One review described Corelli as having "the face of a movie star, the body of Tarzan and the voice of a God". I think this is proof enough.
Franco Corelli, "the voice of the century", was a spinto tenor and this is why his voice is so dramatic and deep. There is the hole opera on UA-cam and many many others with him starring like"Tosca " or "Aida", if someone is interested to see him.
I discovered Corelli in college (voice major) back in the '70s. I didn't think it was possible to have so much METAL on a voice until I heard his recordings. Every note, top to bottom, even and strong. Blows your ears off with the ringing sound. You male voice students know what I'm talking about. Awesome voice.
I have seen this video of Franco many times. However, I wanted to see your reaction to hearing it for the first time. Your reaction was priceless! It is the reaction that most people have when they first hear Franco sing. He's like no other. There were great voices of the 20th Century. You know, "The Greatest Generation." They were literally the greatest. I believe that Franco was the greatest tenor of the last century and probably every century before and after. As I said, so many were great, but Franco beat them all. He retired around age 54-55. He demanded so much from himself that he was ready to retire. He said that his nerves gave out. If you haven't already, listen to his Tokyo concert from 1971. You have never seen anyone so beloved as this man was on that day before that audience. It is thrilling to see their love for him.
We probably won't ever hear singing of this magnitude again, unfortunately. But at least we can listen to singers like Corelli on repeat.
This is why we need amazing singing in opera again. It invokes an emotional reaction that cant be explained. The word of opera would be alive and thriving if people were moved to this extent by the voice alone. to hear someones soul unobstructed by false colors, staging, and over played orchestras is an amazing thing. The human voice is so extraordinary in itself the rest is just filler. Go and see an opera in which there are amazing singers and you will be moved in a way that touches your soul and changes your perspective.
Pavarotti claimed Nessun Dorma as his trade mark Aria,, but Corelli makes him sound like a choir boy! I hope your listeners will appreciate how lucky we are to have heard the greatest voice ever - a voice never to be surpassed - Franco Corelli!
Pavarotti and Corelli are two totally different types of tenors. Pavarotti is a lyric,Corelli a Spinto.. Anyone comparing the two voices has no knowledge of opera.

Corelli was known as “the prince of tenors” not just because of his booming dramatic tenor but because he was the epitome of the “tall dark and handsome man” that was so popular at the time. He was like an Italian Cay Grant who could also sing like a god.
He was clearly one of the greatest ever, brought the Italian Bel Canto technique to a whole new level.

When I read posts from people who actually saw him in operas, I get the feeling they never forgot the experience and can recall seeing and hearing him in great detail. When you go to alot of operas you may, some years later, not remember who was in a particular opera but with Franco people seemed to remember his performance, even years later. Since I never saw him in person, I enjoy reading people's remembrances

Nice reaction! Franco Corelli had an incredibly powerful voice. In opera circles most people think that this role of Calaf was Franco Corelli, he did fit perfectly in this role and he performed it perfectly, this role requires a powerful voice. Obviously his specialty was his very big and powerful voice. But he had other specialties as well, he had great squillo, and resonance in his voice. Squillo is the high pitched sound the voice makes, when singing opera. It is squillo which makes it possible to hear a singer without a microphone. Franco Corelli had incredible squillo, he just generated more squillo then most often tenors. I ve seen people say that his voice could strip paint from a wall. His other specialty was diminuendo. That is going from very loud to soft. He played this role of Calaf 156 times, Pavarroti did 6 times. I think it was just a diversion for him, and this is a very popular well known opera. This is a very victorious piece, he believes he has won the princess and he is on top of the world. It is an ego driven character the composer wanted a big voice.

(it is interesting to see the difference in the two voice types, especially when you are not used to opera, everyone might sound very similar on the first listen).
Franco Correli's voice was deep and power that he was enrolled into one of the top opera schools as a baritone. But he did have the money to pay, he left the school and received training from people he knew. Despite the GQ looks and the fact that he was over 6 foot tall, he still had terrible stage fright his whole career. He was really more of a shy individual.

As great as Corelli's Calaf was, Corelli's greatest role is probably Andrea Chenier and his Manrico in Il Trovatore and Rhadames in Aida were also spectacular as well.
That was no schmuck, that was Franco Corelli, the best of all time. "Hey, where are my socks?" Oh, Corelli just blew them off.
This Opera was in 1958.. Franco Corelli was a very rare Spinto-Dramatic Tenor which has a great deal of power.. Luciano Pavarotti is a lyric tenor which is more common that uses ping that focuses to a point compared to Franco Corelli's much more powerful voice even though They both have volume.. Franco Corelli's voice enabled him to have a larger repertoire in the Opera compared to a lyric tenor.. He was able to take on many different kinds of roles..

The voice was absolutely gigantic, the beauty of the timbre incredible, the solid low register, the shrill high register...
Even Pavarotti, whose tone was sublime, could never reach Corelli's level vocally and artistically.
If one could compare the vocal volume of Corelli and that of Pavarotti, it would be like comparing a super volcano with an ordinary volcano.
I heard Franco Corelli in Turandot with Birgit Nilson in Macerata, Italy, and I can say today that I will never again hear such Turandot and such a duet
you can not compare Corelli with Pavarotti, Corelli is a dramatic tenor , and Pavarotti is lyrical. You can compare Pavarotti with Di Stefano. It would be correct. Corelli is a great tenor(one of the best ) . he can be compared with Mario del Monaco for example (he is also a dramatic tenor). I love Corelli, but still Monaco is considered the best dramatic tenor ever . Anyways both of them r legendary tenors .

