Video is great, but very “beginner-centric” One thing would be a (subjective) comparison of the “feel” of the row and stroke? (Compared to concept2, water-rower, on water) Hydrow is shorter, Is the track length the same? (If you’re +6ft) Changing drag factor? Can you get it heavy enough for a good heavy sprint? Any speed difference in a 2k?
Look at the quality, it will break with any amount of use.notice the anchor point. On both the ski erg and paddle the thing is moving all over the place, the pump anchor point will break off. The same on the row erg look at the movement, a person with consistent power will break it off. The need to do a lot of testing, like a year to make sure it does not break. It is kick starter I would be carefully buying any on these products for long term use and repairs.
I bought a C2 and while on waiting list I found and downloaded and started rowing at my local Y with the Hydrow app. LOVE the app... so I row on a new C2 at home now with the app running on my iphone. Absolutely love the combo and the things that make sense for me - 1.)the BASIC membership for the app is only $20 per month instead of $38 2.) still get in on challenges and online groups and great pilates/movement mat work with olympian Peter Donohoe and others 3.) can separate the C2 and lean against the wall tucking away 4.) don't need the wifi of the Hydrow can run app off phone on wifi or data and don't need electricity. I did try a Hydrow at BBuy....maybe I am too much a newb only rowing for a year or so as it didn't seem a big diff in performance other than sound. 5.) love, love, love the coaching and virtual reality of the on the water rows and athletes - many olympians, champions. CONS: if you are super competitive the leader board can push you along mentally. Like a Peloton. With the BASIC app that is not in play. That is not my personality type to game it like that so I am okay. Also only one profile on the BASIC app....which works for me. And no "live" rows...but they do show up within a week or so to the app in an edited form. The app is free for a month....try it out you c2-ers.
I think the review was fair. I am wondering what you have to go through, should the hydrow break... the concept 2 seems easier to "fix" Also, if after a year, you decide not to pay the subscription, is it a paperweight? And there is really nothing stopping them from increasing that sub rate. Things to think about. Seems like a cool idea, and down below, someone remarked you can get the app on your phone .. that might make more sense. Thanks Shane, and thanks Shane's pregnant wifey. Stay well.
Man, these Hydrow folks are sure leveraging UA-cam reviews for a lot of their PR. I appreciate you giving a much more unbiased review than others I've seen! Still not going to switch from my Concept2 that subscription cost is a total deal breaker.
I stopped watching after five minutes. This is pathetic. You have to suffer through ads and then listen to an informercial from a paid representative of hydrow. I am sure that the Hydrow is a fine machine. But it’s probably not worth the double it costs and have to pay a monthly fee on top of it. There is NO monthly cost to a C2 and so that is a blatant misrepresentation suggesting they are doing an apples to apples comparison. When we can go back to gyms again you will mostly see C2 machines. So if you want to do relatively comparable workouts it makes sense to stick with the venerable Concept2. If you want to pay more than double, be my guest. Otherwise this is pure clickbait.
@@sotampacane I don't know if this was a paid sponsor video or not, maybe getting the machine to try (or own? Not sure.) for free for this review may be a conflict of interest? It's a weird gray area. The rower doesn't look awful and I get that some people want that high-end rowing experience and don't mind the cost at all... I'm not one of those people myself. I was on the wait list for my Concept 2 Model D ERG for 3 months (during Covid shortages) and I am super happy with it all around.
@@sotampacane I said it plainly to be 100% transparent as early as possible and you're acting as if it's some crazy money grab...they did not pay for this video. I was not compensated. I have an affiliate relationship which if you purchase the machine after clicking the link I would make a % that costs nothing more to the person who makes the purchase. The machine was given to me by Hydrow. If you didn't watch the video then you have no idea that I broke this down as simply and as close as I could get to apples to apples without them being copies of each other and removed any opinionated material about either machine.
Thanks Shane, but sticking with C2! Easy replacement parts and self service. Better storage and no electricity needed. Great for rowing outside when conditions allow. I can have a C2 AND a Ski ERG for the price of a Hydrow. Thanks
Had my C2 for over 10 years and it’s the best thing I have ever bought. I’m a PT and I take it in the back of my van on a regular basis so a Hydrow would not work for me here. In fact portability is a big factor for me as I mostly row on my deck in the garden. I can’t comment on the differences between how each rower feels as I’ve never tried the Hydrow. But to me, all the info I need is right there on my PM5. Numbers shown give me all the motivation I need. It’s so easy to set up and and use. I think for people that are exercise adverse, the Hydrow could be a good rower, but I love all aspects of exercise and use rowing to supplement my kettlebell lifting. The price and monthly subscription are also a bit turn off. The C2 is tried and tested and mine has given faultless performance over the 10 years of ownership.
Thanks Shane for the review, but in my opinion, the versatility of the C2 is unbeatable, not forgetting that the C2 staff supports you to use the machine for free, whether providing training or challenges, not forgetting the price!
Looks to be running on Linux so should be fairly reliable from a software point of view, but computer components do fail, especially motion sensors etc!
As a cyclist, this seems quite parallel to the peloton vs wahoo kickr comparison. People new to the sport and looking for things such as guided workouts, motivation, and general fitness will largely lean towards the hydrow/peloton, but the people who know what they’re doing will go for the concept2/kickr. Same goes for running, with Fitbit vs Garmin market. It is not apples to apple… 2 completely different markets with some overlap.
The manufacturers of HydRow should know this: We are rowing in front of our 75-inch 4K TV sets while working out with UA-cam's DarkHorseRowing shown through Google Chromecast. Just sayin'. 😝 😂
Haha, exactly. Same stream, I'm not sure I could shoulder it to the top of a mountain either, not to mention the power requirement once I got up there.
