With that being said who are these "intruders and incaders" you speak of Rafael? Please, do enlighten me, as I am all ears. I was born, raised and still reside in the Golden State, so I'm fondly curious to your accusations.
57 years a Californian but only drove The Redwood Highway once a few years back. Unforgettable. Best side trip we did was The Lost Coast loop in Humboldt County.
I too have been there many times. My best friend and his father owned property boarding The State Park. We used to walk down to the S. Fork of the Eel River to swim. Right there on the Avenue of the Giants.
Steve, About 5 years ago my wife and I were at that light house with our daughter and grandson. WE walked up to it a low tide, what a great place! In 1968 I drove 101 from Southern, California, through Oregon, into Washington. Sometimes I got off that road and took the inland highway because El Camino Real, Redwoods, while really scenic, is slow going. at times. I wasn't in a hurry, but there were specific things I wanted to see. Lots of memories and absolutely beautiful country! Thank you, Rik Spector
I spent my childhood from before I could even walk, to seeing my parents off for their ashes spreading, on trips up to the Humboldt and Mendocino counties, only a few times did we go up around Del Norte county, but all in all, I'm grateful to have experienced so many wonderful moments and periods of my life in these places. There's something about being away from all the smoke and smog of the Central Valley in the summer, not to mention how much cooler it is up there once you get towards the coast! For anyone who lives in California, or near enough to make the drive, I really hope more folks take a week or two and drive up and down both Highway 1 and 101 in the northern part of California. A lot of things I grew up seeing before the 2008 financial crash may have disappeared or closed up shop, but, the beautiful scenery and near the untouched natural habitats have always remained a blessing for travelers in need of a reset from it all.
Last week Steve took us to the southernmost point of California's coast, now he's shown us its NW counterpart, love it! I'm smack dab in the middle, in Santa Cruz. Always enjoy Steve's Sidetrack Adventures, even if he IS a Padres fan!
The drive through northern CA and southern OR is magnificent. Driving through the Redwoods (or Sequoia Park, for that matter), is a religious experience, to see those mighty, tall trees and to appreciate their somewhat musky odor. The lighthouses in southern OR, and the myrtlewood trees you can find there, make that part of the country memorable as well. May those trees never disappear
Thank you ever so much steve, boy do I miss those desolate beaches of Northern California and Oregon! That Rocky Coast is absolutely gorgeous! I used to live out there about 40 years ago! And you brought back some fond memories! I've been wondering if that tree still stood that you could drive a car through! They were saplings before the country was ever created!! Thanks again my friend, I'll see you next week!
Drove this highway back in 2016. I had my sunroof wide open and played Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" while making a GoPro video. The experience among these very tall trees was magical!
When I was a truck driver, I was deadheaded from Seattle to the Los Angeles area so I could get work done on the truck. My dispatcher told me to take 101 which I was able to do. It's such a beautiful drive! I would love to drive that highway again.
Older viewer here, I grew up in the area and I remember seeing downtown Crescent City after the tsunami, or tidal wave as we said at the time, hit. It was unbelievable.
San Diego native here. Made that trip in the late 60swith my parents and between Klamath and Crescent City is a family owned place called Trees of Mystery. I have been back three times since. The latest in 2022. The place never disappoints. There is a fee, but well worth it. A raised walkway puts you in the middle of the trees. And the view from the topof the gondola is fantastic. The drive up through the Avenue of the Giants is awesome. As Steve said, it is great to find a spot to pull over and just admire.
Corona native here, 82 yrs old now, my favorite place of all time is the Avenue. but love going on up to Trees of Mystery. Have done it several times, but never enough. I'm hoping to do at least one more trip.

I'd just finished watching your video to the NE corner of CA. It's amazing the differences between one end & the other! From ocean coast & lush Redwood forest to sparse lonely volcanic hills & valley! Truly a lot to offer! Thanks for the ride! Safe travels!🙏
Drove the entirety of the 101 southbound from Olympia to San Diego back in July 2021 in our 40' motorhome. It was an amazing drive but the CA portion from the OR border to Redwood Valley is quite the haul in a rig of that size. Did it again from Tillamook OR back down but with a pickup truck and toy hauler a year later. My cousin lives in Loleta so we try to visit from time to time. It's so beautiful up there. Thanks for taking us along with you. If you're going up the OR coast, try to visit all the light houses, it's a ton of fun!

Thank you Steve. I really miss California so its nice to be able to go on virtual visits through your and your family's efforts and patience occasionally I presume.
