what the hell does Hydra has to do with Lovecraft? Hydra is basically marvel's Neo Nazis with a twist, they don't want to summon a great, insane god to rule the world
XaeolHD a lil confused about what you mean but let's take a dose of reality for a sec...can anyone or anything in the real world drive anyone insane by just looking at it ?
I'd like to see a Doctor Who episode where Lovecraft is shown the wonder and terror of the universe. If done right, it could be a very good episode a la "Vincent and the Doctor." At the very least, we'd get to see HPL meet an Ood!
+TinyFoxTom Be a cool premise, dealing with eldritch abominations. And they'd definitely have to include a scene that addresses how HP was, like... super, *super* racist. That would be a fun Doctor moment.
Yeeksquilack Even funnier when you consider the line from the Mountains of Madness where they were saying that the Elder Things may have been plant/animal/fungus abominations from space, but they were men, dammit! Maybe that and the Shadow Out of Time would be the result of Howie learning a lesson in tolerance.
One of my favorite tributes to H.P. Lovecraft's work is from Blizzard Entertainment in their MMO World of Warcraft. The Old Gods in WoW capture perfectly the essence of what Lovecraft wrote about. Nightmarish, madness, insanity, horror, dreaming/sleeping, sunken city, interdimensional, anxiety, whispers and the surreal of it all.
although recently in the story it seems like the old gods aren't that terrible, could you imagine what could happen if Azeroths world soul transformed? it's the only reason there is arcane magic on Azeroth not to mention it is the planet itself, if it became a titan then potentially everything and everyone would be destroyed, ironically the old gods are the only ones preventing everything from being destroyed.
Absolutely! That was one of my favorite parts of classic WoW. The only difference between Blizzard's Old Gods and Lovecrafts's is that Blizzard's deities are blatantly malicious, while Lovecraft's are largely indifferent to human culture and society. What I loved most was that each Old God was the physical embodiment of a particular aspect of human psychology, specifically something mortal races would try to avoid. In my perception C'thun was the Old God of Fear, Yogg-Saron was the God of Death and Madness, N'Zoth was the God of Corruption, and Y'Sharaaj was the Old God of Anger and Wrath. Anyone have other perceptions? This is a topic I haven't dicussed in a long time ^_^
think of this food for thought. we have only discovered like 7% of the sea all in total. we dont know whats down there. our governments are spending billions to go to outer space but haven't even fully discovered whats in our water yet alone screthed the service. the Mariana's Trench could hold SO much more than we think. Its weird how our metal submarines can barely get close, but sea creatures can. I know we sent echo waves down there and even that took a while to bounce back. maybe that wasnt even the bottom. maybe it bounced off of the cthulhu's head or the kraken. Atlantis may even be real, or R'Lyeh. no rude comments i just really want to discuss this with some open minded people
The reason that it is seen as silly is because we have sent numerous robotic submersibles to explore Challenger Deep and many other deep places. And something as large as Cthulhu or the Kraken would (probably) have been noticed by now. But I agree with you, there are many unexplained events that have occurred in the abyss and it is by no means implausible for it to be the result of a gargantuan creature. And even if Earth doesn't have a Leviathen, then Moons and Planets like Europa, that have massive Oceans, or beneath an icy surface, are wonderful candidates.
+Moregasm the Powerful Ever hear the story of the blind men describing an elephant? Why I bring it up is that the robotic submersibles may have indeed seen Cthulhu or the Kraken, but they were so immense and what was seen did not stand out from the surrounding backdrop. Like the story of the unknown island that was found only later to discover they were on the back of a gigantic whale.
How powerful is Cthulhu ? What can he do? Is he an omnipotent god that can destroy everything by just wanting to? Or does he have some kind of weakness which make him a god but still able to get killed? Does he have a clear motivation? Does he only wants to destroy the world? Also, didn't Cthulhu have 2 daughters ?
