Nov. 25, 2019 | Lyndsey McKenna and Marissa Lorusso -- From the moment Carly Rae Jepsen arrived at NPR HQ for her Tiny Desk concert, she brought an obvious sense of joy. Take, for example, her sound check: Working with her band of longtime collaborators, she seemed downright delighted, beaming at the musicians as she gave notes after each meticulous run-through. It's that attention to detail that's helped build her a devoted fanbase ready to make memes of her every move.
Her performance was a long time coming: In 2012, Jepsen's No. 1 hit "Call Me Maybe" was inescapable, and her 2015 album E-MO-TION made her a critical darling. An extremely high proportion of NPR employees also happen to be fans of the left-of-center pop star; despite the nonstop impeachment hearing coverage happening just down the hall, Jepsen commanded a considerable and captivated crowd at the Tiny Desk.
For the performance, Jepsen and her band played three songs from her latest album, Dedicated, modulating the album's sparkling pop-disco vibe to fit our sun-filled office. From the smiling swagger of "Want You In My Room" to the head-rush of a new crush on "Now That I Found You," to "The Sound," Jepsen and her band even shared a few laughs during the set - and the whole crowd left smiling a little bit bigger.

Carly Rae Jepsen really connects with me as a hopeless romantic teenaged girl, and I love it.
It's especially impressive considering that I'm none of those things.
ltjgambrose the drummer def feels the same way when he’s singing backup 🥺
This is way too accurate :')
Who teenaged you?
So... You're a hopeful pragmatic middle-aged man?
Cool
Relatable, have a nice day.
It's really cool that carly rae jepsen invented music i really appreciate it
In school they told me it was playboi carti but I’ve seen the light now
Amen
She really is so generous like seriously
@StarDust how can you be a Carly fan and not like fun?
Ayman Ibrahim she invented music
it's crazy how she seems like she's coming up with the words on the spot, like she's really performing like she's living it
OH MY GOD--I just noticed that! Really changes how the entire session sounds.
man she just oozes positivity. like...she sings happy
I saw her in concert once and I distinctly remember there being these few guys who were just standing around in the crowd at the beginning, but by like the fourth song they were jumping like a couple of girls at a Justin Bieber concert lol she just puts out a fun energy that's so hard to resist
Even though her lyrics are about evading love or being evaded by love.
You have so succinctly described the main reason that i love her so much. Really well said. Thank you
oozes, whatta word haha
almost like a Emilia Clarke energy to her
she radiates fun and joy, i want to be her friend
she seems really friendly!
@Adam Thuman whats wrong with you
Meee toooo :D
That background singer is amazing oh my god
Ikr? She's better than the main singer. Too bad they couldn't switch places
Agreed. Though, she got her groove with that 3rd song.
@@llIlIlllII Carly's voice suits her songs very well.
it is true !
l l carly wrote the songs -_-
She’s like Sunshine in human form 🌞

Want You In My Room is so cute!
The sound is just a masterpiece. The piano is just PERFECT
Carly Rae Jepsen is vastly underrated. I’m very impressed by her style and vocals.
Queen of having her tiny desk concert delayed . Queen of having to record a 2nd tiny desk concert. Queen in pop music .
why did she have to record again?
João Carlos I think the sound was somehow corrupted on the first concert, so they had to scrap it and record a whole new set.
@@bobthehuntsman1548 Oh, I see. Thanks for answering :)
It’s crazy how want you in my room is the best song ever made
Same here :D
The Sound wants to have a word with you
That's a weird way to spell Right Words, Wrong Time
Is that Run Away with Me in French?
It’s mad that she actually invented Tiny Desk Concerts. What an inspiration. So brave.
Wasn't that Laura Gibson?
Daniel Callejas Sevilla No pal
@@watevapoo you can tell the guys over at Vox to fix their article then! let them know your sources :-)
@@DanielCallejasSevilla get wooshed libtard
King Of Carrot Flower 😂 get swooshed lintard😂😂😂😂
If she released an entire live album like this I'd die.
Well, at least you still might be able to hear it, despite missing your corporeal self!
SAME
Buy her album
Listen to Dedication and Emotion in full. Even the B sides. bops on bops on BOPS
You will be happy in the afterlife enjoying her excellent still happening discography. She’s the underrated queen of pop.