Steve you've done another great travel adventure. While growing up my family vacation would take us in the old 1969 f 250 camper special all over the western USA and Canada. My favorite was always the 101hwy from Port Angeles,WA to the redwood hwy Golden gate Bridge. I use alot of photographs from Crescent City for my paintings. Now working at a job that take up most of my time, your Videos gives me pause and makes me remember how wonderful the beauty of California is. thanks
We are making this trip soon from Redding up to Bandon. We’re going to take I5 on our way up and cut through 138 and follow the Umpqua River, love that drive. On our way back I want to stop at The Trees of Mystery so we will go through the Redwood Highway and take that route. It’s so lovely up there and not crowded.
This is the second video I've seen of your work, the first the NE Corner. I live in Del Norte, been up here about 20 years, native Californian. You did a great job hitting the highlights and I couldn't help but laugh when you showed the look out! Oh my! Pecker's Knob is the name the locals have given it, and when you walked up I expected to see the view! How funny. Yes, last chance grade has been falling down the mountain for years, so sorry about the delay during your drive. The plan is to place a tunnel through the hillside. Good job! I hope you enjoyed your visit. I enjoyed your video.
I used to spend part of my summers in the late 1950s in Crescent City very near the beach. I was about 12 years old. Steve, you missed talking about the ship, "Brother Jonathan" which sank right offshore in July 30, 1865. The ship was carrying 244 passengers and crew, with a large shipment of gold. Only 19 people survived, making it the deadliest shipwreck up to that time on the Pacific Coast of the United States. There are graves on the cliffs in Crescent City of some of the people who died. When I was 17 and learning to fly in Grants Pass in 1962, my instructor pilot was trying to raise enough money to search for the gold on the wreck. I don't know if he succeeded in raising the money, but I do know the gold was recovered in 1996. In 1996, searchers using a mini-sub passed a "glint" on the bottom, raising curiosity. On August 30, 1996, divers found 875 gold coins from the 1860s in near-mint condition. Over time, the salvors recovered 1,207 gold coins, primarily $20 double eagles. A huge legal battle occurred between the salvors and California. Finally, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the salvors but the California said they would fight it back to the Supreme Court again and the salvors gave California 20% to shut them up.
You usual thorough, humorous, and informative job without any of the unnecessary padding of story, humor, and irrelevant factoids that add nothing but filler. Bravo Steve !
In 1982, we camped on the Smith River. The water was so clear, it looked like fish were swimming in mid-air. We then went to "Ship-A-Shore" which was a gift shop at the time. From the angle shown in the video, there is a hotel and restaurant directly behind you on the beach. We stayed at the hotel. The back wall of our room was completely made of glass, facing west to where the Smith River meets the Pacific Ocean, including a sliding door to the balcony. We were treated to a beautiful sunset. We had dinner at the restaurant where we agreed, this was the best seafood we have ever had.
Love your videos. I hope you enjoy making them as much as your subscribers enjoy watching them. I was born in LA 76 years ago and have never traveled that far north.
What a great road trip!!! Growing up in Calif. our family would always go camping in the Redwoods. Richardson's Grove was my dad's favorite. A few times we'd make it to Jedediah Smith Redwoods, but usually stayed way south of that.
Steve, I enjoy your content and thanks for providing the history and narration. There are original sections of the Redwood Highway designated as “Old Redwood Highway” that veer off from its current course. Specifically from North Petaluma through the towns of Penngrove and Cotati and just north of Santa Rosa through the town of Windsor where it reconnects with current 101 south of Healdsburg. These sections have their own character as they traverse through “downtown” areas of their respective towns. I lived in Petaluma for several years and would often wander to the Penngrove section.
I had the pleasure of motorcycling from Canada all the way down the coast along Highway 101. The Redwoods are something you will never forget. In fact, the entire coast highway was one of my favourite trips of all time. Thanks for sharing the northern tip of it, Steve. Fun fact, southern Ontario at Point Pelee Island in Lake Erie is further south latitude, than where you were. Your videos are great from a visual and a historical point of view. Love from the Philippines to you and your family! ♥
Hey Steve, we took a road trip to Seattle some 20 years ago. We stayed a few nights in Crescent City and visited all the parks in the area while exploring Crescent City too. They had a pretty cool aquarium in town. Also some killer tidepools. It was in August an the entire northwest part of our country was experiencing record heat. But not in Crescent City....foggy & cool. It was weird. Glad you made this video. I think the Redwood Forest & the Crescent City area rivals the other natural wonders in California. Man, loggin' some miles aren't you? Last week in most southwest corner of California (and the United States) & this week in the most northwest corner of California. BTW, my wife & I completed a 33 day / 7165 mile road trip from San Diego to Washington DC to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and back home to San Diego. Got home on July 3rd. We live in a beautiful country. Keep up the good work, Dude!
