Dropping my recommendation for a movie: Redline. Some of the most stunningly beautiful animation you will ever see with a plot and characters that feel like they came right out of some kind of alternate universe, sci-fi version of JoJo
If you’re looking for anime movies, I highly recommend anything directed by Satoshi Kon, a legendary filmmaker who was truly ahead of his time but tragically passed away too soon. Here are a few of his masterpieces: 1. Paprika (2006): A visually stunning, mind-bending journey where dreams and reality collide. 2. Perfect Blue (1997): A gripping psychological thriller about a former pop idol facing an identity crisis, an obsessive fan, and a murder mystery. Intense and unforgettable. 3. Tokyo Godfathers (2003): A heartwarming and funny holiday tale about three homeless strangers who find a baby on Christmas Eve and embark on a touching journey through Tokyo. You can’t go wrong with any of these-they’re all brilliant!
I came to suggest Satoshi Kon too but yeah, you definitely should include Millennium Actress. I personally think it's one of the best movies of all time and rate it higher than Paprika (and I love Paprika).
You know what else is amazing and has a Frieren vibe? Spice and Wolf. Not like.. I.. like to see you talk about it or something.. baka! *hides like Chopper*

My friend just finished a run of every single Ghibli movie. Grave of the Fireflies broke us, The Tale of Princess Kaguya was visually stunning, My Neighbors the Yamadas was a sleeper hit, and we both loved Porco Rosso
Porco Rosso is by far the most underrated Ghibli movie. It's so good, but i barely hear anyone talk about it (when compared to the more popular Ghibli works, i mean).
Was waiting for Look Back and Goodbye Eri, but oh well. Maybe some other Fujimoto work, you will like more. Also, kinda dissapointed that you will not review Jojo manga, because its excellent and anime may not come out soon enough. Witch Hat Atelier anime may be not as good as the PV, because the trailer is outsourced and the animation studio already known for some production problems in the past.
the animation studio was able to do some incredible work in zom 100, if you look past the horrible working conditions and delays. the end product looked great
I'm on chapter 45 of Witch Hat. I love it so much! The art is beautiful! It reminds me so much of the original illustrations for Wonderful Wizard of Oz. My movie recommendation is Howl's Moving Castle.
Tatsuki Fujimoto`s Manga "Chainsaw man" is amazing, my fav and very popular. highly recommended if u want a very popular manga with great writing, caracters and amazing plot twist.
A Silent Voice is a beautiful anime film that came out the same year as Your Name. Don’t look up too much what it’s about since it can surprise you, but know that it’s really good and that it definitely fits your taste
With Jojo's Part 7, why not encourage more people to read manga? Manga is great! And more people are reading it. Remember back in the day when watching anime wasn't mainstream? I'm hoping we can push for manga to be similarly more accepted and commonplace.
I'm reading the manga so if I wait for the anime I'd be talking about both, which would show the anime only people the manga panels and talk about both together. You never know, I may love the manga so much that i decide to talk about it before the anime is produced, I'm just not going to commit to it right now
Jojo's Part 7 is pretty much univerally considered to be Araki's magnum opus, and it truly lives up to that, so im fully expecting a few videos gushing about it. And Assassination Classroom is one of my all time favorites. It, with no hyperbole, made me cry until I couldn't cry any more, its so spectacular. Season 1 is a lot of setup and fun, but Season 2 is an emotional juggernaught and one of the best coming of age stories I've ever experienced.
My recommendation of something I'm absolutely sure you'll love is an animated series called Scavengers Reign. It's one of the best pieces of media to come out in the past decade. You have to check it out
I'm so happy you're loving Witch Hat Atelier, it's become a new favorite for me for every reason you mentioned! The paneling and art in the manga is so beautiful and the story is unafraid to tackle serious themes while staying hopeful. As for visually beautiful and emotional movies, I highly recommend In This Corner of the World!
I would love to see you occasionally mix in a series or two that are more under appreciated here in the west. For example, I would love to see your take on March Comes in Like a Lion or Chihayafuru which are both amazing coming of age stories/ romances about playing Japanese board/ card games
I do try to mix them in here and there - I've done a lot of videos on Avatar the last Airbender and just this quarter talked about Arcane. I also have Scavengers Reign on my list! I'll look into both of your recommendations as well :)
@@merphynapier42 Aw, thank you so much! I'm looking forward to seeing if you jive with either of them. Though, to clarify, I just meant anime and manga that aren't super popular outside of Asia (and especially Japan) Though I am excited to hear you are eyeing Scavengers Reign
Taking about movies, I heavily recommend Mamoru Oshii's filmography. These include the Ghost in the shell movies, patlabor 1,2, angels egg and the sky crawlers. Each one of them have wonderfully realised themes and truly nothing like it anywhere else~~
I would love for you to check more of Ascendance of a Bookworm. The anime has three seasons and a new one is coming soon. It's a great fantasy story and the best isekai by far.
