From the album 'build a rocket boys!'
I’m a middle school teacher (2018). Students ask me if they can eat lunch in my classroom. I teach in an inner city Washington DC school. This is a standard that I play during lunch. Rough and tough kids will eat in silence while listening to this song. Even though I don’t ask them to be quiet. Thank you, Elbow. This song is magic.
That's beautiful
@@simeon54 It's educational! (U Mass)
That just about captures Elbow. Well done.xx
They probably understand the wisdom of his words. I wish I could bottle these words and give them to every young person I know. BUILD A ROCKET!!! Time is short and will soon be gone.
Beautiful.. teachers are real life upper hero’s.. well done.
Quite possibly one of the greatest songs ever written
Bold statements like this make me laugh, wisdom is something that comes with age.
@@liamwalters5029 and wise men know music is art and art is beauty and beauty is in the eye of its beholder so if he says it's best song ever then it is and wise men wouldn't argue. I personally think it's not even elbows best but that's my eyes and ears he or you cant tell me I'm wrong anymore than we can tell him.
@@liamwalters5029 you shouldn’t laugh, it may be true
@@liamwalters5029 last time I looked your view was losing 213 to 1.
Nothing compares
This was played at my best mates funeral. He was definitely a lippy kid, and a gobby grown up. Bless you Wayno, sleep tight and Ill see you in the blink of an eye.
Highly underrated as far as I am concerned.
Not really, anything above a million views is hardly underrated
'The cigarette senate was everything then'... Garvey can paint an entire life experience in a single sentence. I'm humbled by what he and the guys create.
Absolutely.
I thought bit was scent’
I wish I was as musically competent as that piece of tape.
You are.
I don’t remember writing this, I was much wittier back then.
@@albert276 damn what changed in 9 months? Covid?
Best comment on the internet. Period.
@@jonathanhall6163 I couldn't stop laughing bro, so true
This song is like a security blanket to me...everything about it is so comforting...
this world needs more Elbow.
This song sums up my youth growing up in the UK... I still want to build a rocket even now. Thank you Elbow for transporting me back to a happy time.
👌
This made me cry. Music very rarely makes me cry; but this reached somewhere within me that I lost a while ago. This is the most beautiful song I have heard in a long time.
everytime this song plays someone just happens to be cutting onions in front of my eyes. :c
ha ha
I'm cutting onions right now. They're incredibly strong that's for sure.
@@neilbowers6956 lmao 😂😂❤️
i can be one
What a beautiful voice this gentle man has!
Я с тобой согласен!
Yup
Do you remember, do you recall... Peter Gabriel ?
@@MiguelHernandez-rc8fo I always thought the same.
Everytime....he says that line "build a rocket boys", it just shoots through my heart. Beautiful voice and song!!!!
Rosslyn Picton what’s the meaning behind the line? Literally build a rocket?! Or something else?!
@@Jimski234 It's a metaphor. It means that at that age (the age of lippy kids) you feel you can do anything - including building a rocket.
@@Jimski234 If you put the line before it with it, it makes more sense. "Do they know those days are golden, build a rocket boys." It's a reminder to all to live in the moment, chase your dreams, enjoy what you have.
Got a tattoo based on these lyrics for that reason. And yes, it sits on my arm, directly above my elbow. lol
Me and my father's relationship can be pretty awkward at times, I don't see him all the time now that I am at Uni in a different country and he often works abroad. But this song really brings us together. We both know the lyrics off by heart and singing it just comes so naturally. No other song can do this and feels very magical.
Make the most of your time together my friend, don't delay ever. Life is short, I never had that time with mine,. This song is a connection with our early life and so profound.
Never stop singing it.
Oh my word. Every time I hear this song it transports me back 25-30 years.... Oh the sweet irony, it is only now that I realise those times were golden... 😪
4 years later, but maybe that’s what makes them golden mate. The complete ignorance to what they are, otherwise it just feels like limited time. They only end when you want them too, don’t stop my dude.
