Very good video only part I'd disagree with off the top of my head is with the CIA. They've done plenty to damage the US's position in global politics as well and I do not consider them a US intelligence agency. They seem to operate almost entirely independently and for their own profit over any other motivators.

The only frustration I have is how he glosses over that nuclear powered submarines are pretty much better than conventional subs in almost every way: longer range, faster top speed, greater submersion time, quieter operation, less emissions and larger size leading to better armament. Conventional subs are at odds with large sections of Western military doctrine, which is why they are being phased out in favor of nuclear.

I saw Jordan at a grocery store in Sydney yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the checkout was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Excuse me, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the checkout.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

We had a good deal going already that went though a thorough, years long procurement process - just is the same process with naval ships.
All military purchases of massive scale are supposed to go through such a process- that involves tendering and strategic long term planning with the military establishment.
Not a bunch of politicians shaking hands and signing papers! It seems all our military projects with the US are quick decisions that military advisors fought against - take the joint strike fight for example.

3:13 - CORRECTION (AND ITS A BIG ONE): we are actually spending up to $368 billion for AUKUS up to 2053. The AUKUS program (build and sustainment) still has another 40+ years to run. When you factor in inflation AUKUS is a ONE TRILLION DOLLAR PROGRAM (give or take a hundred billion).

thats not at all how that works we pay for it now and they build the subs which have a delivery date of 2053 the ship builders will just build them and then deliver
the delivery date has a lot of factors into it like that America has lost 90% of its shipyard capabilities since the end of the cold war
as for going over budget it may or it may not it depends how competent America will be these are existing class submarines they are not a prototype so they likely wont go over budget a lot of America's experimental naval programs like the Zumwalt class or its railgun program were shut down because they ran over budget or took so long to develop by the time they were ready they were already technologically out dated

    • @andrewmetcalfe9898
      @andrewmetcalfe9898 Рік тому

@@pleonexia4772 I’m sorry mate, but AUKUS is a pay as you go deal. So you pay for stuff when it arrives, or in the case of sustainment, when you do it at the value of dollars at that time. The value of money will be less at various AUKUS milestones than it is now; due to inflation. This is an 80 year program. The cost estimates for AUKUS are in ‘turned out’ dollars - ie, taking into account forecasts of inflation BUT only until 2053. That money only covers the acquisition cost and first phase of sustainment for the second hand Virginia class (some $58 billion in itself), a further three billion to the Americans to improve their rates of production to partly compensate them for the loss in their order of battle occasioned with handing over 3-5 subs to us, plus about 10 billion for the bases and hosting US and UK subs and training RAN personnel. The balance of that $258-368 billion estimate relates to the first half only of the SSN-AUKUS build program, and some sustainment of those vessels once they come into service between around 2043 and when the money runs out in 2053.
What is missing from all of that, is the missing money for the last phase of AUKUS - building the last 3-5 SSN AUKUS class subs, plus sustaining an 8 boat nuclear attack class fleet for another 36 to 50 years. This unspoken of cost will be paid on a ‘pay as you go’ basis and at the value of the money when bills fall due. Sustainment for a submarine in ‘constant dollars’ usually equates to 150% of the initial build cost, so on a ‘turned out basis’, the last phase of AUKUS will very likley cost between $450 and $700 billion, meaning the total turned out costs (2023 to 2090+) will be in a range of $700 billion to 1.1 trillion dollars.
The reason for the wide range of forecasts given (the government’s $258 to 368 billion estimate to 2053, or my total ‘cradle to grave’ (2023 to 2100) cost estimate of between $700 billion to over a trillion dollars) are so wide, has nothing to do with the very real risk of cost blowouts. That is a seperate risk altogether. The ranges simply reflect the ‘we don’t know’ factor associated with long range financial forecasts given the volatility of inflation. Right now inflation is spiking for the first time in 30 years. Economists dont know with precision when rates will abate down to that comfortable zone of 2-3% pa like we experienced for 30 years. This throws out long range forecasts significantly. Which is why the government cannot be more precise than ‘writhing 100 billion or so’ when talking about only the first 30 years of an 80+ year program.
If, costs do actually ‘blowout’ and given BAE Marine’s track record, I’d say that’s nearly certain, we could easily DOUBLE those forecasts that I’v discussed above. … something to think about, isnt it?

An important point on the comment regards getting 20 conventional subs vs 8 nukes: at present, Australia struggles to recruit enough crews for our 6 Collins class conventional subs. Turns out most people don't like spending months at a time crammed into a metal tube with around 60 other *sweaty* sailors and no beer. So running 20 of the things is right out.
Nuclear subs being bigger and having electricity to spare support luxuries like ice cream and Xbox, presumably we are banking on these being sufficient recruiting draws to make up the difference.

Im in engineering school and they basically offered to pay us a lot of money to sign on for nuclear subs for 4 years after college to run the reactors. The talk about all our previous prime ministers has just reminded me of learning about politics in primary school
I might be looking into it too much, but as part of our curriculum we were taught about the current prime ministers. It was all negatives, and we read the comics in newspapers about how terrible Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard are. They had 10-11 year olds walking around calling them Kevin Dudd and Julia Gizzard because we thought they were idiots.
Thankfully, my family doesn't give a shit about politics, so I was quickly told that idk what I'm talking about, preventing me from being brainwashed into thinking they were terrible. I was 10, I knew nothing and yet was being told to believe a certain idea. We learnt a little bit about John Howard, and guess what, all positives.
Like I said, I could be looking into it too much, but this sounds like straight up propaganda being taught in Australian schools to literal children who still thought the opposite gender was gross.

Most if not all of them were running due to the fact they had money to spend, not because of their poltical know how and skills.

I really appreciate Mr. Friendly, as an American, because he sticks to and advocates for the most pragmatic, most effective, and most well-proven *group of people within* the clearly superior party in his political landscape. Our democrats aren’t worthy to even be compared to Labor, but they’re the most realistic chance we’ve got to not collapse into dictatorship. Here in the US it’s a relentless tide of purity tests for the public and profound compromises on policy in private, which turns virtually everyone off from participating in the first place. So we need a voice like his to remind people that all change is incremental, and that there will never be a messiah in our politics (Kevin Rudd excepted, I guess). Anyway, we need an American Jordy, although they’d definitely be killed as soon as they got any real attention…