I’d be interested on the sound level of both machines from 10’ away. Measuring the decibels inches from the C2’s fan will definitely result in a louder noise reading.
We've had our C2 rower for 6 years now. When we bought it, the fact that you could still buy parts from the first models they made and the parts were reasonably priced is the reason we went with C2. In 6 years we haven't had to buy a single replacement part for a needed repair (we did upgrade to a pm5 monitor although our pm4 still worked fine) I've only had 1 single complaint with the C2 and that is the monitor not staying on long enough when doing intervals with other exercises. I'd row 500, hop off and do my box jumps, kb swings etc then have to bring up the monitor again when I got back on. Well talk about user error! I just found out within the last month that if you set up a distance interval, you can set the rest timer to "undefined" and when you hop back on you just hit the one button and go and the monitor stays on for 10 minutes. I'm kicking myself for not checking into all the settings when I got it!
Looks like I may be the first Hydrow user to weigh in here . I'm new to rowing and was looking to add a different type of workout to swimming laps and Peloton. With an aging spine I was a bit hesitant about rowing but it's been the best thing I've ever done for my back and have lost 20 # since I started rowing about 5 months ago. I looked carefully at both the Concept 2 and Hydrow , downloaded a bunch of Shane's videos and still subscribe to his newsletter. I think Dark Horse Rowing is a great service to the rowing community! In the end though I chose the Hydrow because I thought it would keep me more engaged rowing with instructors who were on the water with me. I didn't fully appreciate it at the time but each row provides valuable instructions on technique and form in real time. I liked the competitiveness of the leader board on the Peloton and the Hydrow is quite similar; it's what motivates me to row harder. The live rows are fun and cycle through different times during the week. As Shane says there are a bunch of different instructors and their styles and personalities differ which creates some further variety. The banked rows in the library really do feel like you are on the water with them and not at all "like a video game" as was mentioned in one of the comments. If you have a Peloton bike and enjoy that kind of a workout, the Hydrow really is quite similar except the metrics provided are for now more limited. Audio connectivity with bluetooth speakers ( Sonos and Airpod Pros) can also be a little buggy at times. I get that the price difference between the two machines and the monthly fee for Hydrow could be a significant deciding factor if the user experience on the Concept 2 is comparable. I appreciated the stats and comparisons (price, dimensions, noise level, foot pad, handle, monitor, connectivity, platform etc.) but the essence of the rowing experience seemed to be missing from both the review of the Hydrow and the Concept 2. Shane, maybe a follow up video addressing that would help others who are still on the fence decide which of these 2 great machines is best suited for them. For those who have already purchased a machine..... this really is not a pissing contest. It's a great community; we are all in this together. Let's respect our differences.
I completely agree Andrew! I would buy my Hydrow all over again, given the chance to choose again. I love how interactive it is - and really feel like it's helped me improve my on the water rowing as well. As I researched the 2 machines, I did hear someone say the Concept 2 is nearly indestructible and won't break down, but from what I have seen belonging to the Hydrow Facebook community - Hydrow has been awesome at replacing machines or seats if there is a problem. I also love all the challenges they offer - I am anxiously awaiting the T-shirt I won during the Commit to fit fall challenge! Off to check the mail! :)
Great video! I am getting my Hydrow tomorrow. I also know that they have an app for iphone as well. That may help link personalized workouts and other options. I will know more after today.
It feels like its Apple and PC but for rowing machines (Hydrow being Apple with a super integrated/closed system and Concept2 being PC with its more open system that allows customization especially tech and connectivity wise). Though I'm an Apple user for my tech, I'll stick with my Concept2 rower, more affordable, more flexible in terms how I use it and being able easily fix/get a sense of the mechanics (should I need to repair anything) is comforting. The Hydrow does look cool, and has interesting features though, just don't think it's for me. Thanks for the walkthrough Shane!
Separating out the specific parts and tools for each of the seven step assembly process steps was brilliant on the part of the manufacturer. For the price, I am impressed at how sturdy this ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxvObaTzoHoHQLL4lHbJQmExHqsrZQm-f7 unit is and it does go together easily. Well, I was puzzled at first at Step 5 and maybe the instructions should mention that rail #62 needs to be tilted upwards a little to get the rail to fit into the main part #44. I like it that the rower can be stored vertically in a really small amount of space, but be forewarned that this rower is top heavy and for safety you'll need at least two bungee cords to keep the unit upright, attaching them to something; in my case to a third garage door. I have had this unit only a short time, and I will post an update once I've had it for a year. As for working your legs, I have to admit that I'm mainly rowing for upper body strength and I use other forms of exercise for leg strength (like walking fast, biking, or using a trampoline. But if you pull as far forward as possible, then you can give preference to your legs for the first 4 feet or so of travel. I also admit to not taking the two electronic connectors apart at Step 7. I simply inserted the two batteries while the other parts remained connected. By the way, there is plenty of resistance here, even in the lowest resistance settings. Kudos to Sunny Health & Fitness !
Excellent review. I have rowed for 20 years on a Waterrower and it’s fine for me. My niece and her husband bought a Hydrow and they love it. Both are new to rowing and the Hydrow is keeping them enthusiastic about rowing. They are both competitive which probably draws them to the Hydrow.
Howdy! Hydrow owner here. As someone who's rowed on both, for me, the Hydrow is definitely worth the money if you can afford it. I feel like the rowing is a lot smoother, and having the scenery of the outdoor rows and coaches keeps me much more engaged than just trying to row on my own. I'm certainly willing to pay for the leaderboard, classes on demand, etc. on an on going basis rather than spend the $38 a month on something else., mainly because it helps me really enjoy the workouts. I can get a good workout in on a C2, but I get super bored and if I don't have "it" in me on a particular day, I likely won't push myself as hard. I can get killer workouts in on the Hydrow while still enjoying them and competing in real time with other athletes. But yes, if opting for the Hydrow over the C2 means you don't pay rent this month, definitely don't buy the Hydrow. Or if you are a world class rower who follows a really specific regimen, you probably don't need the Hydrow either. But if you're someone who wants a good way to stay in shape and be excited about your workouts (and can afford it), I think Hydrow is a great option.
