Great job! My brother in law is an engineer who worked on space robots. He told me something that changed my view on perfection "Don't let perfection be the enemy of completion"
Appreciate the transparency and those to admit to their mistakes and use them as learning tools more than those who put on a facade of perfection. I see other's mistakes and learning tools for myself. I actually want to build my own version of something similar to this now. This was a really cool idea.

I’ve never seen a similar project before, it’s really clever ! I enjoy watching you explaining your small mistakes, thanks for your honesty ! Keep up the great work, my friend, Greetings from Belgium !
This is awesome! For magnets I like to use a red sharpie and blue sharpie to keep the poles straight. Just take a magnet, put a red dot on one side and a blue dot on the other side. Grab your next magnet, put a blue dot on the side that sticks to the red side of the first magnet, put a red dot on the side that sticks to the blue side of the first magnet. Repeat for all your magnets. Now, when it’s time to install, place all of your magnets in part A with the red side facing out. Then place all of your magnets in part B with the blue side facing out.
The few times I have used magnets, I have just stuck them together and glued one side down with both magnets there. When it’s time to attach the other side, I already have them oriented to put adhesive on the outside of the pair(opposite poles attached) and close the lid/door on top of the magnet sandwich. I have misaligned them, but always kept polarity correct
Thank you!!! I am happy to help! I am excited to see what people come up with and improve upon this design! Share pics in the Veritas Tool Nerds fb group!
This was absolutely delightful. I did see your post on the facebook group. Didn't realize you were the Bat Cave guy so it was a delightful surprise to see this video pop up. I will be receiving my very first Veritas tools today. I picked up the box plow plane and the skew block plane. I hope to do fun playful builds like this. I wish I saw more build videos like this.

Thank you!! I am going to try and do more, I miss building. I got so involved in tool reviews I wasn't building anything. Gotta find a healthy mix of both :D
What a fantastic project, a fantastic outcome and a wonderful video. I loved watching the progress, and laughed out loud with the ‘catty wompired?’ expression - never heard it before. Thanks Jamie
I thought it was a commonly used phrase but I am learning now, after posting, that it is not hahaha I am starting to wonder if it is a phrase my dad made up and made me believe was real lol and thank you!!!
This is so so cool. You could take a little bundle of wood with you and make something really cool anywhere you want. Very awesome. It is like a pochade box for painting.
I love how you left the “imperfections” in but it still looks amazing! Also, I like the words of encouragement as I do try to be too perfect sometimes and it’s great to see that “good enough” still looks spectacular
Most of my cases are catty-wampus that's what hand planes are for. Love this project and tool kit. Perfect for club meets, shows and woodworking in nature. Don't worry what you think are imperfections now will be character in future.
I didnt even think about taking it to meets!!! Thank you! I have one coming up on Nov 1st, its goin with me now lol And thank you! I agree about imperfections!!
Oh man! the idea itself is to me, mind blowing. great job on the design and I appreciate a non perfect project, 99,9% of us never do a "perfect" project. It's easy to get lost in the constant stream of videos with everything perfect. I'm subscribing!
As a fellow wood worker (though admittedly one not quite on your level yet), it is heartening to see someone just having fun and making something they want to have and use, and being okay with certain things not being or going perfectly. That is a fantastic case, and I hope it accompanies you on many adventures. And thanks for the inspiration! :) You're giving me ideas over here. Haha.
Thank you!! I agree! When i started woodworking i got discouraged watching youtubers make perfect projects and mine not coming out that way. I lost alot of joy in woodworking because of that then decided. Forget that, im having fun and thats what matters :D And thank you!! I am excited to see what people create and come up with after seeing this project!!
This is one of the most impressive wood working videos I have seen on UA-cam. I'll be waiting for more. Thanks for sharing this video for all of us to see.
That thing is super cool !!! And thanks for the reminder that I do this hobby for enjoyment and that not everything always turns out perfect. Sometimes I feel like I'm trying to compete with the youtubers I watch and that's not at all what it should be about.
