that I too am being shaped by the world events around me. EX: the current European conflict. I guess that subconsciously, I was expressing these feelings through my clothing style.

Functional and technical garments deserve such a vaster audience, but sadly there's not that many out there with the necessary knowledge to offer an informed look on it. If anyone has any other channels I should see in this space, I'd love to check them!

Beautiful video Corbin, the quality here is insane!
I always loved the influence of time and how we perceive it and it's influence on the arts. If we look at fashion in particular, we're stuck in a loop of past trends from the late 1900s. However techwear and other similar fashion aesthetics almost do the opposite. I think how we perceive these dystopian and hyper-futuristic futures to look like, stem from how we believed the future to be like back in the 1970s for example, where it was said we'd be" driving around in flying cars" in 2015. Those lost futures that haven't came to fruition, I believe have influenced the super modern futures that films like Blade Runner and thus the styles of clothing we see in those films. In a sense, the past always influences the future.
I think you would find the concept of Hauntology very interesting to look into further. It is the idea that we're at the ends of time and we're perpetually stuck in a loop, constantly being haunted from the past. I believe it directly influences pop culture today massively. Although technology has progressed massively, the concept of hauntology rules that our cultural progression has remained very cyclical.
I really enjoyed watching this vid, very informative and some really great points. I hope to see more of these types of videos in the future!

Thank you man! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts as well! Its interesting how in the heyday of cyberpunk (1980s-1990s) the fashion was almost a combination of old and a prediction of the future (ie original blade runner, looks like 1940s fashion but propelled into a future dystopia).
I just looked up Hauntology and thats a very interesting concept. very relevant to our fashion world today I think! Thats one of the reasons why I like techwear because its different from the old.

Well done! I think you should check out Julius and it's diffusion line Niløs. The older collections look 100% dystopian and quite inspirational, Horikawa (the designer) has stated that he draws inspiration from Akira, Blade Runner and Tokyo as well as from military clothing. Also you can see how the aesthetic of the brand changes in 2013-16 still being cyberpunkish but in another, more refined way. I wouldn't say modern Julius is what it used to be, but then there's Niløs which has more of a cyberpunk streetwear style and is not as subtle as the style of the brands you've mentioned.
The Viridi-Anne is another brand that I think you'll like (even more than those I mentioned above). Tomoaki Okinawa often uses high-quality technical fabrics such as schoeller, cordura, etc. and mixes techwear with avant-garde formal wear.
Thank you for making such an interesting and long video without trying to cut corners!

It's funny to me that this is the first of your videos I've seen. I've been into tech wear (and cyberpunk) for years now, and know other creators drop your name. 😎 I really like your take on the topic, you coming to the genre via fashion is really interesting as I am the opposite. When Akira, GITS, BR, Neuromancer etc... first came out there was no market for the fashion we have today. Hell I played the table-top version of Cyberpunk2077 🤷‍♂️ #techwear certainly didn't exist. When I first saw #techninja someplace, maybe EH, my head almost exploded. I was pleasantly surprised with your video, by that I mean the evolution of my style has been directly influenced by science fiction and cyberpunk in particular, before anyone outside of the community knew the term 'techwear', I would tell my friends I dressed as a background character in a Sci-Fi movie. To hear that you came to the genre through the fashion is a testament to how much this genre has influenced design and art since the 80s and 90s. As you said, not everything tech wear is cyberpunk, but it is also true that not everything cyberpunk is tech wear. I think the social, political, economic, and environmental anxieties of our world now have absolutely given the Cyberpunk genre a new life. We should also consider (I know I do, living here in LA) that both Akira and Blade Runner took place in 2019, combine that with a pandemic and it seems causal to me that "techwear" had it's highest search frequency in 2020, nearly twice the previous high the year before. \end.rant

good video and very interesting topic. For future video essays i'd recommend working more on structure (i found that some sentences introduced topics and dont finish them) and making sure that the "tone" stays consistent. (some sentences feel more professional and "essay-like" while others feel more relaxed and informal). A smaller nitpick would be the pacing feels a bit up and down, like the tempo of the sentences and how fast you say them. Once again good video and i hope to see more content like this it was pretty interesting!
