Now, imagine if they discovered that you could hold a chord shape and strum the strings, because the strings pressed are unmuted, you can hold very weird chord shapes without the clutter.
They need to go back and demo this right now.
That's kind of how an autoharp works!
Or if thediscoverd they can use the same cord shape anywhere on the keyboard major always equals major 2nd Inversion minor always equals 2nd inversion minor. Just jump up or over to change the root.
@@S4int__ i mean isn't a harpejji basically just an autoharp without keys?

You're really stricking gold with this show!
The concepts, the effective editing, the visuals, the funny little "house band" remarks and, of course, those great musical experiments are all making for an excellent moment.
Thanks for all that, and long live Sonic Boom! =)
Thanks so much! We wanna keep it going forever!
@@andrewhuang Yeah! 🔥🔥🔥
LONG LIVE SONIC BOOM
What?! This show sucks, but they've gotten extremely lucky with the episodes so far. Even if they keep getting lucky with the rest of the series, there's no way to prove that the episodes weren't good in spite of the show!
Is the show called „sonic boom“?
'Best friends hanging out' is the ultimate UA-cam genre. And holy crap, Rob's super power to figure out how to play any instrument is always wondrous to behold.
If it's got strings he can play it for sure.
@@AmazingMrMe123 It doesn't even need strings! He figured out how to play that glass/water instrument pretty damn quickly.
@@peterelfman that's such a funny instrument. I'm not sure what category it even is.
He seems to mostly stay away from winds and brass. Personally same, i like being able to breath whenever I want when I play music.
@@AmazingMrMe123 You're right, he did struggle with the saxophone. But woodwinds and brass require lip training to even make basic sounds; knowledge of music theory won't help if all you can do is make the thing honk like a goose. :D
@@peterelfman hes a drummer too
I love how much vibing happens when you're with a friend - so many affirmative YEAHS lol this is the official instrument of midwest emo
Yeah
@@davidsteinhour5562 yeah
It's the best of jamming with friends to be honest. IMO if you're just doing it for fun / not stressed about a live show or album release or something (unless that's your goal) - but for me - music is a enjoyable hobby. Sharing that with people and feeling the moment it just clicks and is fun for everyone - no matter the genre or instrument - this is awesome.
Really? I’ve never heard this in Tiny Moving Parts.
I love how quickly this went from "This is the first time I've touched this instrument" to "We are now jamming together and it actually sounds good"
we need a "half hour of harpejji" album from rob!
Yes please!
(And Andrew, preferably together 😊)
Andrew, Rob, you made something seriously special with this show. I freaking love every episode, please keep going with this!
How is that funk jam so good?! This is their first time playing this instrument and they're killing it!
Also, Rob's "Andrew Huang the Cyborg" song was too good 😂
Decades of guitar experience helps 😄
11:24 MOD-U-LAR SYNTHS ARE YOUR PASS-PORT
I’m definitely feeling some King Crimson here :-)… much more of a lunge than a Chapman stick
Could have watched this jam session for hours. I was sad when the video ended.
The fact that you guys can pick up an instrument that's entirely new to both of you and immediately make things that sound good really highlights your depth of musical skill! Love this new show!
It helps that the harpejji is one of the most intuitive and easy to learn instruments
Music theory
It’s called noodling, or improvising. Plus they are seasoned musicians.
@@IdoN_Tlikethis That's true, and since Rob has picked up even much more unintuitive instruments and got something decent within a few minutes this makes a lot of sense.
Well that’s the thing, it’s not entirely unfamiliar. Knowing how a stringed instrument of this type is fretted can go a long way, even if “true” skill on the instrument is lacking you can make nice sounds. Guitar knowledge can be fairly useful on a harpejji but also not directly applicable in its implementation.
I really hope that at the end of this series we have a behind the scenes of the house band. Can't believe that they weren't laughing their ass off all the time
Piano vibrato is REAL and nothing you say can convince me otherwise!
Andrew had a video about a month ago about the "Expressive E Osmose" with vibrato keyboard keys - which was probably recorded after this because he didn't mention it here - which you might find interesting.
The Osmose is sick! But there are also lots of keyboards which allow you to perform vibrato and more (like sliding your fingers up and down the keys for other effects). Def worth looking into if you love playing keys and want to be as expressive as possible! 😊
I definitely got it on some older, less calibrated pianos around friends' houses. There was usually a wiggle room in the key of about a millimetre after "fully actuating" where I could get the hammer to press a little tighter on the string. A little practice and I could wiggle between that tightened state and a normal sustained note without fully disengaging and striking the strings anew. It was a very subtle vibrato but nevertheless!
kind of ridiculous that Andrew and Rob playing in a big studio is such a content machine.
My favourite thing is both of you coming up with bits and going "this is so you"
8:35 I feel like this was the exact noice that Tom Morello made in Guitar Hero 3 when you had to do like the battle thing
that tom morello scratch 🔥
‘it sounds like the song of my people’ is such an emo statement i love it
I love your guys individual channels, but together, you’re lighting in a friggin bottle! The best vibes and sickest jams. Keep on rocking, guys!
