This interview aired on Friday 3rd October 2008 on BBC One. This was around four weeks before Jonathan Ross went head first into a bucket of shit, with the Sachsgate Scandal which ruined the rest of 2008 for him, and steered his exit from the BBC by 2010.

Why does Ali get a pass off everyone for saying he doesn't like white people ? Is it I for black people to be racist ?
He kind of back tracked later in life and said some of his earlier beliefs were wrong. I think Ali gets a lot of slack because later in life he showed a lot of dignity during his illness. He did a lot of bad things in the prime of his life, he still gets called out on it now, some hate him, but his later life kind of redeemed him a bit. 30 years with that illness and he handled it like a great man, humble dignified and acknowledged his mistakes. Without that he wouldn’t be looked upon in the same way imo

Yep. He took a LOT of sh*t in the USA etc like his ppl have. Apparently, he came to the East End of London some time (during the build up to a fight or whatever). Whilst he was there a black guy tried to introduce his (white) friend to MA, MA said "..he´s not your friend!!". If the roles were switched (a white guy saying the same message to another white guy when introducing them to his black friend) he´d be called a racist, but for a black person: ´No, that´s no possible´!

The part Michael sadly missed is, Muhammad Ali emphasised & said "Not all white people are devils rather the American white man is the devil as he has slaved, lynched, raped & murdered black people for over 400 years" and why does he add such a sad angle to Muhammad Ali's life and talk about his demise, when there are so many positive chapters in his life which he seems to overlook, Michael should be honoured to have had the chance to sit opposite such a remarkable human being, a unique person who probably comes around once in a millennium or so, Michael got famous off his interviews with Muhammed Ali, he should thank MA everyday for how he catapulted his career.
Because Michael Parkinson is old and close-minded. He grew up in a time and environment where there was white supremacy. Even though it may not have been verbalised, it was felt. He couldn't handle a black man in his prime, showing self-confidence and standing up for his beliefs and not feeling inferior to people who are white. That must have been an astonishing thing for him to witness and a hard pill to swallow. That's why those initial emotions have stayed with him and have influenced his perspective of muhammad ali and that's why he liked Muhammad ali more when he was "vulnerable"(his word) ie old and when his parkinson's was kicking in. Michael has a superiority complex. In one interview I saw of him he talked about how Muhammad Ali was so stupid, he had a very low IQ and that he was a cretin who couldn't even get into the military, that's how dumb he was, and then proceeded to mention, "but that may have been because he had dyslexia." He's very passive-aggressive, but comes across as mean-spirited and racist/prejudiced. The type of person who tries to cover their prejudice and bias but nevertheless exposes their true colors themselves. I saw his interviews with muhammad ali but didn't know who he was. However, I wasn't expecting him to be like this.
Parkinson's family were poor bastards who worked down pits and didn't wash their backs because they feared it'd weaken them and they'd die in the pit. He doesn't need a dumb millionaire boxer running his mouth about how oppressed he is by all white people.
He held MA in high regard. TRULY, he has often said those interviews were where his 💜 enjoyed and appreciated.
Shame not spoken of here.

"Youre a great interviewer when you want to be." so true. Parky, Dick Cavett, Gay Byrne & even Wogans shows kinda chronicle the stars of their era, who knows , in years to come , even though less serious, Ross & Norton mightve done the same.

Parkinson is lying about the incident with Ali in 1974, he is blatantly trying to save face.
Ali got angry because Parkinson was trying to make him appear, as though he didn't know his arse from his elbow!
If you see the whole interview, Parkinson clearly had that agenda. At one point, Ali tells Parkinson, you are too small mentally, to tackle me on anything, I represent! That comment, is an indicator of the tone of the interview.
I remember my dad was furious while watching this interview. I was six and even I could see what Parkinson was trying!
He offered Ali the book, after Ali tore him a new one, not before. I watched this interview in 1974 and I've watched it dozens of times since. I like the way Ali handled him and Parkinson has never forgiven Ali for it. Check out his "tribute" when Ali died, he called Ali a cretin!
Tavy@ i was really suprised when michael parkinson didnt attend george best's funeral. A man he speaks about alot as his closest friend then doesnt even attend his funeral, saying i didnt want to see george like that i wanted to remember him as he was. At funerals parky wouldnt have seen george as he would be in a coffin wich parky knew all too well. Then said he was working in austraila and couldnt come. As if he had to work for the money. I just dont get it tbh. And neither does lots of other people, then parky writes a book about him and george. It just doesnt sit right imo. Parky could have got a flight over to britain in the 6 weeks at least before george died. To alot of people parky showed his true colours. I cant really watch him anymore. He just wants to be friends with the rich and famous. Its well known after he saw how great george was at age 17 or 18 with man utd, strait away he always searched george out to drink with him and used georges fame during the sixties to make himself more of a face. Years later in the early 1980s when george wasnt doing too well he said all his so called friends from the sixties didnt go near him. He had problems with money and was drinking and gambling any money he got. But no one went to talk to him to even ask if he was ok! The faces from him being the pop star footballer who ownend clothes shops and a night club. To 1982 when he didnt own much didnt try and get to see him. But they had no problems in finding me in 1965 and before to 1974 then i went to america in 1975 till 1982. I read that in georges autobiography "The Good The Bad And The Bubbly" in november 1990 when it came out. It is a great read. I was age 17 at the time. But i had no idea that george also had been ripped off for alot alot of money over the years by men kidding on to be friends and putting business georges way, but that means george has to put the money up first and it happend time and time again. He said he earned and lost about 3 million pounds at least, and he has never been totally skint. But there was times when he was nearly. He said he knew he could always pick up a few quid here and there. But i was thinking a guy like him should be worth a fortune even at age 44, how could he end up doing work he hated doing at times. How is that possible? Best said he hasnt a clear idea where it all went, he said he gambled alot. As in well over a million pound easy.
I agreed with Clay on race mixing. But he was racist towards whites. In his earlier days, I think towards the end he mellowed.
His views on whites in the earlier days were due to how black people were treated at that time. He mellowed when he saw things improving.
These people call him racist don’t know how the whites treated the blacks.

Please remember Christopher, Parkinson has two versions of his talk show. Version One ran from 1971-1982 and Version Two ran from 1998-2007, so he could be meaning buying the chair from either version.

Parkinson is impressive a bit like Hitchcock in the scope of his knowledge. To know as much as an expert, maybe more and to be able to converse or as in Hitch`s case, collaborate on a film....well, it takes some beating. Not many around who can do it. Less today as there`s a vast glut of cretins.

Michael Parkinson, a man who was a key part of Saturday late nights on BBC One from 1971 to 1982 with his talk show. He returned to the BBC in 1998 and rebooted his talk show, moved to ITV in 2004 and then retired in 2007. His talk show in the seventies used to air after Match of the Day on BBC One and got 13 million watching.

Michael was just jealous of Ali , Ali was quick witted and had a beautiful charisma very charming personality and Michael is just plain dull old man who loves to make up crap about people
@@rubyblue4945Ali was a great boxer, but an arrogant wanker. Even Tesco couldn't provide the vinegar for the chip he had on his shoulder! Parkinson had a very distinguished career, I highly doubt he was jealous, more frustrated by Ali's shocking attitude.