Technically speaking there are beings within the mythos that are more powerful than Cthulhu. Yog Sothoth as an example, he is basically a being that interconnects all time and space at one point, and in fact is Cthulhu's father. The only daughter I know of from Cthulhu is Cythylla, whom I don't know much about since I'm not sure what source material she is from.
"How powerful is Cthulhu ?" Not that powerful when it comes to others. "What can he do?" Various stuff. "Is he an omnipotent god that can destroy everything by just wanting to?" He or rather it is an alien he is not a god but their technology (great old ones) can appear magical to humans. "Or does he have some kind of weakness which make him a god but still able to get killed?" Yes he can be killed since he is not a god lol or a demon nothing in lovecraftian mythos is based on fantasy since Lovecraft was an atheist. Nyarlathothep is based upon Nikola Tesla who in those times seemed like a magician thats why Lovecrafts work was published in sci-fi magazines not to mention he was fascinated with multiverse theory, space travel, time travel, energy manipulation and physics in general. And its kinda funny because to others Lovecraft appeared as a person with low self esteem yet in his letters you can see he was suffering with some form of megalomania and superiority complex.
That is the question one has to ask just how dangerous was Cthulhu for Yog Soggoth to even care. See one you dive into the mythos a piece the puzzle together thru several tales you learn it was the elder things or yith that fought Cthulhu. Even as powerful as advance as they were they couldn't kill him but they knew where he got his power it was in the stars around the earth see the earth is alien to the milky way strange aeons ago it belong to another cosmo body. Only thru the summoning of Yog Soggoth can he move the Earth but the question is why would the the key the guardian the gate of he that watches over several realms care so much to allow the elder ones to pass thru the gate. The consequences of there actions was that yes Cthulhu weaken and his city sunk below the sea but the change in star position would lead to the frozen lands that the elder ones thrive in making humanity the winner by default like the bacteria that thrive while no one was around to wipe it clean.Cthulhu is so powerful it made yog soggoth open a gate under what terms we do not know.
Lovecraft wrote The Call of Cthulhu at the waning years living in New York. The guy was a racist and he hated that the "pure Colonial New York" had been destroyed by modernity and the streets filled with immigrants which only worsen his anxiety. So in a way, Cthulhu is the embodiment of hate, evil and making others suffer--which only makes Cthulhu more disturbing and scary.
I always felt the stories were created as to represent his fear of the world outside. Lovecraft never really went out much and would avoid the sun like the plague and when there was much more immigration, he feared the world would become chaotic due to the alien feelings Lovecraft already had. And it had been documented that his views on society and the world did become much more open and accepting after he got married and moved to the city. He was still a complete hermit but his fears of an integrated society leading to destruction as did his ignorance towards other cultures. He never really hated anyone outright as much as he was basically afraid of the world in general and the mysteries within it.
Yeah, I probably went overboard with that description of Cthulhu. I really should have said, Cthulhu, much like most of his works and other monsters, represent the fear of the unknown.
So Cthulhu is a manifestation of all Lovecraft’s fears. Therefore Lovecrafts dark ego that slumbers beneath the ocean of his self control, while the people represent the ever growing anxiety within him that fear the return of Cthulhu, Lovecrafts inner most demon.
Just some observations... 1.) there is very strong evidence that the pronunciation may actually be Thew-lou, given that fact that there was never a concrete answer given by Lovecraft. 2.) There is also a lot of evidence that the Necronomicon actually existed. It's possible that the work bore another name and Lovecraft simply changed it to suit his needs. Regardless, such a work's existence has been surrounded by much controversy and lives have been lost simply by association with its potential existence. Anyway you choose to look at it, the ideas created by Lovecraft have given both the creature and the book of the dead a reality all their own. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss either of them.
