Hello I'm a new teacher I'll start next week I was so afraid but ur video helped me a lot thank you so much I really appreciate it thank you merci beaucoup
Hi Chris! Even though I've been teaching ESL since 1986, I watched your video to the end. Nice tips on the board. In my lessons, I liked to conceal the board with pieces of paper, Students would file in, asking what was under them. This piqued students' interest, and they focused on the grammar (etc.) as soon as I removed the paper. I didn't start arranging desks until the latter part of my teaching career. Wish I had earlier! Now I like arranging them in a circle with me in the middle. No student can hide in the back and check his cell phone. Just before a group activity got going, groups of 3-4 desks were put together. Other helpful tips to new teachers might be: avoid hot button topics (religion, politics, marital status). I remember an angry reaction to a comment I made about bird-watching being boring (it was mentioned in our grammar book). An elder male student then gave some reasons to do it, and I apologized. I learned to keep my opinions to myself. And how about dress codes? A fellow teacher back in the day used to teach wearing a fanny pack and clothes he wore around his house on the weekend. Another would wear Hawaiian shirts. I feel a teacher should look like one. That doesn't mean a suit and tie, but it also doesn't mean wearing cut-offs and flip flops! After all, how are students going to know you're a teacher if you're dressed like a student? Anyways, nice video. Concise and to the point.
Your videos are so inspiring. I'm a new teacher and soon to begin. I just feel like I already started after watching a handful of your videos. Thanks s lot.
Thank you so much i know i will be watching all of your videos, i lived most of my life in the states and now i am taking a teaching class to learn how to teach english here in mexico, i already subcribed to your channel, thanks again for this helpfull videos
Today I got that I wanted, really it's my first visit on your channel, I am very happy and I have watched 3 to 5 continuously. Your knowledge and informations are truly helpful for me. Hey! One more thing I have clicked on subscribe button it's mean I am your new member 😊😊 so welcome me. Lot's of love from lndia and thank you so much to make such wonderful, knowledgeable, and helpful videos. 🙏🙏💐🤗❤️❤️
Lovely video. I'd like to pick your brain, if I may, about teaching older students or students used to giving orders (and not receiving them, like a manager) in a country where there is a clear "social ranking", as we do here in Japan. I do find myself sometimes in an awkward position, being ignored, especially by older men. Any ideas how I could avoid such a situation without being rude? Thanks so much for all your great ideas in these videos! Binging them over the holidays! Stay safe!
The biggest challenge is students ignoring you, not listening, and mostly just everyone talking. I cannot get their attention without raising my voice which I refuse to do anymore. I come prepared with good lessons but, kids today are not even interested in English or grammar. I am at a loss and disappointed that this video did not offer more. Can you please address the issue of how to effectively quiet your classroom down? Thank you
