we could turn any aircraft into a drone since the 1950 if not longer. I think they had drones during WW2. I wish i had a security clearance to learn of what what capabilities we really have, because they are so freaking awesome

Yes, even before that, but "we" were the Britons, or the French, or maybe the Austrians... Considering the first drones, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs): the Royal Aircraft Factory UK developed drones already in 1916-1917, based on designs by Dr Archibald Low. According to the Imperial Museum, The Aerial Target, a British radio-controlled aircraft flew during WW1. It became the first radio-controlled fixed-wing drone to fly under control when it was tested in March 1917. If you use the definition of UAV literally, the first was probably made by Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier. In 1782 they hosted the first public demonstration of an unmanned aircraft, a hot-air balloon in Annonay, France ...it was not radio-controlled, though. UAVs were first used as a weapon of war in 1849 when the Austrian army lofted a fleet of unmanned balloons, loaded with explosives, over the city of Venice to punish the Venetians for their attempted revolt. Alfred Nobel (Swedish chemist and the inventor of dynamite), launched a rocket with a working camera installed, in 1896. Nobel’s experiment marks the first time cameras were placed on an unmanned system. We have to consider each of these as great inventions and cutting edge technology of their age.
