Thanks for pointing this out. I was not aware of Black 3.0. For my testing, I stuck to traditional artist grade paints. I would have to research Black 3.0 further (to see if it is lightfast, archival, non toxic, etc). I'll have to look into it closely. Seems very interesting though!!
So glad to see this video...just a few months too late. I was doing a painting for a "black & white" show. It was so difficult to find the right black! One is a blueish black (lamp), one is a brownish black (ivory), Mars (more neutral but not quite right). Unfortunately I didn't have carbon. It turned out okay but not exactly what I hoped for. I will explore more. Thanks for another wonderful video.
I have also used black Liquitex for a while, and it does have too much transparency and it doesn't cover. I experimented spray painting black Rustoleum brand paint over the first Liquitex black paint layer, and it does cover perfectly. First, apply the first layer of black Liquitex. Let it dry for one or two hours. Then, spray paint Rustoeum brand black paint. Then, let it dry for about 24 ours before you start making your artwork; of applying paint brush strokes. You don't have to wait for the paint to dry if you're only making abstract artwork, but it's an advantage to let it dry 24 hours if you have a special project where it's necessary that your colors don't mix with the background of black paint. You can also buy a pre-painted black canvas as well.
Thanks for the great video. My latest adventures have brought me to using only black, white and red. I have always had to Gesso my canvas and do two coats of black. Keep up the great work, you are an inspiration.
Apparently ivory black is meant to be semi-transparent, and is so because of the pigments ingredient. It's more intended for mixing and has a brownish hue. I've got a collection of very cheap acrylic paints, and black is the only colour that is solid and thick. It's also just labeled "black".
Merci! C'est vraiment super intéressant et utile. Quand je veux acheter ma peinture sur Amazon (je suis en Espagne, c'est plus facile), je ne sais jamais laquelle acheter.
I find it odd that Liquitex labels their ivory black as opaque. My favorite black acrylic is Golden’s bone black (bone and ivory being mostly interchangeable terms for the same type of black) and they clearly label theirs as being semitransparent. Though I mainly like it for how it mixes with other colors without being overpowering so I wouldn’t recommend it if you want solid coverage with just black
amazing video Thank you for showing us the differences between the different blacks it was very interesting to see that they are not all the same despite everything and I was wondering if you had already tried sennelier mars black acrylic paint?
haha ;o) well don't overthink it. I just like to geek out on art supplies. If you haven't noticed any issues with your black, it's probably all good. What prompted this video for me is my initial issue with that darn Ivory black :o) Have a good week!
@@SyndiaArt hahaha I was so confident when the video started that Ivory was going to be a lot darker than some of the other ones! Totally shocked that it took two layers for it to cover the back colors :O Have a nice week too!
I find that the same colour or shade can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer (Ultramarine Blue from Golden and the same from Graham is slightly different). If I was painting a Red Wing Black Bird sitting out in the sun, I would use the Carbon Black because it looks that black and shiny in real life. It does have it's uses. I agree with you that it was too distracting on your painting.
Heyy! I was wondering which black you use for your paintings. Because you said you were the most familiar with the Mars black, but you didnt say which you use🤷♀️.
I did say it at the end of the video. From now on, I will be using professional Mars Black alone or Professional Carbon Black with a coat of Matte Medium on top. Both are as good and as black whist not too shinny. Hope this helps. Have a great week ahead :o)
Regarding the type of black paint; it all depends on the end result of your painting project. There's no right or wrong. You only have to choose for your paint to be glossy or matte. Do you want your painting to be shiny gloss? or non-light reflecting matte? It is only your choice, but you need to be careful from which brand you select. There's one thing I forgot to mention. You really don't have to worry if your paint is "glossy or not". You can spray paint transparent gloss on to your finished project with Rustoleum (spray cans from Home Depot) I have made over 100 artworks, and I have finished them with Rustoleum Clear.
Black 3.0?

I did not expect you to try the blacks on your bigger paintings. You're so brave! I'm looking forward to seeing the whole collection. Thank you!
:oD Have a lovely week ahead!
Such a pleasure to see you work👍 thank you for sharing all your discoveries with us!
Amazing lesson!! Thank you so much for sharing this. 🙏
Glad you liked it!
Your collection has grown so quickly! 🙏 Thanks so much for the tips! ❤️
Hi Loretta! Yes, it's coming along, I'm very encouraged :o) Hope you're having a good weekend.
I am jealous of art room lighting. I just started painting and I have no where to go that has natural lighting like you have. I love your videos.
Thank you. I know how you feel. For the longest time I didn't have much of a studio. Have you ever tried plein air painting?
@@SyndiaArt no I had never heard of it but that is a great idea. Thank you.
The heavy body liquitex paints are much more opaque and so much better for what you're looking for!!! I swear by the heavy body liquitex paints

Very good Information Syndia. 👌
I'm glad you found the video helpful! Have a nice weekend :o)
🙋🏻♀️🥰You are an excellent educator!!! Thank you so very much!!!
You are so welcome!
I like the matt look of the basics mars black. Wonder what it would look like with a gloss medium.

Not yet, but Sennelier is a good brand from my experience...
have you done a video on white? I'd like to see that or see one
Do you have experience with Amsterdam paints? I am wondering if their Oxide black or Ivory black is darker? and how they compare to other brands.
I've only used Amsterdam Neons, I would have to try their black.
And here I am with my Staedtler paints where the black just says... black XD

Your website has expired honney😊
I mean I know your the professional, but are you not just spreading the paint to thin? Of course you'll see through it id think
I wonder how many times you said word black in this video🤭
I know right!! :oD
Wow I’ll try it to my pants I messed it up with bleach.🫡🙏❤️
