This narrator just does not do it for me. But this author totally does. He thinks of the little things that make the unbelievable things feel real. Like when they are running through the castle Garin thinks about the fact that he may know the way inside his home but no one else does so he has to take that in to consideration. That’s a small detail that feels fantastically real and is often missing in amateur writing