I love how much she digs the groove of the song. She almost conducts the band with her hand movements.
i’ve been to many concerts and carly’s concert was by far the best concert i’ve ever been to. her energy is just so magical and fun and i would recommend seeing her live if you ever get the chance
Agreed I saw her in detroit July 2019 so amazing
Am gonna go there proud with my Public castration is a good idea swans t-shirt and yall can't stop me
Saw her for the second time a couple weeks ago in Dallas. Her concerts are hands down the best time.
The confetti!!!
Never in a million years did I think a hip hop head like myself would become obsessed with CRJ. Shes just amazing. Whats so great about her is everyone meme's on her but we ALL LOVE HER. LIke shes just impossible to not like. Shes so freaking cute and positive. Like she just oozes good vibes. Love this girl
I'm a pop-and-rock head and I feel the same thing about Taylor Swift.
Just saw this, but I felt the exact same! Huge hip-hop head and Carly Rae has made some of the best music i have ever heard, addicted to it!
Refreshing to see non-angsty musicians looking like they love and appreciate what they do.
“Im like a lighthouse, I’m a reminder, of where you going” they way she plays with her infliction and the delivery of certain words is such a minute but huge detail in a lot of her songs…soft voice for big feelings
On Dec 2nd 2019, Carly Rae Jepsen invented plaid blazers
*periodt*
Have you met Don cherry... makes sense since she's Canadian!
This is NOT what Call Me Maybe led me to expect. I have been MISLED about Carly Rae Jepsen!!! Thank god!
you must stream EMOTION - the album then
Everybody thinks shes the same Call Me Maybe girl but shes evolved so much and her style is amazing now
I thought the same thing until a few months ago. I've had Emotion and Dedicated on repeat since.
Yes as Fabian said. I was in your boat until I was fortunate enough to have some good friends point me in the right direction. Emotion is simply incredible.
You have been missing a lot. Welcome and enjoy!
I've never understood the hate towards CRJ - She seems like such a fun and genuinely nice person, and these tunes SLAP
Game Boys it’s because of call me maybe
who is hating on CRJ i would like to have a private meeting with them at their home address with no one around and with me bring a bag of equipment that shall not be named
Those people are only kidding themselves.
Because she has one song and a weak voice.
Except she has a ton of songs and pipes.
So I'm old and a dude and pop music isn't always my first choice, but I've been watching this lady since "Call Me Maybe" and she just kills it. Fun, real, super talented. Makes me happy. Why don't we hear more about her and her music? Love what she does.
She's such an amazing singer and performer but also that band backing her is incredible. They're all loving what they do.
SHE'S SO UNDERRATED IT HURTS.
It like watching golden retriever puppy that learned how to sing. And I mean that in a great way - how nice it is to see so much joy.
She always seems to be having a blast when she performs and it's absolutely infectious, like you just can't not smile watching her perform live.
I like that 😆
Watching this everyday for spritual, mental and physical healing
I think I've watched this concert like 10 bajillion times already. NPR... you guys need to get Carly Rae Jepsen back on to do another concert!!!!! This was awesome.
The backup singer is extraordinary and beautiful!
I still don't get it! Are people complimenting because it was so bad and they're being polite? The backup sounds so off to me!
@@quique6676 Have you actually heard the studio version of the songs? She did great, their voices compliment each other.
@@whoiskeasha I have! Dedicated was my soundtrack to summer 2019. Like the last pre-pandemic summer of freedom ever 🤣. I just relistened and I think maybe I'm just being thrown by the key change. I think with Now That I Found You at least it's a half step or a few half steps down from the original and the harmonies sound darker, but upon relistening they are definitely on key, just different. It does sound good...but something. I think there's just some like minor chords hidden in there that are coming out in this performance.
Woah that background singer is gorgeous!
She reminds me of the 80s pop music mixed with a little up beat punk rock. I like it!
Do check her albums out! E•MO•TION, Side B, and Dedicated! Her songs are pure 80s pop gems as what you will expect from what you have heard on this video.
@@sephjy1370 I agree with you. SUCH A GEM THAT NEEDS MORE RECOGNITION!!!
It's a shame that she only sang 3 songs. Would have loved to see her sing Run Away With Me and No Drug Like Me.
Would've loved to see her play her discography tbh
Welcome to the Tiny Desk Concerts! All artists play 3 songs. No more, no less. Its the perfect amount to let people get to experience an artist, and look for more if so inclined. The collection of artists is pretty amazing. Check it out.
