The voice in the chorus is Roland's regular voice. The verses are sung in falsetto. Some other falsetto singers are Philip Bailey (Earth Wind & Fire), Frankie Valli, Prince, El DeBarge, Eddie Kendricks (The Temptations), Michael Jackson, Blue Magic, The Stylistics, Smokey Robinson, Black Ivory, The Delfonics, Ron Banks (The Dramatics), Wayne Cooper (Cameo), Bobby DeBarge (Switch), Maxwell, Jeffrey Daniel (Shalamar), Al Green. Falsetto is also common in 1950s doo wop songs and so is a low bass voice.
You want to really hear a falsetto? Check out the 60s group, The Newbeats, with their songs "Bread And Butter" or "Run Baby Run". @Brad & Lex, the Newbeats would be fun to see you react to.
HAHAHAHAHA!!! I never thought of that!! That’s awesome!! To put in better context, sound systems of the day were used in full advantage of the artist who knew certain sounds rocked especially in night club systems.
The Fine Young Cannibals also covered Elvis's Suspicious Mind , featuring backing vocals by Jimmy Somerville (Bronski Beat) or check Fine Young Cannibals - I'm Not The Man I Used To Be
Yeah his voice sounds very different when he sings "I'm Not The Man I Used To Be." Would like to see them hear the huge difference. He had an incredibal vocal range.
This came out in the heyday of MTV, when they played one music video after another, 24 hours a day, instead of nonstop "reality" shows. Music videos were EVERYTHING back then!
Made by the director of new order true faith. That’s another bat sh*t video. Recorded at Paisley Park, so Prince’s dna all over it. Sadly Roland’s style was very destructive to his vocal chords and their output became almost zero after the raw and the cooked LP
This band was amazing. Suspicious Minds (covering Elvis’ classic song arguably better than the King himself), Ever Fallen In Love, Johnny Come Home, Good Thing and I’m Not The Man I Used To Be are amazing songs.
People knock the '80's but we had some wonderful tunes like this one flooding the charts here in the UK. Roland Gift (Lead Singer) is still around. Brad & Lex, if you get a chance try 'Johnny Come On Home it has a different vibe but is also another one of Fine Young Cannibals big hits from back then.'
The way he sings this one is just for this song which makes it unique. It takes me to junior high 1990. They're from the u.k and you can't go wrong with them. My favorite track of theirs is "I'm not the man I used to be.." that's early 90s hip hop but u.k style. You'll love it.
I remember my parents listening to this song in Australia in 1980’s when I was 6 years old Sitting in the back of a station wagon/Ute. That’s the memory I have when I hear it.
This is one of my favourite songs from the 80's. It never gets old for me. As usual, great reaction Brad and Lex. Suspicious Minds cover by FYC should be next.
Lex...you are such a joy. The type of person I used to remember being when I was younger. I wish I knew you personally. Keep being yourself. We all love you!
Their Album "The Raw And The Cooked" was so good they released 7 singles from it. Please do their song "I'm Not the Man I Used to Be". It's their best one!
I love how rock can make room for voices as diverse as Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, David Byrne, and The Fine Young Cannibals. And no one even blinks. We just hear some weird, new, original voice, and everyone goes, 'Cool. New territory.'
@Stabis Hop - Agree, I don't get the hype for this song which is far from their best. And yes Johnny Come Home is my favourite too, followed by their cover of Suspicious MInds.
Love the song, it's got a happy sound to it. I feel like I have heard it in multiple movies, makes me think of walking on sunshine. I also find it funny that such a happy sounding song is done by a group with cannibal in the name lol, never knew their name before.
So glad you found FYC! Perfect for Lex! A good number of male singers use their Falsetto voice to great and unique advantage. One of the best examples was Frankie Valli, lead singer of the Four Seasons. Biggest hits early to mid 60s
I was watching MTV at my grandmas house with my cousins in early 1989. This video starts and my grandma stops by the family room to see what we were watching. Then the lead singer Ronald starts singing and my grandma starts laughing...such a big man with a little voice lol Listen to GOOD THINGS and my favorite...a cover of Suspicious Minds of Elvis.
Interesting that they're doing Ska-adjacent songs (Bananarama and the Go-Go's (Jane Weidland) connection to Fun Boy Three) and this (The Beat) yet they have yet to do a proper 2-Tone Ska band. They'll probably do General Public next and then we can expect some actual second generation Ska (Bad Manners, The Selector, The Specials, The Beat, Madness,...).
Roland Gift is the black, mixed race version of Axl Rose, huh? Lol. He's really a great singer, though. FYC were a fun pop rock, funk/R&B, Eurodance group back in the '80s and early '90s. Check out more of their videos "Don't Look Back", "Good Thing", "Suspicious Minds", "I'm Not Satisfied".

‘Johnny Come Home’ is great song by this band. I remember being in a maths lesson at school, the teacher was super strict and there was silence. Matthew McGuigan suddenly sang ‘Johnny, we’re sorry’ really loud. The teacher went ballistic, the class fell about laughing. I was 13 at the time.
The lead singer of this band played a really cool immortal villain in the HIGHLANDER TV series as XAVIER ST CLOUD. He hated DUNCAN so much in the series. Filmed in CANADA.
Lex, I love days like this. The last few videos, you're just having a blast. That is what 80's music was about...just have fun...love, live and be crazy.
Lex, you have such great energy and spirit. Life usually takes that out of us so it’s especially neat to see that you’ve survived with yours intact. Good for you, Lex! Juke on, Baby Girl!
One of my more surreal musical experiences was when I was standing in a Cracker Barrel restaurant, waiting to be seated and heard them start playing Dolly Parton's cover of this song. Never expected her to do a cover of this.
Fun fact: Roland Gift was hired as the vocalist as soon as he showed up to the audition, even before he could sing, because the other band members liked the way he looked. Luckily he was a good singer too.
Gotta own up on this one, came out when I was about 17. Heard this jam on the radio and for a second thought it was The Bee Gees, just the pitch of his voice.
A classic song from my childhood. Will always love this song! So much nostalgia and good vibes when I hear this! But no, this song is about a guy who is hopelessly lost in lust and love with someone, and he has no control over himself.

Nothing like hearing this come on the radio in the summer as a lil kid in the 80s!
They had their brief success in 1987 (I still have the full CD) and it was just like Lex's reaction, they were a fun vibe. Great top 40 radio hit song, great party song in the car, great Friday night house party song. Women particularly liked them, I remember that I bought the CD because my girl friend wanted it. Fun one!
Check out the band they were a spin off from 'The English Beat' their song 'Mirror In The Bathroom' is fantastic.
