  • The Dunkirk evacuation was one of WWII’s great escapes. With 338,226 troops evacuated in just nine days it is one of Britain's most famous moments of the war, and with the term ‘Dunkirk Spirit’ being coined in its aftermath it gave Britain a huge morale boost, ready to fight again another day.
    In this film we hear from those men and women who were there on those fateful days, explaining what it was really like to be there, but that no matter how much they describe it, it is only them who will ever truly know the truth.
    War Stories is your one stop shop for all things military history. From Waterloo to Verdun, we'll be bringing you only the best documentaries and stories from history's most engaging and dramatic conflicts.

    French guy here, this documentary breaks my heart, and this is not what you think, so I let you just a few lines from someone you may know, have a nice day in your dream land...
    - Winston Churchill, The Second World War. vol. II. Their Finest Hour.

    "Despite our overwhelming superiority in men and hardware numbers, the french troops are counter-attacking in several places. I can't understand how those soldiers, sometimes fighting at one versus ten, can find enough strength to assault us: this is simply amazing ! I see in those french soldiers the same energy than with the veterans of Verdun in 1916.
    For several days now, hundreds of bombers and guns are pounding the french defence. But, it's always the same thing: our infantry and panzers can't break through, despite some local and ephemeral successes.
    The french high command has very smartly set up his troops and artillery. I fear that the Dunkirk operation could be a failure for all of us: almost all the BEC will escape, because a few thousands of braves block the path to the sea. That's distressing, but that's it ! Dunkirk brings the proof that the French soldier is one of the best in the world. The french artillery, already dreaded in 1914, demonstrates once more its efficiency.
    Our losses are terrifying: numerous battallions have lost 60% of their men, sometimes even more ! By resisting ten days or more to our much bigger forces, the french army has accomplished, in Dunkirk, a superb achievement that you must pay tribute to. They have certainly saved Great-Britain from the defeat, by allowing the British professional army to reach the English coast."
    For those who still don't understand, Britain would have been defeated completely and surrendered too, without the help of "some forgotten french troops..." it's always easy to forget and create a clean history...

      @phlm9038 3 роки тому +6

      I can fully relate to what you said. To this day the memory of these forgotten soldiers is still not commemorated in France as they are the symbol of the defeat of 1940, followed by four years of collaboration. At the same time they are the laughing stock of other countries and even of some French who don't know the details of the Battle of France. As Gervase Phillips said, the Battle of France is not just a french defeat, this was an allied defeat.

    My Grandfather was there. He'd been conscripted into the 140th (5th London) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery which I think were deployed as infantry for the first months of the British invasion of France. He only managed to get picked up off the beach quite late into the evacuation. Afterwards he was deployed to North Africa and Italy. He was commissioned in the field and at the end of the war was not permitted to demobilise for a further year as the army kept him on as an instructor. Most of this we know from our Grandmother. He didn't talk about it until a couple of years before he died in 2011.

    Dear @War Stories. This is a part of History Hit. As such one should think that conversion codecs were in order and done professionally when you convert videos before uploading to UA-cam. I often listen to the soundtracks of these Documentaries with headphones (professional ones, I'm a sound technician), and the Narration Tracks are almost impossible to distinguish. They drown out in the Soundtracks and Film Audio Tracks, making it nearly impossible to hear what people are saying, even when I have my equalizer cranked up on full blast on Human Voice Frequency Intervals. And with those settings, it is barely possible to catch what is said and it really detracts from listening to the Narrator and the Brave Men & Women in the interviews.
    This happens on numerous videos on this channel.
    - Why?
    It isn't exactly a good commercial for History Hit TV…

    Truly, the children of today aren't taught or told much... I'm an American, and I read a comment the other day by someone who had NEVER heard/heard of one of the American patriotic songs "My Country Tis of Thee" which has a melody quite similar to "God Save the Queen" - this person asked why God Save the Queen was played at President Ronald Reagan's funeral....
    For an English lad to have never have heard of Dunkirk is bloody inexcusable !

    Dunkirk and the fall of Singapore both sum up how badly the British army proformed in World War 2.
    It was a joke!
    It was simply too small to be effective on it's own and by 1943 was basically a small support force to the vastly larger American army that eventually made up 70% of all allied troops on the Western front by wars end.
    I think the British people are very ungrateful for what America did for them and the rest of Europe and the fact they and the rest of Europe spend the bare minimum on their militaries today while the United States is stuck having to bare the full brunt of defending the free world kinda says everything.

    • @fabs8498

      How ungrateful ? All the high national debts are paid. Usa is a partner in everything and our armies are allied. 60 years after ww2 usa have still military bases in Europe. Xhat else ? Selling ourself our democratcies and freedom to be their servants ? It's done in some countries.

      1. British Empire all troops should count together, so the American troops counts % decreasing. Australian troops fought in the Pacific theater after El Alamein only. Australian division took back to join to the Amaricans. New Zealander troops fought in Italy and in the Pacific. Indian army fought in Italy and against the Japan in Burma. At Burma theater the American troops % (for example Merril marauders) were very low to British Empire troops (UK, African, Indian etc) and the Chinese troops (From Junnan). In Europe the Canadian, Indian and South African troops were used beside Polish divisions.
      3. After Pear Harbour and lost of Prince of Wales+Repulse and the Japanese airporce powe South East Asia was lost and every division was effort thrown out the window. The British High Command sent a division round Africa to Egypt and after Pearl Harbour and the British High Command thought to send to India and they senr to Malaysia. McArthur lost Philippinas too.

    • @avenaoat
      @avenaoat Рік тому

      British Indian army was about 2.5 million people strong in 1944, African soldiers from Nigeria, nowdays Ghana fought in Burma theater. Dominium soldiers from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. Polish, Palestinian etc soldiers were with the British.
      Only to count British with the about 49 million population the picture is distorted. British fleet had positive role in Okinawa to decrease the American losses in the kamikaze attacks. Similar opinion was from the Soviet (Russian) historians that the Soviet army could win without the Western Allied powers.
      Yes British did not win against the axis alone, but American did not win without British Empire too.
      BTW the Free French (Northern Africans) soldiers were very few, but their role in breaking through the Gustav line was big in 1944 spring.

    The sad and pathetic thing is, the British youth for the most part consider these brave men, like the American youth for the most part consider our brave men... just silly frail old men with nothing of value to share. Over 90% of actual history has been dropped from the history books, in favor of PC drivel. We're all "friends" now, so it would hurt somebody's feeling if we talked about what happened in the past. So, nothing more than possibly a line or maybe two about Dunkirk appears in all the history books throughout the entire education of the British youth. And, of course, the teachers don't bother to cover even what is in the books. So, nothing more than possibly a line or maybe two about the Bataan Death March appears in all the history books throughout the entire education of the American youth. And, of course, the teachers don't bother to cover even what is in the books. The idea that, if we don't study history... we are doomed to repeat it... has been lost by all the liberal scholars as they are too busy rewritten history into again, Politically Correct drivel. And, I fear... we are doomed to repeat it. Does Dunkirk sound like anything that has happened in the last couple days, and is still happening for civilians left behind??? Except, in this case, the equipment left behind was NOT destroyed. It was left behind in perfect condition!!! Or decades ago in Nam??? We keep repeating the same mistakes... because we are not learning from history!!!
