@@iAmNothingness I know that was prolly sarcastic but I had a friend who made amazing drawing using his itouch and finger when I saw it I could not believe he drew it with just those tools and that was way before procreate etc. having the best and most expensive tool is not what makes someone a good at art, creativity is innate.
Even if there is truth to the rose tinted glasses idea of "good art can be made from anything/the tools dont matter" etc etc Its only relative to the person themselves/their own experiences. Personally, i want to make higher levels of quality for my digital art, but because my laptop is very old and doesnt have the specs to handle digital art properly, 3 out of 5 times i press ctrl+s to save, my drawing program crashes, so i lose about 30 mins of work time, making me less motivated to even make digital art at all. I used to make digital art on my phone as well, but my phone is also old and running on less than 1gb storage, so the drawings also lag and crash as well. There will be times that the only way to improve the quality of your creation process is to upgrade, and that means shelling out money plain n simple.
I have an iPad for school work and art- this is my solution and maybe one for you? I have Google photos on my phone so whenever I finish an art piece COMPLETELY- I send to myself and save it onto my photo album on my phone and since Google photos saves space (it deletes from phone and automatically backup on app) For me it’s really easy to manage storage with Google photos and gmail :) THEN delete it on procreate when you’re ready I hope I helped someone✨
FYI on formatting drives: FAT32 or exFAT are almost universally supported and can be done on any platform that can format drives. I use them on all external hard drives so that they are easy to use on windows, mac, and linux. No need to buy a mac just to format hard drives. FAT32 has a max file size of 2GB and requires partitions on hard drives with 2TB or more. exFAT is newer but struggles with lots (as in thousands or tens of thousands) of really small files and isn't as easy to use on older computers.
I'm a dropbox user myself. My main computer runs Windowss, so Dropbox has the best interface to manage files between my PC, Androids and iPad. I noticed something, though... If you drag and drop files from Procreate to your Dropbox folder in the files app, the file will export as a .procreate or .psd If you drag and drop into the actual Dropbox app, the file will convert to a jpg or png.
Why tf doesn't apple give a warning before letting you backup to an incompatibly formatted external drive?? And why does iCloud leave files on your device, like what's even the point of the service then?? This is frankly trash and totally destroys the impression I had of what polish apple supposedly gives their devices imho. The only reason I'm even still considering an ipad after this is it's the only way to get procreate and Android tablets still have some big palm rejection issues from what I've seen and I really want a proper mobile tablet for art not jankie windows tab shit
I have an iPad Air 3 with 64 GB and it’s manageable if you only use it for art and one or two bigger apps and don’t have 6k Photos on your device, however if you can spend the money, I would do so because you will use your iPad for a long period of time

@@quinnfarkas5164 I'm guessing that people who have storage issues use the iPad as their main computing device. In that case I would say that 64GB is not enough, especially with high resolution images/videos, high bitrate audio files, and all the other apps and games people tend to have.
For hard drives (if I'm not mistaken) exFAT is compatible for PC/Windows and iOS/Mac. My iPad hasn't come in yet but for my time so far with using both systems in the past, that's where I've had most compatibility with. I also recommend cleaning out your cache often (esp. if it doesn't interfere with your user settings/customizations. Also also, a lot of cloud software can be good, but be mindful of the preservation of file/image quality (Google Photos is currently having this issue). Happy arting!
Thank you so much for this video. I’m researching whether to get the 64 or 256GB Air and I’ve seen so many blog posts from digital artists I respect that claim 32GB is totally enough space for a hobby artist. NONE of them discussed the double-save of the icloud, and it’s something that really frustrated me about my previous iPhone and photo storage, so much so that I just bought the 12 when it was available since it had so much more space than my previous phone. I mean, I couldn’t even get Spotify to work after a while, so I had to choose between tunes and pics of my sweet pup. 🥺 Spotify lost, obvi. So thanks for covering just how detrimental that can be to your workflow. We shouldn’t have to actually delete the files app itself, that’s a serious UX issue that Apple should’ve fixed by now. 😒
Hi Josh, thanks for this video. You likely saved me from a massive error! Blows my mind that Apple don't offer ther iPad in a standard 128GB format. I'm looking at the iPad Air, as it's largely the same as the Pro now unless I'm missing something. The upgrade to the 256GB version is approx £150 which is a big chunk of cash. It sounds however that 64GB really isn't going to be enough without some major headaches.
tbh i never recommend artists with 64gb (especially how ipad can eat up the "other" space) unless they already have either icloud or google drive...but definitely perfect spot more-less is 128gb/256gb...had my 2018 ipad pro in 256gb since july 2019 & its been such fantastic device. i also have samsung T5 ssd in 500gb for backup my older art...currently i have around 223gb space so i definitely recommend getting 128/256...