Assassination Classroom is pretty enjoyable & I believe u'll like it a good amount. I NEED A DAIMA VID! It's genuinely the BEST DB had been in SO LONG & SO CONSISTENTLY! ALSO for u it'll be a GREAT lead in to Super if u ever start that. For movie recs I think u might like Perfect Blue or Millennium Actress both by Satoshi Kon(really any of his films) U might also like "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" or Summer Wars by Mamoru Hosoda
you HAVE to do a review for the p7 manga because its just that much of a step up in quality from everything before it. it really is just that much better (not that the previous parts are bad or anything).
I know next to nothing about Steel Ball Run other than people putting it close to or on the same level as The Golden Age from Berserk. Like Akira, somehow, just completely locked in and made one of the greatest manga arcs ever. Cannot wait to finally start reading it with you.
I’ve been putting off on Dragonball Daima, waiting to eventually binge it. If you’re going to watch it, I might as well do the same. I remember Gavin also loved Witch Hat Atelier. Maybe something I should look into. Assassination Classroom I think is pretty polarizing, people either love it or they don’t. It’s very character-driven so the main plot crawls at a snails pace.
Hey merphy i really love your videos , any plans on covering the new HxH chapters ? Also my movie suggestion would definitely be “ i want to eat your pancreas” or “ 5 centimeters per second”
I really want to recommend the movie "Pompoko" to you because I know how much you loved Yokais and the folklore around them. It's not a masterpiece like "Chihiro" but it's still a fun and sweet movie many tends to forget.
Made in abyss is probably the most emotional show you would ever watch. The world is haunting in its beauty and is the best world building out of any show.
Maquia is definitely a movie that should be up your alley Merphy…It’s one of my favourite and all the qualities in movies you stated you gravitate towards are all in this so if you see this definitely give it a shot
I'm really glad you're enjoying Witch Hat Atelier. I remember quite a while ago you asked for manga recommendations on a video and i commented with that series because it seemed like a perfect match
The animatioj of Violet Evergarden (13 eps and one movie) is as beautiful as Your Name and Suzume, but it will make you cry your tears quota for the next 3 to 7 years. So proceed with caution

I haven’t experienced them myself, but you’re the first person I’ve heard say mid things about “Goodbye Eri” and “Look Back”. Everyone I’ve seen has said in no uncertain terms that they are life changing stories. Real wild rides.
Sounds like a good line up! Please make a DB Diama review, love to hear your thoughts on it! Movie recommendations: Wolf Children, Garden of Words, & Ride your wave. Not a movie, but a mini series you might like is VAMPIRE IN THE GARDEN.
i’m excited to see your DB Daima videos! i saw in a previous video you said you were gonna watch FLCL but i couldn’t find a video about it. which video do you talk about FLCL?
It’s kinda sad that you are not going to make a video about Goodbye Eri or Look Back, I was expecting those, but oh well. Do try to watch Look Back some day! It is a wonderful adaptation. By the way, I’m assuming you are planning to change the focus of your channel to anime more than manga? I understand your point to wait for anime adaptations of Jojo part 7 or Witch Hat to release to post videos about it, but I thought the focus of the channel was manga, not anime.
I do both. I'm basically doing similar to what I did with AoT where I enjoy the story on both mediums, but my content itself is far more focused around the manga than the anime. Though there are some series where I pretty much exclusively do one or the other, like I've been enjoying Jojos anime only (though I'm going to start reading manga now) and I do OP pretty much manga only.
i saw a few ppl mention it, but satoshi kon’s movies are amazing, specifically perfect blue. i would say they’re not the type of movie that you said you were drawn to, but it’s 100% worth it. it’s a psychological thriller i would say and makes you question what’s real and what’s not
Do not underestimate just HOW MANY Jojo fans have already read Part 7. There is a reason why it’s praised as highly as it is. I’m sure once you finish it you will get the urge to makd a video on it
So excited for witch hat atelier videos once the anime comes out more than anything, the art and story being so next level. Apparently, other mangaka have said that it's scary how fast the author can draw too
For the movie suggestion. Origonal Ghost in the Shell. While very heavy sci-fi, it brings in rather philosophical questions about the self and what is a soul, and the art style is stunning for the time period. It's not heavily "plot" based but it's more about conversations of the state of things than plot. The Plot that is there does lean into detective story but again, it doesn't follow the typical formula of that.
The way Araki's art gets better and better after he switches from a weekly magazine to a monthly one during Steel Ball Run is unbelievable, there could be an art museum filled with just page spreads from this series
I'm so happy to hear you'll be watching Daima! I've been eager to see you cover more DB things, and Daima has been a ton of fun so far. Thankfully they chose to make it a followup to the original manga rather than to Super or any of the modern movies, so you're all set to watch it already. I hope you enjoy it! Though since you're doing more anime movies, I'd love it if you found a chance to check out the first modern DB film, Battle of Gods. As much fun as Super and Daima have been, BoG is to this day my favorite thing to come out of the new stuff. (I say "new," but BoG is over a decade old now. Yeesh, what even is time?)
for movies i'd recommend basically everything " Satoshi Kon has made", For Ghibli I recommend Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, Wolf Children is something i highly recommend as well. If you love Dragon ball Z then i'd recommend watching the Future Trunks movie. OH PLEASE watch One Piece Fan Letter if you havent yet!