I'll about to buy this today.. im really looking for more of a flow state/meditative experience. Is there a first person view program where i can just hear nature and the sound of the water and have the visuals reflect as if im actually rowing rather than watch someone else?
@@brianbgood Yes, that's one of my favorite parts! They call it Journeys, and it'll be either bow or stern views of some pretty cool locations. Just the sounds of the waves and wind.
@@justheretochimein so great! Is there any way you could post a video of this mode? I havent been able to find one. Also, do you find the rowing noise reducing immersion? I am sorta finding myself withing this was a water rower. Do you think the Hydrorow's sound is distracting?
@@brianbgood what's your email? I can send you a video of it. As for the noise, during a guided workout with music, I don't notice the noise (compared to a C2 where I need to turn my headphones way louder when I row). During a journey, you would probably notice it at first and then get used to it, but it is definitely audible. It's a fairly innocuous humming sound. For whatever reason, whenever I see UA-cam videos of the sound, it doesn't replicate well over the computer, not sure if it's a recording thing or speakers, but it never really sounds like what the machine actually sounds like. Compared to a water rower, it's definitely quieter, but I could see how some people would like the sound of the water rower.
We use Concept 2 in the local gym, they’re robust, feel great to use and easy to fix - they have all the replacement parts available for very reasonable cost. And the Concept 2 Skierg - try that it’s a great workout! Not sure about fixing the Hydrow, bet they’re not so open with spares. And when that screen dies, that’s it. With the C2 it’ll work fine without the monitor anyway if you don’t want to miss a workout. And the monitor is battery powered so portable - take it outside, rowing outside is soooo cool! (It tips up on wheels so easy to move around). I haven’t tried them, but if you’ve got lots of room you can get C2 slides - which makes you and the whole machine move like you’re on the water! Finally, C2 are great at supporting old machines they don’t make any more. So your investment will keep running for decades 😎
So many reviews on UA-cam tend to sway you to buy an affiliate product. This review was truly a review and I really appreciate that. Thank you! I'm a concept2 owner for going on 20 years so it would take alot for me to stray(yes I still use the same 20 year old rower and it works as well as the day I bought it), but it's always interesting to see the other options out there. I'm wondering about the durability of the nylon strap, I would imagine over years of use, the nylon strap would need to be replaced.
Consept2 is where its at. Very well established brand, little electronics, non-membership and you get two for the price of one of the Hydrows. Cant really see any reason to deviate from the Concept2.
1 yr Hydrow owner here. I suspect a majority of your subs/viewers are hardcore C2 users and rowers and the Hydrow is just not for them. For me, I found your channel to learn about improving my row technique. I found the integrated "ecosystem" of the Hydrow easy for a newb like me to jump on the machine, pick a warm-up and a work-out, and get after meters after a long day at work. I may be a little biased since the Charles River is nearby. I've used the C2 for various HIIT classes and I can see why there is a dedicated following as evidenced by many of the comments below.
@Marcus M Yes! The lifetime meter tracking keeps me motivated to keep getting the meters, and the leaderboard in each row gives me something to strive for.
@@mariarossifitness9475 I haven't need the occasion to use their customer service since initial startup ~ 2 yrs. ago. when i did need to contact them about some startup questions, they were prompt to answer my questions.
Pretty sure you got a special delivery service with the Hydrow. Mine was dumped outside and they didn’t even bother to ring the doorbell to let me know it was sitting outside. Getting it inside the house by myself was quite a chore.
From what I understand I didn't get anything special, and I actually declined a "special onboarding" so it wouldn't sway my opinion of the experience. But it sounds like the third part delivery company did a REALLY bad job for you.
Enjoyed the review. Recently bought a rower, actually considered the Hydro. A couple of things put me off. The price difference I could have lived with, but the almost $ 500 a year fee was a big negative. The weight was also a problem. In the final analysis I doubt the actual hydro mechanics are superior to the C2 . So for a lot less I can buy an iPad and iPad holder and find plenty of entertainment for my workout. The C2 has certainly stood the test of time and I’m sure my C2 will survive longer than I will. Not so sure about the Hydro.
i bought a sunny health and fitness rower for 150$. i have a lap top my mom gave me. and i row along with your work outs for free . i cant track anything but reps acutely . but i gained 10 lb of muscle and feel so good .
Hi Shane great review! I’d make one comment about how C2 generates resistance. The flywheel is design as a centrifugal pump. It just so happens it pumps air, a low density liquid. Opening the damper allows more air into the eye of the impeller and the rotation throws the air to the edge of the flywheel and creates the wind you feel.. More air in per stroke equals more mass moved equal more watts required. The acceleration changes by the power (watts) consumed by the volume of air moving through the system This is translated to Drag Factor, which equates to boat speed
Great review. I couldn't justify paying a monthly subscription along with the high price of the Hydrow. The Concept 2 tethered to a wide choice of Apps works for me, ErgZone and ErgData are great for logging, and there are plenty of rowalong videos on YT to workout to, such as your channel and many others. I also noticed the refresh rate of the touch screen when you was scrolling the Hydrow was very laggy. For such a high price tag I would expect a better interactive display experience. It feels a bit gimmicky to be to be honest. If price wasn't an issue I think I would still go with a water rower but the C2 is still gold standard at an affordable price for me as a noob.
