Carly Rae Jepsen on embracing loneliness, joining a dating app & her relationship with Call Me Maybe

  • Carly Rae Jepsen may be a huge pop star, but like many of us, she spent a lot of time alone over the last couple years - and she’s the first to admit that it wasn’t always easy. She was separated from her family, mourning the death of someone close to her and dealing with the fear a lot of us felt during the pandemic. But on the flipside of all that, she used that time to explore and reflect on what it means to be lonely. Through that exploration she created her latest album, The Loneliest Time. Jepsen sat down with Tom Power to tell us more about it.

She's incredibly underrated. I always felt that she sounds like what Taylor only dreams of sounding like on her pop albums. Emotion, Dedicated and The Loneliest Time are all modern classics. The latter suffered the ill-luck of being released the same day as Midnights but I genuinely think that The Loneliest Time is the best pop album I've heard this year.

@@andrespalacios1909 Let's put it this way. I love both artists for different reasons, but when I see them in a similar genre, I find Carly's music far better and often addictive. Her whole insight about connecting with others through song, and not just thinking of herself or her own experiences in writing... Gosh I love her humility! Rarely do we encounter an artist who INTENDS to relate to her audience and includes them in her music.
I've always thought CRJ's music has this timeless universality to them, that her persona/voice takes a step back and just beckons you to join and sing along - that you may be even more important than her being just confessional.
Relatability in music is not a weakness.

I completely agree with her when she said loneliness is such fascinating thing because I feel the same way. It has a whole spectrum that can mean and look different to everyone, but ultimately, it does cause extreme reactions from us that pushes us towards growth. This album perfectly reflected that, especially as she starts the album with Surrender My Heart. It's so nice to hear about the process of coming up with the album's theme, and I can't help but feel like her maturity as an artist is also being reflected in album! And her going out of her way to evaluate whether her songs resonate and connects to other people is how I knew she's such a wonderful person.

being a middle aged saddo indie geek I'd dismissed Carly Rae as a pop phenomenon years ago after hearing Call me maybe (obviously a fantastic tune, but yeah throwaway pop! ;0). After hearing The loneliest time single on Uk Radio last year I absolutely fell in love with it because it's throwaway pop that you just can't throwaway! It led me to western wind, beach house and surrender my heart online so then i had to buy the album. It's clear that Carly puts a whole heap of time effort and expertise into crafting these songs and the good news is that there's a whole back catalogue to work my way through now so thank you Carly :0) looking forward to being a middle aged, saddo quality pop geek!!
