They didn't shed a light, they just tell a different story from the Disney classic. Maleficient wasn't an adoptive mother for Aurora in the animated movie and Cruella wasn't a stylist in the animated movie.

This is probably one of the best backstory of a villain i have ever seen just WOW, it's really good
She doesn't have two different souls, she's just repressed by society, but also has a wild gene from her mother. "Cruella" is just an attitude she adopts. And it's not a prequel, it's a reimagining.

if you really think about it, it is in a way a prequel with the two dalmation puppies pongo and perdita but mostly its telling how cruella came to be.
@@johnlerch7699 it really works better as a reimagining, the puppies were only there to connect it deeper to the original story but Disney has realised it makes a whole lot more money ‘heroifying’ their villains after the success of Maleficent even though it’s clear their intentions were nothing close to good. However, I must admit that this misunderstood version is far easier to translate into film and sells better under Disneys image so it would be more believable to get a prequel/origin story in book form like characters such as The Queen of Hearts (Heartless by Marissa Meyer) and the Evil Queen (Fairest of All by Serena Valentino).
Edit: In fact, Serena Valentino does have a book on Cruella De Vil (Evil Thing: A Tale of that Devil Woman) that is sold under the Disney Press and is probably more accurate when depicting Cruella’s original character and how it came to be.

It does dwell into Cruella's past but this is more like an alternative universe where cruella is chaotic good rather than a precap to 101 dalmatians.
Same. It doesn't throw off any cannon story and shows where she came from. I kind of wish they did the same for Maleficent. Maleficents movies weren't bad but they changed to much for the 2 to be the same person.
I watched this movie a couple… 17 times and it was just amazing 🤩

It's part of nature, however, the reason humans don't inbreed nearly as often, is because it's illegal. At the beginning of human history, people had to inbreed because that was the only way the human population could increase, and before you say it, I am against humans inbreeding.

I thought Cruella was an anti-hero in this but I realised she isn't. She is a real hero and the baroness deserved to get bad luck.

I think it is funny how a formula that worked so well for Maleficent, of giving her a backstory, humanizing her, and giving her motives to explain how she turned out so evil, fails so badly to do the same for Cruella.
Sure it give her a backstory, but at least to me she is still just as much the inhuman monster, if not more so.

Problem with this one especially is that it goes so far against the grain that its impossible to explain how you get from the ending of this movie and the beginning of the 101 Dalmation's movie. They should have just called it something else and released it as its own thing. It would still be bad, but it wouldn't be trying to rewrite history for a character who was perfect as she was.
to be fair killing puppys is like the one thing you cant justify ... i like to thing of the cruella from this movie as an alternate timeline character instead of the cruella we know from 101 dalmations

to be fair even if they are. incest isnt nearly as bad for animals as it is for humans .... you could probably inbreed dogs for years before you notice any effect (not to mention a single generation of incest wouldnt have any noticeable consequences for humans either)

In my opinion, when making maleficant disney broke the sleaping beuty story to make maleficent a hero ( king went from stupid to evil, fairies went from helpfull to morons - why would they even bless the baby of the guy who did those terrible staff the a fellow fairy and went to war with the forest anyway? ) and toned the evil tendences of maleficent down - the first bad think she does is cursing a baby but she spends the rest of the movie tring to reverse the curse.
In Cruella, they made a new story, added some dalmesians and made the devil wears prada - disney adition. And excluding the bio mother storyline, the movie doesnt pretend that its lead is a seant. She isnt all out evil, but not complitly good either. The crazy is there in the way the joker is crazy aka the fun crazy. At the end, she defiats the cartunishly evil character but still keeps the crazy within.
What I am saying is that for all its falltes, Cruella is a more fathfull adaptasion of the character cruella the maleficent was for maleficent. Sure Cruella doesnt skin puppies but maleficent basicly adopted Aurora in the remake. Which is more out of character?

Right? It's straight up weird to see Cruella with a completely different personality, I don't think they did a good job with making her past self... uhhhh... non-wacky? It's basically a different person and it doesn't quite fit with the image we were presented.
