The name of the aria is "E lucevan le stelle", from the opera Tosca by Giacomo Pucinni, a verismo opera composer. He sings this aria before his execution in front of a firesquad at the top of Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. This opera. (Tosca) is one of the most popular operas ever written and one of the most staged on the international scene.
I think that many of us opera-goers who heard Corelli over and over again live are, to that extent, a very blessèd generation of opera lovers, indeed. No matter how often one heard Franco Corelli sing, one could never "get used" to such beauty, such fervour, such beauty of tone, such intensity of acting, such musicality, such radiant masculine physical beauty, too. He was so great that he was beyond categorisation, beyond compare to any but a tiny handful of tenors of his generation (1950s through 1970s). He was thrilling beyond belief! In this particular aria from "Tosca", only Beniamino Gigli, in a previous (overlapping) generation can compare with Corelli (on the second act, from beginning to end thereof, of that recording of this opera). The two make time stand still, the heart almost pause in wonder and bewitchment at such beauty and feeling and amazing sound.
Excuse me, I meant to refer to the LAST ACT of "Tosca", not the Second, in Gigli's recording. That recording was uneven compared to Corelli's later recording, but in the last act Gigli and his partner in the title role (Maria Caniglia) surpass themselves. However, there is no weakness ANYWHERE in Corelli's recording with Bergit Nilsson, although Fischer-Dieskau's weak Scarpia is a disappointment, in the sheer fiery blaze of everybody else's singing!
The most amazing thing about him was the walking around sitting standing lying down he always sounded the same, some operas he would be singing before he entered the set on stage and it would still be clear as day.
