  • We tried the most popular noodle dishes in Sarawak:
Sarawak laksa, mee kampua, mee kolok, and mee sua.
We loved them so much that we decided to learn how to make traditional handmade noodles.
We had so much fun learning unique techniques, and even held a noodle making competition with our friends from ‪@DodoExplorers‬

Shout-out to Mdm Tang and Mr. Ting for showing and allowing Steve, Mike and GG to try making those delicate mee sua aka "long live mee". Well done, Steve, you are a fast learner indeed even though this's your first attempt. This video is so comical and l've been laughing despite watching it for the 3rd time 😂🤣😂🤣 Mdm Tang is such a friendly and funny lady though she's loud and in a way strict in her teaching. A master must be strict to her disciple then only will he/she learns. It's a wonderful experience for you guys and will be a memorable one too. What a magnificent mee day !!!
P.S : FYI, the kampua mee taste delicious because lard is added.

Mee sua is the longevity noodles of the Sibu/Sarawak Foochows (one of the Chinese dialects), served in traditional Foochow red wine and ginger chicken soup. It is eaten for posterity and prosperity on birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, New Year and all auspicious occasions.
Sibu/Central Sarawak has the largest Foochow population in the state but they have migrated all over now. There are Foochows in Sitiawan, Perak and Yong Peng, Johore and they have their own mee sua, kampua noodles and kompia but they are not the same as the ones here. Of course, ours are a lot nicer! :D

Mee Sua is the softest thin noodle in the world, sometimes they add a little red wine in it, chicken, mushroom and egg in the soup....looks simple but...the taste is awesome! Glad that you have tried Sarawak Laksa and Kolo Mee. The name Kolo in Hokkien dialect meaning 'MIX' in olden days people use to say 'Mee Kolok' or 'Kolok Mian'. Kolo mee actually comes with few version depend on the town, city or near the sea-side/fish market, example there is Kolo Mee Seafood version, Kolo Mee Original (White) version, Soup Version, Kolo Mee Black Bean Sauce version, Kolo Mee Black bean sauce with black vinegar, only wantan and minced meat version, ....and there are Halal version that serve with Chicken instead of Pork in East Malaysia only. My personal favorite is the red 'char sau' sauce version come together with wantan soup, people in Sarawak eat this almost everyday, because it is cheap, simple to prepare (fast serving), and ofcause it is delicious! Enjoy!

That laksa looks very much like curry mee. Laksa doesn't have beancurd & potatoes in it.
Laksa is always serve with shredded chicken, sliced egg omelette, bean sprouts, prawns or shrimps, cilantro and mihun noodles.
Several good places to have laksa in miri. Sinced you loved char kuey teow, you can go to the open air market for that. Can only get that style of cooking there. Go before 10am.
    Enjoy Miri guys... 😘✌️🍻

P/S : I had Kampua, Kolo Mee & all other noodles when I was in Kuching last month. My instinct & taste bud told me that they(Kampua & Kolo) noodles are similar to Wan Tan Mee. It’s only the serving preparations differs. Correct me if I’m wrong, anyone?

    • @nashobek3785
      @nashobek3785 2 роки тому +4

All three noodles have different texture. Wanton mee has that straight thin noodles.
Kolo mee more thicker & mostly a bit curly & straight noodles.
      kampua mostly straight noodles.
Kampua originally doesn't come with minced pork. Usually it's just comes with char siew but some places do with minced pork. Sibu is the place to get great kampua.

Kolok me campur or special has more meat and some extra thing they put inside it (dependa on cafe. Each cafe diffnrt). There is mian xian (wheat noodle "threads" - mee sua in Hokkien, I think) and there is mi xian (rice noodle threads). I thought they were the same thing for a long time, but now I know better.
There's a charming story about the mi xian (rice noodle threads -- not the mee sua, the wheat noodle threads), about what they call "crossing the bridge mi xian" (guò qiáo mǐ xiàn). Something about the young wife of a Confucian scholar bringing a well-insulated pot of hot chicken soup and rice noodle threads, meat, vegetables, doufu sheets and an egg all separately on a tray acros⁰s a bridge to a pavilion where the husband was studying 24/7 for the official Imperial examinations. The aim was that the scholar could just drop all the ingredients into the hot chicken soup when he felt hungry and needed a small rest and some nourishment. Everything cooked in the still scalding soup in a few minutes.
Classical Chinese fast food! As noodle dishes often are.
Yunnan provincial cuisine, on the border with Vietnam. Similar concept to Vietnamese pho.

If you are heading back to Kuching, please try Poh Lum"s laksa at Chong Choon cafe, if you have yet to...it's the standard for Sarawak laksa 😋😋😋
been going there for 24years! still so good!
Since Ivana likes Kolo mee, may I suggest she try "black vinegar Kolo mee"? something unique that I enjoy in Kuching(Chopstick Food Centre, Pending).
FYI, food generally in Sibu is on the oily side, so it does not truly represent how the original Kolo mee should taste like. Also Kuching folks prefer their Kolo mee "springy"( QQ texture) while sibu folks prefer their noodles soft/"over-cooked"😅

Fishballs and tofu are not typical ingredients. But the broth looked about right. Getting the laksa in Miri a try too. I would be happy to recommend a couple of good places.

Char Siew sauce is the oil collected during the process of cooking the bbq meat literally know as char siew (the red meat) The oil dripping down from the meat during the cooking process. The oil is red because of the ingredient that were used to marinate the meat. It give the kolo mee a hint of sweetness and making the dish more fragrant.

That laksa doesn't look particularly traditional, but glad you enjoyed it:):) you'd want to have it at its most basic, with beehoon ( rice vermicili) prawns chicken and eggs. Hope you guys get to try it again :D

The reason why kolo mee is hard to find is because, they have to use that particular type of cringkly noodle only made in Sarawak.

For the laksa, different place different taste Bro. It depends on the ingredients they use esp the prawn paste and coconut milk.

Sibu was known as New Fuzhou because majority came from there (Hokchiew in Peninsular and Singapore, but smaller in numbers). Thus why you have food not usually found in Peninsular.
    Chinese people in MY
Hokkien-Amoy/Xiamen/Fujian (Medan, Penang, Perak, Phuket, Kedah, Singapore, Klang, Malacca)
Canto (Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, NS)
Hakka (Taiping, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak, Sabah)
    Teochew (Johor)
    Hainan (K Terengganu)

And if you reach bintulu, go to tanjung batu beach..there u you can see a beautiful sunset and many more…eat some bbq and can get a fresh coconut juice, and also small zoo near that,as i mention to you last time..dont forget to go to night market located at the old bintulu town,
previously, that location is a old bintulu airport..according to the guiness wolrd book of records yr 1981, this airport is the only airport in the middle of the town last time..now this area is under development and the tallest building in sarawak also there, The peak…hope i can be your tour guide in bintulu…if im free when you here…😝😉