Thank you for this! I have been dreading doing the research to make sure my files are accessible but not stored locally on my iPad. Amazing video, much appreciated.
I use an iPad 9 64GB to work with illustration and comics. What I find limiting are the Procreate layers. But in my region the iPad Pro is expensive, and the used market in Brazil is also a fortune. The price of an iPad Pro you can buy a motorcycle or an old used car lol. I had my eye on the iPad Air 5 for having a better processor and being more "affordable" but the 256 GB version is quite expensive. I thought about using it with an ssd and use the 64GB one. But my idea is to stay with the device for a long time. I think it is better to continue with my ipad 9 :/
@@valentina2375 nope. With me don’t crash. The limitations of procreate are made precisely so that it doesn't have problems with files that it cannot process. It has been slow with a large brush textures. But it never closed. In A4 format, there are 26 layers, and you can easily work with them. I started my journey with an iPad 7, switched to a 9, and now for work I use the PC more because of 3D and because it would be cheaper to buy a display+ upgrade the PC than to get an iPad Air or Pro where I live. But if you need it for larger sizes, I would recommend you get the M1.
Apple basically forces you to depend on and only use their products. That sucks :/ I bought a refurbished iPad cuz man.... Apple stuff, especially Mac's, are expensive
We, consumers, need to have a way to store our files in an external storage. I dont feel comfortable in buying an internal storage in a hardware that will be replaced quickly.
Thanks so much for this video. I'm thinking of buying an iPad for note taking and digital art as a hobby. Originally I was dead set on the 64GB air as I thought it would be enough as I could store things on the iCloud. Documents as far as I'm aware don't take up that much space. This video changed my mind, so I think I might spend a bit extra on the 128GB Pro now, since it offers a lot more value than the 256GB Air
One big problem with external storage is that ios doesn't allow you to properly eject an external drive. Android does--you go to storage, advanced, click on your external drive, and you get the option to eject drive. I suspect some of the file corruption that occurs when using external drives with ios originates in this issue.
why so many issues with apple lmao. i literally just want a mini for procreate. im honestly just ganna email the art files to my windows computer or use google drive.
@@viavante4654 I think both MS and Apple have issues. I like MS, but I'm all Apple now, with an iPad Mini, an iPhone and a Macbook Air. I think 64 gigs will do you nicely. I load my iPad up with art apps, with kindle books and with music, along with projects I'm working on, so 64 gigs would be a bit of a squeeze. My wife has been all Apple for many years, and I've been impressed with the durability of Apple devices. Her iPad mini works hard all day every day, from kitchen recipe duty to streaming to facebook with her friends. She has 256 gigs, largely because she wouldn't be doing memory management on it--I would. She likes things to just work without any fuss; anything that has to be done is my responsibility.
I can not believe that the file upload download thing is a real issue on a super high-tech, several hundred dollar expensive device by one of the leading manufactureres... that's shocking. EDIT: So does this mean, you have the files twice on the ipad?
Unfortunately, thats just how iCloud works. Its not really clear but its not really a backup solution, its a syncing system that tries to get all of your documents available on all of your devices.
@@ergojosh That's crazy but very good to know beforehand. What didn't understand completly is, do you have those files two times on your device after? Like, when you delete the files app does that get rid of the doublicate or is it completly gone from the ipad and only in the icloud after?

Hi, you don't need mac to format your external ssd into native mac file format. You can do it from Windows. It's a matter of installing free VMware player software and downloading macos installation iso and setting up virtual machine. Then run macos system inside windows, plugin external drive and format is as you like. There are plenty of tuts how to set it up over youtube.
I bought a 64 GB iPad Air 4 gen the other day (hasn’t came yet) for drawing cause I wanted to get into digital art but now I’m scared because this will be my first apple ipad 🥲

I regret getting the 64GB iPad Pro... I should have gotten at least 128GB, so ugh... Also the corruption thing with the storage is so annoying, I bought a 32GB USB-C flash drive specifically for the iPad to avoid saturating it too much, and then I discovered it corrupts/interrupts file backup all the time, basically everytime I unplug it it corrupts everything on it, it's so damn frustrating and I started using MEGA to backup my files, since I can't use iCloud to backup files since iPad backup already takes most of it and I don't want to spend on monthly suscriptions, that's what I hate about Apple tbh. For someone that doesn't own a Mac I'll have to find someone that can format that drive for me to be able to use it, what a pain, but hey beside those hassles I really enjoy Procreate, I just wish Apple was less restrictive and more consumer friendly.