@@bobf5360 Actually, Taylor Swift sang four songs in hers
and Julien.
Erykah badu played two
This is what I call healthy music... it's just happiness.
unfortunately the lyrics are often very sad 😭
Her lyrics are usually pretty sad lol
@@sujal4078 yeap but it is like the ting tings, the lyrics are sad but the music makes you happy :)
@@pgaksr02 i actually get that. Carly's music really gets me all happy :)
And sad key signatures are unhealthy? SMH.
i really would have liked to hear Julien, such an excellent track to open a very good pop album. People need to see past her radio hit and give her pop a chance. She's an amazing artist!
Honestly, "Julien" is one of the best pop songs of all time. of all time.
Julien slaps at her concerts!
💯
Her vocals man omgg she's so underappreciated. Wow literally queen of pop music.
I would love to see her do a new tiny desk after her most recent album The Loneliest Time.
She has so much material, she could do an incredible set. I'd love to hear Western Wind and Surrender My Heart in acoustic form. Maybe a song or two from EMOTION as well...
Make it happen Boilen!
I don't know why I have such a fascination with CRJ . Love her confidence and that she really comes alive when singing. She's so awesome.
The most underrated pop star of all time period. She deserves more hit!!!!
I think Carly rae jepsen would do more.
In particular "Run away with me" is one of the best pop songs of the past ten years !!!
I don't know how someone sing with so much positive vibes
She's 34.
She sing and dance likes 24.
Write songs about the problems of a girl at 14.
And she nod like a 4 years old girl when she finished the last song.
That's why we all love her.
You are so right :) that`s why we all love her :)
SHE IS THIRTY-FOUR?! Omg. I don't know much about her and legit estimated her to be 27 max lol
and she dresses like she's 44
@@ameeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee lol...
and her audience is -4 years old. they'll celebrate birth in four years
NPR couldn't even spend a single cent on giving Carly a sword? SAD!!!
• I did not expect to like this as much as I do •
Carly is very talented
Seriously. Went to see her a few years back because my son was too young to go to the Warfield by himself. Ended up actually enjoying the show. Not a fan of her style of music, but she is a good performer.
SXINT STREAM DEDICATED AND EMOTION
Do check her albums out! E•MO•TION, Side B, and Dedicated! Her songs are pure pop gems as what you will expect from what you have heard on this video.
Such an incredible talent. EMOTION is my favorite album by any female artist since Amy Winehouse's BACK TO BLACK
One of my favorite things a performer can do is smile through a performance, it's such a joy to see someone do something they love.
She's really happily singing, her joy radiated and caught myself smiling the whole video.
I met her back in 2012, she soo genuine , soo underated
Just a group of friends vibing together, awesome.
Lovely lovely lovely performance! Also shoutout to the excellent work by all the instrumentalists. The tone on that guitar is IMPECCABLE.
I love her and her happy disposition with all my heart.
Did you think she was a pop singer that made it big with a single? I did. But, then I watched her performance at the Tiny Desk and she has changed my perspective. Of all the Tiny Desk Concerts I have seen, this is the only one that fundamentally changed how I view the artist. And that's what a good performance should do.
Never gave her the time of day and I’m so glad that TD had her on and that I listened. Definitely a fan now.
Listen to her album Emotion if you haven’t already! :)
Do check her albums out! E•MO•TION, Side B, and Dedicated! Her songs are pure pop gems as what you will expect from what you have heard on this video.
Can’t get over that “baby don’t you want me to? Mmm!”
I love the NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert so much. I've lived for a long time as forgetting this. A few days ago, I suddenly realized the fact that I used to enjoy the Tiny Desk Concert. We don't get a chance to listen to these amazing music every day. Please keep it up until I die.
The background singer singing "a little bit closer" is the most satisfying musical moment of all time.
As an older man who sometimes worries about people's perceptions, it's always nice to see everyone else feels this way anout Carly. Her music is comfort.
If anyone needs proof that she's talented listen to anything off of Emotion
or anything off Dedicated.....
Emotion was so good
"Warm Blood" is fantastic, and Rostam produced it!
And Dedicated?
Emotion is a fun and amazing album, but I think her talent really shines on Dedicated a lot more.
I can spend an entire day listening to her, she is so nice.
Carly Rae Jepsen’s songs are my guilty pleasure.
