    Gotta love the background of the UK parks vs ours in the US.
    UK: "This was formerly a monastery and given to a conquering knight"
    US: "This land was formerly a swamp no one wanted to live in"

      Pity it wasn't better run and placed in Somerset, where the real Camelot was supposed to be. The marginally better weather down south would've also helped it. Looking at it, it's obvious that the person behind it had very little idea about the legend. It just comes across as a generic amusement park with some crude Arthurian touches.

    Very nostalgic video for me. Camelot was my local theme park growing up and we used to go there every year in the school summer holidays (not to mention countless school trips as well!). So sad to see the state it is in now, unfortunately it would have taken someone with a huge budget to turn the park around when Blackpool Pleasure Beach & Alton Towers are both not too far away.

Nearly missed my stop but probably helped with the scare maze atmosphere coming in at least trying to figure out where I was XDD

I remember the jousting matches being particularly fun back then. I live pretty close to Camelot so I walk/drive past it all the time. The Knightmare has now been dismantled unfortunately, saw them taking it down last year, I don't think theres any rides/tracks left there now. I used to go all the time as a kid since it was so close, was gutted when it closed down. Me and a couple of friends explored it a few times in 2014, was weird to see what was left of the rides in disrepair, was proper horror movie vibes. After that the security got a lot more strict so we stopped going. Really enjoyed this video, was a nice nostalgia trip. Weird to see such an in-depth video with so many views about something that's just been common place to me throughout the years.

    Update; The entire theme park has been demolished aside from some very small rides and assorted buildings. Knightmare is also gone due to being in too shit a condition to relocate after almost ten years of constant exposure with no up-keep. The landowners want to build houses on the land but it keeps being rejected by the council for whatever reason.

      That's awesome! Are you able to shed light on two things for me? 1. My dad used to go on about a section of the beast where you hurtle at a wall then at the last second turn a corner? True? If so elaborate as when I rode Venom (I was too young to ride The Beast) nothing similar was in place. Also years back I went with a friend and in the shop at the end of venom the shop keeper told us that the beast shut down due to a rider banging there head on the bar you hold onto and injuring themselves, true or false? Thanks 😁

    • @000Mark000
      @000Mark000 4 роки тому +1

      @@mattjcwig In the original incarnation of the beast, the ride was accompanied by automatic lighting effects, animatronics and sound effects.
      The secret was that the ride would do two circuits of the track with different effects on each circuit.
      The turns into and out of the station were both very tight and had no banking. When the ride started, the lights in the station went out and the train left the station at low speed. The turn out of the station was not that thrilling. Likewise at the end of the ride as the train was slowing to a stop the turn into the station was also quite dull. But as you raced through the station between the first and second circuit, at speed, with the station in darkness, and the only light being on the stone (polystyrene) wall at the end of the station, you would have one very severe turn, in darkness, as you entered the station, immediately followed by hurtling towards a stone wall that you very sharply turn away from at the last second.

    Most of Camelot's rides were sold to Southport Pleasureland like you said but they ended up getting much more. Such as excalibur 2, the twister, the pirate ship, the carousel, the ghost train and other smaller rides. They also have a lot of the props and decorations. Unfortunately after 2 seasons of operation excalibur 2 which was renamed to the OMG was scrapped due to multiple problems. The pirate ship ran for longer but was taken apart and now sits as a photo op. Great video! Hope my info sheds some more light for other people interested :)

    Great video, I’ve many happy memories of both visiting Camelot and working there for four seasons. The park was split into three sections and I worked as a ride operator in section 1, which included the Beast/Venom, Pendragons Plunge, the Dragon Flyer and a few others. Driving the Dragon Flyer was great, but the diesel fumes left you feeling rotten by the end of the day, plus you had to remember to fill it up or it would grind to a halt halfway round the track!
    My voice also featured on the Log Flume as King Arthur giving the safety briefing!
    Slight correction on The Beast/Venom: the mountain facade was in place right up until the ride closed in 2001 (I was one of the last to operate it). When they rethemed the ride to be called Venom in the late 90s, there was a walk-through reptile house with live snakes, lizards etc. before you reached the queuing area. This is the bit that closed to make way for the Family Entertainment Centre, meaning the Venom queue was moved outside. The ride was a shadow of its former self by then as most of the original lighting and sound effects had broken or been disconnected.