I recommend the movie Ride Your Wave. If your looking to venture out with your anime movies Merphy. If you enjoy Suzume for the female lead. This movie will deliver in that department as well.
Witch Hat is so wonderful. It's an absolute masterclass in tone management, it's a very difficult thing to make visceral nastiness and creepiness coexist comfortably with pure joy and tenderness, but Witch Hat Atelier does both so deftly. Nothing ever feels crassly exploitative or like cruelty for the sake of cruelty or overly saccharine. It positively radiates with care about both the characters and the ideas being explored through them. The next English language volume comes out in January and I'm incredibly excited to get my hands on it.
Did you try Haikyuu? I never heard any updates on that. And a cute movie you could check out really quick could be Naruto the Last. I believe it’s the only “canon” movie that shows how Hinata ends up winning over Naruto.
Yes, Witch Hat Atelier is so good! Can't wait for the anime lol For movies: Look Back, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, Belle, and Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop.
Merphy, question for you now that you've had a few years experience with manga/anime, that may even warrant a video. What lessons do you think books, particularly fantasy novels, could learn from manga? Or vise versa? I've been of the opinion that more fantasy novels should try adapting their stories to animation first before attempting to do live action.
I wish to see Onepiece Mangatubers collab with Anime onlys...there are fantastic CCs out there...the ones close to catching up being Jack, Alicia... and Jami already caught up, Michael as well.
I dont remember if you've read Magus of the Library yet. But i honestly think its one of the hest fantasy mangas out there rn. Its sort of like Frieren where (as of right now) there isnt a focus on large world ending threats or anything. But it more focuses on a specific group of people who work on literature and books. And it creates such an amazing world full of rich cultures and histories/mythologies. If you haven't I'd love for you to read it
For movies I’d recommend the works of the legendary director Satoshi Kon. Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers… his works are foundational to the genre. Also Tokyo Godfathers is a Christmas movie so now is the perfect time to watch it!
Based on the way you engage with manga and especially since you liked look back and goodbye eri, I really think that you’d enjoy digging into and analyzing chainsaw man
Just a clarificarion, Mob Psycho's autor is ONE, Look Back and Goodbye Eri autor is Tatsuki Fujimoto
oh thank you, I should have double checked on that and not gone off memory

Ass Class has got one of the best cast of characters and endings ever
Do not underestimate just HOW MANY Jojo fans have already read Part 7. There is a reason why it’s praised as highly as it is. I’m sure once you finish it you will get the urge to makd a video on it
So excited for witch hat atelier videos once the anime comes out more than anything, the art and story being so next level. Apparently, other mangaka have said that it's scary how fast the author can draw too
Part 7 is one of my favorite stories period. Look forward to your review and the (very far away) up coming anime adaptation
I love your dio cosplay.
yaaaaayyyyy she's watching assassination classroom!!!1 Lets fricking goooooooo
Ooooh Witch Hat Atelier is so great. I love it! can't wait for you to discuss it!
for movies i'd recommend basically everything " Satoshi Kon has made", For Ghibli I recommend Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, Wolf Children is something i highly recommend as well. If you love Dragon ball Z then i'd recommend watching the Future Trunks movie. OH PLEASE watch One Piece Fan Letter if you havent yet!
Neon Genesis Evangelion
There is no way Merphy reads Part 7 and doesn't have an urge to make a video about it.
Did you try Haikyuu? I never heard any updates on that.
And a cute movie you could check out really quick could be Naruto the Last. I believe it’s the only “canon” movie that shows how Hinata ends up winning over Naruto.
She DNFed Haikyuu, sadly
She watched 2 seasons of it, but it landed in the like rather than love camp and therefore didn't do any videos on it
Fair enough! Thanks!
Witch hat atelier??? 🥳🥳🥳 also you should try dandadan
Yes, Witch Hat Atelier is so good! Can't wait for the anime lol For movies: Look Back, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, Belle, and Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop.
A suggestion for a short-running series in one of the next quarters: Summertime Rendering :D
Everyone watched it will recommend it as well.
+1 on the dragon ball daima video interest counter, i'm loving the show right now
i love that you write notes one your hand lol. so excited for assassination classroom
Children Of The Sea. Probably the most visually stunnig movie, I think the trailer of the movie is enough to convince anyone.
6:05 AHHHHHHHHHHHH *composes oneself* Very nice choice, thumbs up.
If you want an anime film that’s a masterpiece that has nothing to do with Ghibli or Shinkai then you GOTTA watch A Silent Voice!!
Yep, A Silent Voice would also be my pick, man that movie got me ugly crying so many times.
She has watched it and has a review up
Thanks Merphy !
Part 7 let's gooo my favorite part and one of my favorite manga!
Based on the way you engage with manga and especially since you liked look back and goodbye eri, I really think that you’d enjoy digging into and analyzing chainsaw man
