  • Join us on Expedition Extinct as we look at the one year Millennium Dome Experience to celebrate the third century in the year 2000. This odd mix of museum and theme park received huge amounts of criticism before, during and after the event and ended up one of the weirdest most expensive sponsored exhibits ever created. Planned to be the first wonder of the 2000's it will ultimately a huge failure. Later it was reborn as the o2 Arena and Dome and the original experience was forgotten.

Fun fact, the bins, store shelves & other items were sold to Gillingham Football Club, so those yellow bins at Gillingham were once scattered around the Millennium Dome.

Whatever its failings, it is hard to believe any child would rather be at school than off for the day at the Dome. I remember being beyond excited when I was 13 and visited. Now working in a creative industry I can completely understand the complexities of getting a project of this scale right. More credit should be given to the project simply for its vision and sheer existence, I can't see anything on this scale being done again in the UK anytime soon.

I remember visiting the Millennium Dome towards the end of its life. It was around December time i went, it was cold, it was wet, but it was an experience. The whole thing was very confusing, and as you stated there were a fair few exhibits that did not work. I think because it was towards the end of its life, they didnt bother to repair them either. I recall there being a bit about the human body, with singing brains, and they were wearing hats. I think i have a photo somewhere with one of them in a fez. I played on the giant table football, which was impossible to play with so many people. I reckon i was about 16/17 when i went there. The gift shop had drastically reduced everything they were selling. tshirts were marked down to £2 each, keyrings for 25p. things like that. I still have a few bits at home from it. The following year after it had closed i returned to the dome to do some photography for a college project. I remember how bizarre it felt. the outside of the building just felt like a distant memory. I was the only person to get off at the station, and as i took the escalator up to the ground level, it just felt so odd, because the last time i was there it was so bustling with life. But now it was just deserted, the ticket booths remained, but everything was gated off. no one was around apart from the odd person taking a photo of what once was. I'm glad i went. It was part of history that i'll fondly remember.

I was lucky enough to attend the Millennium Dome twice - and I loved it. The circus show in the dead centre was very avantgarde but lost on me as I was 12 at the time.
The body zone, despite being odd looking on the outside was quite fun, in the head was a number of brains laughing to Tommy Cooper jokes; but also had an animatronic heart that thumped and stopped, which was also linked to the set of lungs - and showed how laughs, coughs and cardiac arrests looked like.
The money zone, was interesting as you walked through a tunnel that was lined with £50 notes that amounted to £1 million.
They also had a play zone, which had a section that made it seem like you were walking in a typical British seaside.
The work zone, had a nice film and then you had a load of team building games like a giant football table - i enjoyed it.
I wished i went through more zones when i could.

2000 was the best year of my life, the best year of my childhood! I was 12 years old, but man how I miss it! Playing Nintendo 64 with my friends, going to the theater to watch the Pokemon and other movies, watching cartoons, drawing & coloring Pokemons mainly, playing basketball every day, exploring the forest and mountains behind our neighborhood with my neighbors, riding the bike and exploring our town with my neighbor friends, going to my towns yearly fair with my friends, the Christmas and Halloween holidays were the best at that time and also the family parties like birthdays, weddings and sweet 15s, etc. etc. me and my neighbor friends were all around 12 years old and we were like 12 kids in total. It was the peak of my childhood.
My childhood reminds me of the movies Sandlot, Goonies, IT and all those movies where kids used to get together and have fun. We had no worries in life, other than school and some homework from school.

      It was crap.
We queued for ages to get in, then spent hours in queues inside.
We went in the early days when it was overcrowded, expensive and the opening hours were quite short compared to later in its life.
As a child I found many of the attractions a bit strange and beyond me. The play zone was great but queues were crazy.
I then lost my Auntie and a member of staff insisted I went to lost children...I sat there for over two hours with nothing to do. They wouldn't even let me go to the play area whilst we waited.... When I was finally 'rescued' the guest services manager told me that they would be buying a TV and games console + other things for lost children as I was the first one to spend that long there. Mad to think they didn't actually have anything to cater for children in lost children!

Freinds visited the Dome on August 13th 2000 (day after one turned 57) and both really enjoyed it (particularly the Blackadder and the Tommy Cooper brains). They still go on about it to this day, particularly when surreal art it bought up. Dome was well received by those who visited it and made its money back, shame the press attacked it as it not as many as they wanted visited.

Fundermentally time and money were the problem for the dome. A rushed production to greet the mellinium without a lot of money to spend didn't create a strong experience. It also seems that there was no real central development team co-ordinating with sponsers, meaning each zone didn't connect with the others. Does kind of feel like a number of convetion centres next to each other actually.

I watched this video as I hoped it would jog my memory and help me remember my trip, but unfortunately even though I was 11 at the time I remember very little about the visit.
It was difficult to navigate your way around and ensure that you'd seen everything. It was somewhere between a science museum and a sort of theme park, but without rides (except the one mentioned).
The thing I remember the most are the claw machines outside which I managed to win three Pokémon plush toys, whilst a small crowd gathered around me.
Then one of the workers interrupted me by opening the machine, bending the claws backwards to loosen their grip and to more tightly pack in the prizes.
Maybe that's where all the profit went!

