I feel that it is ridiculous and misleading to rank fleet size of Fiji Airways to that of Air Niugini especially to conclude marginal ranking advantage and standard for Air Niugini. Its like ranking/comparing David and Goliath. You can compare the two but not rank due to:
1. Population size : the population of PNG dwarfs that of Fiji. Hence, the need for aviation travel far outplaces Fiji in that regard.
2. Topography and landmass. PNG vast landmass and mountainous topographic nature creates the need for aviation travel; Hence, the need for passenger and cargo aircraft. Moreover, extensive rural communities and towns develop smaller airports which is serviced by Air Niugini. Airline numbers becomes a need.
3. Proximity to Pacific & Asian economic powerhouse. As a thriving nation, PNG,s vast natural resources and the need to do business requires significant investment in its airline fleet to inject as much needed resources as possible for the benefit of the multitude.
4. More fleet means increased national prestige and pride. However, there is greater risk to bear especially in this unprecedented economic and aviation hardships.
Overall; i feel Fiji Airways is still more competative to most regional airlines. Its expansion and development are in line with economic growth. Fleet size is comparable for a small country with less than a million inhabitants.
The ranking is not only based on population sizes or landmass..yes PNG is bigger in those two areas but in terms of 'International Standard and Ranking' air nuiginea is miles..miles away from Fiji airways status. Fiji airways is not only competing regionally but globaly. Fiji airways is the only Pacific airline in the 4star airlines category. There is no other Pacific airline highly standard like Fiji airways. Other airlines like air nuiginea is competing regionally..and they cannot be compared to Fiji airways standard.
Just like you said, it's like comparing Goliath and David. Air nuigeneas ranking internationally is lowly and below than of Fiji airways standard and ranking. Air nuigenea is no match.. just no match to Fiji airways status!! End of story!

It's absurd to say which one of the 2 airlines is the best. The 2 Melanesian brothers are different in many aspects. Fiji is smaller than PNG both geographicaly and demographically and so their assets are based on individual needs. Love our Fijian brothers and sisters: Papua New guinea

A lot of misinformation. Air Niugini's 39 destinations include domestic ones. You should compare international destinations. Also Fiji Airways has a younger fleet and it is a member of the One World Alliance encompasses 25 of the world's top airlines. Try and compare the Fiji Airways business offerings from its Business Class in the A350s and A330s and the lounger at Nadi Airport and you will see a big difference.
Fiji Airways flies direct to the United States - LA and SF and Singapore routes Air Niugine does not have. It also has more flights to Australia and direct flights to 3 cities in New Zealand compared to Air Niugini.
Well Air Niugini is bigger than what you think. Plus it has the best all local pilots unlike Fiji airways always hiring expatriate pilots
