The Kokoda Track Campaign: How The Japanese Were Turned Back in New Guinea | Battles Won & Lost

- The destruction of the Anglo-American convoy PQ 17 was one of the worst naval disasters of WWII. Hunted down by German U-Boats, Luftwaffe and the notorious Tirpitz, the 35 merchant ships headed for Arkhangelsk were carrying 700 million dollars worth of cargo, including tanks, aircraft and other supplies. With these supplies all destined for the Soviets to utilise against Hitler’s during Operation Barbarossa, what effect did the destruction of this convoy have for the German war effort, and what might have happened had it reached its destination intact?

Operation Typhoon isn’t mentioned until the 41st of 49 minutes. But I loved learning about all of the activity that was a lead up and background to Operation Typhoon too. Now I just want the in depth look at Typhoon itself.
These videos are often misleading in the title. The segment on the battle for Moscow (operation Typhoon) is at the very end of the video and, consequently, is nay given cursory coverage. The video quality is good verbally, but title is completely misleading. If you tuned in to see comprehensive discussion of Typhoon, you would be disappointed.
Back in the early 90's, a friend of mine ran a jewelry store, and one of his customers was a gent who's ship was sunk in PQ-17. He was in a lifeboat for 14 days before being picked up. He sailed on a few more convoys, and once again had to take to the lifeboats. This guy had moved to Florida because he could not stand any temp below about 55, and when it did, he just stayed inside until it was warm enough to go outside again. He gave me a copy of a book which detailed the loss of his first ship, and it was lost along with everything else a few years back.
Tom was a collector of silver, and probably had about two metric tons of it when he passed. He had some great sea stories, even outside of his convoy runs. As I had been in the US Navy in the '60's, and had gone to Vietnam the long way round, we were able to share a lot. Great guy, and sure miss sitting and drinking coffee in the jewelry store with him.
@Craig Wilcox That's amazing! Thanks for sharing. 👍

The sacrifice of the merchant sailors in the Battle Of The Atlantic (& The Pacific too)
for the final Victory, can never be emphasized enough.
I had a patient that joined the US Navy in 1938, he was an Machinist Mate/Engineer on the USS Niblack a DD, doing Neutrality Patrol Convoys to England and back. Quote "those 8 knot convoys to England were terrible, the North Atlantic storms, the ship rolling so far you'd be walking on the bulkhead not the deck of the engineroom, wondering if she was going to right herself, then she'd roll the other way". They were in Convoy with the USS Rueben James, OCT 1941 when the Rueben James was torpedoed and sunk with large loss of life, Halloween Night Oct, 1941 BEFORE we were supposedly in the shooting war, Pearl Harbor Attack was still a month or so away. I asked why, as we weren't "in it" yet. He stated "they don't mention that WE depth Charged that submarine off Iceland some days before so he was retaliating. The Niblack stopped to pickup survivors, not knowing they were in the sights of the U Boat. The U Boat commander decided that they were doing a humanitarian thing so he wouldn't sink them also. Eric Topp, WW2 U Boat ACE went on to become an Admiral in the post War German Navy.

Thank you so much for uploading this! The PQ-17 convoy has come up a couple times in conversation and i meant to look into it. Perfect timing!
Before his bad reputation days, David Irving has written a good book on PQ 17.
Worth checking out PQ 13 too described in the book "Frozen Fury".
"The PQ-17 convoy has come up a couple times in conversation". That's not something you hear everyday. :)
Some of the best coverage I've seen. Thank you.
GOOD CHANNEL.
SHOWS ALMOST AN HOUR ON EACH VIDEO WHAT PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE WARS OF THE PAST.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK 💯
Just the logistics is incredible
Excellent documentary.
Good documentary......eventually!!!
3/4 of this part of the doc has nothing to do with the battle of Moscow. If you’re going to splice up an existing documentary at least do it correctly !! Great doc regardless thx for the upload
VERY informative...Thanks for share!!!
A lot better if the "Battles Won & Lost" section had been given its own video. As a WW2 buff, I was hoping that this video would focus on the history and fate of Convoy PQ 17. A great example of the phrase, "Been there, done that."
This was great concise information of the war with Rommel in N. Africa, I learned a lot. I actually, know more about the Allied forces against Germany/Italy than I ever did.
I like this channel. It deserves more recognition.
Absolutely
I learn alot from these "battles won battles lost" series. But they do seem to jump around without showing more geological evidence where these new battle areas are. Thats all. Love the content and its free.........

Why blur anything? You literally showed someone blown in half, only saw was legs… so why blur literally anything in this video?
The ship that "hit ice" and "had to turn back" was probably named Kamchatka.
Port Moresby was the worst place in the world, and it´s still the worst place in the world.

You have got to hand it to the Russian people, note people and military not state, what a fabulous tenacious and heroic fight that they put up, bravo.
@Leftist Hunter Apparently that's maybe as much myth as truth. One of the youtube historians went in to it. Possibly TIK or Mark Felton?
@Leftist Hunter He did say "people... not state".
Too bad about the politicians who had them on the wrong side until they almost got slaughtered (and would have without the Western supply lines) though. Leaves thoughtful types with mixed perceptions, especially since they wound up wrecking Eastern Europe for decades in the denouement.
@@nabirasch5169 Hi
No doubt that the Russian state were murdering treacherous and double dealing, but the fact is the Russian broke the back of the Germany army, the American and British supplies made a big difference of course and the British merchant navy paid a huge price getting them up to archangel
Russia committed as many war crimes as Germany did in WW2

Am I missing something here? I thought this was supposed to be about a convoy on the sea, not land convoys from the USSR down to Australia.
It‘s a bit confusing but the channel seems to always feature several stories in a video but the thumbnail and titel presents it as a documentation about one specific topic. Strange choice after all but good content still.
PQ-17 actually starts at 32:30
The whole documentary is made for the mentally handicapped so this is just nit picking.