I remember being 16 in the long summer of 1995 having a realisation that I was living through a special moment in my life. Briefly, I knew those days were golden.

after 35 years of dedication to Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Mark Knopfler, Clapton, this group hit my sweet spot in the last 5 years and will never leave me. Great music
Perhaps this is the greatest music video ever made? No flash, flesh or fantasy just the simplicity of brilliant musicians performing one of the most moving and intelligent popular songs of the early 21st century. Lancashire's finest export! Well done lads.
I could not agree more !!!!
I have to agree
actually it contains many of the flashy pop camera mechanics - though not to an extent where it is evident. because quite frankly the subject is so damn interesting and capable.
I definitely add to the same sentiment, agree 100%.
Lot's of videos like this. But the song beautiful.
R.I.P. MY FRIEND CSABA VAS FROM PÉCEL (HUNGARY) WHO WAS THE BEST FRIEND OF ME. HE WAS BORN IN 1ST OF MARCH IN 1972- DIED 7 TH OF FEBRUARY IN 2014. I MISS YOU TERRIBLY, MY BROTHER! GOD HELP YOU ON YOUR WAY!!!
RIP CSABA VAS!

This song makes me ache with joy. I can actually feel it swelling inside me, rising and falling with the music! I can't put it into words, but I get a kind of weird feeling where I want to simultaneously let out an abrupt laugh at the same time as getting the sensation of tears welling up...?! Maybe I'm just odd....
This is perfect. Just complete perfection.
Thats not odd.... Thats beautiful!! I have the same feeling in my chest when i hear this song. A big ball want to break out in tears and joy like a kid. My little girl inside me is wandering in the fields and play with the little insects who living between they grass. And play with the little fish in the lake. I mis it. (English is not my first language sorry for the mistakes...)
That's true and deep joy! With a sweet splash of nostalgia...❤
Another masterpiece from the boys.
After the very sudden passing of my father in law last February, listening to Elbow has been a rollercoaster of emotions. Collectively we all loved them but now we fight with sadness but also fond memories of seeing them live together. Summer nights at Eden Sessions in Cornwall, arena concerts in Sheffield or just generally sat around a table drinking, having a laugh and an Elbow record on in the background. This band will forever divide our families hearts with love and sorrow. They are a masterpiece, their music is a masterpiece.
One of the greatest songs of our time. It's as simple as that.
When you want to singalong but decide you don’t want to interrupt a beautiful voice
Let it go. Trust me you'll feel better ;)
Oh I know the feeling. Nightswimming by R.E.M. has the same effect.
That is me every time I have been at an Elbow concert.
soo true
I literally sound like a choking raccoon but singing is genuinely the only thing that makes me feel better so 👍💃
Never mind a grammy, this song deserves a nobel prize. Beautiful!
I STILL get chills whenever I hear that intro.... a criminally underrated band.
Bands come and go all the time, but Elbow has been with me for years. I came into this song not knowing what "Lippy Kids" even meant, and left wanting to return to my childhood with them.
This is just shivers from start to finish. It makes me wish I was older so I could miss my youth. Odd.
Also, what a master class in subtlety. Like many of their songs, it goes nowhere but is completely riveting. The live fade too..
This is one of the greatest songs of all time!
One of my favorite songs of theirs ( I say favorites as you cannot just have one favorite Elbow song)
so true
What others would you recommend, since I unfortunately don't know them very well.
I love the 'Bones of you' that is awesome, and so is 'The Birds', and also 'My sad captains' off their new album.
Mie Kühne I would also go with Mirrorball, Scattered Black and White, One Day Like this, Forget Myself.
imperial109 Thank you for the recommendation.
I've been revisiting Elbow a lot lately, and this is just a beautiful song. Brings me to tears as I sit at my desk....
i have the same feeling dawn so good and the tears pfff i just lost a good friend
Lippy kids on the corner again
Lippy kids on the corner begin
Settling like crows
Though I never perfected the simian stroll
The cigarettes senate was everything then
Do they know those days are golden?