I have a 350$ magnetic rower at home (Viavito) and I use a Concept2 at the gym while everyone else queues for the Technogym Skillrow. IMHO, the “electronics” are a diversion for the weaknesses of the machine. My favorite among the 3 above is the Concept2: I’m heavy-ish (118kg) the limit on my home machine is 120kg, the Concept doesn’t bat an eyelid when I use it. You can feel that I’ll be in a box well before the Concept2. On the software: I think a subscription close to what I pay for the gym (which has to pay rent, building and swimming pool maintenance, staff etc) cannot be justified for software animations or videos broadcasted to hundreds of not thousands of users. I would have made an exception for Kinomap, because they work with any machine and use the phone camera to evaluate your stroke cadence, it’s pretty neat. However from one day to the next, the “free” version was discontinued under the excuse that Apple and Google Play don’t allow free versions of software on the AppStore (which can only be bollocks) so I removed them from my wish list.
I luckily happened upon a gently used Concept2 and love it. I'm new to rowing so your videos have been very helpful. I also discovered how to connect my erg to Zwift, where I already bike and run. They say Zwift rowing is coming soon. It seems w/ the Erg & BT capability, including ErgData, w/ the PM5, there are many possibilities for logging, joining challenges, and keeping it fun while staying connected with others via various apps!
With the C2 you can setup and run your own workouts any way you want whereas with the other machine you have to select whatever they have chosen for you....
Great video. Thank you. Just about to order and I'll make sure to use that link. I believe the just row feature is the only thing you can do with out the subscription
Have owned C2 for years, RowErg, BikeErg, SkiErg. Unbeatable machines. I was a cyclist and a rower before owning these so I knew what I wanted in workouts, more directed by me. I see Hydrow machine more focused on user segment that is looking for guidance, prompting, engagement. Concept2 Challenges are inspirational in size, content, motivation!
Zwift is apparently adding Rowing in the near future which would definitely be a game changer for Concept2 since the BikeErg PM5 already works in Zwift for interactive cycling workouts, racing, group rides, etc. I have to assume if this happens that Concept2 will be there day 1 with its market share with the rowing community. You can hook a rower PM5 to an iPad or iPhone apps today and covert the rower watts to bike watts which is fun. Adding actual rowing avatars would really give Concept2 a big advantage for people looking for live competition which is its biggest weakness. Hydrow definitely has its place as I equate it more to what Peloton does which is a live spin/rowing class with some competition. I competed against a lot of the coaches on Hydrow and happy its becoming successful. It's just a different target audience than Concept2 users in my opinion much like Zwift/Trainer Road and other Virtual bike applications attract different user bases than a very good, successful Peloton product
I've had a Concept 2 a little over a year, I'm still in love with it, and can't imagine switching. The Hydrow tech is kind of cool, but I didn't see anything that would entice me to give up my Model D, even if the Hydrow was the same price or even a little cheaper. I'm an engineer and engineers are big believers in KISS (keep it simple stupid). Concept 2 has figured out how to keep it as simple as possible and keep it reliable, with a machine that engineers love. How long will it take for Hydrow to develop a similar reputation? In the meantime, I'll keep chugging along on my Model D!
YOU HAVE LOST YOUR MIND OR YOU ARE JUST A FAN BOY....ANYBODY IN THEIR RIGHT MIND KNOW THE CONCEPT 2 IS OUT DATED LIKE 4 YEARS AGO..YOU PEOPLE KILL ME WITH OH IM A ENGINEER BULL SHIT AS IF YOUR WORD CARRIES A TON OF WEIGHT JUST BY DROPPING YOUR OCCUPATION WTF? T TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THE CONCEPT 2 BEING THE BETTER BANG FOR THE BUCK.... THE CONCEPT 2 IS OUT DATED JUST FACTS.. PEOPLE HOLD ON TO WHAT THE MASSES SAY AND NOT ACUTUALLY LOOKING AT WHAT THEY ARE GETTING AT A PREMIUM PRICE....I CAN NAME SOME THINGS ABOUT THE CONCEPT 2 THAT IS OUTDATED THAT YOU THINK ABOUT BUT OVER LOOK... 1. PM5 MONITOR IT NEEDS TO BE BIGGER AND WIFI CAPABLE FACTS AND A WAY TO HARVEST YOUR DATA ONLINE/OFFLINE AT THE PRICE THEY ARE ASKING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE 4 YEARS AGO....YOU DONT NEED OTHER EQUIPMENT TO DO WHAT THE PM5 SHOULD BE DOING OUT THE BOX JUST FACTS ALSO BEING ABLE TO BE PUT HEART RATES TO THE PM5 2. MOST PEOPLE WILL SAY HEY IT WILL LAST A LONG TIME UH IS THAT IT? NOT FOR THE PRICE YOUR PAYING HELL NO ITS 3 OPTIONS OF ROWERS THAT WILL EASILY KNOCK OFF THE CONCEPT 2 ROWER...ALSO, UNDERSTAND ITS A REASON WHEY THE COMPANY CROSSFIT USES THE PRODUCT ITS CALLED PROFIT
@@bull5919 Suggest you consider decaf starting with the 3rd cup of the day. Seriously, here we are over a year since my original comment and still C2 still seems to be the rower of choice.
Use a concept 2 with your ipad - save a grand. Well probably more as there are plenty of concepts which work fine 20 years later. Not saying the hydrow is bad but the concept 2 is like a Porsche - great initial first design then refined over decades, and massive aftermarket for spare parts - you buy one for life. I'm pretty sure concept 2 could come up with an app pretty easily and solve what they are missing on the screen - they are not missing anything mechanically.