I wish they may low cost versions of these they look so fun! That stuff at the end was brilliant!
I feel like the individual pickups for each string is gonna keep the price moderately high :/
Yeah... I'm thinking it might be possible to make a low cost midi version, but for a real one: pickups, a board that's strong enough to sustain the string tension, all the frets... that all adds up.
@@Milamberinx I wonder how the playability would be affected if it used four strings per octave (three frets apart) instead of six? Playing a major scale starting on first fret of any string would use two frets per string, in the pattern 1/3, 2/3, 2/4, 3/4. Repeating that pattern starting on the next string would repeat the scale an octave up (duplicating the shared note). For a given pitch range, tuning in minor thirds would reduce the number of strings needed by 1/3.
Is it just me, or does everyone else now really want a harpejji?
cant look like a rock star with it tho
@@zekeviews Who cares what you *look* like? This is about sound frequencies not light frequencies.
Well aesthetic matters lol. But you can totally rock with it
It's been around quite a while but never took off. My guess is it would need a dedicated community to evolve playing techniques etc., but this just doesn't happen, because it is the main instrument of virtually nobody on earth.
@@ssm445the fact they’re over 6,000 dollars (for the 24) or 3200 (for the 12) doesn’t help either.
I wish this was around in the 1970s. I could imagine Tubular Bells having one of these on it.
I absolutely love the sound of the harpejji! Cory Henry and Jacob Collier have a couple videos playing on a harpejji but you guys used it in a completely new way. Super cool!
Tom Scott sent me here. It's fantastic to watch experienced musicians picking it up in real time and jamming out a tune at the first time of asking. I'm a big fan of Dream Theater and have loved Jordan Rudess for just as long, my word nearly 20 years. So I'm not new to the Harpejji as a concept, but like the Chapman Stick its a unique sounding instrument that still doesn't have a massive profile. Best thing is as a result of this post, I've found out there was a new Liquid Tension Experiment album released in 2021, it'd been ten years since Mike Portnoy had left DT, so it's been ripe for a reunion for at least 9 years of the intervening decade. I'm just glad that post-pandemic Mike, and John and Jordan have buried the hatchet, to all our benefit.
I mean, 'wow' is the only word i could think of for that funk jam too! The dueling arpeggios sounded phenomenal!
Rob being so happy with himself after doing some triplets is so hilarious to me for some reason.
This really feels like we've hit a new era for Andrew Huang, loving the direction of the content lately!!
This show is exactly what the world wanted from the VERY FIRST modular synth goof off session you recorded. Thanks for hearing and satisfying your viewers’ NEEDS! Yes… a NEED for some of us :)
Stevie Wonder is the first musician I saw playing one of these and he (of course) plays in brilliantly.
It's incredible how talented and how experienced Rob and Andrew are that they can pick up a brand new instrument and just start jamming.
I love how the D at the end of the intro always kinda gives you an idea which instrument will be used in the episode. That's a neat detail :D
1965 Git-Organ used strings and segmented frets to complete circuits. There was also a rotary (Leslie type) speaker to run the organ signal though.
this video has it all... Rob and Andrew being buds... new instruments being learned ridiculously fast... beautiful jams, and bros being nerdy about music. love, love, love it.
The Harpeiji is like if someone said "Let's make a Chapman Stick, but in a way that makes more sense to this idiot's brain ". Killer video! I'd love to see the Harpeiji's make MULTIPLE returns to the show, and maybe consider lending them to First of October?
9:10+ was a beautiful section
This instrument is so interesting!🤯 I wish I had one to try it out.
Ad successful!
😂
Absolutely love this show! Is highly refreshing!
The seemingly infinite amount of creativity and talent you guys have always leaves me in awe. You are truly an inspiration that I think of when I'm trying to be a better musician.
The Harpejji has been on my watch list for quite some time. It’s a very different instrument that frankly just looks so fun to sit down and create with.
At first I just thought it was a pedal steel with more strings, but that's a really cool combo instrument.
Marking with the whites and blacks instead of traditional fret markers is especially interesting. I was thinking it was only useful for people more accustomed to pianos/keyboards, but Rob mentioning how it'd let him arpeggiate any scale without learning how it's laid-out on the guitar makes me think it's definitely useful.
I love how the blue one has a separate bass output like a harp. Although funnily enough while a lot of the comments are saying they want to buy one of these now, the bass sounds from the blue Harpeji have just reminded me of my need to get a bass guitar of my own 😅
really loving this series, y'all have such great chemistry!
This is my absolute favorite show on youtube right now. You and Rob's chemistry, the awesome studio and all the cool instruments on display PLUS the fun challenges make this just a joy to watch every time. Can't wait for more!