Never has there existen an Necromonicon of the old gods, maybe of Christian, Muslim, Budhist or any other devils and jins but the old gods were made up by Lovecraft. If im not mistaken wasnt the Necromonicon a book used by Satanists or does the media just call the kids beliving in Cthulu satanists?
are you associated with the "glitching queen?" either you both got some of your material from the same place or I'm listening to her lifting some of your dialog word for word
The necronomicon is an extremely important book in skyrim. It has been sought after by the dedric prince of knowledge hermius mora. This dedric prince is seen by talking to you through small dark portals with green tentacles coming out. He has a dimension (that I don’t remember the name of)
Don't forget the vieled reference in the Heavy Metal movie. The central evil was Uhluhtc represented by the green glowing orb called the Loc-Nar (The "Den" segment has ancient temple with cult members chanting Uhluhtc, Uhluhtc)
Cthulhu is a representation of how little and irrelevant we as humans are, and how to something like Cthulhu we are powerless to do anything against it, it also represents anxiety and the constant worry that a greater power will one day destroy everything
I'm a fan of Lovecraft as well. An amazing author who really could spook the "YOU KNOW WHAT" out of you. Starting to discover Lord Dunsany as well. I was wondering if you ever checked out the The Terror on AMC. I hope you have. I think you would enjoy it.
Absorbent and yellow and porous is he who dwells in the cyclopean city of Bikini Bottomth full of buildings likes of which humanity can't comprehend. He himself inhabits what seems to be an eldritch fruit around 15 meters high and 5 meters wide .I have seen it myself and shall not describe in as much detail as some might want me too for I am too disturbed to remember such horrific imagery even though they always seemingly linger in the depths of my subconsiousnes. The building seemed to have been there for years and was reminiscent of a rounded cone as well as decorated with all sorts of non euclidean geometry .Alongside was another house-like monument .One made of pale stone, rectangular and resembling a face of a horyfying forgotten deity from which malignity started feeling the air. Below it was a rock of the Precambrian age .I didn't focus on it too long for what I think I saw underneath it reminds of the most obnoxious of night phantasms I had when I was merely a child.A form changing star shaped figure with unimaginable amounts strength trying to lift the rock off of itself using it's appendages.I ran like a madmen until I found another monument full of terror . Translucent and filled with air(though I wish it wasn't) . It was a scientific marvel of unknown origin , but of a known purpose.A giant living rodent with brown fur and yellowish teeth feeding upon it's young was what this building housed.I fainted at that very moment.Last thing I remember of this unusual dream experience that to this very day seems so vivid when I look back upon was a blank stare from a crab like creature.
FlyingGothicSheer Thanks. :) I was just trying to parody H.P Lovecraft's writing style by describing spongebob's world , but maybe I'll try writing something serious someday.
You seriously just typed that out after watching this video? Good job, the whole spongebob story could definitely be turned into a sci-fi nightmare with an ongoing collection of unending madness that's for sure, I don't think I ever thought that deeply about it, but have often had thoughts about some of the disturbing backstory of how certain ideas came about on that show, especially certain episodes. Keep writing, you could be an amzing sci-fi writer someday, I was impressed by that little bit you typed above, and would like to read more.
Nobody. He just went into hibernation when the cosmic energies that sustained him began to ebb. That's why he will reawaken 'when the stars are right.'
Of all the words to stumble on you stumble on "Necronomicon"? That might just be the easiest word in the whole video. "Necro" is Greek for "Dead" or "Death" or whatever, "Nom" is just a fancy word for "eating" and "con" is on the end of almost everything nowadays.
Fun fact: On the video game Killer Instinct (2013) there is a character called Spinal which is a ghost skeleton of sorts, what does this have to do with Cthulhu? On his shield it seems like it's the face of this mythical beast, suggesting he was powerful enough to annihilate this massive monster.
This isn't a bad video and you did an okay job getting puts across, but you say things like, "Lovecraftian horror, it's a genre" without talking about how and why. No mention of cosmic indifference.