The Russian objective was not the conquest of Finland but the seizure of strategically important areas for the defense of Leningrad. The Allies had broken the German codes and knew where Rommel would strike.
I want to know where you can buy this huge board game these two guys are playing!!

Interesting material certainly; but a mis-leading video/title.
It should perhaps be called- 'A little bit on PQ17, but mostly on the rest of the war'. ;o)
How come millions aren't watching this?
Np one cares about "old timey" history, only the "keyboard historians" do.
One of the biggest blunders of the second world war had to be the PQ 17 convoy, the British heard a rumour that the the German battleship tirpitz was going to attack the convoy and simply panic,it was ever man for himself more than half was sunk, close to 400 million in supplies went to the bottom of the north Atlantic. In today's money it would be in the billions 😥
Might want to redo the map depicting Finland in the beginning of the section about the Battle of Suomussalmi. It depicts Finland's borders as they are today, after the territorial losses of the Continuation War (1941-44), and because of this the Mannerheim line is in the wrong place.
I didn't watch the part about PQ17 yet, but I'm sure it mentioned that the information on the convoy was given to the Germans by Finnish signals intelligence, who were able to decipher many Russian codes.
Very interesting, especially when considering Churchill's reluctance to declare Finland an enemy.
@@nabirasch5169 Well, I doubt the British knew about the sharing of information, and PQ17 in particular.
Western intelligence services were extremely interested in Finnish signals information at the end of the war. In 1944, when it was not entirely clear what the Soviets would do after the armistice, Finns sent a lot of their material to Sweden for safekeeping. A lot of the material ended up in not just Swedish hands, but also British and US hands (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Stella_Polaris)
And the Finnish situation was very tricky morally speaking. The Soviets were the aggressor in the Winter War (1939-40) and as they continued to harass Finns after the war and considered Finland to be in their Sphere of Influence. Finland had very few choices. Most of them bad. And Finns were out for revenge in 1941. Churchill was most likely very aware of this.
Misleading title for this video. I guess I’m not the only one to notice.
I'm not too sure who won that staring contest
I don't like this channel. It deserves more recognition

'With these supplies all destined for the Soviets to utilise against Hitler’s during Operation Barbarossa, what effect did the destruction of this convoy have for the German war effort'
@Pendulous Testicularis
Less than that, given that Barbarossa finished in 1941 and PQ17 toooik place in 1942.
German accounts speak of British and American equipment turning up in considerable quantities all over the Russian front.
This is NOT PQ 17.

Unfortunately for the British her colony's didn't produce much in terms of fighting men,the Indian divisions tried their best but wasn't cut out for this kind of brutal fighting...
Actually the Indians and Gurkhas performed better than many of their British counterparts
I could watch this thing, this Barbarossa invasion a hundred different ways on a hundred different days and each and every single time I would come to the same conclusion and that conclusion is the Wehrmacht would have taken Russia if they had 25% more Luftwaffe fighter jets.
The Soviet Union entered the war in 1939 by hitting Poland. They were not on the Allied side & there was no Lend Lease agreement then.
At first Germany and Russia was allies, but everyone knew that wasn't gonna last.
Actually France and England had pledged to come to Poland’s aid if attacked. However logistically it would have been impossible. With the quick overrun there was no way they could aid her.

Excellent presentation. I wonder why the German tanks froze up in the winter but the Russian tanks did not ? Anybody ??
They did. I would also think the Russians knew a little more on getting them going again because its russia. Ive heard of American tankers in the battle of the bulge that started a fire under there oil pan because it had become so thick the motor wouldnt turn over.
Russian may have had some type of better preheating both for oil, block and fuel and a few field tricks learned fighting Finland. At some point if it gets very cold, none of it works.
Russia had tremendous amounts of T34 tanks .. volume
Russia was the only Country in WW2 to use diesel fuel , don't know if that was it or not , but could be...
@@arrow-lo7jf Interesting point of information, but I don't think that's the explanation. Diesel oil actually is inferior to petrol in freezing temperatures and needs additives to even be on par.
@@pultsari9036 You are right , I looked that up after my reply ( An itch I had to scratch ) According to a Soviet tanker , Fyodor Yanovich , and the manual of a Soviet tank in winter conditions ,
A. Petroleum is to be added to diesel fuel : about 15 - 40 % according to air temperature . They did the same as the Germans to warm the tanks , stoves , pits even trenches. Thanks for the conversation and Info , got me thinking , which is a good thing. peace.
2000 Japanese (04:57) fighting on the Kokoda Track, but 6% of 150.000 survived? (10:50)
Is there some miscalculation?
The whole IJ force on New Guinea was meant I guess (incl. those north at Hollandia, Lae etc.). And even if they had terrible losses and needed to retreat through dense jungles, the 6% is probably too low, I would guess 15-20% survived (incl POWs)
Yeah, they botched it. There are some better accounts on UA-cam.
@@UsoundsGermany You mean that there were 150.000 there and didn't move to reinforce the 2.000 who were going for the CAPITAL???