Dont be guilty!! Shes a joy and has not failed to produce bop after bop after bop after bop and is absolutely one the most underrated pop stars ever so that's that on that
Carly Rae Jepsen can be a downloadable character in Super Smash Bros. and I'd buy it in a heart beat.
I can’t help but also notice Taylor’s Lover album at the back! ❤️ my queens
why isnt she more famous?!!! she's so underated it's annoying, maybe the good part is that we can keep her all to ourselves her small group of fans worldwide
When she ended that first song, I heard this clapping sound in my room and realized it was me. Seriously.
My favorite in her dedicated album is No drug like me and The Sound. Specially the one they did live in Finland. Love u lots carly
Ooooo I wasn't expecting to GROOVE to this but here we are!
ever see something so pure and joyful that you actually just end up crying
Is not the fair that she is still the "call me maybe" singer. I love the new album !!
SHE SEEMS SO SWEET AND SO HAPPY AHH MY HEARRRT
Her vocals on her studio albums have such a unique tone/texture that it's hard to believe it's real. Then you hear this and it's even more unique but just as crisp.
Just confirming what i already knew : she's talented 😻😻😻
I love the drummer belting out "a girl can get bolder" 😂
This is what you get folks when everyone's on the same page 👌💪
i cant believe carly rae jepsen invented singing, her benevolence knows no bounds
The whole Dedicated album is amazing.
Such a good artist who continues to create amazing pop songs but is still so underrated. I love her
Queen of tiny desk concerts
She is so good, I love her she is a great story teller with her lyrics. Such s ray of sunshine, when you need to feel good you can bask in her sunlight.
I can't believe Carly invented tiny desk concerts, what an icon!
She didn't. I'm not sure where you got that idea.

I love how much fun they're having here. It's really intoxicating.
I wish I could see the smile on Griffin McElroys face.
I was hoping to find a comment like this
Thabk you for saying exactly what I was thinking, owl.
My heaven is just hearing Carly’s voice forever and ever. Singing, talking, don’t care. Just want to hear her voice.
She has such good vibes! 🙂
We need to have the conversation on how Carly Rae Jepsen was one of the most inventive popstar’s of the ‘10s.
she's type of person who can make everything and everyone around her brighter and happier. she's smiling but her bands are also smiling. i like to be with a person like that.
This is the 1st time I listen anything from her besides Call me Maybe. I really liked her style, and I'm sad this video is only 10 mins long
You've been missing out man for sure
listen to emotion it's an amazing pop album
she's wonderful. call me maybe was her blessing and curse. people almost refuse to recognize her talent after that blew up.
I remember I discovered Emotion while eating burgers at a mall. I love the song playing om the TV and once I saw it was Carly Rae Jepsen "the Call Me Maybe chick" I instantly went to Spotify. Started listening to the most recent album and LOVED it.
Go ahead and check her other releases. She's considered as a pop gem. You will surely like her songs!
It’s so cool to see how Carly is having fun here! Made me happy ❤️✨
Everybody looks like they're having a good time :D I love CRJ (straight 28-year-old male raised in the hood : p )
i can’t believe carly rae jepsen invented the mortal coil
This album though 😳. It reminds me of before the pandemic. Like crj was all i listened to summer of '19.
I appreciate Carly Rae Jepsen's music so much. Her music makes my life better.
When you listen this video 10 times in a row, and You just want more.. she is amazing... sorry, that I haven`t been on Carly`s channel since she invented that call me maybe song.. but now. it feels I love her more and more every day :)
I really have no idea why I love this video so much. But I love this specific video SO MUCH. How did we get here
Justice for more emotion songs. Personally, my choice is Your type on accoustic
haha i got tickets ( goin today! )
im gonna see her show . im all hyped up!
Music like this is sooo needed !
Great sound. It's such a privilege to see this kind of mastery in such a simple setting without all of the over-production that producers add to songs today.
Wow this artist can really lift a mood. It’s just magic.
Stumbled on this after she was my top artist for 2023. Loneliest Time is legitimately one of my favorite allium ever. Big fan to say the least
God there's alot of talent in that room! They sound incredible!!
THANK YOU THANK YOUUUU
So glad I found her music ❤
I love the way that she really pushes her voice to the edge of breaking. She just barely hits the notes on the chorus of Don't Give it Up, but that is what makes it so awesome. Great execution of a difficult song.
