Basil's "what??" after Mrs. Richards says "I'm talking to you Watt" has me in stitches every time, he's genuinely so confused
Joan Sanderson's portrayal as"Mrs Richards" is absolutely brilliant!
Yes she is
Couldn't agree more. Playing the straight/dumb character against Cleese and Booth (who get most of the funny lines) is a big ask, and she's absolutely brilliant here. Her comic timing is spot-on.
I find it hilarious she still calls him what 😂
‘What?’
I heard that she was actually the complete opposite of Mrs. Richards in real life and felt bad for being so mean to everyone, but John Cleese, who was a good friend, told her that's exactly why he wanted her for the part.
"That doesn't work either" when she bangs the bell might be the most underrated line in the show
What were you saying 😂🤣🤣🤣
"🙄😤Turn it on!"
@@sebastianemond5313 What??
@@themainpotato4432 "😤😠TURN IT- *✏🗒Turn! It! On!* "
@@sebastianemond5313I can't read that. I need my glasses 🤣
Her expressions when Polly is talking to her about the paper In the lounge and wanted plain ones or ones with our address on is hilarious Joan Sanderson was perfect for the role 💋
This has to be the funniest thing ever. YOU try and watch a marathon of this without injuring yourself.
Watched it during the stay at home. Felt good to laugh like that
If you've ever worked in retail, you'll have met a Mrs Richards.
15 years in customer service. They're not as common as everyone makes them out to be, but they are definitely out there. As a rough estimate, I'd say about one every couple weeks. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, only once every couple of months. Ofcourse, experiences vary and other places may see them more often.
arguably, one of the finest episodes of Fawlty Towers, Mrs Richards and Basil's interaction was sublime 😂😂😂
Am I the only one who likes how Mrs Richards says “IN THE LOUNGE?!”
The pure outrage in her voice always makes me laugh hysterically 😂
I love the bit later also, Fawlty just moves his mouth silently to her until she turns it on, then shouts. Sybil wasn't happy
Genius writing and acting.
Fawlty towers was the best show ever made wish more were done
This the best episode by far !! Joan Sanderson just walks away with it.
"ON. YOUR. HEA...ohhhh!" 🤣🤣
-Manager,Manager!
-Yes.Testing,Testing!
I just love John Cleese😁😁
I love this. I could watch it over and over again and still laugh at it.
My fave episode
She was a great guest star.
Marvelous show.
Mrs Richards was brilliant.
Mrs Richards is not a battleaxe. She is THE battleaxe.
Legendary part
Brilliant acting
Mrs Richards was the best character in the whole series The dialogue between her and Basil was hilarious 😂 😃
I like the Waldorf salad guy 🥗
@Simon0 He is an excellent character As is the actor 👏
@@mikeowen7526 can't go wrong with Fawlty towers in general 🙂
@@Simon0 Definitely Mr Hutchins and Mr Johnson 2 other great characters 👍
@Simon0 Bruce Boa He usually played straight roles
Genius episode.
The look on Mrs Richards’ face when Polly asks “How many sheets?” 😅
Lol Connie is trying not to laugh
I saw that too it's hularious😂
Oh God I just pissed myself🤣🤣🤣 Nurse can I get some oxygen over here🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Where? 😁
@@Olivia-bs5wj during the last ten seconds or so of the video
Leaves me in Stitches watching this 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Joan Sanderson as the Snobby Mrs Richardson is hilarious along with John Cleese as Basil Fawlty ,Can't Fawlt this series 🤣🤣🤣🤣
*Mrs. Richards:* Are you blind? They were on my head all the whole time, didn't you see?
*Polly:* Yes!
*Mrs Richards:* Didn't God give you eyes?
*Polly:* Yes, but I don't use 'em 'cause it wears the batteries out.
Nice comeback!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Polly turns the tables well
Mr Watt aged 40
"She said people use it in the lounge!" LOL
Joan Sanderson...probably one of the greatest one-off side characters of a sitcom ever.
This show still makes me laugh even after seeing every episode multiple times. The comedic timing and writing is legendary.
People always say The Germans is the best episode but this has always been #1 for me. The Mrs. Richards and Dragonfly stories are brilliant and hilarious
I love it when Mrs. Richards rings the bell to call the manager and Basil comes in saying “Testing, testing”. No wonder Basil collapses near the end of the programme when the vase seller mentions The name “Mrs. Richards!”. She was the perfect guest from hell!
I'm talking to you what
WHAT?
ARE YOU DEAF? I SAID I'M TALKING TO YOU!!!! 😂
"I'm talking to you Watt"
0:31 Polly: How many sheets?
Mrs. Richards: Looks around in disgust
Every day I discover more jokes in this show that I never noticed before...
I love the delayed laughter of the audience at 1:26
Funniest part is the conclusion of this exchange, Manuel with the 22 rolls of toilet paper. This would be a better clip if it was the full scene
This is the best episode xD
Yes, I like it even more than The Germans.
@@lancasterII my fav scene is when she is complaining about the view xD
It's my favourite episode, definitely! So great!
I loved it too, but Basil the Rat is even better
Still pure class acting from mid 1970-ties wow and still so funny! Hahahaha!
Classic Joan ,Also brilliant in Please Sir
Mrs Sanderson was a brilliant actrice. I fully agree! ❤
Fawlty Towers is the best show even is from the 70s !
