    I had a 10th gen iPad ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.

    One thing to watch out for with Procreate (or any drawing/painting app for that matter) is True Tone, especially if you intend to print your image or export it to view on another device. TT shifts the screen tint to make it look "natural", but the graphics app does not, so what might look like the right color on screen will not be the same color the app is registering. For example, if True Tone happens to be tinting your screen with a slight blue, your drawing painting result will tend to look warmer (orange-ish) when viewing it on another device. Likewise, if TT is tinting your screen orange, the actual result will tend to look colder (blue-ish). Basically, because your screen is tinted and you as artist are basing your color choices off of what you see, the tint of the screen is offsetting what you are actually painting in the app.
    This is akin to doing a physical painting while being lit with colored lights or tinted glasses.
    For a more consistent experience with any color-oriented app I would recommend disabling True Tone.

      As a wacom cintiq user I was disappointed because with the slippery screen I couldn’t sketch well. With a pencil feeling screen protector the experience changed a lot. I also recommend it. But only if you are an artist or a pencil user. Those screen protectors reduce a little the screen visual quality. But is not a problem at all. The drawing feeling deserve the change. Glad you got a reply. I was shocked when I booted up my new iPad Air 4 because my 7th Gen iPad actually gets more layers with 3GB of RAM than the new one does with 4 GB of RAM. I was expect more layers or at least the same amount but not LESS! I hope they figure this out soon because, like a lot of people, apps like ProCreate are part of the reason I was eager to upgrade to the new Air (especially since USBC means I can finally use the "project Canvas" onto an external monitor).

    Very good review. I just bought an iPad air 2020. I’m a wacom Cintiq user and I really can not draw well because the screen is very slippery. I bought a paper feel screen protector and the change for drawing and sketching was amazing. As you say you lose a little screen quality (but get used to it very fast) but the feeling using the pen is much much better. It also reduces reflections and fingerprints. I really recommend to use it. I bought a normal one. I didn’t buy any specific brand.

    I bought this one yesterday instead of Samsung Tab S7.
    I have stated time and time again how I hate Apple, and recommended Samsung's to others, but with Samsung copying the BAD aspects of Apple more than the good ones, I thought I should just save the hassle and buy the real thing.
    This version of Air is the tipping point. Over 50% faster chip than Samsung's and better software support. File system is still shit, but having USB-C is the great compensator - just copy files to a USB-C thumbdrive then copy again into other devices. Granted, Apple didnt implement USB-C willingly(thanks, European Union lawmakers), but the end result is all that matters.
    Your review and what you showed with the 60Hz display influenced me a lot. I do notice that the strokes are trailing a few mm away from the pencil point when I want to make very quick lines, but the difference is so negligible, everything else about Air 202 makes up for it.

    • @lukatrdina5108
      @lukatrdina5108 3 роки тому

      im considering the tab s7, so if you could tell me what made you go for the Air? I'm thinking s7 bc it has a 120Hz screen, more storage (128 vs 64 at base conf), comes with a stylus so it saves me over 100$, the battery lasts longer, perfomance is more than fine (i know the air scores way more on benchmarks, but for now i draw on a 2014 Nexus 9, no problems with performance, so im thinking s7 will do me just fine)...literally the only thing i dont like about the s7 is the aspect ratio, i like the 4:3 of the ipads more

    • @geneoakley
      @geneoakley 3 роки тому

      @@lukatrdina5108 My answer will be a heavily condensed one. explaining properly in text will turn this into a 100page report.
      1. Software support. Apple's app store is simply unrivaled in available resources and patch updates when things go wrong. You dont get that much on Google Play when it comes to art.
      2. Hardware stutters or crashes less often if you're pushing the hardware limits(use very big canvas, use vector)
      3. This is a principal matter - Samsung is imitating less of Apple's good things and more on what bad things Apple do.
      -apple started selling phones with sealed battery, samsung does that too
      -apple stops including Micro SD card slots, Samsung does that too with the phones
      -apple took away headphone jack, and Samsung does that too
      -apple took away the fucking charger and Samsung does that too.
      So i thought to myself, FUCK IT. IF SAMSUNG WANTS TO COPY THE BAD THINGS APPLE DO BUT NOT MATCH IT IN GOOD THINGS LIKE CPU PERFORMANCE AND GOOD APP ECOSYSTEM, I'LL JUST BUY APPLE. I felt betrayed by Samsung when they took away the charger especially.

    I love your reviews so much! What I love about your reviews the most is that you seem really down to earth and frankly, just honest! I watched a lot of your videos even though I'm not an artist at all, but I'd love to be someday.
    I need (or probably just want) an iPad for University, and really wanted to finally get into digital art with it as well, so your reviews have all been a godsend.
    I admit, I am pretty sure a regular iPad 8.gen or maybe even 7.gen would be good enough for my usecase, which is taking lots and lots of notes and starting to draw.
    But my eye is constantly looking over to the air 4 and being jealous of it's more modern design, better processor and more ram.
    The most inexpensive option would actually be a used tab s6 lite, but while most apps are ok-good, none seem to be as feature complete as the apps on iPad. I also own a macbook, so compatibility between iPad and Mac would be nice to have as well.
    I am really conflicted at the moment and don't really know which to get.

    I had an Ipad Pro 11 that I mostly use for Procreate. I traded it in for an Ipad Mini, which didn't like because the screen was too small So I traded that in foe and air 4 which I am quite happy with. I put a glass screen protector on it which I like better that the matte. Of course I wasted a lot of money doing these trades when it was all said and done, but not that bad.
    Your video recommends the 10.2 if you need more storage. Right now I have about 27gb free. So for now I'm good. I back up my procreate files to iCloud. I then move those files to my PC (which I back up to external drives weekly), and delete them from iCloud. I have not used iCloud to back up my Ipad because I use iTunes for that. I like that I can draw on my Air using it hand help easier than my iPad Pro.

I will upload all photos and videos of iPad Pro to google photos, won't store any movies, not a heavy gamer either so I guess 64gb will be enough for me. It’s the internet, opinions are allowed to be given. The fact people need to show you the difference in slow motion speaks volumes.
      If you think 120hz makes your drawing experience that much better. More power to you. But since most comments are how expensive tablets are, my point is that this feature is over rated.

      If you have extra you may go with the ipad pro. But the ipad Air 4 is super practical already. It's all what you need even if you get the 64gb model, since it's already typeC you can just plug an external harddrive. The 120hz pro motion display only gives you this kind of buttery smoothness when doing certain screen movements, the drawing experience of a 120hz is okay but I'm used to looking at a 60hz panel all the time so I'm fine not getting a pro (money saved) and also a 120hz drains the battery faster. It's not that of a game changer honestly speaking. It's not like it's gonna reduce the quality of your artwork or something.
      I mean if you can get a crazy deal for an 2018 ipad pro, go for it. But technology advances really fast, and 2021 is just around the corner.

      These are very good questions! I am in the same boat. I will NOT purchase an Apple product with a 2 yr old processor at full price! Therefore the iPad Pro 2020 is off the table for me! I will only purchase an A14 powered device at this time. I suspect that a new Pro will debut in 2021 i will wait or get an Air 4 on Black Friday/Cyber Monday and sale it for almost full price when the Pro 2021 debuts!

      Not sure when the new ones will be out since the 2020 models were released in March. It’s still a good time to get the 2020 model but I highly recommend getting a refurbished one from Apple directly because it’s just the same thing except 15% off. I’m still using the 2018 model and it’s still an incredibly fast tablet. The 2020 model will last for a long time, as will the 2018.