I'd like to have a transcript of the telephone calls between Hydro marketing and Dark Horse...but, having seen the entirety of the vid, I have to say it is a thorough, earnest and balanced review across a variety of dimensions.
I would prefer a machine like the high tech stationary bikes and treadmills at gyms. You could select different work outs such as a fixed resistance to interval training. Maybe a club race event to compete against other members or maybe even a computer generated rower for pacing. World tours to explore different regions of the world. Also classes that could be real-time or join when convenient. You could have monthly fees for personal training or real-time classes, but also free access to standard functions listed previously. I actually like the large screen, but the monthly fees, turns me off to the hydros.
Think twice before you buy a Hydrow. The forced subscription ruins the experience. Can't row without internet. Won't store stats without subscription. I regret getting the Hydrow.
Excellent, fair review. It wouldn't be for me, main reason the initial price and more importantly the ongoing monthly fee. My Concept2 is still going strong 10+ years later and suspect it will be in another 10. Paid once and that was it. I can see the Hydrow appealing to the Pelton type of user and it has some neat features. Seemed to remind me a bit of the old story about the space race and the Americans (Hydrow) spending fortunes trying to make a pen that would work in space. The Russians (Concept2) just took a pencil. Basic but reliable and still did a perfectly good job ;-)
Thank you Shane for doing a fair review of these two machines. Before you even said, I thought the Hydrow looks to be the Peloton for the rowing community. Maybe, if I was new to rowing I might consider it, but as with Pelton, if I was going to spend that kind of money, I would likely go with a good quality road bike, a turbo and Zwift, which would give me a lot of the functionality of a Peloton, plus the ability to go outdoors and also to use my bike to commute too! In other words, in the long run, I feel it would be better overall value and practicality, as well as not being tied into one supplier or group. I believe the same applies to the Concept2, that is it does what you need it to and offers you more if you want it. Though, it will still work well on its own in your home. While not having as much tech up front as the Hydrow, it is less likely to become obsolete. In my case, I have own my C2 D for 12 years. It has 6 million meters on it and is nearly in the same condition when I unpacked and assembled it, on the day that it was delivered. Since I have owned it, beyond performing the minimum required maintenance on it, as specified in the owner’s manual, the only money that I have spent on it was to upgrade (it was not required or needed, I just wanted the Bluetooth) its monitor to the PM5 ($150)and just recently to replace the flywheel sensor and the shock cord, which is what pulls the handle back at the of the stroke, in all about $37. As for everything else, the Erg app and the online the online log book, I concur with your assessment. I would add too that C2 has a large and active community of rowers, groups and clubs that cater to those looking to train and to complete with others, or, looking for social engagement. Concept2 also hosts a number of challenges throughout the year, for those of us that are looking for more engagement and a chance to measure themselves against their cohorts. In the end, it would seem that both machines work well and will help you get the desired results, if you are ready to put in the work. If you are new to rowing and training and like, or, need the experience of being in a group or class like environment the Hydrow is likely the machine for you, just as Peloton bike would be for a non bike rider, or, the spin class participant. The C2 will more than likely be the device for the serious on the water rower, or, athletes that is comfortable and capable of training on their own and is able to self motivate.
The Hydrow indeed looks sweet. Thanks for the review! I'm pretty sure its Just Row function is currently limited to 2 choices: 1) Kill your WiFi so it's in disconnected mode, and then some very limited, no plan, no data-retrievable, no anything, just work until you're bored is available. or 2) Install a sign with a "Just Row" arrow pointed to your Concept 2.
The Hydrow looks dope as hell, but there’s a reason why the Concept2 is called the “gold standard” of rowing machines. So I think I’ll stick with the latter 😎
Really surprised how little discussion there is here about, you know....the actual, physical rowing experience on the Hydrow vs Concept2. Does the catch feel any different? You can adjust drag factor on the Hydrow, so what did you notice about that aspect? Does the resistance feel any different through the stroke on the Hydrow given that it’s an electromagnet (I assume) and not a fan/damper based system? You’re also really well qualified to speak to the actual quality and content of the workouts from a coaching perspective but you hardly mentioned it.
Will, I wanted to make the first video an apples to apples comparison. There will be more based on an actual opinion but this was simply to kick things off from the basics.
You have to commend Hydrow for having the courage (& vision) to look at the C2 and imagine what might be. That said, it would seem easier for C2 to bolt on LED touch-screens and videos in years to come, than for Hydrow to establish a comparable reputation for utility and reliability....not to mention the Olympic rower street (water) cred.
It’s tough, C2 has shown they aren’t very interested in tech, just making good hardware. They’re mechanical engineers at heart and that kind of progress just doesn’t interest them up to this point. We’ll see if these competitors change their minds.
Hey Shane, I find the techy side of the Hydrow is pretty awesome! Definitely something I'd love to try for what I believe would be a neat experience. On the down side, I think these may be more appealing in a gym rather than a home-gym for personal use, nonetheless, really cool concept no pun intended.
Great review, for me who's new to rowing I chose the C2 (I didn't know about the hydrow before now to be honest) quite simply as I see it as robust in build and also flexible in apps, seeing the hydrow now it appears to be possibly for the more casual market? Like the Peloton and Echelon to me they (I have an Echelon and its great) seem similar in concept and function, they can both work(C2 and Hydrow) I think but probably very different markets. Also is the C2 getting Zwift row?
Hydrow is tough to move around (weight, size, electrical plug required), so you have to decide where it goes and never move it. Also, can't lend it out easily, so others can try it... Was fun for the challenges and visuals, but I wanted the workouts, repeatability and flexibility of location, storage and space. That monthly fee is a killer too! Thanks for the comparison-
Concept 2 has a lot less parts to breakdown. As an IT person, the only thing I can guarantee is that the electronics in the Hydrow will die at some point. And you can't row in a power outage.