    This place was magical enough to me! Living somewhat near Chorley, it was a nice and cheap day out that I think I usually went to for my Birthday. I was too young to remember each seperate trip, but I have plenty memories nonetheless. I even have photos of my day out in Approx July 2012 (or thats when my mum uploaded them anyway), and before. One of my first credits ever was Dragon Flier, and I have images of me on it. We have a magnet of a ride photo from the Flume.
    However, I appreciate not all people had a lovely experience as I had, on the balloons, slides, dragon Flier and feeding the animals.
    My sister's boyfriend -- contrary to me -- has had rides spoiled from one of his trips to Camelot, after his experience on Excalibur 2. The basics are that his restraints unlocked midway through the ride and him and his mates had to hold him in when it went upside down. Now, he just won't go on any ride. This has made things quite awkward between him and our family, cause our family want to take him to Disney, and he thinks it won't be fun if he doesn't go on any of the rides.
    Case in point: I think this place really held its place in the Northwest British population, and anyone who has been to it, is probably not totally impartial to it.

      Well, while it may not be illegal it certainly isn't exactly a safe environment. Its currently slated for demolition for a housing development (as it is owned by a company called story homes who are trying to get planning permission the last time i checked) so the site isn't exactly being taken care of and i imagine they are trying to avoid giving people the opportunity to be injured and attempting to sue them (not that the trespasser would win anyway). On top of that not every trespasser is nice. plenty would just want to cause damage. And if not that there is the risk of squatters.

    • @jayzo
      @jayzo 5 років тому +3

      Camelot was one of the first abandoned places I visited. Unfortunately, we had kids running riot so decided to leave after about 15 minutes. Just as we were leaving in the car we saw a large crowd of kids bolting it out the front entrance followed by at least one (I didn't see any more but I'm sure there had to be) security guard. We didn't actually get seen despite parking practically in the car park. Unfortunately, the next time we came they moved the security hut to the very front of the site.

    • @OatmealDonk
      @OatmealDonk 5 років тому +3

      @@jayzo i mean, in all fairness that is trespassing and your lucky to have gotten away with it once. :-P
      but on a serious note the big problem places like this have is that stupid kids will try and climb the ride structures which are already rusted and dangerous as it is, before leaning over guard rails and stuff to get pictures. thats the big reason they bother putting security on is because if somebody injures themselves they could try and blame story homes. its just not worth their time.

    So much nostalgia. We went here a lot as kids on visits to my mum's family in Liverpool from Scotland. My first upside down coaster was Tower of Terror, no shoulder restraints in those days! And thus my lifelong love of coasters was fixed. We also went to Morecambe quite a lot, another British classic resort. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Guess this means I'm getting old when you remember parks like this in their heyday......

    This type of thing always makes me wonder how the gullivers parks do so well… If you look at it from a business point of view, by making the age limit for guests up to 12 years old, that massively decreases the possible customers for the park. But they are still expanding, and still only a family run business

    I come from Blackpool, one of the competitive places, but me and my friends used to go there all the time. That place was my childhood! I asked my friends, that have now grown distance to me, if they remember any of it. Im the only one that I have contact With That remember that place like the back of my hand. We used to go on the caterpillar ride with some of my friends younger siblings and then We, the older ones, would go on things like the whirlwind. I never actually went on the nightmare. The last time u went was some where around 2010/2011. I could see that they were having trouble because barely anyone was there. We used to be the only ones left at like 5pm or something. We used to feed the ducks and stroke the donkeys in the petting zoo. The most funniest time was when my friend started talking to the ducks. Im acting/sounding as I'm old. Im not, I'm 15.
    Btw, I have no idea how late I am to this. I just really wanted to share my experiences of this theme park that was such a good part of my childhood. I will always miss going here.
    How come I can remember these things, but I can't remember simple maths? Why is my brain like this 😂
