Thank you for another great episode about the Shetland Trader! I have followed your work in various videos and books for a number of years so was really pleased to see that you're now doing your own podcasts since you have so much knowledge and experience to share. Looking forward to your next episode!
Thank you for sharing the history of the Stetland Trader and your mom. A beautiful remembrance of how it all began. My knitting needles are patiently waiting for so many upcoming patterns of yours that you shared here. Fingers crossed for a Vair KAL.
Lovely episode again❤, looking forward to the release of ”Blåsippa” on Ravelry. Would be so interesting to know more about your mother, was she trained as a designer ? Everything you showed from logo, brochures to designs are so stylish and timeless.
Oh the dress is so beautiful! I want the Audrey vest pattern. That's Swedish for blue anemone or flower! All of this was so wonderful! I am in love with Shetland ... and Scotland too. thank you! You mum must have been fun.
I’ve heard you talk a bit about your family history in interviews, but I loved this fascinating deeper dive! Looking forward to hearing more about it. I’ve been hesitant to make myself a vest, because I can’t decide if I’d actually wear it, but your Audrey vest and stranded sneak peak are very tempting!
Was really cool hearing about The Shetland Trader, amazing you've managed to get your hands on some of her designs all these years later. Hoping to see you in the Wairarapa, I'm lucky to live just over the hill in Upper Hutt. Fingers crossed I can get a ticket 😊
Yes you definitely should be doing this, you are so great at it. Loved hearing your family stories and the story behind The Shetland Trader. I am off to New Zealand in two weeks, my first visit but will be home again in Texas mid March. Enjoy your trip
Wow what a very talented family, those jumpers have certainly lasted a long time but please my heart missed a beat when you threw them 😢 . Still mesmerised by the art work beautiful, did your Grandma paint it.❤
Great podcast! What a treasure to have some of your mum’s old designs. It’s amazing how relevant they still are 50+ years later. Timeless! Very excited that I was able to snag a spot at one of your workshops at the Yarnery in Feb. very much looking forward to it. 🤩
Hallo from New Zealand! Great episode, so interesting. I have your Shetland Trader book and plan to knit Vair this year. I finished Blåsippa last week, it’s my all time favourite knit!
Thank you very much for such a heartfelt episode. The timeless designs are beautiful and your mum would be proud to see them reintroduced to knitwear lovers worldwide. It was good to see progress on the vests too. Keep up the good work, Eileen
I look forward to getting a notification that you have a new podcast. I would knit the flower name sweater, Audrey vest and the sweater you are wearing would make a gorgeous tanktop/ vest too. I could listen to you for hours so please chat away. Love everything you do
Dear Gudrun, thank you again for your inspiring podcast. And for the story of the name „Shetland Trader“. Before I thought, „trader“ in this case is a synonym for „dealer“ and the name refers to you being a dealer for Shetland wool in the US. (What fits also, I think.) But going back to a ship-name and to the Shetland roots is great. - Best wishes - Gabi
🎉I do , I bought the book right away, born in 1970, it’s a treasure! I love the Vair, and it’s my absolute dream knit, 🧶, I love the book, 📕, I have knit the snaraness, out of my most treasured yarn from stash, homespun Qiviut, from my weaving teacher, from her trip to the arctic, she is no longer with us, but had a very great long life. Then I knit the Tarra, last winter, with wool I naturally dyed with foraged mushrooms. 🍄🟫 I love the book and your pattern writing! And can’t wait to make the Vair one day, just a bit intimidated as I am a novice knitter! Thanks for sharing, and thanks Wendy!😊
The history of your Mum and the Shetland Trader is fascinating and I enjoy seeing your finished projects and works in progress. I look forward to your podcast.
You are so interesting and so much history in your family. All those knits that are still so beautiful. I really enjoy your podcast and look forward to the next podcast! Have a great week!
It was interesting to hear the story of your Mom's history with knitting. It is great that you were gifted those samples and that you are going to design and write those into modern knitting patterns.
Every episode gets better and better. Love seeing the vintage brochures from the Shetland Trader. I graduated high school in the early 70s. The styles bring back so many memories. Keep up the good work😊
Lovely to hear about the history of the Shetland Trader. I love the idea of a Vair vest. Right now I’m wearing a shawl from your book #3. It’s cold here in Seattle but not as cold as in Massachusetts. Thanks for sharing your mom’s knitwear.
So interesting to hear your mum’s story and heartwarming to see some of her garments finding their way back to you. I’ve had the Audrey pattern for years and didn’t knit it because I decided it was too fitted for me. I only realised in your last episode that I had had an update for a less fitted version! I am really liking the vest version too, and think it would be very wearable. I’ll have to re-visit the pattern. Sometimes with all the new patterns catching our eye, we forget the lovely ones we already have in our library. 💕
My grandmother was a crafter: knit, crochet, crewel, sewist, beadwork, and any other tangential craft. My grandfather also: lapidary, fly fishing/fly tying, photography w own developing room, wood work, metal work… I’ve always wondered if she had brochures/pamphlets from Shetland Trader. As a 20-year old, I was amazed that Grandma could “just look at a sweater” and knit the thing. I still have an orange cardigan sweater w cables + seed st she made for me when I was in 5th grade (we shall not mention how long ago THAT was…ahem). I, too can now just look at a stitch/texture pattern and knit … Thank you for my own memory lane side trip! I’m thoroughly enjoying your channel & learning more about wool, old & new patterns, and all things adjacent!!
