  • @nateb19

    I have read the original p-51 took advantage of the Meredith effect and actually generated up to 300 lbs of thrust with the radiator scoop. I wonder if the T-51 generates some thrust this way

    • @danmallery9142
      @danmallery9142 5 років тому +4

      Check out the youtube channel "greg's airplanes and automobiles". He just did a video that talked about the Meredith effect and the P-51. It seems that it has been overblown in its effect on performance.

    • @rv6ejguy
      @rv6ejguy 5 років тому +2

      My instrumented flight experiments in this vein would indicate that this isn't true. The T51 rad layout is not even as well designed at the original P51.

    • @danmallery9142
      @danmallery9142 5 років тому +1

      @@rv6ejguy That would be in line with what I have heard. Something that has been pointed out is that the BF109, Spitfire and Tempest all took advantage of the Meredith effect with their radiator inlets as well. The Mustang's might have been a little better designed aerodynamically but not enough to have any real impact.

    Wow. So want one of these. Great vid, Mike. Keep up the good work. Btw, were you tempted to go with one of these when selecting your TSI? An airplane should be chosen based on the mission. So, what, then, is the mission? It's so subjective. Is it to cruise x-country with a low fuel burn? Or is it to go Mach 2 with your hair on fire?

      The limiting factor would be the strength of the airframe. I'm sure the engine would pull it as fast as you dared to go.

      @GroovesAndLands 5 років тому +2

      @@Pantdino It's's rated at +6/-4 Gs, so I don't see how the structure would be the limiting factor. Drag force increases as the square of velocity, so it takes WAY more power to go a little faster. Still, the thunder mustang kit plane goes 450mph with 700hp, and of course the real p51d goes 450-475 with ~1700hp. But of course, the p51d is bigger, has more frontal area, and thus more drag... Still not understanding how a Mooney can go 250mph with 210hp and this little guy can only go ~200 with 425hp. Just doesn't add up.

    • @johnbeauvais3159
      @johnbeauvais3159 4 роки тому