Thanks for your video. I'm still very confused (confess I am an Android user at heart which doesn't come with yehse storage issues) I got an IPad Air 4 64GB and just use it for Procreate. I did download about 27GB worth of items which I presumed was stored on iCloud, with my paid subscription. Last night to my shock I saw my iPad was on 58GB used. I copied all my iCloud files to an external harddrive and then deleted them from files. Which now means I have no files in iCloud either. Is this what you mean about backup up your files and deleting the Files folder? My question is, why bother paying for iCloud then if it still ads all that space on your device? Surely it should remain on iCloud when I delete the files from the FILES folder? There are some templates I would like to have access on the device but keeping in iCloud so it doesn't use space but it doesn't seem to work like that on my side? Is there something I am doing wrong? Please help 🙏🏻 PS. I also see the amount of storage available on iCloud on the iPad doesn't correspond with that if you login on a browser. Currently I should have full capacity available but says I only have 32GB on ipad and 34GB on browser. What is taking up the other space that I can't see?
That's why I don't like iOS, on Android you can fully access and manage all files on your device, and there's even a clear data/cache option for each app. I still want the iPad tho, for Procreate haha
Is the 2021 Ipad Air 10.9” screen 256GB good for non professional drawing? Mainly for drawing as a hubby? Is it overkill? It will be use to do the other normal basic things like web browsing and watching movies and watching youtube videos and maybe a couple of games. Or should I go with the cheaper 64GB 10.2” screen 2021 regular Ipad? Thanks
Kind of wish I saw this video before I jumped ahead and purchased an Air 5 with 64gb. I will definitely be looking into getting a subscription on Google Drive though, it doesn't seem too expendive and I am familiar with it.
I'm not quite understanding what you mean when you say "it downloads back to your iPad" (5:44), like it downloads onto procreate twice? Would it work if you move your drawings from procreate into your iCloud drive and then delete it from procreate?
The files exist in both Procreate and in the files app at the same time. So let's say you started a brand new art project and it's 1gb. Then let's say you decide to upload it to the cloud because you want to work on it with a pc or to simply free up space. When you upload that file to iCloud it simultaneously downloads the uploaded file. So suddenly, your 1gb file is now taking up 2gb of space. 1 in the cloud and 1 in Procreate. MacOS doesn't have this issue as you can simple right click and click "remove download(s)" button. ios doesn't have this feature. So the only way to remove downloads is to delete the files app on ipad. Apple can be really stupid with their software.
Looking at this video from my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite with 128GB storage, this gives me headache. I always hated the iCloud backups, even back when I used to have iPhone 4. Turned it off every time. I switched to Samsung, I like having microSD card to dump all my files in there. Never liked iCloud.
Im currently trying to decide if i should take 64 gb or 256 gb but i still do play just one game and it's only for art right now, and i want to try procreate, i never had any apple device to be honest so yea,
One of the best videos on this topic I’ve found! The information about the drive format is a big deal! So I googled a little and it appears “ Ex-FAT, FAT-32, HSF+, and APFS” formats work but NTFS. Have you tried Fat32?

@@iAmNothingness I know that was prolly sarcastic but I had a friend who made amazing drawing using his itouch and finger when I saw it I could not believe he drew it with just those tools and that was way before procreate etc. having the best and most expensive tool is not what makes someone a good at art, creativity is innate.
Even if there is truth to the rose tinted glasses idea of "good art can be made from anything/the tools dont matter" etc etc
Its only relative to the person themselves/their own experiences.
I have Google photos on my phone so whenever I finish an art piece COMPLETELY- I send to myself and save it onto my photo album on my phone and since Google photos saves space (it deletes from phone and automatically backup on app)
For me it’s really easy to manage storage with Google photos and gmail :) THEN delete it on procreate when you’re ready
I hope I helped someone✨
If you drag and drop files from Procreate to your Dropbox folder in the files app, the file will export as a .procreate or .psd
If you drag and drop into the actual Dropbox app, the file will convert to a jpg or png.