So enjoyable to watch! Loved hearing about the history of those beautiful jumpers and your Mum’s business. How wonderful that you have some original pieces in your collection. Your travel plans sounds so exciting.
I am so glad you have begun this videocast. The vest you are planning to release after testers are finished knitting it will definitely be on my needles. I enjoyed hearing about ow the Shetland trader began. Thank you.
Oh my goodness. This story warmed my heart. I’m sure it has warmed your heart too -sharing the story and your journey. I enjoyed this SO much. Especially when you were able to see and then have two of your mum’s sweaters. I’m in love with that design! I’m going in search of that book! Thank you so much for sharing with all of us. 🥰. A knit a long, yes!
So interesting - really enjoying your podcasts ❤ Several people from my knit group are knitting Blasippa at the moment - I am just finishing the back - so excited to work on it !!
I’m really enjoying your episodes. Your mother was very creative and enterprising! I also like learning about your journey into the history of Shetland knitting.
Love the family tradition ❤ I have been knitting around two years and have always thought your designs were stunning! I need to just take the plunge and dive in. I was sitting here thinking…. wow those sweaters still look like new and then you mentioned it 😂 I have enjoyed every episode.
Great episode! I enjoyed hearing more about your mom and her business. Loved seeing the photos of you and your siblings in her designs. And then to see the sweaters from many years ago! A true testament of Shetland yarn. See you in 2 weeks.
Loved hearing the story of your mom. Having those brochures is such a great resource. Loved seeing them. Also loved seeing the sweaters that you had been gifted. What a fabulous podcast.
Loved seeing the original brochures and original garments from the Shetland Trader! And hearing about where the name came about -- hadn't known that fact! I know you will bring more beautiful patterns no matter what -- but that children's dress -- adorable!
I have wanted these patterns for years, but just kept forgetting/adding new patterns to my queue. I just ordered this book from pompom, so excited!!! The jumper you are wearing is amazing!
Yes, blåsippa (bluesippa). Belongs to anemones family. It's a little blue flower that grows in early spring. And the patterns on your project really resemble these flowers.Beautiful🌺🌺🌺
What a delightful episode. Thank your for sharing your Mom’s story. You resemble her. Love your Audrey vest and look forward to buying and making one myself. Keep the kettle on and stay toasty! 😉
How lovely to hear the story of your Mom and her work. Lucky me, I found a copy of the book! Stay warm from a similarly-chilly-in-New-Hampshire knitter. 😊
Fantastic !! I really enjoyed seeing your Mum's wonderful now retro uses of traditional fair Isles patterns and designs - the inspirations for diverse patterns in contemporary knitting also abound. I have been knitting since the 70s myself and still love the idea of the maxi dresses - and dresses generally as well as the 'bib' type pinafore look which I think i must now pursue somehow ! I have really enjoyed your first pods and greatly look forward to more !
I will look for The Shetland Trader 3. I am in process with the Riggies Cardi. I love that sweater you're wearing! Such a great story of your Mum. Who taught you to knit?
Loved hearing the history with your Mom and designs. I have your book and there are so many patterns that are fun and I can’t wait to start one. Hoping you do a KAL. Also, I’ll keep an eye open for testing. Would love to test for you again! Thank you! 😎
A very emotional and family orientated episode. My Mum had dementia before she passed so there was a bit of dust in my eyes as you were talking about your Mum. I'm tempted to work on a male vest version of Vair. Can't wait for episode 4 :)
What a fascinating family history. You look so much like your Mum. Your Grandmother was certainly a talented artist. I think the talent is flowing through your DNA.
I wasn’t at Vogue Knitting NYC, so very glad you’re here! I live in Midcoast Maine, so hope one of these years to make the Boston event. See you next time!
Thank you for sharing the history of The Shetland Trader and memories of your mom. I am always interested to know more about Shetland and the knitting history. I really liked the little sweater that you wore as a child. Will you publish this pattern in one of your next books?
What an amazing and interesting family history of designing. Also never heard about someone who is designing knitwear but can’t actually knit. Kind of mind bobbling😅 Do you also have a design based on that black and white colourwork jumper that you got gifted from friends? I would love to knit that.
How interesting! I would love to see how you keep the moths away from those very precious knits. I had moths get into my Shetland wool collection and it was not good. After freezing the wool several times I went to use the yarn and found that there were several places where the yarn would just be cut short from the moths.
Such an interesting history and work your mother did. Thank you for sharing and I love your videos! You mentioned being able to release individual patterns from your books - any chance Riggies Cardigan would ever get released individually? I can’t get it off of mind after you showed it in your earlier episode!
Lovely podcast! I live right across the river from you during the winter now (in Maine the rest of the year). I am a designer and friend of Nina Machlin Dayton who is right down the road from me here. Would love to have a Western Mass designer get-together some time. Meantime - good luck with your new podcast and I will certainly be enjoying many more of them in the future. Linda