The title is "what is Cthulhu" not "what is Lovecraftian horror" you don't need to know or understand Lovecraftian horror or more concepts in order to know what Cthulhu is
A lot of great artists die in poverty. It's sad that our society can't appreciate its greatest artists. (Yes, I believe that writers and musicians are artists.)
Funnymouth cthulu is the reason we have dread and anxiety he comes from another dimension he is a ancient being his true form is to much for the human brain to comprehend
tommy longbow You should get that checked out.. I would make a joke about how you are the chosen one or something but that would be mean since I think you are serious...
From my recollection of the Equinox movie that I watched last month, the creature that destroyed the house in which Fritz Leiber's Dr. Waterman character was running for his life, looks to be have been based on Cthulu :-)
this is the simplest and clearest explanation on this website that doesn't say "i have 2 separate videos cuz *snorts* Lovecraftian Lore is different from Cthulhu so i'm not gonna explain anything to you despite Cthulhu being the most popular thing so you probably searched that term to learn about all of Lovecraft"
Some people think Cthulhu is organic living being. Their wrong. Cthulhu is a fear of being small, being lone and insignificant in this world. Cthulhu is unstoppable force of fear. His not a creature, but an idea.
they say if Cthulhu appears right in front of you, your heart would skip a beat and right away you'll be paralyzed with extreme anxiety attacks, which can kill you by the way thats insane 👀
Thanks I'm glad you have cleared that up as it would have been impossible just to read or listen to the stories.........by the way I don't know if you know but you put your head on upside down this morning , bye bye then
While this is technically interesting the real concept of Cthulhu is that the universe has greater beings than humanity. All encompassing powerful entities who are horrific to us and are an illustration of how little we matter to the universe as a whole. It's a concept that has been borrowed from many times in other horror like The Mist, Rick and Morty or the Alien franchise to name but a few. Getting bogged down in the octopus/dragon/man worshipped by a cult aspect slightly misses the point though I'm sure that mythos is a lot of fun for those who engage in it.
Cthulu was a bioengineered octopi in Lovecraft lore. This Cthulu is not the warrior; he is the father. Cthulu is like Jason in Jason and the Argonauts. Almost as if Conan the Barbarian, sort of, too, Cthulu. Cthulu is immortal. If human Beings are bioengineered from snakes, like in the Garden of Eden, Cthulu is also a literary metaphor, a religious symbol for the first man. Cthulu is also a different man, a man named after his father, a man known as the greatest warrior the Cosmos will ever know, could handle Andre the Giant. One is a man of about average height, the other is tall, he is the son, at least 20 cm or 21 cm in additional height. That's the legend.
Cthulu is name of lunch special that the Old One Chef Gordon Ramsay will serve for the Feast of the Cosmos in Hell's Kitchen which is located next to Hotel Hell, Motel Hell, and the DMV. All those worthy and pay for their reservations will dine on fried calamari pasta made from the corpses Cthulhu and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Any H.P. Lovecraft inspired game done right should leave the player with some of the following. Confusion, feeling tiny and insignificant, sacred of what might be in water, scared of what might be in space, or all of the above
Bloodborne did a good job using the whole Lovecraftian/cosmic horror genre in ways that almost all other game failed to do so. Any fans of Lovecraftian/cosmic horror should give it a shot, or if you don't play video games you should at least watch some gameplay or lore videos about it.
I hear that Cthulhu is the god of evil, destruction, and madness, but when I read the book everyone goes insane just from Cthulhu's appearance because it was the early 1900's so I dout that would work with people today, like it would be scary but it won't just make you crazy.
Cthulhu is a perhaps a metaphor for any dangerous, powerful figure in society whom some people worship. For ex: people who admire serial killers or people who vote against their own interests for crazy sociopaths...
I’ll ask you one better “Why Is Cthulhu?”
FEAR Clan now the name "Drax the Destroyer" sounds like a Cthulu minion.lol

How? Just Because Marvel has Hydra doesn't mean its unoriginal. Jesus. Hydra was a fucking greek myth.

