Hey Pete, (or anyone who has the knowledge to answer this)... So could you use a loop pedal with GarageBand? Like it would just record in GarageBand what would normally just be playing back on the amp? I use GarageBand and I’m trying to make videos of me playing my songs, but I want it to sound good and I have no clue how to go about this because I will have to loop a lot and I don’t want to consistently go back to my computer and stop playing in the middle of my performance (which means I would need a loop pedal.) Any help would be appreciated.
Great stuff! Seems like after six months, I still can’t get the same tone out of my amp that I’m hearing, to record on GarageBand. I try just going in using the mic/vocal setting, tried some clean amps sims. I still can’t seem to just record what I am hearing from my amp, as if I were to mic it. What is the best way to get the tone I’m hearing out of my amp and distortion pedal, to GarageBand for recording. Just sounds terrible as soon as I use the interface. 😅🎸🇺🇸 Thank you!!!
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks! 👍🏻 I’ve tried a lot of the free ones, maybe that’s the problem. Even those supposed “model” tones that people have created on Tonebridge are pretty terrible. Thought about finally getting like an STL package, hundred bucks. Or I’m actually thinking of finally getting maybe like a BOSS GT-1 multi-effects processor. Or just staying kind of old school, and completing a nice pedalboard. But so many accessories for that, and usually some noise. I guess really no way to get that great metal guitar sound without the better plug-ins. Or even IRs. I just didn’t wanna go that far with the software. Hey Pete! I’m just wondering if I would be able to record my bass with my real pedalboard into GarageBand? I have a TC Helicon Go Guitar Pro and have been plugging just my bass into it as I’m not sure if I’m able to connect my pedalboard as well. I’m worried that it might cause some damage to the interface or something. My pedalboard is powered with an MXR iso brick So, would I be able to plug my bass through my board and into the interface and plug that into my iPhone/iPad? Awesome video btw! :)
Hey there. So, yes - however you do need to be careful. If your pedalboard sends a standard instrument out then it can go straight in to an interface via the instrument input. If it sends a line level signal you’ll need to ensure your interface supports that and is set accordingly. I’ve never caused actual damage even when I’ve sent a line level signal in to an instrument level input, but it’s still a good idea to avoid it.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Hey Pete! Thank you so much for getting back to me. Okay great. I’m not too sure if my pedalboard sends a line level signal or a normal instrument out? However, I thought I could feel a small sort of static feeling when touching the guitar so I quickly turned it off. It may just have been me being paranoid and it was nothing as I was definitely getting a signal. But, yeah I thought I felt a strange, almost static feeling when playing my bass. Hey Pete, awesome content from your channel! Just wanted to ask if you've used the iRig 2 for running pedals into an iPad into GarageBand in recent times to see if it still works? Don't know whether to get this for $70 or the iRig HD 2 for $200. Many thanks from Brisbane 🙌
Hey there mate. So in my experience the HD versions have much lower noise and better audio quality. The iRigs that use the headphone jack are okay but don’t handle distortion and fuzz very well.
I do this exact same thing with the Line 6 firehawk HD. Firehawk plugged into Scarlet 2i2, then 2i2 plugged into the iPad or iPhone. Works great and I get killer tone!
Awesome! Yeah, I need to try some of my other effects processors and experiment more now that I have an easy workflow to get my external hardware connected.
Pete Johns it took me a min to figure out how to connect the Scarlet 2i2 but once I did, it changed everything. I play a 7 string tuned down to F and wasn’t getting even close to a tone that worked with the iRig. I figured out the 2i2 with the firehawk and haven’t been happier. Recording on the go with all the tone and tweaking my little hart desires lol
I liked what you were doing with the 2 pedals. Gave me some ideas for trying new tones with the dry signal going into the pedals and let the pedals do the work with nothing else helping it. Would help me get some raw, unfiltered , dirty sounds
Hello Pete, you have amazing videos and thank you for this demo! Is there some latency when you use this irig? does it also work if I use a scarlett 2i2?