The only reason the Millenium Dome struggled was because the media and politicians at the time delighted in criticising it to the extreme and people in general jumped on the band wagon to slag it off even though they probably hadn’t visited it. I didn’t visit at first due to the adverse publicity but then decided that it was worth a try. My wife, son (8 years old at the time) and I went in the last month before it closed........ It was brilliant. We all loved it and the vast majority of people there (and all who I subsequently spoke to that had actually been to it) really enjoyed it. The quirkiness and diversity of the attractions was what stood out. The show in the centre was magnificent. Due to the adverse publicity, by the time we went it wasn’t that busy and we could get to see everything and to top it all off the merchandise in the shop was being sold off cheap as it was ending soon and they had loads of stock left due to lower than expected visitor numbers.
A classic example of unwarranted media and political criticism ruining what could have been a commercial success. So many people missed out on a memorable experience because of this which is a great shame. It was in fact a superb example of British creativity and vision. Just remember the adverse publicity and criticism of the 2012 olympics before the event, and how when we actually saw the opening ceremony and the games themselves that criticism evaporated. That is essentially what happened with the Dome but only those who went, got the chance to see what it was really like. Of course it wasn’t to everyone’s taste but it never really got the chance it deserved.
    Rant over......... :-)

I don’t recall seeing E.T or going on the ride, which sucks because they sound like the best parts! Thought you mite also be interested to know that The London Eye was only meant to stay open for 5 years but they decided to keep it probably realising they made a mistake only having the dome open for a year.

It may have been a commercial failure but I've just been beaming throughout this entire video because it's just unlocked a torrent of memories I'd thought forgotten from when I was 5 years old and spent the day there with my family. To me at the time it was brilliant. I still have my photo with E.T. somewhere. It was also the first time I witnessed 'Mr Bean' speaking elequently and acting somewhat normally which blew my 5 year old mind and was more shocking to me than learning that santa wasn't real.
I also remember that 'Magic seed' film which amazed a younger me when at the end the screen lifts up and (gasp!) the girl we just saw on film is actaully there, beckoning us into the next part of the exhibition and the infinite orchard. Young me was easily impressed.

I remember that all schools for 2000 got the chance to offer a select amount of tickets to students. The one I was at set them aside for the best performing and I'd already been to Florida twice. This was late in the domes life and I seem to recall most of the students who went were rather nonplussed about the whole thing. I wouldn't get to go to the dome till long after it became the O2 as I think my parents decided saving for another Florida trip was a better use of their money.

From what I hear though, it actually wasn't that good despite the technology being top notch at the time! I worked on the construction of both the millennium dome and the London eye ready for the 2000 celebrations. I remember turning up on site of the dome one morning and protesters had scaled one of the huge yellow masts and refused to come down. There was a lot of opposition over the dome being built.
I took my family to it after it opened and had the same opinion as you on the experience. I can’t really put my finger on what it was like, it was just an unusual experience, too big to complete in one day. Never been back there but enjoyed my day with my family there. Took lots of cam corder footage of the day and still have the souvenirs.
I was supposed to go to the eve of the opening but a couple of months before, I decided to go to Epcot, Florida instead, I’m really glad I did, Disney really know how to celebrate. Really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed the Millennium dome, often the people that criticised it were the ones who didn't even go to it. I was only 11 and was in awe at the size of the dome and things inside. It was great. The Media only gave it a bad rep, as they were left out in the cold on the press launch on NYE. Most people who visited the Millennium experience, loved it, myself included. I will always call it the Millennium Dome, you can go to an arena anywhere but the dome will always be remembered for the Millennium.
I love the nostalgia of the Millennium dome and have fond memories of it. I've got a few cool pieces from it, including part of the body zone from an auction.

At 18:22 you state “You had to pretty much take the tube to get to it” as if that were a bad thing, but walkability and an absence of car traffic are generally desirable area attributes, and metro access is something many venue owners vie for. Like, if you cut all public transportation routes to your theater district, you probably wouldn’t remain your city’s public transportation director for much longer.

I kept thinking how the building looked so familiar, but couldn't remember hearing about the millennium experience before (not being from or even having visited the UK), thinking theres no way something s big would just be abandoned or something, such a big OH moment when mentioned it became the O2. First really heard about the place with my very beloved Les Miserables 25th anniversary concert dvd, and hearing about all the massive events held there since, and all the major artists that have performed there. my favorite group (Ateez) actually performed there last year, and I was so proud of them for getting so popular that they sold out the venue. It's cool that for once one of these places is still in use even if it's now very different, and has built up a legacy of it's own, with new spectacles that can leave audiences amazed and be the place for long lasting memories.

The only thing I enjoyed about my visit to the Dome, age 14 I would imagine, that I remember was being fascinated by the engineering and architecture of the building. I remember spending looking up at the ceiling/roof a considerable amount of the time. I remember that former Monty Python Terry Gilliam had submitted a design for ‘The Body’ zone but it was rejected for being to graphic. A Terry Gilliam designed Body zone would have been 10x better than what I remember, it probably would not have had a peculiar and invasive smell that seemed to permeate the Body zone. Actually, the most memorable thing about the dome for my visit was the fact we were there the same day as the failed Diamond Heist. We thought it ignites have been part of the experience. Again this would have made it much better.

Oh so that’s what the storyline to the centre show was! I enjoyed the show and music and you could tell there was conflict but it didn’t make much sense. It was very weird, I mainly remember the body exhibit, the jewels and the money exhibit. When prompted by your video some of the other exhibits come back to me but didn’t stick particularly well. It’s a massive venue and I haven’t forgotten walking for hours and my feet getting sore with no where to really sit down. I think we would up finding a quiet spot and sitting on the floor at one point!
Still it’s one of those experiences where, if you went, you are one of 6 million people in the world who got to see it. The exhibition was very much a product of it’s time and of what the UK was like. In the end it was an artistic undertaking and statement marking the new millennium and anyone who thought that would make money or even break even was highly mistaken!