Build a rocket boys
Build a rocket boys!
One long June
I came down from the trees
And kerbstone cool
You were a freshly painted angel
Walking on walls
Stealing booze
And hour long hungry kisses
And nobody knew me at home anymore
Build a rocket boys!
Build a rocket boys
Build a rocket boys!
Lippy kids on the corner again
Lippy kids on the corner begin
Settling like crows
And I never effected that simian stroll
No
Do they know those days are golden?
Build a rocket boys

Thank you!🌹
Beautifully evokes those transitional teenage summers spent with friends.
Thank you for this
I'm only 11 but still one of elbows biggest fans I've been to concerts I have signed and framed posters for most of there albums and my dream is to meet and speak to guy and the band
Really nice to see kids enjoying REAL music. There's hope for the next generation at last 😊
Hold on to that dream; met the lads after their New York show last Thursday (2 November). Humble in person and completely lovely. I spoke to them all, plus took pics. Talked with Guy about his BBC radio show, as well as about his new family. Seen them perform live four times, so far:)
Firetrap productions I hope that happens for you ❤️
You should young man, sneak into a pub where Guy Garvey is sometime and say hi, I met him when a friend was interviewing him a few years ago and he was the nicest human you could possibly run into.
Ehh say no to drugs though etc.
@@daisydukes7909 me and my friend Louis are pretty much the only people in our year (9) that like music older than 2010, and I think it's really important that my generation listen to older music because in my opinion modern pop is all the same. I wasn't there to witness any of it but I feel as though music then had passion and soul behind it, and I feel that elbow perfectly recreates this.
Man alive, I have so much love for this song for so many reasons. Pure poetry. Plus, I'm 47 and from northern England. The lyrics resonate like a Tibetan Singing Bowl. 🙏🏾
So great! "Nobody knew me at home anymore."
My introduction to Elbow was Grounds For Divorce on World Cafe - I thought it was something new from Peter Gabriel. And like someone else said, once you're in, you're in for good. Thank you Elbow!
❤
Elbow should be what every band hopes to be one day. Words cannot describe Garvey's voice.
Still brings tears to my eyes after all these years.
This song is nothing short of beautiful. I saw them live in Sheffield this time last week and they blew us away, few bands have musical talent to rival Elbow.
wow, this song really gets to me emotionally, it felt like only yesterday i was that kid.
live life to the full
One of the best tracks I've heard in the last 10 years . . . . this is what music is about :)
2010 . My god life speeds by, but this track is timeless. A classic song.
If you haven't yet, you MUST see these guys live!
The wife made me go to Pulp in the park, Elbow were on main stage. Now pulp were brilliant but she knew I was gutted. She surprised me with tickets at the (Manchester) Apollo. They were flawless. A very special night.
Oh my God...would love it!! Come to New Zealand Elbow!!!!!!🙏❤
I love this man's voice....
Yes he has a very beautiful and melodic voice.
This performance, live at Werchter, the heat , the pulse of the people... it was everything!!! one of the best moments of my life
I had a Gene Genie moment when I first heard this track and they don`t come around that often.Thank God for 6 music.
I never get tired of listening to this, it's a beautiful piece of music
I absolutely love this song....the song hits home so hard now i see my teenage boys growing up. Love it
I just discovered Elbow. Wow. I am totally in love. And 'Lippy Kids' is simply sublime.
I love it too .. The seldom seen kid is a masterpiece -
It is, but Asleep In The Back comes close IMO
Give Guy Garvey's solo album a spin, 'Courting the Squall.' The man is a poet.
It struck me how we acknowledge and admire his observations when he is an adult, but i wonder how a young, artistically minded man in his early teens perceived what he was seeing right there and then. Was he so different in his thinking then as well? Or did he blend in and those memories came flooding back but translated into a language that the rest of us can't write down? Was he so self aware of how he could pick up on what we all did as kids?