7:55 that is a HILARIOUSLY ACCURATE Rob Scallon riff impression.
Funky! What a great jam.
5:51 Flames 🔥🔥🔥 bruh!!!
That last jam was doooope. 🤟 I’m considering getting one of those babies, they look fuuun!! Thanks for another awesome video
Always fun to see you guys try out different things
I love this new series so much. You and Rob are two of my favourite musicians on UA-cam and I always thought that the videos where you worked together were so awesome and special so it's really cool to see this collaboration more frequent right now :D Thank you!
I love everything about this show! Thank you so much for making it, it's such a blast (or boom?)!
This show is so much fun, you two spread so much happiness and joy! God bless you!!
Many hugs ❤️
I've been wanting to get my hands on one of these for the past 10 years! This made me want one even more
This format is the best thing musicians did on youtube. Ever. By far!
I'm amazed by classically trained music virtuosos' ability to play almost ANYTHING and INSTANTLY make it sound listenable. I have trouble getting the right tones out of my voice, and I've been practicing this thing daily my whole life
I wish I had a fraction of the talent both of you have. You guys never cease to amaze.
Props to the camera man drummer!! He killed with the the krispy beats.
Absolutely nailing it with this new series!
it's amazing how fast you guys figured it all out. it was great to watch the process
Man these are so sick. You guys jamming literally made nostalgic for 8bit gameboy games!! So good!
There were sooooo many good themes in this video. Was super relaxing to just listen and let urself float away. Would love to have basically everything as full length songs
Love the jam near the end. Totally has some Aerodynamic Daft Punk kinda sounds to it. You guys rock.
I love these instruments so much and really thought about getting one.
Nice to see a little inside on how you approach it. They sound sooo lovely!
I just learned that the Harpeji exists. What a nifty instrument. It was great to watch you guys build from knowing nothing to making music. I have just enough musical ability to know that I should appreciate your talent. I just discovered your channel, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos.
Thank you guys for doing this series
Great stuff guys. Loving this format.
I could watch these all day. Love this content, great job team!
dude, I heard when these dropped a few years ago, and i loved it, sounds awesome. and ive been absolutely infatuated with seeing people picking this thing up and seeing what they are doing with it!
I absolutely love the harpejji. Never played one but I fell in love with the idea the second I saw it on another channel. All the accompaniment of a piano but the dynamic expression of a guitar. The only unfortunate thing is it is just so expensive
I love the band interactions. Very cool to see you both learning the harpeji
I'm so early!!! I love you and Rob, some of my favorite musicians in general.
Love tuning into these videos every week so much. It’s so fun to see the two of you guys having so much fun together, wish I could have this with my band 😇 (they’re the worst)
Great jam. Love the mellow sounds
i'm so used to bits like the house band being terrible in general media, but y'all's writing (or improv?) & acting really makes it work! great job, so stoked for future episodes!
This is absolutely amazing! Awesome job! 🔥
I keep coming back to this video to listen to that funk jam!! It's SOOOO good I want an entire song with it
The red and blue rob and Andrew are hilarious every time it cuts to them
Uggh right through the heartpejji, this was such a fun ep of Sonic Boom! Loving this show, fellas!
OMG !!! this is truly the best time of my day when i watch your videos ... Super amazing !!! Andrew and Rob your Show is the best !!!!
This format is soooo great! Keep it up ☄️
FR I have never seen these before and I'm stoked you guys were the ones to show it to me. :)
This is becoming such a comfort show for me, I wish I just had an endless stream of Rob & Andrew content to pipe into my eyeballs
I love seeing these! I knew the guy who invented these and got to play some real nice versions way early on. They are so cool!
I truly hope they incorporate some of this next October 1st.
God, you two make music look so easy. I could have enjoyed this going on for hours lol
this is the best show on youtube! congrats guys
Loving this series so far 😂
More please ❤ you two make a phenomenal duo in the music world. Love this
Love the new studio and sonic boom! Keep it up!
Man that bass tone is so good!
5:38 Y'all should make a whole lofi EP with this instrument!
This was so much fun. Loving this show. Keep it up!
Robs bit at 8:36 definitely sounds like a tom morello solo 😂
I love that the last note of the theme is always the important instrument of the video.
I am loving Sonic Boom! Keep it going! Thank you!
This is so sick! I've been waiting for a video like this to show the Harpejji!
Love this series! Please keep this going forever
8:30 the percussive bits kind of remind me of the punctuation sounds that Hammond players will make.
Yeah, I got a Hammond perc vibe from that too. Great sound.
It's been a hot minute since ive watched an andrew huang vid and really enjoyed this one!
this episode was so awesome
their individual personalities and musical talent are already incredble, but their chemistry (musical and just as friends) is so charming and fun to watch
I was always wondering how this thing is to be played.
It is probably any which way you like 😅
Thanks for the vid, guys.
The bass line on that last jam was ridiculous. I really want to play a harpejji now
This series rules so much!