Hey there. There is a little latency but it is not too much of an issue. Yes you can use any audio interface as long as you can power and connect it. ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html
It sounds like the monitoring has a little bit of delay from when you are playing guitar in this video. I have been thinking about buying an interface to record my instruments on an iPad or iPhone. Will there always be a delay from what you play to what you hear from your headphones because if so that would make me not even want to try this kind of setup.
I haven't used Tonebridge much at all sorry so haven't done any videos. I generally use the STARK amp sim when recording in GarageBand, or just the GarageBand amps. ua-cam.com/video/F_d0nTuloS8/v-deo.html
thanks so much! i have the exact same ds 1 and I just bought Irig HD 2 and I got scared that i wouldnt be able to use a pedal through but now i know i can! also how come your ds 1 works without being plugged in? ive had mine for about a month and if its not plugged in it sounds very weak and the light doesnt go on. anyways thanks for the great vid
Pete Johns Thanks for the reply Pete. I just ordered a Soundcraft Notepad 5 mixer and will use that to connect to my iPad. It was basically the same price as an iRig Hd 2 so I hope that will work out.
Hey there. I don't believe so. If you use the 1/4" instrument input and make sure you start with the output low on your pedal board and the input gain low on the Focusrite, you should just be able to dial it up until you get a good level. The only major risk is that you'll send a signal that's too hot that will clip and distort, so just start with really low volumes and dial up the gain slowly.
Awesomeness. Have been thinking about something like this for a while. I don’t have an irig I only have a cable that does pretty much the same (jack into guitar, 3.5mm into iPad and has a headphone monitor socket) but doesn’t work if I put pedals through.
Nice! Yeah, the iRig or something like the Tascam iXZ is super handy for getting any audio spruce in to your iPhone or iPad. I think I need to take my own advice and try out a microphone or keyboard through some pedals!!
Can I use a Nux Solid Studio amp simulator in garage band or is this defeating the purpose ? I was planning on buying the focusrite scarlet 2i4 for a interface. Best regards Joe P
Hey there. Yes, pretty much anything that you can plug in via USB (if it is class compliant) will work with iOS, so most things can be connected and used.
Hey there. Yep, you can use it as an audio processor if you have an audio interface connected that accepts input and output. Check this video to see how - ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html
Hey there! Thank you my friend. Yep, heaps of videos with acoustic recording techniques here on the channel. This is one I streamed yesterday which covers a lot of the techniques I use - ua-cam.com/video/w-FUMFA-72I/v-deo.html There’s links in the description to other videos about acoustic recording too.
You can indeed use a clean signal if you’re using other outboard gear. This video is for vocals but the principle is the same / ua-cam.com/video/rXios5YTdRc/v-deo.html
What if I use all my pedals with a wall adapter? I have mic mechanic for condensor mic AC powered into iphone, is that safe or do I have to use a battery?
Hmmmmm..... haven’t personally tried it so can’t make any guarantees. If you are just sending audio though I can’t see that it would be a significant risk?
Pete Johns So I thought about it and kind of answered my own question. So those adapters are usually converting to 9 V and then sending that voltage to the pedal. Otherwise it would need a 120 V battery which wouldn’t happen. So 9 V battery or nine volt adapter that converts it. So I tried this with my condenser microphone to my mic mechanic pedal with the XLR to 3.5 mono cable into my y cable trs to trrs and it didn’t work.
I connect a 3.5mm cable from my IPad’s 3.5 mm output into a wireless HP to hear my guitar playing. I guess I could plug the cable to my guitar ampli. I’ll try it tomorrow.
@@PeteJohnsMusic It worked! All my pedals’ effects go to the amp and I can record my playing at the same time on GarageBand. I think I should do a video on this!
@@PeteJohnsMusic yup I've subscribed. I'm really looking forward to recording my own songs on garageband so I will definitely be coming to your channel for tutorials
Pete Johns I’m obviously an idiot lol, I had literally just turned my iPad off, was gonna leave it for a few days cause I was getting frustrated. Thank you for replying so quickly, and for making this channel a thing, it wasn’t hard to find and I’ve no reason to look any further, you have all my answers lol.