What an excellent project! I love it. You know, taking about "perfection." I think that thinking things have to be perfect all the time keeps people from actually tackling projects. You also did an excellent job of hand re-sawing. Very nicely done!
I agree!!! We need to get back to the FUN of woodworking not the "i have to be perfect to build" that is so far from the truth!! And thank you! re-sawing was probably my least favorite part of this build lol but it felt really good to know that I shaped every piece by hand. I usually go to the power saws then hand planes, so this was cool to try!
Thank you for being humble! I always appreciate when I can see the mistakes someone makes, because it allows me to realize that not every project has to be the most amazing thing ever! That said, this is an awesome build. I have been wanting to do something similar
Amazing project and it looks wonderful, it doesn’t matter if is perfect or not, important is it works and you had much fun building it! I like it very much, very good idea and work👍
Great video, especially like you’ve admitted making mistakes. I apprenticed under an older gentleman that after seeing me get upset over making a mistake said, the only way to avoid mistakes was to do nothing.
I didn't make any plans for it. I'm not a big fan of making plans because the builder typically has to modify them to their own tools and the materials they want to use, esp for this build. So give it a go, draw it out on paper and go for it! Most of all, have fun!!! God Bless and thank you!!
Technically, there's no such thing as "perfect", it's only in the eye of the beholder. Be careful as to what woods you burn, some are toxic. Great build, cheers :)
True that!! And thank you! Its funny and not funny at the same time, but WHILE the shavings were burning I was like.... oops are these the toxic one or not? hahah
I think this project is wonderful! Just wonderful. Thank you for acknowledging your "mistakes" too; love to see how you correct them. Just a suggestion: weigh the finished project (ideally without hardware) and the garbage bag full of sawdust and shavings. That would be an interesting ratio!
I'm not a woodworker but I do have some hand saws and planes. I use them for when I get stressed/depressed. I just go grab a lump of wood (normally 2x4 offcuts) and a plane and get stuck into making shavings. The action of just going back and forth, stopping every now and then to sharpen, just seems able to grab my worries/fears and throw them out the door.
Yes!!! I do that alot. I plane a board. When I'm upset in anyway, I grab the plane I know is ready to go and just plane a board. That is a coping skill and that is one of the things that lead to the founding of Plane Wellness. Realizing how much that helped and how much peace woodworking in general gives me. People need to experience that. Thank you for sharing!!
when chiseling out the waste for dovetails you want to slowly work both sides of the board removing material slowly. Paul Sellers has a good video on dovetails where he uses a chisel for the waste removal
Thank you! I did that but I think I went to far on one side before going to the other. The other ones didn't have a chunk bust out like that haha maybe I wasn't paying as much attention on that one 😅
Thank you! That is the woodpeckers auto line drill guide. I tried the miles craft and wolf something ones on Amazon before and wasn't happy with them. I like this one so much I sold my drill press haha
Beautifully done! I could really use your help with my dovetails. I've managed to complete two dovetail joints using my Veritas saw, but each time the pins don't line up perfectly with the tails. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Should the saw be beveled when cutting the pins (like the tails are 1:7) or should it be "mitred"? Will this improve with more practice? 🤔 I hope this makes sense 😂
Thank you!!! I'm not the best at dovetails but when you cut the pins the saw should be straight not diagonal like the tails. Dovetails deff take practice. Keep at it you will get there!!!
that is a huge compliment!! it is funny too because i was going to make a little housing for the router plane as a nod to the Studley and his no 1 houseing but ran outta time lol
Ya I have a mini cross cut saw. I'm adding a mini gents saw soon and I'm going to try and make a mini rip saw. I will be building a seperate till that attaches to the outside of the case :D
What an amazing project! I have questions! 1. How heavy is the toolbox when fully loaded? (I get it’ll be a bit heavier once you add the saws/tills 2. How ergonomic are the mini tools, especially the chisels? It seems like they would be super awkward to use.