Wow, just started crying after 2 minutes and couldn't stop till the song was over. This was an amazing journey you guys took me. Touched me right in the heart. Can't wait to meet, see and listen to you guys this year in Landgraaf. Can't wait to be touched like this again. So, so beautiful! First and only band who did this to me, like this.
Incredible, authentic performance of intelligent music that is on a whole other level to most modern artists'. So moving.
ELBOW are a class act..really appreciated their music so much!
One of my favourite songs of all time - no doubt. No doubt!
WoW, where has this band been all my life!
Start with the seldom seen kid - it's fuckin brilliant ;)
wrexshunt aijp
i keep coming back to these tunes; something pleasing about (not only the music but) the imagery
That look he gives at 5:05, "we have something bloody special here lads". Epic!
He’s given that look more than once but then they are something special.
voor mij een van de beste songs van Elbow
I listened to this song on a beach while my students skipped rocks on the water. it brought me to tears then and it brings me to tears now.
I cant believe 14 people cant see pure musical talent at its best. No gimmicks, no frills just feckin musical genius. I love life. Thanks Elbow.
410 now, ten years later :( not too bad... your comment was 10 years ago so plz say something so I know u aint dead, cheers
when the guitar goes on.
i cant hold my tears.
all the memories, their coming back in this moment.
so clear.
Heavenly.. The music, the lyrics.. 'All' your songs paints a beautiful picture right infront of you.. Love..
Those golden days... Miss em..
Absolutely fantastic track. This means so much to so many people in so many different reasons. Superb. Thanks guys. 👍
I needed to cry, this helped me find my tears. I feel so alone.
I hope you found someone, I hope you are okay
I hope you found happyness ❤️
This song reminds me that we are all just "faking it to make it", and that's not a particularly bad thing in fact it's beautiful common ground to have with the rest of the human race. Now if those twisted crazies who believe they have actually "arrived" could simply get over themselves we'd be cooking with gas! I'll now step down off my soap box, shut my mouth, and have a nice little cry because this stirring piece of music always gets me misty eyed thinking about how quickly my youth soared past me, and that I now have two teenage boys of my own who are getting to experience the thrill of discovery for themselves. Aaaaaaaahh this music breaks me heart every time!!!
true xxxxxxxx
eloquently put.
Randall Appleby How beautifully put 👍
It is such a beautiful piece of music. Like you Randall, with my kids halfway there, my oldest son riding shotgun with this CD in heavy rotation as we traveled back east last summer; a father must not always be strong. This song just wrings me out. So well done. And love what You wrote.
Helemaal top!
That moment when he switches from the keyboards to the piano almost at the end, is pure bliss. Is like going into Heaven
These songs are poetry....
the 'golden' lyric at 1.30 is when my heart literally skips a beat. it's so hauntingly beautiful - and when i saw this live, it was one of those live music moments i will never ever forget...
This song is absolutely immense. I can close my eyes and instantly fall back to the 80’s when I was a nipper. “Lilly kids on the corner again” - my mam looking out the window. “Walking on walls” - me.
Right there with you mate. Playing army with sticks for guns, shot you……. No mate you missed, 3 machine gun sounds as standard 👍
This song makes me well up every time.
I was a lippy kid, hangin round the side of the spar shop in the north west, we were curd stone cool 😎
Pretty sure its "Curb stone cool" ; might be wrong tho
Kerbstone. You know the thing, edge of the pavement...
😂😂😂
Just discovered this song - working downstairs and it was playing in the kitchen. Came upstairs to see what it was. It's beautiful - his voice and the instruments. Amazing song :)
Always transports me back to the summer of 77 in Bury! Jubilee Year and one long June indeed. I think Station Approach ranks my number one though.
I fell in love to this song
then i fell involve with you
always been always will. sorry jesus
*****
WoW Jesus I thought you were dead !!!

Thats ever so kind of you ! How did you know I was a Bastard ? Oh I forgot you know everything.
