Who Sampled It Better? Pete Rock (Nas - The World Is Yours) or DJ Premier (Jeru the Damaja - Me or the Papes) [Ahmad Jamal - I Love Music]. Also a Swizz Beats video could be dope. I would love to see breakdowns of beats like Wild Out, MCH, All For The Love, etc.
The way you explained the Ye chop makes so much sense. Ive aways felt like that Alicia Keys record was delightfully long and couldn't figure out why. I think the way he extended the sample makes it seem like a neverending song to me. Hard to explain.
They’re both ridiculously good, and I f w the alchemist so heavily, but you don’t know my name beat is legitimately one of the best I’ve ever heard. So clean, so replayable, such an unbelievable vibe. I’m just in awe of how well it came together.
I love how each one captures a completely different mood! Kanye for Alicia: love, soulful yearning, beauty Alchemist for Evidence: reflection on life's journey, struggle and triumph Navie D: ...I'm picturing some gritty crime bars over that, not amped up type but more sinister. I could hear Benny the Butcher & Conway telling a messed up story rap. Of the first two, Kanye won. But i preferred where Navie went with it when including him.
@@NavieD A lot of these producers chop styles come from the AsR10. They all tell stories of the chops cutting off or carrying over a certain way because of the ASR’s limits. It’s nuts.
Thing about Ye is he knows how to make a hit out of using these samples. Ye may be a better overall Producer. Alchemist is better for those darker underground beats in which is what I prefer.
Idk about advanced kanye chops but i feel like these "tricks" are just from playing samples instead of programming them. When you drop samples to pads and play you find a lot of small pieces and combining on different rhythms.
Both did an amazing job . It Aint about who did it better its about who’s getting placements on projects they both got winning streaks of 20-25 years and still going .
Notegrabber is clever btw. I could see a producer using it to get notes from a sample, replay it from their plugins, then resample & manipulate that. Like imagine taking an epic synth pad sound you liked, grabbing the notes, having an orchestral strings patch play it through effects, then export chop & dirty up *that*! You could literally start with something you heard on a dance music track & end up with gangsta music 🙃
The way you added a whole new layer of instruments to the beat really reminded me of MBDTF (specifically, Devil in a new dress). By the way, those Kanye sampling methods are so freaking good. I wish he would start producing again, maybe he would slowly remember what he used to do 20 years ago...
I used to make beats in FL all my teenage years. It's so awesome and fun to see you imitate the greats and make your own fire in the software. Keep it up
Dude i knew i recognized it from somewhere. Whats crazy is I grew up listening to to Alicia keys and started listening to Gunn like 2 years ago, just now making this connection lol
One thing I have ALWAYS struggled with is adding instruments to a sample and being able to keep the notes consistent with the original sample ! You definitely put me up on something. I wish I knew about this Note Grabber thing wayyy back in '06 🤦🏾♂️
I love them just as much, but I often wonder if we look for genius in serendipity. It probably happened to you as well, trying to play chops or randomizing sounds and ending up with a dope pattern without thinking about it. I think a lot of classics are just that. It's definitely a stellar ear for sound, but I'm not sure all of it is genius or algorithm.
Navie, PLEASE make a video on The Red, Jaylibs Original version. (Or just make a Jaylib video :) ) The sample is incredible and the piano adds so much to it!
Kanye obviously. Its the phrasing in the sample and building up of R&B progressions that makes it more complex. Boom Bap for the most part doesn't require as much cord progression, bridges etc. That said Kanye stayed very close to the original song to replicate that classic 70s 80s vibe, whereas Alchemist brought into the sample into the era.
I totally agree with you the passion and soul from the original sample has presence on Kanye sampling and on the alchemist it doesn't, there is no way to say one is better or worst it just depends on taste and to me the more full and soul like final style from Kanye is superior but the Alicia keys vocals helps a lot.

It might be much harder to find where RZA Sampled his Beats. Hell he was sampling music and sounds from 70's Kung Fu Movies. Personally I think after that first WU Album He had to be living in Japan and China for a Year to get the vinyls.
This is your best work that I've heard by far. My one gripe is that the bass you added sounds really flat. Other than that, I think you actually blew this one out of the water. Good job bro ❤

This ended up being a very interesting and informative. Stem splitting sounds very useful, I also had no idea you make your own freaking VSTs. That is baller. As for the sampling... I like Kanye's beat the most because he used creative sampling techniques. Alchemist's beat is usually how I do it, keeping it simple and adding my own expressions. But you... You had the most resourceful and knowledgeable tactic when it comes to wave shaping and sound manipulation. You did way more than just sampling. I loved the reversing as well as fading in the high layer. I love automations. Like I said, very informative. I really liked this video.
This is truly some hip-hop nerd shit and i'm all for it. Wtf...didn't even know that Al used that same sample as Ye. Kudos to you my guy. I'm impressed, and if you knew who I am...that's saying alot. Well done sir. I would like to see more.
You forgot to mention Kanye’s signature bass progression. He also used the same kicks in many of those early 2000s productions. Around the 3:30 mark in the Alicia keys song the sample does not plat at all, while there’s still instrumentation. Check it out👍🏾
As a noob, I really wonder what kind of copyrights are involved by using these samples. Do you guys deal with this or you just use whatever you need and that's it?
Most people that are just making beats on UA-cam don't go through the same process as a commercial artist would, no. Having said that, the same laws do apply technically speaking.
@NavieD, great breakdown! But for your beat, everything was great, except for the drums. Something where the kicks followed your bassline a bit more might have been better 🤷🏿♂️ Maybe