"C K What" it was a tiny moment but it kept coming back and it got more and more funny the more it did lol
I love how she’s fully prepared to fight polly
Mrs Rickards is BEST 🤣😂😂🤣😂
Excellent sketches. I can't stop laughing even though I've seen them many times.
Connie was trying to keep a straight face
Basil: She thought you wanted to write.
Mrs Richards: Wanted a fight? I'll give her a fight.
Yet she heard Polly's questions about the paper, well enough to be outraged.
This show was gold
This is my favorite episode, probably one of the few where one ends up rooting for Basil to win out over this ol' sow.
(Ms. Sanderson, the actress playing Mrs. Richards though, as I understand it, was a truly delightful woman in life, no sarcasm.)
I heard rumour that Joan Sanderson rejected the part of Mrs Richards several times because she felt Mrs Richards were the absolute opposite to her in real life but John Cleese(who were friend with Joan)convinced her at the end.
Mrs Richards your glasses are there!
There? Who put them in there?
@@haydenstock21 No No there on your….’On your…..ugghhhhhahhhh!!!!’
I can't stop laughing 😂😂
"That doesn't work either". One of my all time favourite Fawlty Towers jokes and nobody laughs...
I heard the audience laughing even if their reaction was delayed.
"Turn it on!"
@@Jackomac43 Unfortunately it was probably "canned laughter, " a recording of laughter, added later.
My favourite is a brat of a child rudely complaining about the food there. His mother explains to Fawlty that her child is very clever but rather highly strung and Fawlty responds with: "yes, yes, he should be".
@@worrywart1311 Plus the wrong shaped chips. "Mickey Mouse shape? Smarties shape? Amphibious landing craft shape? Poke-in-the-eye shape?"
The best👏👏👏😁
True magic don’t know why I find this funnier now than I did when it was first broadcast ‼️
She played the part of an old dragon well.....sour old trout!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha
"That doesn't work either. What were you saying just now?"
"Turn it ON!"
@@ChrisManley1994 "What?"

@@ChrisManley1994 "I can't read that, I need my glasses. Where are they?"
@@samalvey8168 The way Basil just gets increasingly more frustrated is fantastic! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great performance by Joan Sanderson!
Easily one of the funniest moments in this show’s history!
Fabulous
Hilarious 😅
“I can’t read that I need my glasses” 💀
Damn man Fawlty Towers is too fcking funny im in tears with all these episodes lmao 😂😂😂😂
As a self employed person i can feel Basil's pain, on the odd occasion i have to deal with customers just like Miss Richards, and they are normally middle-aged snobs.
Brilliant acting.
They could have let her "give her a fight" but judging what happened to the dog in another episode, she'd have fared less well than the spoon man.
Comedy gold.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Joan Sanderson died in 1992, aged 79.
I’m talking to you, Watt.
What?
It’s like talking to my mother.
I like the way the bell sounds rickety - like on one of the old buses - ding ding. It would be funny if they had given her a box of that awful tracing paper stuff (like at school), and she had come down later again - even more angry that she got absolutely nowhere with it.
😂 keep it in the lounge 😂
Easily the best episode within the 12
Poor King Harold 😂😂
Mrs. Richard and...um...the guy Bruce Boa plays in "Waldorf Salad" are the only two characters I can think of that are perfect matches for Basil, by which I mean that in all of their scenes together, I find myself saying, "Yep, these people deserve each other."
Christ on a bike, I can relate to this! I currently work as a booking / admin assistant for a municipal transportation service, and I often find myself dealing with customers who are practically deaf. So I sit there and practically shout into my headset, and I still get nothing but "what? what?" in return. Add to the fact that I work from home and during nights, so I've had many a bollocking from my neighbours on the subject of my screaming in the middle of the night........
Joan Sanderson was a brilliant actress - can you imagine what she would think of rappers?
😂"He says he wants a fight? I'll give him a fight!"
Is Connie Booth 'corpsing' at around 1:36, I wonder?
2:11 she was close to breaking it ..
God bless this lady actress she is amazing……only ever 12 episodes but they pump out 6 seasons of American crap….Connie and John should have been taken in by the British government and had a contact 6 episodes a year for 10 years.
Way ahead of It's time
Your glasses are in there
"ON YOUR HEAD!"
2.09 see Connie Booth(Polly) trying not to laugh.
Manager- C. K. What!

Endearing battleaxe
I have both series on dvd....uncensored! Offers?
I know a younger woman who’s deaf, and needs glasses; fortunately she’s much more pleasant to be around.
Manager Manager
This is like a replay of when I sometimes talk to my disabled parent.
Stay positive with Sherpa 🤩😜😒🤬🤭🙏😛😜👻😊🇬🇧🧡🧐😭😛😂
You didn't say lavatory paper to Polly for a start. If you smoke clearly enough nicely and Mrs Richard you would have got what you want instantly. The great stupid old bint.
I’m talking to you what
What???
No it's "I'm talking to you Watt"
Mrs Richards mistaken the manager as Mr CK Watt after talking with Manuel
Wanted to fight? I’ll give her a fight alright
Lol
She would have made a great Lady Bracknell.
Who put them over there
Would you like some of ours? lol