Thank you for having my back Jesus, hahaha ;)
I remember being in year 9, and I had this teacher for design technology. Never really talked to him much other than getting notes on my schoolwork. One day he starts playing this song on his laptop, and I remember hearing it before and having a pretty good memory for lyrics, I sang it lowly. He was kind of amazed that I had heard the song, asked if I was interested in listening to more, he gave me a usb stick with all their albums (at the time) on them. Been a fan ever since.
I love Elbow. They're Brilliant. But this song... this is beyond special to me. It reminds me of my Wedding day. Exactly 10 years ago. Went running right before getting married with this playing loop in my earphones. This will forever mean joy and happiness to me. Thank you guys.
To put it simply, these guys have the potential to be everybody's favourite band, if only everyone would let themselves properly listen and enjoy a song for what a song is meant to be.
even better than the album version!
The longevity of this song is astounding. 10 times replayed without boredom.
The voice of this guy, IT'S JUST EXCEPTIONAL! I can hear elbow music all day! Love it!
You mean this Guy.
What an amazing track, I’m struggling a little bit to put it into words.
It sounds so vulnerable and naked you can hear everything that’s going on, nothing is drowning out or being drown by any other sound or instrument. And then his voice just drifting over the top but again still not overpowering any other sounds. It sounds really daft but I get this mental picture of his voice “crowdsurfing” the music
And the lyrics are simply stunning as are all elbow tracks, just amazing story telling.

on rare occassions a musician or group will piece together a gem,a melody to soothe our souls to awaken our senses, right now elbow are that rare occassion.this is a headfone moment each time we listen, get lost in the music and roam through the archives of childhood memories.if life was such that it could be experienced in song then this would do for me
Elbow has been my favorite group for several years. Most beautiful lead, great lyrics and the melodies are gorgeous. What a gift they are to the music loving public. Thanks for this upload!💖
Such an evocative song. A heartfelt call to youth... possibly our own, misspent... Brilliant...
been feeling depressed because of a breakup feel better listing to this
Every time I hear this it's just a beautiful heartbreak 💔 every time I hear this I well up... I loved singing this with my arms around you... Crushed x those days are way colder... To all the times I was happy as a child and with my freshly painted angel who painted the most beautiful little cherub 💔💔
Always 🌟
This should last forever
i feel weird after listening this (sad and grey), but its really nice
yess.. it's makes me empty but warm at the same time..
I used to sing this to my son. Told him it was his song. To dream big. To fly out and live his dreams. He's now a teacher in Thailand, and I miss him so much. Its hard to listen to this now, but I know he's really happy. We all went to see Elbow in Manchester. I think its was the last night of a tour, and all the bands families came on stage to sing One Day like This.
Wonderful music from an amazing bunch of guys who hail from my part of the country. Love it.
You can see the genuine emotion and passion he embraces when he sings, giving them a 'real' sound.......
Do they know those days are golden?

Prachtig nummer...
jesus christ........ thankyou.... amazing...
A very affecting song, just beautiful, Elbow at their finest here.
Just love it 😢 first time I heard elbow was radio 2 studio, singing we have all the time in the world 😢 and that what I’m having at my funeral ❤❤❤
This is just perfect.
I never heard of this band until it took a stage at the Coachella Festival in California and I remember my first thought was, "Thank God! Talent just got here..." Got to see the guys again when they played the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco. What a pleasant discovery they have been. Sure wish our young musicians in the States were exposed to more acts like this than what they're being fed.
love this tune. I have to come back to it once or twice a year. Here's what I get out of it "your pissing your life away, go do something with it"
The other night I was driving aimlessly around my hometown with nothing to do. It was late and I felt weirdly restless. And for some reason this song came to mind, and I knew I'd be alright if I just went home to my room and listened to it. I was right. It's that kind of beautiful.
Damn I feel old. I used to be one of those lippy kids growing up. I can only hope I am now a lippy adult.
Greetings from Giza, Egypt
Greetings from Liverpool ;)
I keep listening to this a it's just perfect.
Makes you feel happy to be alive sending love to all from Northern Ireland stay kind everyone god bless guy and the lads can’t wait to see you next year 👏