When, not if the Grid goes down or when the next pandemic hits I can still use my C2 and keep my sanity. What little there is of it. Noise Is not an issue for me. Its alot louder on the water.
G'day Shane - chiming in from Victoria, Australia. Hydrow looks cool. Teched-up to the hilt, and all, but... I've had my Concept since 1998 and she still goes as good now as when purchased. That's almost a quarter century of service without fail, which I feel would be a hell of a stretch from the Hydrow. Also, there's just something about the old Concept that allows me row for the sake of rowing's sake: the Concept ain't Super Model pretty or pretend to be a cool kid from Silicon Valley, but it doesn't need to be and, frankly, I wouldn't want it any other way.
I think a lot of people are going to fall in to your camp Barry but also keep in mind their target audience isn't "rowers" it's to reach people who are interested in trying it for the first time in which this kind of machine will appeal to the current flavor for hardware.
My only negative feedback on the Hydrow is that the instructors always have to talk about themselves during the workouts. They never really focus on the technique Instead or workout. Quite annoying. I’ve gotten to the point where i just turn them off and do my own row.
I’ve had my C2 Model D since late 2020 and it has nearly 1mil meters on it at this point. It cost me $900 + tax and shipping… and that’s still my total cost of ownership over 3 years later. To each his/her own in terms of what rower works for you… but the ‘pay as you go’ (year after year) subscription model is definitely not for me. I can put those extra $$ to better use.
Review a Coffey. I would think that because they are dynamic, sweep or sculling, and use a PM5, you could get a lot of benefit for actual rowing from training on one. Also review the RP3 app.
So, you should probably preface your cost as the number you gave for the first year, and then adjust it to subtract the purchase cost after the 1st year
In my opinion, stay away from Nordictrack! It used to be a great company, but then was acquired by "fitness" giant Icon industries. Known for TERRIBLE customer service!!!
Curious if you’ve tried any of the other ‘smart’ rowers out now from echelon, city row, or Aviron? They promise similar experience to Hydrow at a lower price. Skeptical of most, but echelon also has a Peleton bike setup that makes me curious about being able to integrate multiple pieces of equipment through one app. I’d also note right now the C2 is running $1,300-1,400 dollars from indirect sellers if someone is looking to jump the wait list.
TBH it was a little unfair to measure noise so close to the air resistance unit ... the noise level is more relevant away from the machine, ie. how much will the neighborhood be annoyed. Notice that the whine of the magnetic resistance and nylon strap is probably less loud but more annoying than the sound of the wind.
I don't see the hyrow as aimed at the general fitness market. A lot of people row on an intervals basis while lifting. My C2 lives in two pieces in my power rack until I put it together to use it. I can do an interval, jump off and wheel it out of the way, do pushups or bench, woodchoppers, chin ups, whatever, wheel it back into position, jump back on, repeat. I am sure I could do the same thing on the Hydrow but why? That monitor is just added fragility for no purpose for that kind of workout, even if the user experience with the resistance feels as good.
You could buy the concept 2 rower and the Concept 2 bike erg for the same price as the Hydro rower. I own both by the way. The Bike erg is the best stationary bike I have ever rode. I have been going to gyms for 40yrs and tried many. The concept 2 rower is far superior to this hydro rower. You do not want a pc driven rower. The computer components fail and then guess what? You have nothing. The concept 2 rower is light, moveable, and is proven by years. The Concept 2 machines are made so well that you could literally leave them to your kids. I want the ski erg but I need to try it first as my shoulder has an issue and I can not agravate it. The Concept2 is probably one of the last few company's that make good stuff still.
I have never heard that Concept 2 does not recommend storing vertical. Why is that ? Would like to know cause that is how I store mine. Hope I’m not hurting it.
As I mentioned, I've ALWAYS stored mine vertically as well as every boathouse, rowing club, CF gym etc , but C2 recommends breaking them down. I think it's more for the tip factor I guess? I think it's probably a, for their liability they need to say it situation.
I'm assuming liability reasons especially if you have small children who like to climb? Remember Peleton treadmill and small children playing on the machine? It made national news and law suits.
We are just old fashioned C2 users. In terms of user community, C2 is second to none. Pretty much all crew clubs using it, so that pretty tells the difference.
so basically this is a comparison of the first ironman suit when he was in the cave vs the one in avengers infinity war? both can get the job done but there can only be ONE like in the highlander movie?? am i correct?....:-). honestly i'm torn between two. i'm in the market to complete my home gym with a rower but still deciding.
concept 2 is the machine they use for the CRASH Bs only and i believe they use the concept 2 for most major indoor rowin events so shouldin everything be measured by the concept 2
I don't understand why the subscription cost so much ($38/mo) when you already purchased the hydrow machine, and the app subscription for people who doesn't own a hydrow machine is $20/mo... if the subscrption is a it cheaper, or the same price, purchasing the machine will be worth it. But i am hesitating because of the pricey subscription...
Exactly. If they want to make money from subscription, they should lower the price of the hydrow machine. If they charge higher price for the hydrow, they should lower the subscription cost. They cannot charge higher price for machine and the subscription. Not a good way to do business.
@@snowwny I actually bought the machine for me, my brother and my mom. But I am regretting it right now, $38/mo and the screen doesn’t even load properly/ smoothly. Sometimes it glitches and takes forever to update. Had to turn on and off multiple times for it to work… don’t know if I got the faulty one or what.