Exactly, why isn't iCloud doing what it's supposed to
Format the external hard drive to "exfat" in case anyone has this issue
I have an iPad Air 3 with 64 GB and it’s manageable if you only use it for art and one or two bigger apps and don’t have 6k Photos on your device, however if you can spend the money, I would do so because you will use your iPad for a long period of time
I own a MacBook but I need an IPad for digital drawing, I am a design student. Since I have a MacBook with storage space, would the IPad air 5 64GB be enough? Or it's a bit over my budget so I would rather avoid but I could get a IPad Pro 2020 128GB but refurbished. What would you recommend ?
I use the iPad mini 5 with 64gb I use the upgraded version of iCloud and it still gets full. Personally I would love to have more space but I can’t afford panning for the extra storage so thank you so much for the tips they really help!
I have 64 GB! It’s enough. Only recently my files got bigger , so I just delete my art(after importing to OneDrive )
Feels bad when you just have to delete your files.
Do you also do short animations? I've been wanting one but can't really afford the 256gb lol 😭
@@annehhhhh6515 Bro, 64 Gb it's not enough, I have 120 gb used only with music, animations, pictures, videos etc. And apps
@@annehhhhh6515 if you keep things clean I honestly think you’ll be fine ppl are overreacting
I usually like to go for more in GB depending on what I'm doing. I recently switch from 32 gb to 128 GB since I've been drawing a lot more lol.
Josh: *is 64GB enough for artists?*
Me with my 32GB and Generation 4 iPad and no pen: ok, so-
Me on my 32gb iPad: 👁👄👁
same y’all
I don’t do digital art buuttt me on a 16gb iPad 👁👄👁 imma be honest, apple is too expensive, like I’m broke and I feel bad for digital artists.😭
Me on my 16GB tablet: 😳
2019 256GB 12.9 iPad Pro here. LOVE IT
Me literally drawing on phone Yes
Your voice is super calming and this video was freaking helpful so thank you.
I think it is better to continue with my ipad 9 :/
hii, i want to ask, does the procreate app crashes a lot?
@@valentina2375 nope! With me never happened
Thank you my traditional ass needed this knowledge
Apple basically forces you to depend on and only use their products. That sucks :/ I bought a refurbished iPad cuz man.... Apple stuff, especially Mac's, are expensive
Where did you buy it?
I was just debating over this yesterday when I bought mine! Went with the 256 gb so I can do animation/gif work.
We, consumers, need to have a way to store our files in an external storage. I dont feel comfortable in buying an internal storage in a hardware that will be replaced quickly.
@@jomsies exactly, that is why we dont need 256
watching this is making me worry
You've no idea how much this video has helped me decide my next purchase. From the bottom of my not so deep wallet... Thanks A LOT!
AHHHH! Your in ads now! How amazing is that? I’m not sure how long that ad has been out, but congrats that they picked you out :D
Like, when you delete the files app does that get rid of the doublicate or is it completly gone from the ipad and only in the icloud after?
i absolutely needed this video ! i plan on ordering mine in a few days so this was super helpful ! ❤
How is it going?
Man I love your voice it's so calming
I've never owned an apple product but the apple pencil and ipad hype finally got to me but just when I was about buy the new ipad air i saw this video. Now I'm anxious and scared
ipad 64 is fine, you hav to micro manage storage sometimes, but ipad 64 is perfect
From what I understood, the answer is simply no because it is too much hassle to do a backup everytime. Just buy one with a bigger storage and live on water for a few months
Guys just sign up für all the clouds, Samsung, Google, huawei, Sony, all of them, just write down the passwords somewhere and yitee good. You can find 100 GB of room anytime really.
I love you Josh! I'm soo inspired and happy that you as an African American can be a successful 2022 artist! Thank you! You're so well spoken and very informative! Such high quality videos as well!
Josh thank you for video! but i had question, I’m gonna buy iPad pro 2021, is it enough with 128gb? that’s for procreate and some video editing app
recommending me apple icloud but talking then about issues with it within the files folder is somehow a bad recommendation than... I'll stick with google drive.
Hi, you don't need mac to format your external ssd into native mac file format. You can do it from Windows. It's a matter of installing free VMware player software and downloading macos installation iso and setting up virtual machine. Then run macos system inside windows, plugin external drive and format is as you like. There are plenty of tuts how to set it up over youtube.
i would turn "never go into sleep mode" in the settings on. it just leaves the screen on unless you turn it off urself
Thanks Josh! I learned something valuable in the first minute of this video. But then I'm new, so I have a lot of options for that. :)
"is 64 gb enough for artists"
Me: drawing on my phone with 16gb
Haha that’s me exactly
I just bought a 64 gig galaxy tab S6 lite and inserted a 128 gig SD card.
