I think my issue would be that you have to deal with weather just to run to the kitchen or whatever it is. That seems like it makes it harder on you. I love the container idea! Maybe you could just add “hallways” to connect them some day if you decide to keep them.
Loved this so much! I would love to see a general Freja update video about how shes doing, her training, her and max, and how she is around the build. Love your work :)
Oh that is a great idea, thank you for suggesting that :) always makes me so happy when people are as interested in the four legged member of our little family as we are, haha! Big hugs to you, Tess! ❤
in the future you could even make the 2 empty spaces between the 3 containers into more rooms, like a playroom for example or some kind of "winter garden" with a full glass front to see outside :) so much potential, beautiful!
You might try out your idea of not connecting while you're staying at your parents' home. Every time you need to use the bathroom for any reason, walk outside of their home, close the door, walk a few feet, then go back inside.
I am sure you have thought out your plans thoroughly, this is just food for thought, when we heated our home with wood our bedroom was the furthest from our wood stove. We found a cool bedroom was much more conducive to a good nights sleep. Have you thought of putting your woodstove in the centre container (?).
So excited to see you guys get to live there. I agree do whatever you feel is right with the containers. Everyone will always have extra ideas and opinions, but it always comes down to what you actually need and want for your home. 💗💗💗
Thanks so much, Blume ❤ We are so grateful to be surrounded by such kind people who give us wonderful ideas and always encouragement like this ❤ Sending big hugs your way!
Definitely you should connect the containers with screened-in porches. Check out what is used to be called dogtrot houses. Very utilitarian.. you could screen them in and it would also help hold in heat even though it's just screen. My friend had ceiling fans in her screened-in areas for summer and never used an air conditioner
Yeah, someone else just recommend that as well! Definitely adding it to our list of considerations, that sounds like a great idea! Thanks for taking the time to share :) ❤
Very cool. I also watch “Uncontained”. They have 2 containers that they connected. It’s pretty cool. I’m sure, your home will change in size with the growth of Max. He will need some space and you guys will probably love a living room. Can’t wait to continue to watch your progress. Well done.
you could do a wintergarten style in between them, mostly glass. tripple glazed windows that are common in europe are making it to the US. you'd get decent insulation even in wintertime.
Wow since the van days!! We are so excited and humbled that you have been following our journey since then ❤ We know there is so much amazing content out there, so very touched you check in on us too :) hope you are having a beautiful Monday! ❤
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the space. There is alot to consider so many options. That's the fun part deciding on the design. I'm sure you'll come up with some good ideas. Till next time.
Jamaica 🇯🇲 here happy new year to you all the building is going well so proud of you and your husband two young people making a life for them selves so proud of you praying for your success in every step you take blessings
Phillip this is such a sweet and kind message, thank you so much for taking the time to share it ❤ Sending love your way and we hope you have a beautiful 2023 with much success and happiness! Big hugs to you in Jamaica!
Excited to see Max in the videos! We have a 6 month old boy and have some similarities in lifestyle to you guys, so I am grateful to you for sharing that part of your life!
I live in a cold climate area, -3 to -15 had two 40' shipping containers approximately 1'6" off the ground in the whole time never had a condensation problem, they were in place for 10 years.. The trouble comes when too close to ground no air circulation or not as much. When close to the ground makes a home rodents, and problem for maintenance. For what it's worth there it is:
Just a suggestion but ( if you haven't already) check out the channel, Life uncontained. They built their family home out of two shipping containers but also connected an additional room. She became pregnant in the process. 2 kids now. Wonderful family and over a million subscribers. Her husband has no prior experience but turned out to be a genius. They are working on a new space now
Maybe you could do a screen room across the front of the 2 main living spaces. Then you have a place to enjoy your view out of the weather but still be outside.
Yes I was thinking that too! A deck, some sort of roof for shade and protection from the rain, and screens + shutters to keep critters out would be so lovely to expand the space and to be able to have a 'porch' to chill out on!
Thanks, Buffy, that is a great idea!! Definitely adding to our list of things to consider :) And Heather that is a great point too!! Thank you all so much for sharing your creative ideas with us ❤ Hope you are having a lovely day :)
Your homestead it going to be fantastic! Have you ever heard of a makuti roof, it's a huge open sided covering for smaller compartments? You can see a fabulous version in Naomi Campbell's Kenya home featured by Open Door AD on UA-cam. I think a similar function could be served by an big pole barn over your shipping containers. It'd be just a high metal roof with no walls. Deep overhangs could keep the containers from getting too hot, keep you out of the rain and snow and give tons of outdoor patio area under it, both around and on top of the containers. Plus the roof can serve as a surface for solar panels and water collection.
Doing a great job but it's going to be hard going from the bedroom to the kitchen if you have to get dressed every time to go to the next building especially if you have three or four feet of snow
Realistically Max will require his own space, in a short time. Will you be adding a 4th container? Maybe do a mock up of what it could look like if you partially close in one container to another. And winters in upstate can be brutal so connecting them may make it easier to travel from one container to another without shoveling several feet of snow. Just a thought? Looking forward to your decision.
Seems like a waste of energy and resources to continue to build temporary homes…wonder what the rational is behind that? If they are renting a home off-site, and they are, wouldn’t it be more efficient (and logical) to be building the permanent home all of this time? I don’t know…just interesting to watch how this unfolds.
@@Iris_Transforms_Healing I don’t think they’re renting. They’re staying with their parents, probably rent free. I agree, it’s a lot of work, I think they said they had always planned to have the containers, was planning a work shop. To be honest I’m bored of it and have unsubscribed. There’s no roaming anymore just Lou in a box and Dana babysit every video. Good luck to them.
I like the idea of keeping them separate. Cover the spaces and put decks between the containers, kind of simple and creates lots of extra usable space especially when the weather is good. My 2 cents anyway!!
love all your video..long time subscriber..you guys are amazing...I am just wondering why u didn't build a house instead of the containers? maybe it has to do with permits?
There have been some really great advice offered as to the most practical way to move forward with the build, though, I’m a little confused as to why you’ve asked for suggestions but have opted not to take the vast majority of them? I’m thinking that maybe it was for content and viewership as opposed to a genuine desire or need for feedback on the build. As perplexing as some of your build decisions have been, and this is coming from one mom to another (and dad), once you become parents your choices aren’t just about you anymore. The life you’re creating for yourselves now include the full consideration of the needs of a very sweet little boy. This is why so many of your viewers are pointing out concerns about Max having his own space, what you have planned for the bathroom, the need for a living area, and a mud-room space for your outdoor gear. Not to mention any indoor space designated for Freya. The reality about life is that, at the end of the day, some of us are destined to learn the hard way. Of course, we all want this experience to be as easy for you all as possible. Because we care. Keep in mind, there are folks on here who’ve learned the hard way so that younger (less experienced) folks like you wouldn’t have to.🦋
If you own the land you may want to consider a standard home build. The only extra work would be the foundation, framing, and roof. Also the end cost would likely be the same since the value of the property would increase greatly. Love the content tho! 😊
Hey, not sure what type of pipes you used, but if they are any type of PVC they will degrade in the sun, so you probably want to give them a coat oof paint :)
I wouldn't put the bathroom in the kitchen plus that will stink and take up space what about the outdoor bathroom situation you already have can you just upgrade that and use that instead and have a full kitchen?
My suspicion as to why they're not connecting it like a big house is to keep them as easily movable as possible. In case they decide to move, they can with all 3 still able to be on a flatbed truck/18 wheeler situation.
Knives Out reference 🤌 Though Clue is the original perfection (and The Princess Bride) Also I'd do a large front deck/porch that connects them and allows play area for Max as well in nature but away from bugs/undesirable weather at times. I'd probably screen in with a 3ft ground up wall to prevent tricycles going through a top to bottom screen 😆
Lou works incredibly hard I’m always amazed at how precise and considered his projects are. I like the way he takes time to explain the technicalities of what he’s doing. I’m sure however it turns out it will be a lovely home in which you all will thrive. Max is really cute - he looks like Lou and his happy demeanour I’m sure takes after you Dana. 😊
Heehee thank you so much, we think the same about our little Max :) And thank you so much, I will share the kind words with Lou! He really is working so hard, i am so, so proud of him ❤ Sending big hugs your way, Raine!
Think of how you will use the space. If Max is asleep in the bedroom you won’t want to be in a separate kitchen container. Having a covered walkway could also be a safe partially open space for toddler Max, when the weather is better .
Also, when he starts to potty train, messes that inevitably happen in the middle of the night with little humans,… you’re going to want that enclosed, weather proof, connected hallway from the bedroom to the bathroom - not just a roof and walkway. Maybe something to work up to; roof, then walkway, then before winter hits get it enclosed. From one parent to another, that is my advice.
just be careful with forced ventilation and open flame.... make sure all the smoke and CO goes out through the chimney since this ventilators can pull strongly enough to reverse the airflow in the chimney....
I'm loving the approach you're taking with your container build. It lends itself to great flexibility for expansion in the future whilst being quick and easy to get up to scratch in order to live in.
Aw thank you for seeing our vision :) Taking things step by step, moving forward and adjusting along the way... :) Hope you are having a wonderful Monday! ❤