@@ALi-wv1er Thanks for sharing. I narrowed down my research to Concept2 and Hydrow, and was leaning toward Concept2. Your experience further help me made the decision to go with Concept2. What I like about Concept2 is that it is time tested and can last very long time. Imaging using Hydrow for 10 years and pay $480 a year. That's a lot of money. The only thing missing in Concept2 now is there is no rowing apps, but I think it will be improved in the future. There is a youtube video on pairing Concept2 with the Zwift app, although it shows cycling scene instead of rowing. Giving that more and more people realizing rowing is one of the best total body workout available, I think Zwift will add rowing support pretty soon.
Great review but please consider the international audience that use the metric system vs imperial :-) I think the C2 is the winner hands down but Hydrow brings some interesting features. Shame the range of choices is quite limited for rowers
Wondering if Tech would be my choice for Hydrow. I think it is more of a Glam. Also funny to see this video after yesterday's discussion. #C2powerzones :)
My C2 is way quieter than my electric lawn mower. Not even close. I watch indoor rowing videos on UA-cam while I row, and have no trouble hearing the guy rowing his scull on a lake in Austria. No music.
Does pairing Concept2 rower with some apps or video classes give similar experience as hydrow? I am leaning toward the Concept2, but I need something to get motivated.
Hi! Is it really true that there are no programmable workouts with the hydrow? I couldn’t believe it when I first heard that. I’m excited if it gets more people into erging
@@DarkHorseRowing thanks alot Shane for Your very quick answer..and excuse my english..but i am german..im 60 years old ..and my PB time is about 8:30 ..per 2000 m ... best regards Wolfgang
Concept 2 is the best, but i hate the noise that make, sounds like you trying to start a combat jet engine,i guess is done in purpose to make you angry in every stroke.
Concept 2 all day long. Built like a tank / time tested, monitor is open source for apps, used for world records, weighs less so it's portable, and no subscription. If you look at the cost of ownership over 5 years - Concept 2: $1021.50 vs Hydrow: $2168.92 + (60 months x $38 = $2280) = $4,448.92 Not to mention gambling on the maintenance costs... I don't see any guarantees for meters rowed nor how long the monitor will last on Hydrow. Also... if you stop paying $38 a month you no longer have a functional rower? I can't support that business model, nor should you. Over that 5 year span I could outfit an entire home gym with a squat rack, plates, dumbbells, etc. for the price difference ($3,427.42) and still have money left over.
I hope and pray the reviews are accurate for quality, which I fully expect they will be. However, be aware/advised, as a recent cash purchaser that took advantage of the Black Friday sale, was disappointed to learn the day after and a few days after, they added over $300+ in extra equipment for the same purchase. This is great for those who procrastinated, but for me; customer service and sales should have made one aware. I guess I remember the old days of brick and mortar store integrity. It squarely falls on me and I look forward to the workouts and use [and hopefully weight-loss and conditioning] and I hope it gives me years of good service as I am now concerned Customer Service is just a 'refusal' department...I'll update on the equipment but honestly believe it will be great! What's a few pieces of equipment anyway?
Aside for all of the peloton style points would have appreciated more of feel and feedback. The difference between magnetic rowers to air rowers. I’m new to your channel because I purchased a sunny fitness rower model rw5854. Can you do a comparison of a Sunny Fitness magnetic rower compared to a concept 2. Can you get a great workout from a cheaper rower.
Which camp do you sway towards? What things did I miss in the review?
Video is great, but very “beginner-centric”
One thing would be a (subjective) comparison of the “feel” of the row and stroke? (Compared to concept2, water-rower, on water)
Hydrow is shorter, Is the track length the same? (If you’re +6ft)
Changing drag factor?
@Pascal André Hosch Is there an [preferred] app that can be used on an iPad type device that replicates the Hydrow experience?
They definitely see the value with us! I wouldn't steer you guys wrong.
At the start he said he was compensated by Hydrow. I’m not going to listen again but I wouldn’t have written that if he didn’t say it.
Totally respectable
Looks like a good, but the C2 it is like an old tractor that will run for years. As a tech I do question when there a lot of tech involved.
Of course! You hit the nail on the head as probably the primary question for many.
Looks to be running on Linux so should be fairly reliable from a software point of view, but computer components do fail, especially motion sensors etc!
Roy C Well at least they went with more solid option of Linux. Nothing to do but sit and wait for time to tell how this machines will handle :)
I’ve actually taken my C2 on trips. Benefits of a pickup. Don’t think I’d be able to do that with a Hydrow.
I was looking for a comparison of noise. Your video gives by far the most informative and fair comparison. Thank you!!!
I have a water rower at home. Would love to see a comparison of this and the concept 2
Great video! I am getting my Hydrow tomorrow. I also know that they have an app for iphone as well. That may help link personalized workouts and other options. I will know more after today.
Any update on your experience?
I love it, I have been on a rower most of my life due to particular injuries so this fit me like a glove!
@@stevennorris7517has this held up over the years?
It feels like its Apple and PC but for rowing machines (Hydrow being Apple with a super integrated/closed system and Concept2 being PC with its more open system that allows customization especially tech and connectivity wise). Though I'm an Apple user for my tech, I'll stick with my Concept2 rower, more affordable, more flexible in terms how I use it and being able easily fix/get a sense of the mechanics (should I need to repair anything) is comforting. The Hydrow does look cool, and has interesting features though, just don't think it's for me. Thanks for the walkthrough Shane!
Happily! I like your breakdown too.
After reading this going to buy the Hydrow
Hi! How is Hydrow Customer service?
@@mariarossifitness9475 I haven't need the occasion to use their customer service since initial startup ~ 2 yrs. ago. when i did need to contact them about some startup questions, they were prompt to answer my questions.
@@mershanks Any update? Did you like it?
@Marcus M Hey man. Also an avid Peloton user here. Did you end up liking the Hydrow?

