    As someone who plans on using their system for teaching yoga, I bought the Lavalier II purely that it had a Kevlar reinforced cable, but it's nice to know I'll be heard nice and clear in almost any position I get into. Great review!

    I've just started using these at work and I find them very good - certainly an improvement. The kit and case are excellent as well and using the new mic under clothing is working well. That's aid, I've already lost both the clips and I find them fussy to fit. The last point I would make, is the the outward facing capsule requires a little more care when using than the older mics to avoid having it around the wrong way. Thanks for the video and comparisons - well done.

      I’ve yet to try it under clothing, but I thought it would probably perform better than traditional lavs, although you make a good point about ensuring you get it around the correct way! And yes, a spare clip in the pack would have been nice, just in case.

    Please include in future reviews real-world testing on the SPL limit where clipping starts -- a common, under-reported flaw of most lav mics (as some folks, in dramatic situations for example, simply do scream/yell/talk loudly momentarily, and most mics clip, from deep in the hardware).

    Thanks for the comparison. I did like the Lavalier II the best. It did have a higher level, but I was impressed by the clarity. Surprisingly, I rated the Rode Wireless Go as second. I judged the Lavalier Go as a bit flat compared to the other two.

    I really think, the wireless transmission is the problem here. The Lavalier II should sound much richer, than in this recording.
    Maybe this could sound different, if you plug it directly into the TRS->TRRS adapter, than through the Wireless Go.

Would've been nice to do an audio recording in outdoor traffic situation to see how all three mic sources interact with background busy traffic sounds with you speaking at the same time, to see how much actual background noise interferes with you speaking. @@ProperHonestTech Yes, the only reason why is because it’s not typical to the RODElink Lav. That one has a flat top wow this one has the mic exposed on the side. So would be interesting to see what kind of sound difference he would get from that. I think what I might do is just purchase it on Amazon and test it out if it doesn’t work out just return it.

    I once attached the Wireless Go II (with no lav) to an instructor running the whole of the Ireland's Fittest Family on the Hell and Back course where they were running up mountains, through forests, jumping into mud, climbing up ropes, going through tunnels, and up climbing walls. It was great, never fell off, and gave a great audio recording. As camera man, I had to also run (alongside not through...) the same route, wearing heavy boots and a camera on a gimbal! Fun times.

Thank you very much i have been trying to find this video that tests all the lav mics with the wireless go 2 and i came into the conclusion that lav 2 is the best sounding as you also implemented. Question it should be good with zoom classes also right??

    • @ProperHonestTech

    The old lav sounded muted and dull especially mid high freq and picked up more room echo. The LAV two definitely picks up more frequencies missing from old LAV. Lav II has way more clarity, but perhaps adds in sone raspy sounds and has more sibilance, but it's not bad and you could edit those out. But at least you have something to work with. The rode built in mic is similar to the old lab, but is better overall. It's totally acceptable as is. But the LAV II is definitely clearer to understand, and can probably be made better in post. LAV II sounds pretty good. Might get one to try on my voice, many mics don't do well for me but sound great for other people.

    Lav II sounds like they just cranked up the lows and highs. I'd prefer something with a freq response that is in-between the Lav GO and Lav II (crank up low/high just a tiny bit).

  • @JWS1968
    @JWS1968 2 роки тому +3

    You didn't comment at all on build quality. Most Lav Mics over a certain price point of say £50 sound decent. The reason you pay more isn't sound quality it's ease of use, and durability. For example, more expensive mics tend to be 'repairable' they're not thrown away as soon as a cable breaks. Also, the cable is usually either kevlar reinforced or steel and the way you tell that is the way they feel in your hand obviously and the way they coil up when packed away, a cheap cable simply looks like a scraggy mess and is a nightmare to deal with when rigging it on talent. Also, pro lav mics tend to be smaller and easier to conceal. A good example of this is comparing the Sennheizer MKE2 pro lav mic with the Sennheizer ME2 consumer mic. Listen to them side by side and you'd be very hard pushed to tell them apart. But handle them and use them on a daily basis, and you will instantly appreciate the MKE2 for just making your life easier and not breaking easily when it's handled roughly. A good lav mic you buy once and a cheap one is bought many times.

    • @koolkat214
      @koolkat214 2 роки тому +2

      You just convinced me to get it. I was hesitant on getting it since it sounded like the other cheap mic. Build durability was something I didn’t think of. Thank you. You just saved me money in the long run.

    • @JWS1968
      @JWS1968 2 роки тому +1

      @@koolkat214 It's not just mics either. A good sound recorder often won't sound that much better but it will be more durable and easier to operate. Also don't forget 're-sale' pro stuff is more expensive but it's also better at holding its price on the second-hand market. Buy a sound devices field mixer for £500 today and chances are you can sell it for the same price a year later. Because they're built like tanks have quality parts that last forever and have a great reputation for professional sound quality. So when you come to upgrade and you sell it on eBay, it's like you got it for free.

Just so you know, I went ahead and bought it already right after I read your comment. :) Everything you mentioned is something I’ve never or any other UA-camrs have mentioned. Was contemplating on cheapening out with the lav mic since they all sounded the same, after reading your comment though, you convinced me to get this one instead. I appreciate you helping me out. Guess a sound recorder is next on my list. Haha.

  • @mattcarlson12
    @mattcarlson12 2 роки тому +3

    Honestly sounds the same as the old Rode lav. Your Rode lav 2 tests sounded louder in a few, but that doesn't pertain to quality of the sound. I see the real benefit of the lav 2 being the front facing capsule so when recording like you have the mic on your shirt facing down, the capsule is still facing out instead of downwards like the old Rode lav would face away from your mouth. The pop filter on the new Rode lav 2 is fatter than the original which I don't love. However being flatter may make it easier to hide under a shirt when doing professional interviews. Would love to see a test with it hidden to see how much rustling noise you get with the new lav 2. Either way thanks for this review!

    • @ProperHonestTech
      @ProperHonestTech  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the comment - I absolutely agree that louder doesn’t equal better - I do hear a difference between the two personally, and prefer the Lav II - just my preference I guess. And yes, absolutely agree that the forward capsule should mean more mounting options, which has to be a good thing!

    Try concealing the Lav II mic under clothing and you'll see that this design is really a downgrade of many different things in exchange for a quality difference that's honestly not significant :/ There's a reason almost every industry standard lav has its capsule on-axis to the wire. Add to that: the rear cover of the Lav ii capsule housing itself is assembled with weak glue and can be pulled off just by normal gaff tape, the brass locking nut has no c-clip to stop it falling off and the flat cabling actually makes routing/rigging on talent more difficult and not more discrete (because you can't bend it towards the wide side of the cable) and you have a product that honestly seems like it was designed by someone who hasn't actually used lavs professionally before.

    • @ProperHonestTech
      @ProperHonestTech  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the comment. I agree that I've not heard a hugely noticeable difference between the Lav II and the Lav Go (for example). But the Lav Go is still £60. So I guess one argument is, if you're gonna spend £60 on something like the Lav Go, jumping to £100 for this, with the front-facing capsule (which does make it easier to position) might be a smart investment. Depends on each person's budget and use case though I guess?