External effects are easy if you want them on the way in to the amp aim but a little harder if you want them as a “send/receive” setup. You essentially would need to “re-amp” your original signal out of GarageBand, seen it through your effects processor, then back in to a second track to record. Some mixers and interfaces will allow for this but it gets messy. Another option if you have two devices is to use one device as a dedicated “amp” (say, an iPhone), and plug your guitar in to an interface connected to this device, send the signal out and in to your effects processor, and finally back to another iOS device (like an iPad) to record. You can see why folks tend to use the built in plugins in GarageBand instead! The delay in the GB effects is actually pretty solid and very customisable ua-cam.com/video/JtqTD22QUrI/v-deo.html
Pete, I may try the second option. I want to record my entire chain, and the drives are easy. I have the good old irig mono, into my iPad, then I’ll come out to my Flashback Triple Delay, into Polara reverb, these are effects I’ve fine tuned. After that’s I’ll use the UR22 into the iPhone to record. Recording in an apartment building is tricky.
I have always wanted to try this and see if it works, but I’ve honestly been too lazy to grab my pedal and hook it up to my iPad 😂😂 so thank you for making this video 😂😂
Haha! I hear you. This has been on my video list for about a year but every time I looked at it I thought "man, I have to find two guitar cables AND my pedals, and then plug them in!?!?" 😅
Hi there my friend. What I did in this video is use the screen recording audio from the iPad for the guitar playback and then mixed this with my microphone in editing. Here’s a video showing all about screen recording. ua-cam.com/video/xpvW196aA2o/v-deo.html
Depends on the effects I’m using and the interface. But all in all not very much. That being said, I record mostly rhythm parts and nothing particularly precise or fast, so if you were shredding on some lead licks you might notice a little latency.
Hi, can anybody tell me why, when using a physical distortion pedal, my sound kind of fades in and out? Like volume swells? It doesn’t happen with other pedals like flange, pitch shift, or wah. It happens with a multi effects unit and a Boss Metal Zone.
Good question? Haven’t noticed this personally. There may be some sort of limiting being applied to protect from clipping creating a pumping sound? I explain this concept in this video / ua-cam.com/video/X1xlFO5NZvU/v-deo.html
Hey Jeremy. My best suggestion is to use a drum loop or auto drummer instead of a click track. This way if you do get some bleed it sounds much more natural. I also made a video recently about this with some other tips - ua-cam.com/video/EcI1tPC4P34/v-deo.html

Thanks for the tutorial, Pete. Very useful :)
Very welcome.
Pete have you done a video on how to use Tonebridge in GarageBand please mate ?
I haven't used Tonebridge much at all sorry so haven't done any videos. I generally use the STARK amp sim when recording in GarageBand, or just the GarageBand amps. ua-cam.com/video/F_d0nTuloS8/v-deo.html
Can you hook up a guitar processor like this?
Can we stack as many pedals as we want or is it limited to one or two pedals?
Hey there. Yep, just be very carefully not to overload the gain, so keep the dials low when you first connect.
@@PeteJohnsMusic what will happen if there is too much gain? And can I use my amplifier as the speaker? Instead of headphones
Hi mate, can I also put an effect Pedal between my Guitar and my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2? So without using the iRig adapter
Yup sure can. Any interface that has an instrument input will work either directly or through pedal(s).
thanks so much! i have the exact same ds 1 and I just bought Irig HD 2 and I got scared that i wouldnt be able to use a pedal through but now i know i can! also how come your ds 1 works without being plugged in? ive had mine for about a month and if its not plugged in it sounds very weak and the light doesnt go on. anyways thanks for the great vid
Hey there. I use a 9v battery in the DS-1. If you unscrew and pop the top up you can install a battery.
@@PeteJohnsMusic There is already a battery in my ds 1 though.. Came with when purchased. Anywasy ill try changing. it. Thank for advice!
Hey. tell me, is it possible to connect a guitar through a wire and then hang these effects?
Hey there. So, are you looking to connect a guitar to your iPhone/iPad? Check this video out - ua-cam.com/video/Dl88BFY0T2g/v-deo.html
Is it possible to connect a loop pedal and then the output recorded in garageband are the actual loop sound?