The aquarium is still there. I thought about stopping but the road construction in the area really set us back on time. That trip across the country sounds incredible. Hopefully we can do something like that some day.
Yes it's a big beautiful country to visit. This year we left Maine on March 31st pulling a small trailer and went to Cumberland Gap, where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet then Nashville, on to Arkansas for the eclipse. Then down to Big Bend NP and Guadeloupe Mtn NP in TX, over to NM then up to CO (Pikes Peak, Ouray, Silverton, Great Sand Dunes NP, Florissant Fossil Beds Nat Monument), on to Grand Teton NP and Yellowstone then over to Washington state and the Pacific before heading back across to Glacier NP then up into Canada for a bit to Lake Louise and Banff traveling eventually to Michigan and then back to the east. Total of 61 days and about 11,000 miles. We hit California on a 2018 trip going most of the places you did in Northern CA. Surprised you didn't include the Klamath area disaster and WW2 history.
@@IDNHANTU2day Went a new Bronco we bought back in January. Stayed in 17 different hotels/motels 1 air b&b and the other day/nights with family & friends.
@@michaeldennison436 Wow Man!!!! That's some trip. We also went to Cumberland Gap on our trip. I have kinfolk in Pineville about 12 miles north of Middllesboro & Cumberland Gap. We also stayed 2 nights in Nashville. That town is Vegas like crazy. Had fun in Nashville. Spent 2 nights in Memphis too. We weren't too far from Pikes Peak. We went to Mt Bluesky near Evergreen Colorado. 14,135 feet above sea level. Pretty cool. The I-70 drive from Denver headed west to I-15 in Utah is spectacular.
Thanks for this video! Wife and myself have driven this road three times now. The giant redwoods cannot even be described! You have to go experience them up close and personal. We passed through here on our honeymoon trip from Virginia. My wife said," I could live here!" I told her, no, we can't live here. She said why not? I said "They're all Giants fans up here". I'm originally from the Los Angeles area and like the Dodgers.😂
Blessed to have lived there for a couple years. Summers were paradise. The Smith River looked like the bluest and most beautiful river I ever saw. Spent a lot of time on the trails through the red woods, along the beaches, and Tolowa Dunes. Had to move because of allergies. Left part of my heart there. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I really like your work, bud! I live in Hiouchi, about 7 miles inland from Crescent City, where the marine layer rarely reaches. I'm a native Californian, lived all over the state, and I can honestly say I've found the most perfect weather in the state. Almost always sunny, it rarely hits 85º here, and it even more rarely goes below freezing. One fun point: in honor of my Portuguese mother, I must tell you that Del Norte is pronounced "Del Nort" by the locals (although I don't know if they know why). Thanks for this video!
SA, I have watched many of your videos. I enjoy them and have been to many of the same places you have documented. I made the coastal hwy drive and seen the magnificent redwoods. I was overwhelmed with emotion. On the negative Crescent City had many homeless encampments by the jetty. Pretty sad. Keep up the good work. Boe
I've driven up to the Red woods and camped over night but did bypass the freeways going up, took the Coast hwy all the way and was just one of the prettiest drives while daylight and at night wasn't bad either but this was in the earlier 1980's when I was a young man in my early 20's. MY youngest sister owns land that backs up to the Red woods, 640 acres. Hope to see it some day. She's got 17 horse's on it.
Thanks again for another great video. I enjoy watching them at night. It helps me relax with your back ground music selections, pieces of historical content and narratives. Keep up the great work and wishing you many more blessed years exploring.
@@SidetrackAdventures I was very tired that night. I pulled off the road and saw the most awesome sunrise thru the pines. Even my breakfast at that first MC Donald's (below weed I think) was amazing!
Crescent City and the redwood forest there is my favorite place in the world. There used to be a restaurant called Glen's that had a great breakfast menu, and a bakery. They were closed last time I was there but I hope someone re-opened it. There's a nice little museum in town, and a park right by the bay. If you go up past Smith River into Oregon you'll find Harris Beach, and it's beautiful too.
They have a little food truck in the Rightaid parking lot . Several people have tried but it's difficult to operate a bakery year round here . Although the population has grown since the Paradise fires.
@@ribbit876 I think the restaurant side, attached to the bakery was open for breakfast every day. That would probably keep the bakery in business too, but if they tried and it didn't, at least they tried. They had amazing scones! There was another place a long time ago called The Tired Chicken that was a breakfast place, and it went under too. The last time I was there (in the 90s) they were short-handed, and since I've done restaurant work before I rolled up my sleeves and pitched in. After the morning rush, they closed for the day. Great people; I will always remember them.
