I'm not massively into silent films, but this and 'Nosferatu' are exceptions. I love this horror/tragedy - what an actor Conrad Veidt was: I agree with what you say about his eyes! Thanks for reviewing this!
This movie, is a jewel, not just of german expresionism, but of cinema history; i don"t know that much about movies, but, there's a scene where their friends pretends for the blind girl that he is still at the circus, and calls his name, well, i think, that moment was the birth of voices in movies, i mean, instead of using background music, they put voices on that place, simply magic; and, the jocker was born with this movie, there's an italian version, where he met Lucrecia Borgia and becomes her lover; wrll, you can say that's from where Frank Miller first, and then Nolan took the darkest version. Great movie, and Caligari, kick ass. Great review.
I ordered this a fortnight ago and still waiting on it (and thirteen other films) being delivered. I've been wanting to see this for abour ten years! I can't wait!
@@manvfilm nah, they were mostly just cheap wee buys. 50p and £1.50 DVD's. I'm going through a phase of revisiting films I rented from Blockbuster in the late 90's early 2000's to see how they hold up., so it's not costing a lot.
@@manvfilm The Gift by Sam Raimi was pretty good. Insomia was excellent. Way better than I remember, but my favourite so far is Tony Scott's Spy Game, which is phenomenal. It's so gripping.
I don't think I've ever watched a silent movie before, least not that I remember, however it is something I would like to give a go, maybe I should pick this one up. The only other that i can think of id like to watch is Metropolis I think I've been saying for 20 years I'm gonna watch that someday.
I still find the silent Laurel & Hardy movies highly entertaining and never over stay their welcome and it also depends what your interests are. If just want to break your duck on some silent movies then check out George Melies films. They are highly entertaining and include some of the first special FX in cinema's history. A Trip to the Moon - ua-cam.com/video/cBpnUoRvETA/v-deo.html The Haunted Castle - ua-cam.com/video/OPmKaz3Quzo/v-deo.html I would also recommend the 1912 stop motion film The Camera Mans Revenge, mainly because it's made with the 'reanimated' corpses of dead insects ua-cam.com/video/U424m8utJnA/v-deo.html
Metrópolis is good and really easy, for The soundtrack and it"s a great story, but dr caligari's gabinet, dr faust, vampyr, and Murneau's. Nosferatu are great options too.
Great review, Graham. The more I see about this film, the more I want it.
Lol that’s what is collectors do, encourage others to part with their hard earned cash.

Silent S are something I’m trying to ease myself into. I’ve still to watch Nosferatu.
Die Nibelungen, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, Dr Caligari, Buster Keaton Vol 1 by Eureka... the best of the genres and well worth checking out IMO.

Thanks. I feel like it was a little overwhelming on just one watch for me. It’s gonna take multiple to really appreciate the film.
@@manvfilm every master piece needs and deserves time. Btw Dr Faust and Vampyr are great ones too.
Faust I have, but yet to watch. Vampyr is definitely on my list to get at some point.
@@manvfilm you should, but then, you gonna have, perhaps to rewatch it, kinda complex film, but definitley a masterpiece.
Is this Region B locked? I love the packaging of this one better than the Flicker Alley release.
You deserve more subscribers, mate. Excellent work.
Thanks Frank, I appreciate the nice comment.
@@manvfilm Don't mention it. It's nice to see someone give decent reviews of classic cinema.
I thought this was really special. Not only a great silent movie but a great movie in general.:)
I’m with you there Chris. I honestly believe Veidt’s acting is some of the best I’ve ever seen.

Bloody hell, now that’s an order!

Found any ones that hold up really well.

Now we’re talking I love Spy Game one of Scott’s best. I love Redford’s performance and the stories about his wives!
I think I’ll get this on dvd, I just can’t afford it on blu ray at the moment because the cheapest on eBay is £20
I wouldn't't rush only, you'll pick it up eventually. For a great price no doubt.
Man v Film , that’s true, people are selling it for like £2.75 with free postage because it’s in the public domain
Good movie, Phantom of the Opera also but Nosferatu is boring the scenes with the vampire is the only good parts

I actually think the Buster Keaton films are a great starting point.