Hey there. I believe so. Whatever is going on and out is what is recorded and played. Ask at the GarageBand Users Facebook group if you need help.
Nice! Never thought of trying that.
It's really fun and worth trying. I want to send some keyboards and vocals through them now - time to get really experimental!
Btw, is that hum caused by the pedal also audible through the headphones? It seems very noticable to me.
Yeah. A lot depends on the interface you use too and the other residing settings. You can get things sounding much better.
Pete Johns Thanks for the reply Pete. I just ordered a Soundcraft Notepad 5 mixer and will use that to connect to my iPad. It was basically the same price as an iRig Hd 2 so I hope that will work out.
I’ve been doing this for ages easy
Nice one!! Any additional tips from your experience for getting good sounds?
Having a focusrite ipad dock if I plug my entire pedal board into it would I need any other adjustments and advice
Thank yes did go in too loudly thought this sound rubbish will try again.
Let me know how it goes!
Hey do hou prefer a irig 2 or just a irig
IRig 2 is an updated version but not much different. IRig HD is much better quality as it is digital.
Pete Johns ok ty
Can you do this with a synth, like the korg monologue?
Yup. Pretty much anything that sends audio out can go through a pedal.
Very useful tutorial, thank you so much!
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Can I use a Nux Solid Studio amp simulator in garage band or is this defeating the purpose ? I was planning on buying the focusrite scarlet 2i4 for a interface.
Best regards
Joe P
Hey there. Yes, pretty much anything that you can plug in via USB (if it is class compliant) will work with iOS, so most things can be connected and used.
Can the iPhone be turned into a pedal ??
Hey there. Yep, you can use it as an audio processor if you have an audio interface connected that accepts input and output. Check this video to see how - ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html
great vid man
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Can i use real pedal with Bias Fx or Amplitube on the ipad in the same time? Thank you.
You can. Just keep your gain and volume levels low and slowly bring it up.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Oh Really!? Thanks a lot for your advise Sir!
Pete
That is awesome man! Great video
Do you happen to have similar ideas for us acoustic players?
Hey there! Thank you my friend. Yep, heaps of videos with acoustic recording techniques here on the channel.
This is one I streamed yesterday which covers a lot of the techniques I use - ua-cam.com/video/w-FUMFA-72I/v-deo.html
There’s links in the description to other videos about acoustic recording too.
Do you HAVE to run your guitar into a GB amp sim regardless of what outboard gear you are using? No option for running just a clean signal?
You can indeed use a clean signal if you’re using other outboard gear. This video is for vocals but the principle is the same / ua-cam.com/video/rXios5YTdRc/v-deo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic thank you Sir!
Can I use my real pedal board with irig AmpliTube for live shows and recordings?
Hey there. Yup, anything you can plug through your guitar chain should work fine.
Pete Johns Got it.Thankyou
Can I plug my full pedal board into irig via my impulse response di?
You can - just keep volumes right down to make sure you don’t overcook the signal
@@PeteJohnsMusic will it sound good like how it’s meant to?
I connect a 3.5mm cable from my IPad’s 3.5 mm output into a wireless HP to hear my guitar playing. I guess I could plug the cable to my guitar ampli. I’ll try it tomorrow.
Cool. Let me know how you go. 🤘😎
@@PeteJohnsMusic It worked! All my pedals’ effects go to the amp and I can record my playing at the same time on GarageBand. I think I should do a video on this!
You’re awesome dude, thanks!
Cheers Chen. Appreciate it my friend. 🙏
Pete Johns such nice videos, greetings from Costa Rica.
Pura vida! 👍
Great video, very helpful
Thanks! I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
@@PeteJohnsMusic yup I've subscribed. I'm really looking forward to recording my own songs on garageband so I will definitely be coming to your channel for tutorials
Can I use my guitar effects pedal without the GarageBand effects? I’m not fond of the GarageBand distortion amps.
Yep. Just set up a standard clean audio recorder track instead of a guitar amp track.
