  • Liza belts the hell out of the Cole Porter song for members of the press at Carnegie Hall prior to her record breaking run in May of 1987.

I was lucky enough to have seen her 1987 Carnegie Hall Show (2 or 3 times!). It was amazing and something I will NEVER forget. Liza at the absolute top of her game. I was also there for her 1979 Carnegie Hall performance. After she did countless encores (and actually went off stage and took a shower!), the house lights came up and still nobody left. She came back out with wet hair in her robe (Halston was on stage with her and held her hand). She was very touched. She sang Mammy. Priceless.

She never sang better than she did in 1987. Just AMAZING.

Liza is one of those rare troupers who gives 150 % to all of her audiences. Doesn't no matter how big or how small.

There must be something about the air in Carnegie Hall - this concert was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G - a complete triumph much like Judy had in '61

What a gem to see this, a true hidden treasure for all to see. I saw this show when she toured with it later that year in the San Franciso bay area.. She did pieces of this show for many years after// just saw her a few weeks ago at the Hollywood Bowl.

I always thought this was a droning song that wasn't worthy of either Judy or Liza.....BUT I still listen in rapt attention because they perform it GREAT!! Wonderful, powerful, belting. AMAZING!!! This was wonderful to see. I didn't even know it existed. Thanks Jacub!!!

Just great! I also thought this song was a bit staid. I listened to the LP of the show recently and could not get this song out of my head. Usually it's "I Never Has Seen Snow" or "I Don't Want Him, You Can Have Him", but this song is a great one to bookend with "Theme from New York, New York" ending the show. I saw this show twice. Once on 5th row and the other from the top balcony. Liza plays marvelously in the nosebleed section. She seems to know how to include every member of the audience. My regret is that the rest of this show was not filmed. Oh, well....

I think can help a little with Davidalp1's question: Pappy is Liza's conductor and drummer, Bill LaVornga. That's what she called him. And my guess is that she came back out wearing the dress she wore for the second half of the concert, which was made of red velvet and matched the color of the seats at Carnegie Hall.

Sorry, I didn't see your questions sooner. I'm glad you like the video. I got this video in the late 80s from a Garland collector who has since "joined the choir." I posted it on YT some years ago before that account was closed. I'm not sure what she says to Pappy... The impression I get from the "Change your dress and come right back" is that she was to do another number, or at least pose for more picks? Not sure...

Something strange happen at the end of the song. She said goodbye and thank you very much. Then, she looked confused and someone said Liza could you change and come back.

Minor nitpick: Liza's pointing in the direction of Queens when she's singing about Hackensack.

Wow this is an AMAZING video! thanks SO much for posting it Jaycub!! Where did you get it from its fantastic. I love the double CD of Liza at Carnegie hall 1987, (its MUCH better than the 1979 concert on Vinyl), the Kander & Ebb medley at the end is THE BEST work/medley that Liza ever did! It is just SONG after SONG after Song of great hits... I wonder what she says at the end? Can anyone hear it? She says "Pappy" or something, but then what? And whats the bit about her "changing her dress"?

What was that ridiculous movie she was in with Bert Reynolds where she played a Lady of the night, with Bert Reynolds.? She made that pathetic man look so bad and such a second rate actor that he always was, it was hard to watch as she chewed him up and spit him out, actually I laughed so much, Bert must have really disliked her soooo much.

good tune for overture, musically, lyrics stale and bland....far from F. Ebb