Are you going to upload a review of the iPad air 4 ??
The autofocus is killing me!!!
I bought a 64 GB iPad Air 4 gen the other day (hasn’t came yet) for drawing cause I wanted to get into digital art but now I’m scared because this will be my first apple ipad 🥲
Its okay, just remember to back up your files occasionally so your ipad doesn't get full. Google Drive and Dropbox are recommended because those 2 don't do iCloud's duplication glitch
@@solarenoi for icloud do you need to paid to get more storage?? I 'never used apple device before and thinking of buying one i dont know how ecosystem of apple work tbh
Is that okay Sir, if we just to use Procreate regularly? With 64GB, Big Thanks for answer
Dealing with iPads can be very annoying :/ I just stick to the phones and I can't even copy those files to my computer
is this ipad great for beginner? i am starting digital art and i dont wanna spend money on 256gb
I literally just ordered a Mint iPad Air 4 today, so 64 GB better be!
Edit: lol I was already planning on using drive
Is it enough?
@@MugendramonX2 for me it has been but I do pretty light art on the side, still I haven’t run into anything yet
What about 128GB? Cause I'm trying to decide from iPad Air 256GB or iPad Pro 128GB.
This might be a dumb question but what about using Adobe creative cloud backup?
Hey love your video and I just saw you in an ad for studio clip I’m going to try using the app thank you 🙏
I need this video so much I didn’t even realize it, thank you
as long as you can draw it doesn’t matter what ipad you got i used a broken 2017 ipad for 2 years
I regret getting the 64GB iPad Pro...
I've been waiting for this from you, saw on your IG status, wanted to ask if is the iPad air 4.
thank you for this info. i was planning to buy an ipad air but your insights made me choose s6 lite instead. im already a samsung user and windows user, seeing how messed up the filing system is for apple and not to mention the transfer process.. imma just pass apple as useless unless magically all the devices i have at home were apple devices
this... nothing is appealing to this and i would gladly buy a samsung tablet if it weren't for procreate :(
@@viavante4654 yeah, if u are planning to do commissions do go for procreate. if you draw for fun and prioritises note taking for sure tab s6 lite also I'm an a I'd use of s6 lite now for few months :)
Thanks for the info, just got a refurbished 2018 pro with 64gb but fortunately I have a t5 that I’ll format with my old MacBook, hopefully I can manage it
Hi !
I have an iPad and I use it for playing and drawing in procreate, it calls iPad 7
Should I stay with it or buy air 4 ??🤔
What kind of laptop would you recommend for art school?
When you don't really need this cause your not an apple user but still come just because 🤔
so wait if you want to create art and store it long-term on something other than the cloud, you need to have a macbook to format a SSD? are there any issues with downloading icloud files onto a windows-based PC?
In iCloud you have the option to let the iPad delete the file and just leave it online. Just go to File? Open the options that will appear.
will this be good if you just wanna start digital ? instead of having it has a sole purpose
It's no brainer to buy a bigger storage for sure but 256gb for an iPad is so expensive! I can only afford 64gb but I don't think it will be enough still. So I'll just hold on 'til I can find an affordable 256gb for me :/ I really wanna start digital painting with procreate.
Could you share what were your reasons to choose air over pro'11?
I’m asking for a green iPad Air for Christmas and I’m getting the 256 anyways because I don’t just use it for art
I just saw ergo on a ad on a youtube video!!!!
415k subscribers?! This channel is growing like crazy
8:10 that got me 😭😂😂😂😂😂
Isn't that like a setting as on iPhone that you can select "save storage" by deleting files on local device after they are uploaded to iCloud?
hello josh! this is me reddragon.. Great video as always!!
@@sethsdoodles oh right!! this makes sense - thanks for that!
I take 64gb is definitely not enough if you are going to be using Adobe packages too ( PS, AI, ID )
Im currently trying to decide if i should take 64 gb or 256 gb but i still do play just one game and it's only for art right now, and i want to try procreate, i never had any apple device to be honest so yea,
I guess Google Drive is better
it was called a usb, it worked, how i wish we would go back to those days
One of the best videos on this topic I’ve found! The information about the drive format is a big deal! So I googled a little and it appears “ Ex-FAT, FAT-32, HSF+, and APFS” formats work but NTFS. Have you tried Fat32?
I'd love to know the answer to your question re hard drives as well. (I thought this ipad thing was going to make my life simpler, not more complicated!! LOL!)