Cthulhu was more or less, born of fear. Sounds better than hate, because unlike hate, fear is what can cripple and stagnate civilizations.
I always wonder what Lovecraft would have thought of us making Cthulhu plushies....
I'm a big Lovecraft fan thanks for explaining it in a manner my mundane-none geek family and friends can understand keep up the good work

Bob T. Nelis Thats interesting....
My fiend thinks it's cth-ul-a-hul...bruh
could you cite me some sources regarding the evidence of there being a Necromonicon
Bob T. Nelis
LOL!
Yea it’s so sad when writers only get famous after they’ve died, especially when they’ve lived in poverty.
True
Isn't the necranomicon in the evil dead?
It is , Old Ones And Outer Gods connect everything
@Rudy Campos The books are different. They are just named the same because the name is epic.
HR GIGER also talked about the NECRONOMICON. He also was very interested in the occult, and gives us a deeper view into the underworld.
are you associated with the "glitching queen?" either you both got some of your material from the same place or I'm listening to her lifting some of your dialog word for word
+Kryciss John Quincy Grizzly Sam Adams We likely found the same info. Wikipedia, articles, there's only so much out there.
my apologies. i placed that comment in the wrong window. haha. it was another gentlemen. you're good

The necronomicon is an extremely important book in skyrim. It has been sought after by the dedric prince of knowledge hermius mora. This dedric prince is seen by talking to you through small dark portals with green tentacles coming out. He has a dimension (that I don’t remember the name of)
also if you look at him you'll go insane
I like the theory that the reason for that is that he's a 4th-dimensional being.
Don't forget the vieled reference in the Heavy Metal movie. The central evil was Uhluhtc represented by the green glowing orb called the Loc-Nar (The "Den" segment has ancient temple with cult members chanting Uhluhtc, Uhluhtc)
Cthulhu is your lord and master. This is all you need to know.

Very concise and informative explanation without being boring or too long. Thank you for making this video.
I might know we're it is :)
We're he sleeps and waits for the right time to eat
Cthulhu is a representation of how little and irrelevant we as humans are, and how to something like Cthulhu we are powerless to do anything against it, it also represents anxiety and the constant worry that a greater power will one day destroy everything

I'm a fan of Lovecraft as well. An amazing author who really could spook the "YOU KNOW WHAT" out of you. Starting to discover Lord Dunsany as well. I was wondering if you ever checked out the The Terror on AMC. I hope you have. I think you would enjoy it.
chthulu to me is just squidward but taller and green with tentacles on his face
This officially must become a creepy pasta!
If squid ward had near-unfathomable power and intelligence and was so ugly that just looking at him caused people to go mad.
HP love craft looks like mark Zuckerburg.
So who sealed Cthulhu under R'yleh?
Nobody. He just went into hibernation when the cosmic energies that sustained him began to ebb. That's why he will reawaken 'when the stars are right.'
@@legionaireb really?
@@user-ts2tm7zu1b Yeah, r'yleh.
Looks like the drawing of an octopus I made when I was 10
Hail Hydra!
Cthulhu fhtagn!
The Drunken Coward nice to know but didn't that book appear in adventure Time
Anyone here after watching Underwater?
I want you to do "What is Shub Niggurath?"
hey he isn't a god he is a "great old one"
who are basically gods for all intents and purposes, just scarier
@@JK-zd3md Not all of them are gods. In fact, Great Cthulhu himself is merely the high priest of Azathoth.
Fun fact: On the video game Killer Instinct (2013) there is a character called Spinal which is a ghost skeleton of sorts, what does this have to do with Cthulhu?
On his shield it seems like it's the face of this mythical beast, suggesting he was powerful enough to annihilate this massive monster.
there was 666 commets and I don't like that number so I made it turn to 667 😀
...But thats an odd number
@@shabr1ri it's even now
Squidward's ancestors???