Thanks once more Steve for another beautiful ride along with you folks, informative + interesting as usual. Take care, stay safe & the best of luck. UK
My great grandparents are from Sweden. They came here in the late 1800s. I live here in California. It’s beautiful. I’ll probably never get to Sweden but I’ve heard it’s beautiful. Regards from California. 🇺🇸🇸🇪
Great area to visit, Avenue of the Giants is amazing. The road zigzags through the trees, they make you feel so small. Thanks for another great video Steve..
I drove up there from Monrovia with my wife and 2 young sons in the late 70's. We picked and ate wild blackberries along the road and camped at Humboldt State Park and were able to drive through the tree you mentioned..I noticed one small mistake in your video. The line you drew in the sand should have been four and a half inches to the north. Good video and great memories.
What’s incredible about this video and area: lot of things! As a lifelong Redwoods nut-it’s very interesting how the scope of the Redwood forest basically ends at the California/Oregon border. I had to drive through there to see-at one point around Smith River the Redwoods just don’t appear. Later we went down a road eastward from this area and found Redwoods in Oregon-they’re not by 101 or the coast. It’s all such a beautiful place. The drive north from S.F. to the Oregon border is one of the most amazing and beautiful drives in the country.
Crescent City is such a great place we retired here. CC has>>>> 2 Redwood state parks 1 Redwood national park 1 National rec area 1 national forest 2 lighthouses 1 commercial harbor with 200 boats bringing in fresh catch daily 1 Aquarium 2 casinos 1 wild & scenic river Miles and miles and miles of empty beaches 1 state wildlife area Lots of restaurants 3 lakes Hiking trails out the ying yang Herds of Elk grazing along the roadsides 68F all summer long & 55F all winter long !
I remember driving north on the 101 several years ago. What was weird was that I was traveling in the right lane (where I should have been, of course), but the left lane (oncoming traffic) was completely fogged in. The center line was the demarcation between completely clear on my side and (almost) completely obscured on the other. You really do have to be prepared for fog in that neck of the woods !!
Ohhhhh I love this area. I took my parents here many years ago, when they visited from England. What a lovely drive from Washington, thru Oregon to The Redwoods, California! Thank you Steve :-)
We live in Redwood Valley, Mendocino county, my parents live just north of Roseburg, Or. So we have made this trip many, many times, just beautiful all of the way up. Crescent city is around the midway point and a natural resting spot, have stayed the night on several occasions when really taking our time.
I'm gonna be heading down that way on my way to see my folks. Brookings and Crescent City are always lovely places to stop for the evening. The weather looks lovely. Can't wait!
I've never been up there but i have seen the Redwood Forest on TV a lot over the years and it is really very beautiful up there with beautiful scenery along the coast and it is awesome thank you for the tour and telling the history of it Thank You.🌞🇺🇲

This has to be the most beautiful hwy in the US.
I have fond childhood memories of camping at Richardsons grove and getting ice cream at the little general store there. So long ago.
Steve, many thanks for another GREAT adventure! And thanks again for the 4K video!
Thank you. Glad you enjoy the videos.
I grew up in SD, but always loved NoCal. Especially up in that area. Thank you for the memories!
Great photography, great narrative, great music!
And an obvious love of being out on a road trip. Keep it up. Thanks!.
Were you in a motor home?
I love your calm narration and interesting facts combined with the beauty of California. It’s like a mini vacation.
What a lovely drive. Always love the sound of the ocean waves breaking on the beach.
Watching this video on a Sunday morning - a wonderfully peaceful way to begin the day. Thank you!
As always THANKS for another awesome video!!!
Thanks for making/posting this. As a native Californian, i love this place!!
Steve
You are a consummate educator. Love you commentary and your photography. Keep up the great work.
SA,
I have watched many of your videos.
You learn something new everyday, and I love learning new things from your videos. Keep them coming!
I've been up 101 many times this is a very enlightening video, Thanks. I've been past that ship many times but never stopped.... now I wish I had.
Thanks again for another great video. I enjoy watching them at night. It helps me relax with your back ground music selections, pieces of historical content and narratives. Keep up the great work and wishing you many more blessed years exploring.
My travel bucket list gets longer with every video you post! Thanks!
Had a chance to drive that way last year. Since I moved out of California I seldom visit, but that corner is gorgeous.
Having visited all the corners now, it's easily the most beautiful.
@@SidetrackAdventures I was very tired that night. I pulled off the road and saw the most awesome sunrise thru the pines. Even my breakfast at that first MC Donald's (below weed I think) was amazing!