Max is a beautiful baby, he is such a ham! I have 4 boys 9-4yrs old. (You have time!) Mud and dirt are always a problem solving dance in our mountain/creek home. Thank you, Lynn!! So happy you like watching along with how things are going :) Hope any creative projects you may be working on at the moment are going super well!! Sending big hugs ❤
Yes. Then in great weather you already have a built-in outdoor space between the containers. You're not going to want to sit in a box when it's nice outside.
One connecting room could be used for a greenhouse living area and the other could be used for additional room and storage bathroom area. The design lends itself to many ideas including an A-frame living area across the second level and lower patios on each end with support beams. This is a great starting point using three containers. Can't wait to see it progress.
Idk if it's possible, but I feel like greenhouses in between the containers would be amazing! Food growing right next to the kitchen 😍

Max!!! ❤ such smiling blue eyes. Great job on juggling the build. Going back to Ody to boat build to Hawaii and now container build. Love you guys.
I’m so in awe of your creativity and ingenuity! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Love from Texas ❤

how cute is the baby boy❤ he always is so happy🥰. why the containers were not conected with roof and a big hallway, makes the containers bigger.
Yes. Then in great weather you already have a built-in outdoor space between the containers. You're not going to want to sit in a box when it's nice outside.
One connecting room could be used for a greenhouse living area and the other could be used for additional room and storage bathroom area.