Ashley King I know, Pete is a life saver.
Why do Guitar pedals look so nice vintage and classy?
The designs never really change over the years
Yeah, I’m pretty sure you could pick up a brand new DS-1 today and it would look exactly the same. Just a little less nostalgic wear and tear. 😁
I don't remember commenting this 😂🤣
George Elliot 😳😂
@@georgeelliot1493 do you remember writing Middlemarch?
Nice riffing.
Thank you my friend. 👍
How about external effects like delay, and reverb after the amp emulator. I prefer the Sunshine Drive (Orange) amp, but want my time effects after it.
The delay in the GB effects is actually pretty solid and very customisable
ua-cam.com/video/JtqTD22QUrI/v-deo.html
Pete, I may try the second option. I want to record my entire chain, and the drives are easy. I have the good old irig mono, into my iPad, then I’ll come out to my Flashback Triple Delay, into Polara reverb, these are effects I’ve fine tuned. After that’s I’ll use the UR22 into the iPhone to record. Recording in an apartment building is tricky.
I would love to see a photo/ video of this setup if and when you get it happening.
Can I use my real pedals with the iRig on my Mac in GarageBand?
that's what I wanna know. were you able to do it?
@@lawnmowerman7 Yep. It works fine for me!
I have always wanted to try this and see if it works, but I’ve honestly been too lazy to grab my pedal and hook it up to my iPad 😂😂 so thank you for making this video 😂😂
Haha! I hear you. This has been on my video list for about a year but every time I looked at it I thought "man, I have to find two guitar cables AND my pedals, and then plug them in!?!?" 😅
Thank u
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Pete Johns subscribed! :)
How we get to hear the sound when you have connected it to headphone ?
Hi there my friend. What I did in this video is use the screen recording audio from the iPad for the guitar playback and then mixed this with my microphone in editing.
Here’s a video showing all about screen recording.

@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks sir for the reply ! 😀
You’re very welcome. 👍
Do you notice any latency when you record in GarageBand?
Depends on the effects I’m using and the interface. But all in all not very much. That being said, I record mostly rhythm parts and nothing particularly precise or fast, so if you were shredding on some lead licks you might notice a little latency.
Like the t shirt. I love Big Star. Love the video too.
Thanks my friend. And thanks again! 👍
Your welcome 😀

Hi, can anybody tell me why, when using a physical distortion pedal, my sound kind of fades in and out? Like volume swells? It doesn’t happen with other pedals like flange, pitch shift, or wah. It happens with a multi effects unit and a Boss Metal Zone.
Good question? Haven’t noticed this personally. There may be some sort of limiting being applied to protect from clipping creating a pumping sound? I explain this concept in this video / ua-cam.com/video/X1xlFO5NZvU/v-deo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for replying. I checked out the video in the link, will see if it works.
I keep getting metronome in my recording using irig. Any suggestions?
Hey Jeremy. My best suggestion is to use a drum loop or auto drummer instead of a click track. This way if you do get some bleed it sounds much more natural.
I also made a video recently about this with some other tips - ua-cam.com/video/EcI1tPC4P34/v-deo.html
Pete Johns thanks Pete. Great vids.
Thanks for your kind words my friend.
You could try lower the volume a bit while recording with a metronome but its a bit hard for me since my playing is sloppy
What if i want to use the built in amps on my multieffects board instead of the amps in garageband? Is there a way to not use the amps in garageband?
Yup. Just select an audio track and use the “clean” setting under “fun”. This will give you an audio track with zero processing.
Has Apple hired you as a tutorial expert yet, if not, they’re loosing out.
Thanks my friend - very kind! They possibly wouldn't like some of my, shall we say, "honesty". 😉 So I'll remain independent for now, but never say never!
Pete Johns well maybe irig should cut you a check, eh? Lol.
Haha! If anyone from IK Multimedia is watching, I’m waiting for your call. 😄👍
The question is more like... can you get a decent sound out of it
Yeah, it with virtual amp Sims these days you tend to get better sounds more easily using those.

too much latency so that u need audio interface always