Could you source the iPad holder?
i bought a sunny health and fitness rower for 150$. i have a lap top my mom gave me. and i row along with your work outs for free . i cant track anything but reps acutely . but i gained 10 lb of muscle and feel so good .
I'll stick to the Concept 2 for now! Thanks for the comparison Shane!
C2 all day baby. It's like investing in a solid set of tools. Simple and a tank of a machine.
Definitely interesting thoughts here.
You don’t *have* to get a crew membership but you will be glad that you did! I joined a month ago and am glad for the community and guidance!
I ended up getting the Hydro. I live in an apartment and the noise factor was the main reason. IT'S QUIET! Thanks so much!
Glad I could help!
One of the reasons I went with Concept2 other than price and community is because I can add slides once I fine tune my technique.
Can the Hydrow still be used during a power failure?
No it cannot. Reference the Hydrow FAQs on their website
Where do you live that you are concerned with this?
@@runawaytechgal1467 In the country, with frequent power outages. If I can't watch UA-cam, well, I just row my C2.
@@RockwoodJoe ah, I see. That would definitely be a problem to have an electric machine then.
Buying a Concept 2 model D rowing machine soon.
With the C2 you can setup and run your own workouts any way you want whereas with the other machine you have to select whatever they have chosen for you....
Great video. Thank you. Just about to order and I'll make sure to use that link. I believe the just row feature is the only thing you can do with out the subscription
Thank you so much for that, very good review. I was planning on buying the concept too, and your review solidified that intention.
1. PM5 MONITOR IT NEEDS TO BE BIGGER AND WIFI CAPABLE FACTS AND A WAY TO HARVEST YOUR DATA ONLINE/OFFLINE AT THE PRICE THEY ARE ASKING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE 4 YEARS AGO....YOU DONT NEED OTHER EQUIPMENT TO DO WHAT THE PM5 SHOULD BE DOING OUT THE BOX JUST FACTS ALSO BEING ABLE TO BE PUT HEART RATES TO THE PM5
What class/videos do you use with your concept 2 on your iPad?
Found you from Training Tall and love the content! I think I did right going with the Concept2 but definitely looking for some good beginner programs.
Think twice before you buy a Hydrow. The forced subscription ruins the experience. Can't row without internet. Won't store stats without subscription. I regret getting the Hydrow.
Thanks for your honesty about your purchase. 👍👍
Thanks again I needed that comparison. I also need interaction to get into a workout... before I buy the hydro I will check out the crew.
You know pencil was banned from space flight because graphite can create short circuits and make a space craft explode, so the Russian used ink also
Thank you Shane for doing a fair review of these two machines.
I'm pretty sure its Just Row function is currently limited to 2 choices:
1) Kill your WiFi so it's in disconnected mode, and then some very limited, no plan, no data-retrievable, no anything, just work until you're bored is available.
or
2) Install a sign with a "Just Row" arrow pointed to your Concept 2.
Dark Horse Rowing Awesome! Glad to hear it. Sorry if I missed that; didn’t realize there’d be a Part 2
I have a feeling that my C2 will be running long after that tech receives support.
BTW, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Hydrow also allows us C2 users to pay to stream their apps thru an ipad.
No I think you're right on that. I think you can pay for the app. Unsure about the connectivity to the machine thought.
Thanks for the comparison-
Worth noting that sound measurement is exponential. 🤓📈
I like the sound though
I can put those extra $$ to better use.
i just bought a hydrow :-)
Have you received your unit? Thoughts?
found it ,,,,,The Just row can be found under the link Journey....
Review a Coffey. I would think that because they are dynamic, sweep or sculling, and use a PM5, you could get a lot of benefit for actual rowing from training on one. Also review the RP3 app.
So, you should probably preface your cost as the number you gave for the first year, and then adjust it to subtract the purchase cost after the 1st year
Free shipping when I bought my Concept 2 in August 2020.
C2 noise level nowhere near that of a lawnmower, unless you mean an electric lawnmower.
Do you have a video on Nordictrack rw900? Thanks
I'd love to see a review on the "Biorower" too! That would be awesome. This was a great review, especially with the decibel monitor. Thanks!
Noted! I'll reach out but OOOF that price point 😬
@@Alessandro--- 🤣
You're not wrong.
I have never heard that Concept 2 does not recommend storing vertical. Why is that ? Would like to know cause that is how I store mine. Hope I’m not hurting it.
Every CF box I've ever poked my head into or walked past (open storefront) has had their C2 machines stored vertically.
As I mentioned, I've ALWAYS stored mine vertically as well as every boathouse, rowing club, CF gym etc , but C2 recommends breaking them down. I think it's more for the tip factor I guess? I think it's probably a, for their liability they need to say it situation.
Dark Horse Rowing Thanks for replying. I was hoping it was for the tipping safety. Not any matching damage. 👍🏼
Hi alltogether..my question is also..what's the difference between waterrower compared to concept2 in seconds for 2000m
Thanks alot
Will have to see if they want to jump in and we can do a breakdown there too!
If you look at the cost of ownership over 5 years - Concept 2: $1021.50 vs Hydrow: $2168.92 + (60 months x $38 = $2280) = $4,448.92
Not to mention gambling on the maintenance costs...
Got a marketplace concept 2 model D for 650. Barely used.
Great video! Thanks for the info!
Shane! Did you find the Just Row option on the Hydrow or how to program your own workouts on the rower…
I’m trying to decide between the C2 or Hydrow
Do you have a review of the BodyCraft VR500? Consider it vs. Concept2. thx!
Go to journeys ....no athletes, your just on the water ......set your drag and sound .
so it's like the peloton of rowers. got it...
Great review!
I may have missed something but that interface looks EXACTLY like the Peloton spin bike tablet. Is there a connection between the two companies?