Thanks for producing such informative and entertaining videos. I really appreciate your work! 👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much Steve. When I'm listening to your presentations, it feels like I'm having a conversation with you. So, it all works quite well.
UK
Your videos are like being a virtual tourist visiting places i probably never will visit my self
Regards from Sweden.
My great grandparents are from Sweden. They came here in the late 1800s. I live here in California. It’s beautiful. I’ll probably never get to Sweden but I’ve heard it’s beautiful. Regards from California. 🇺🇸🇸🇪
The coast of the ocean is where you go to have your troubles soothed away.
Thank you Steve, love the work you do.
Great area to visit, Avenue of the Giants is amazing. The road zigzags through the trees, they make you feel so small.
Thanks for another great video Steve..
One of my all time favorite places to visit. I want to go at least once more while I still can.
Another awesome video. I live in PA. and I its so nice to start my workday off with a cup of tea and a Sidetrack Adventure.
Love the visit to Northern California! Great narative!
Many thanks for taking us along hope your family enjoyed the journey as much as I did🤗😎🤗😎
The is the west coast that appeals to me the most, I love the forests they’re so beautiful!
Very good descriptive narrative. I appreciate your orienting us.
I enjoy the combination of sightseeing and history
I drove up there from Monrovia with my wife and 2 young sons in the late 70's. We picked and ate wild blackberries along the road and camped at Humboldt State Park and were able to drive through the tree you mentioned..I noticed one small mistake in your video. The line you drew in the sand should have been four and a half inches to the north. Good video and great memories.
I really enjoy your videos. Good narration and excellent photography. Thanks.
A beautiful part of my favorite state.
Thanks!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it.
CC has>>>>
2 Redwood state parks
1 Redwood national park
1 National rec area
1 national forest
2 lighthouses
1 commercial harbor with 200 boats bringing in fresh catch daily
1 Aquarium
2 casinos
1 wild & scenic river
Miles and miles and miles of empty beaches
1 state wildlife area
Lots of restaurants
3 lakes
Hiking trails out the ying yang
Herds of Elk grazing along the roadsides
68F all summer long & 55F all winter long
!
Plus the caves on the way to Oregon!
Sold! You had me at 68F all summer long.
And just to spice things up we get snow every fithteen years or so .
Nice. Well thought out and delivered. Thank You
I remember driving north on the 101 several years ago. What was weird was that I was traveling in the right lane (where I should have been, of course), but the left lane (oncoming traffic) was completely fogged in. The center line was the demarcation between completely clear on my side and (almost) completely obscured on the other. You really do have to be prepared for fog in that neck of the woods !!
one of my absolute favorite channels .. so much to learn n experience
I'll probably never get to the west so appreciate your videos.
Steve, you made my day better.
Keep doing it just like this. You've got the formula nailed.
Thanks!
🙂
I grew up in medford and went to brookings often with the family. I remember stopping at the shipashore gift shop in the 70s.😊
Beautiful trip. I made this trip with my parents when I was a young teen. I'm 69 now so it's certainly been a while.
Ohhhhh I love this area. I took my parents here many years ago, when they visited from England. What a lovely drive from Washington, thru Oregon to The Redwoods, California!
Thank you Steve :-)
Thanks for another great trip Steve.. Thanks for taking us along.
From one end of California to the other!! Great trip 😃!
Absolutely stunning. Thank you so much Steve
Great trip.
The forces of nature, have no limits.
We live in Redwood Valley, Mendocino county, my parents live just north of Roseburg, Or. So we have made this trip many, many times, just beautiful all of the way up. Crescent city is around the midway point and a natural resting spot, have stayed the night on several occasions when really taking our time.
My grandparents lived in Roseburg. Used to visit there almost every year.
Cool! Thank you again for a very relaxing and wonderful trip!
IDK If you have ever covered The Avenue of the Giants. But that is the real gem in that area.
The markings in the sand marking the most north property by your foot, works for me. Thanks for another great video Steve.
We visited the Muir Redwood forest! And likely drove this road to get there! Thanks Steve
I'm gonna be heading down that way on my way to see my folks. Brookings and Crescent City are always lovely places to stop for the evening. The weather looks lovely. Can't wait!
I've never been up there but i have seen the Redwood Forest
on TV a lot over the years and it is really very beautiful up
there with beautiful scenery along the coast and it is awesome
thank you for the tour and telling the history of it Thank You.🌞🇺🇲
Glad you enjoyed it.
Just spent a week at Jed Smith State Park last week and it is truly a magical place.
