From when I worked at Woolworths, I have a fairly small amount of shares (about $65k depending on the day's price). If I was going to work as a food/safety inspector, or sit on some sort of retail tribunal, or something like it, I'd feel the need to declare it on my job application and promise to dispose of the shares upon being hired. I only just heard about Crikey because of that lawsuit. I'm glad I got to hear the from someone who's actually in the same country as them so I could learn more about the company. Otherwise I'd only be hearing positive opinions. Unfortunately I think their strategy has already roped in a ton of Americans to support them and they'll be shaping the narrative however they like without any real pushback that reaches over here.

His mentions of Crikey did not seem blatantly self-serving to me at all - he regularly covers stories like these about companies that he doesn’t have a “small financial share in”.
Yup but let's be honest the reason you think it's unfair is because you like him and so you're filtering out huge portions of this video to defend him. If you watch the comparrison of his coverage of crikeys defo case to mine that we've already done it's blatantly obvious he's giving them a plug and telling people that I'm this opportunistic huckster not to be trusted

I didn’t “filter” anything out. I watched your whole video as I always do. I agree he treated you unfairly and I agree with all the stuff you said about Crikey. I just don’t think it’s clear that Barry was making any kind of a shameless plug. So he has $30,000 in shares - how much do the largest shareholders have? It was clear to me that Barry saying he has “a small amount of shares” was him declaring his conflict of interest while making it clear he wasn’t a major financial backer. Maybe I’m being too easy on him because I like him, or maybe you’re being too hard on him because you don’t like what he said about you. I don’t know.

Who cares what the largest share holders have? 150,000 dollars in shares in a single investment is a huge amount of money. I would love to have 150,000 dollar share portfolio all up! It really shows how much expendable income he has to even pretend that that's a small investment and yet he pretends that I'm loaded and that I'm grifting the public.
He used to work for crikey, he knows these people, he's been a journalist for decades, he knows all the journalists in the country, he frequently puts up articles of crikey without declaring that he has shares in them. Has for years and years. Every time he does that he's giving them a plug. There is no way he holds the press to account in fact I'm doing a video on how he doesn't. Oh yeah I hate what he said about me, reeeallly hate it, but I hated him before that. Media watch is a very sophisticated propaganda tool. It gives off the idea that it's holding the media to account so people think that its being held to account.

So Barry’s exact words were “…I have a small shareholding”. Now this is not my area of expertise, but rather than making a judgement about how much money constitutes a “small investment”, I think he’s saying he owns a small _percentage_ of the company’s total shareholdings. That’s why it matters how much the other shareholders have.
I personally have no issue with Paul Barry being well-off, just as I have no problem with you being well-off. I hope you now have a better car than the one in the video - you certainly deserve it.
I watch MW regularly and this is only the second time I recall him mentioning them, but if he did repeatedly mention them with no declaration or even with a declaration if they are not relevant to any major news story, then I agree this should be called out.
I’m interested to know what you mean by “holding the media to account”. Every week he reports on various news stories in the media, including the ABC, and points out serious errors in judgement or factual accuracy. Sometimes the vendors retract articles or issue apologies, sometimes they don’t. I don’t really expect much more than that.

Because he's trying to pass of his obvious bias via his shares in the company as it being nothing major. If you were handed $30,000 right now, would you be happy to put it in an investment on some unknown, barely living paper? I would certainly hope not. Even if it actually is $30k, that's still more than enough money for him to shill for the paper
I only just heard about Crikey because of that lawsuit. I'm glad I got to hear the from someone who's actually in the same country as them so I could learn more about the company. Otherwise I'd only be hearing positive opinions. Unfortunately I think their strategy has already roped in a ton of Americans to support them and they'll be shaping the narrative however they like without any real pushback that reaches over here.

Crikey! Knowing Mr Barry's association from well before he decided to (was promoted to) bring it up in context, I always felt a little like I might either vomit or burst out laughing every time he seemed to bring them up... Which was a little too frequent. Then again, everything about Creakey looks to me like a semi-literate exercise in cuttlefishing their unsuspecting audience. So glad someone decided to bring this up... Of course, who else would...