Definitely a Vair KAL!
Gudrun, Thanks for another enjoyable episode. The Fair isle vest you’re designing is gorgeous.
Thank you! I'm excited for that one!

Thanks for the interesting history on The Shetland Trader! I love your designs and look forward to the new ones you have planned!

She was a wonderful person ☺
Absolutely fascinating story, loving your episodes. And all the color history, knits, and everything. Looking forward to more 😊
I’ve heard you talk a bit about your family history in interviews, but I loved this fascinating deeper dive! Looking forward to hearing more about it. I’ve been hesitant to make myself a vest, because I can’t decide if I’d actually wear it, but your Audrey vest and stranded sneak peak are very tempting!
I'm really into the vests at the moment!

Exciting! Have a great trip!
Wow what a very talented family, those jumpers have certainly lasted a long time but please my heart missed a beat when you threw them 😢 .
Still mesmerised by the art work beautiful, did your Grandma paint it.❤
They were only landing on top of a pile of other knits ☺
Thanks for sharing your mom's knitting business journey with us
I love all the patterns in ST3 and (so far) have knit three! (Vair, Tarra, Smora). The story behind the patterns makes them that much more special.

Yay! I am going to get a KAL going for Vair for sure!

Great episode! You have to bring that little pullover back. It’s so accessible and I feel very trendy now. ❤️
Do you mean the the little kid's smock in gradient colors?
So enjoyable to watch! Loved hearing about the history of those beautiful jumpers and your Mum’s business. How wonderful that you have some original pieces in your collection. Your travel plans sounds so exciting.

