Lol just noticed that right after the warning about staying away from windows and everyone turns to look at them, Jim starts moving in sync with humphry... he is trying to make sure Humphrey will take the bullet lol.
Little touches like this are amusing on rewatch.
He would have loved Sir Humphrey taking the bullet...

Being stabbed in the leg with the end of a stick was a reference to the Bulgarian Georgi Markof dissident killed by the Bulgarians after being jabbed by an assailant on Waterloo Bridge in 1978. The jab left a small poisoned ball in his leg that did for him.
They should have included his "Ministers are expendable" speech before this scene
when the threat was over Hacker was of two minds, one being the threat to his life, the other, that he was no longer important enough to assassinate, the latter seemed to bother him the most.

‘Course you don’t’ line gets a big laugh. This is why there’s a place for studio audiences in sitcoms. That laugh makes that line even funnier.
The Special Branch man was Graham Garden. One of "The Goodies" for those of us old enough to remember. One of the funniest men in Britain!

.....it's a little weird how pragmatic this actually was. So many TV series do potential assassinations wrong.

I’ve seen this episode several times over the decades but only now recognized Graeme Garden, one third of the Goodies, as Commander Forrest.
This was a great episode, a timeless show
The Commander seems more scary than the real assassin for the 3 old boys 😁😆

There was a time when all of this was quite shocking. And seeing a person with a gun - you would indeed react the way Jim does. It feels ridiculous to call the 80s an age of innocence yet looking back...
That's how a real non-military person would react.
Us kids under 12 were just thinking "hm, rather small for a gun"
then we would rewatch "First Blood" cheering at the finale when Rambo is demolishing the police precinct with an M-60 machinegun.
That's kind of true to an extent. I'm in the U.S., and some states here have what are called "open carry" and/or "conceal carry" laws, meaning a citizen, with a permit of course, can carry a firearm.
Some states either don't offer it, or are very difficult to obtain one.
For instance, in the state I live in, California, it is very difficult to obtain one, even if you are a cop or military wanting to carry on your off time, or in retirement.
So in states like California, people are not accustomed to seeing people walk around carrying guns. But, when I lived in Nevada, which is an "open carry" state, it was actually fairly common to see people with side arms.
I lived in Nevada in the Las Vegas region. I'm very pro second amendment. But even I was a little shocked at first, being a native Californian, as I was not used to seeing anyone other than cops openly carrying guns.
My point being is that I think it's just a culture shock, than anything to do with "innocence" of a time. The British do not have an equivalent of our second amendment, and even cops don't carry them for the most part.
So I can see how that would be very shocking to a Brit.

I have friends who have gone to America and used shooting ranges. That really freaks me out. It is becoming such a normalised thing that civilians are trained to use guns.

what''s also funny is that later, when Jim finds out that the Special Branch has determined that he isn't enough of a "high-profile" target for assassination, Jim is conflicted - on the one hand he is relieved that there isn't a thread, but on the other hand his ego is bruised because he's just not that important :)

Yes, that's what this line is referencing. The murder of Georgi Markov happened in 1978 and this show was screened on 16 December 1982.

After this car crash of a security briefing, jim is understandably more terrified and scared for his life, than he was after finding out he was on a terrorist death list.
I suspect that "Thank you Bernard!" moment at 0:47 was not scripted, just actor sat too long and scene was improvised.

I know we can buy this great show on here or on dvd 📀 but why don't you bbc put it on normal TV, might be worth paying the license fee tax then, and I'm sure that the blind, who have to pay a licence tax would love to listen to this show