This isn't a bad video and you did an okay job getting puts across, but you say things like, "Lovecraftian horror, it's a genre" without talking about how and why. No mention of cosmic indifference.
The title is "what is Cthulhu" not "what is Lovecraftian horror"
you don't need to know or understand Lovecraftian horror or more concepts in order to know what Cthulhu is
A lot of great artists die in poverty. It's sad that our society can't appreciate its greatest artists. (Yes, I believe that writers and musicians are artists.)
one does not simply resist the power of chtulu
Wut if Cthulhu is prosiden the God of water
Lucario_ Knight Poseidon*
Lucario_ Knight he would be alive and maked lots of tsunamis its possiblr thas cthulhu can make the world end
The Great Old One "Nodens" is based heavily on Poisiden
BROSIDEN THE RAD GOD OF SICK WATERS
Funnymouth cthulu is the reason we have dread and anxiety he comes from another dimension he is a ancient being his true form is to much for the human brain to comprehend

NovaMusic me
From my recollection of the Equinox movie that I watched last month, the creature that destroyed the house in which Fritz Leiber's Dr.
There are actually two copies of the necronomicon known to exist, but they're under lock and key.
Who'd you bet on if it was Cthulhu & his crew vs The Borg Collective?
Cthulhu: "Society fears me."
Society Now: Haha 150mm Cannon go bang, 20mm for brrrrt, Torpedo go boom.
The necronomicon does exist I own a copy. U can buy it almost anywhere.
When i think of cthulhu i remember the eye of cthulhu or brain of cthulhu from terraria.
Netheryk
Well, Moonlord. His Brother
Some people think Cthulhu is organic living being. Their wrong. Cthulhu is a fear of being small, being lone and insignificant in this world. Cthulhu is unstoppable force of fear. His not a creature, but an idea.
The Legend hese not alone im his friend
People think he was recently spotted in Miami in the wake of the Hurricanes...
they say if Cthulhu appears right in front of you, your heart would skip a beat and right away you'll be paralyzed with extreme anxiety attacks, which can kill you by the way
thats insane 👀
Cthulhu is an analogy for the chaotic universe we love in
Thanks I'm glad you have cleared that up as it would have been impossible just to read or listen to the stories.........by the way I don't know if you know but you put your head on upside down this morning , bye bye then
While this is technically interesting the real concept of Cthulhu is that the universe has greater beings than humanity.
The entities of the Mythos are like residents of an expensive highrise. Cthulhu is just the doorman in the front.
Well by the name of lovecraft nothing is impossible
1:26 This Guy looks like Mark Zuckerberg.
Any H.P. Lovecraft inspired game done right should leave the player with some of the following. Confusion, feeling tiny and insignificant, sacred of what might be in water, scared of what might be in space, or all of the above
Necronomicon was the old names...its was renamed Comicon recently.
The Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy brought me here
Necronomicon is also a book in ash vs the evil dead
Cthulhu can not die he just Grows back
I didn't know lovecraft died before he got to enjoy his success.the same thing happened to brom stoker.
Cthulhu is meant to represent beings larger and more powerful than our mind can comprehend
I remember fighting his eye and brain in terraria
Bloodborne did a good job using the whole Lovecraftian/cosmic horror genre in ways that almost all other game failed to do so. Any fans of Lovecraftian/cosmic horror should give it a shot, or if you don't play video games you should at least watch some gameplay or lore videos about it.
I hear that Cthulhu is the god of evil, destruction, and madness, but when I read the book everyone goes insane just from Cthulhu's appearance because it was the early 1900's so I dout that would work with people today, like it would be scary but it won't just make you crazy.
That monster at the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 looks just like this!!!
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing
Cthulhu is a perhaps a metaphor for any dangerous, powerful figure in society whom some people worship. For ex: people who admire serial killers or people who vote against their own interests for crazy sociopaths...
The real question is what isn’t Cthulhu