I’m really enjoying your episodes. Your mother was very creative and enterprising! I also like learning about your journey into the history of Shetland knitting.
I loved seeing the original Vair while you were wearing the new one you designed. Have a great trip to NZ! I’ll be watching for the vest test knit.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the sample did actually fit me! Still want to knit another one though!
@ Ever since I saw Ella's Vair vest, I have wanted one! But those sleeves on the sweater… 😍
Love the family tradition ❤ I have been knitting around two years and have always thought your designs were stunning! I need to just take the plunge and dive in. I was sitting here thinking…. wow those sweaters still look like new and then you mentioned it 😂 I have enjoyed every episode.

Fascinating, thank you for sharing 😊.
loved hearing about the Shetland Trader and getting a sneaky peek of your new vest!
Great episode! I enjoyed hearing more about your mom and her business. Loved seeing the photos of you and your siblings in her designs. And then to see the sweaters from many years ago! A true testament of Shetland yarn. See you in 2 weeks.
So many great photos of us swaddled in shetland wool as wee bairns!
Loved hearing the story of your mom. Having those brochures is such a great resource. Loved seeing them. Also loved seeing the sweaters that you had been gifted. What a fabulous podcast.
I'm so glad my mum kept all those things!
Loved seeing the original brochures and original garments from the Shetland Trader! And hearing about where the name came about -- hadn't known that fact! I know you will bring more beautiful patterns no matter what -- but that children's dress -- adorable!
That vest! ❤ enjoyed the podcast and the history. My father had dementia and oh how I regretted the conversations we didn’t have.
That's the hard part for sure.
Can't wait to hear more. I'd love to see that little dress. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story.❤
I'm eagerly looking forward to getting that little dress and will definitely share when it gets here!
Oh Gudrun - that vest you're working on looks like it's going to be amazing!!!! Very excited for that! Stay warm!!!

I will look for The Shetland Trader 3. I am in process with the Riggies Cardi. I love that sweater you're wearing! Such a great story of your Mum. Who taught you to knit?
A school teacher on the west coast of Scotland!

Love the idea of a male vest version of Vair! I'll certainly be digging in deeper to the garments from the book in Episode 4.
What a fascinating family history. You look so much like your Mum. Your Grandmother was certainly a talented artist. I think the talent is flowing through your DNA.
I am very lucky to be surrounded by a talented family!
My Vair is a Christmas sweater. I loved knitting it so much that I need to knit one I can wear outside of the holiday season. ❤
Ooo fun! I'd love to see a pic! Where could I find it?
I wasn’t at Vogue Knitting NYC, so very glad you’re here! I live in Midcoast Maine, so hope one of these years to make the Boston event. See you next time!

I don't currently for that one but it's on my list to do something similar!
Beautiful ❤
Wonderful history. Would you consider a poster of your grandmother’s illustrations. Wonderful to frame for my creative corner. Please. 🙏
Oh gosh! Not sure!
Love your podcast - thank you!
How interesting! I would love to see how you keep the moths away from those very precious knits. I had moths get into my Shetland wool collection and it was not good. After freezing the wool several times I went to use the yarn and found that there were several places where the yarn would just be cut short from the moths.

I am a designer and friend of Nina Machlin Dayton who is right down the road from me here. Would love to have a Western Mass designer get-together some time. Meantime - good luck with your new podcast and I will certainly be enjoying many more of them in the future. Linda
Thanks for sharing!
❤
Oh - how talented your Mum was - even without being a knitter herself.
I just love the original brown seventies version of Vair. Would it be totally rude to ask you to propose colours based on the Spindrift colour shade card to mimic it? 🙏
I think that's a great idea! I'll do that in the next episode!
@ THANKS ❤️
My hair is now white, but the women in your family look just like the women in my family!
Do any of your siblings knit?
Not really. My sister has done a little bit and my older brother learned as a kid in Shetland but mostly I knit for them!