A good friend turned me on to opera when I was in my 20's. The first time I heard "Nessun Dorma" was a recording of Franco Corelli and Birgit Neilsen. I'm in my 60's now and wouldn't change a thing, when I listen to opera. Music is a gift from God. The brilliance and emotion in these true artists, will last forever!
For me Franco Corelli Turandot, in the car, on the way to school with my dad.
He was a Beautiful Looking man with a powerful voice. He was very respected however , l am used to Pavarotti's sound.
This was unexpected! And excellent. It's a long time favorite song but I have never heard it sung by Franco Corelli. And I have never actually watched him sing - just heard recordings. This might be my new favorite version. Wow, he was good looking.

It's still Nessun Dorma, the only aria non-opera listeners ever seem to be exposed to. At least it's Corelli, who really is the ideal fit for Turandot. Otherwise it's almost certain that there are better examples. Like if I were introducing someone to Pavarotti I'd probably go with Una Furtiva Lagrima or Di rigori armato i seno which show off what makes Pavarotti special.

Much more power than Pavarotti this man was Pavarotti's idol he said he had vocal cords of steel he couldn't even match. Arguably the greatest tenor of the 20th century.

Pavarotti has the best voice color I ever heard, the most beautiful timbre. Timbre is personally preferance. I agree that Corelli is better but Pavarotti timbre is unmatchable for me. Even when he speaks his voice is so beautiful.
Franco Corelli, of course... one of the greatest voices of the post-war period... the hard yardstick to compare the others, the stars of today (too bad for them!). A liberated and very male voice at the same time. He is not my favorite "singer", but he is unquestionably a totally exceptional "voice", very physical, full. A reference to listen often !
The opera is set in China. It's about one of the King's daughter having to choose a husband. He plays one of the candidates. That's why he's in costume. He sang it before Pavarotti, and sang it better. His voice was much more powerful and more professional.....and there were no electronic tricks. His voice, pure and simple. Women went crazy over him.

He had a wonderful voice and movie star looks. A great singer and performer. Carlo Bergonzi was also one of my favourites. The generation before Pavarotti were equally as fabulous!
Pavarotti himself mentioned in his first book when he started out in opera there were ten tenors that were better than him. He mentioned Corelli and Bergonzi as well as among others Nicolai Gedda, Mario Del Monaco, and Giuseppe Di Stefano.

Pavarotti is good of course, but he makes this sound so effortful, like it’s difficult for him. Corelli makes it sound effortless, like he could do it in his sleep.

Corelli laid the foundation. This was a relatively new piece in his tike. Having only been released in the 1920's
Franco Corelli sang this role 54 times at the Metropolitan Opera more than any other tenor.
I saw him in Turandot and he was my favorite in this role. He was just electric on stage. He was the most exciting spinto/dramatic tenor I ever heard live.

The Metropolitan Opera did not stage Turandot for years until Franco Corelli and Birgit Nillson came along. I own the complete studio recording of Nilsson and Corelli in Turandot.

I am familiar with many of the names of the great opera stars of the 50s and 60s. Franco Corelli obviously but alos Carlo Bergonzi, Mario Del Monaco, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Renata Tebaldi, Gabriella Tucci, Maria Callas, Victoria De Los Angeles, Tito Gobbi, Cornell MacNeil, George London, Ettore Bastianini.

Corelli was not the original, but one of the best. Turandot premiered in 1926. Nessun Dorma is one of the great arias from that opera by Puccini, which was unfinished at his death and completed by Franco Alfano.

The opera Turandot is set in ancient mythical China. Actually he did appear in GQ in the 1960's for one of the big Italian fashion houses for their tuxedo line. I remember seeing those ads but I couldn't find any on Google. If someone has them please post.
For me Franco Corelli's performance of this classic absolutely crowns him as the king of opera, there are many great tenors but he was and still is in a league of his own. Another brilliant tenor you might enjoy reacting to is the late great Mario Lanza whose voice is still unsurpassed to this day. I call him the Elvis Presley of the operatic world

Hear how much darker the tone of his voice is? Pavarotti's is brighter more brittle. Corelli's has more punch, or substance. The setting for Turandot is in the Far East, or China something like that. That's why the costumes and the make-up is the way it is. I will probably get corrected, I am trying to recall for my freshman Music Appreciation class. I might not be right but I tried.

No doubt Franco Corelli is one of the best tenors. Everyone has to find out which tenor touches his heart more. For me it's the warm voice of Pavarotti. Especially when his voice became naturally darker with the years. His version of Nessun dorma reached 1990 the top of the pop charts when he sang it at the first 3 Tenors concerts in occasion of the soccer world cup. The most popular version seems to be his performance of Nessun dorma 1994.
Pavarotti is unbeatable in something like La Boheme, I don't think anyone has done that better. But Nessun Dorma is meant for a dramatic or a spinto tenor, with a powerful voice, that why this aria only goes to B4. Pavaroti had a beautiful and precise voice, but it was not that powerful.
@@ZENOBlAmusic You are right if your focus is on the intention that the aria is meant for a more dramatic tenor. Pavarotti himself knew that his voice wants Bohème and less Pagliacci or Otello. For this reason he sang these operas when he was older and his voice was darker and powerful. Let's say everyone has his favourite singer and loves the characteristic of the special voice and feels more touched. I think this is no reason not to enjoy both - Pavarotti and Corelli.

here‘s a different version by marc martel, the guy who sounds like freddie and has sung parts for the movie „bohemian rhapsody“. for the video he named himself „the mercurotti“ because parts of „nessun dorma“ he sings like the opera singer pavarotti and suddenly he switches to freddie mercury’s style.....like he‘d sing it. ....really interesting and well done. excellent!!! it‘s clear to me that you don‘t want to do a third reaction on the same song after pavarotti‘s but at least listen to it personally because i think it‘s worth it.