Thank you!! Great questions!! 1. I haven't weighed the chest yet but maybe 15lbs it doesn't feel heavy at all 2. Most of them are relatively comfortable to use. I will say that none of then are comfortable after long use. For example, I wouldn't use the hand planes to take a board from rough to smooth lol and I deff wouldn't use them on like lignum or ipe. I plan on mostly building things outta pine, maple, basswood. I also use the chisels, shoulder plane, and mini router on big projects alot but not for heavy use. Mostly clean up I hope that helps!!
@@BatCaveCreationsthank you, that’s great! FWIW, if you think it’s 15lbs, then maybe that antique handle will be fine! Especially since your screws are going into hardwood 🤔
Awesome build. Did you get your minuture planes and chisels from Lee Valley? I use a fish tail chisel to clean out the inside side of my dovetails. My rationale for buying a blue spruce chisel. My dovetails will make Rob Cosman cry but to me they are good enough for me and my projects
Thank you!! All of the minis are from Lee Valley/Veritas besides the mallet and hammer those are maker made by my friend Bob Herr. And I have a Mini saw from my friend at Spring Green Saws (Charlie). I was debating on a fishtail chisel. Never tried one. Is it annoying to sharpen? Rob Cosman would also cry looking at my dovetails hahaha
@@j10948 hahah that'd part of why I wanted one! But then my friend told me about the Japanese ones and for the price I was sold on goin that route haha one day I'll buy and try a fishtail
I bought the Rockler Medium Tool bench when it was on sale for I think $450 but... I do NOT recommend this bench. The top is held on by 4 screws and it racks something fierce. So I need to put a lot of work into it. Ive had it a few years now and just haven't found the time to make it stronger. I do have a cabinet system underneath that helped a bit but not by much. and now the top is only held on by 2 screws cus the others fell out. Really, the bench just needs a massive overhaul. I got a different one a friend found me at an estate sale, I believe it was an old Walmart brand or harbor freight brand or something, use to cost like $200 and it is way more stable than the Rockler bench. If you have to buy vs build for whatever reason, just know that you will have to still put work into beefing it up or if you can bolt it to the wall and the floor and you'll be good :D (Id do that if it wasn't for needing to record hahaha Sorry for the rant :D
@@BatCaveCreations My bench is a Harbor Freight. It racks really bad, I haven't tried to fix it, but looking at it doesn't have a good place to put angled trusses. the one I really want is a Lie-Nielsen, but with shipping and tax it would cost $4500. Next in line is the Highlands Woodworking shipping and tax is $3000+. then another smaller HW is $2800 w/tax and shipping, Maybe when I payoff my SawStop, I'll be able to get either of the HW. I'm getting pretty old(82) to be buying such expensive tools, so says my wife of 63 years.Yep, been married 63 years!
@stephenclingerman4865 congratulations on 63 years that is amazing! (And uncommon these days but that is how it should be!) I haven't been able to try any of those but I'm gonna assume for the price they would be good! I have been debating on the Grizley one with big metal legs. I know we are woodworkers and everything should be wood but I like that the legs are adjustable for my unlevel floors. And we can still add a wood cabinet under. It's just under 1k with shipping I think. That may be an option also?
I just looked at the Grizzly benches. The one I would get is the T34091 - 80" 9-Drawer Euro-Style Butcher Block Workbench. It’s on sale for $814.50 until 10/21. But even without the sale it’s $905. Either way its $199 freight. Looks like a really good one.
Thank you!!! What I do is cut in a triangle ish motion. Handle down, sawing up to follow the line. Then move the handle level and saw flat to saw down a bit then tilt the handle back down, sawing up again to follow the line. Once that is well established I will tilt the handle up and saw down, then level out, then tilt the handle down to saw up, then level out, so on till I am done. This has worked for me, idk if it is the best or not but that's what I do hahaha
Haha I tool alot of breaks 🤣 but I'm guestimating 45 min to an hour? That's what it felt like. Imma time it next time, tho!! Haha I don't have the right tools to make those cuts. Need a bigger saw even possibly one of those big resaw frame saw things haha
I drilled from the top using a forstnerbit and underneath the workpiece i have a scrap board. They aren't perfect I think 2 or 3 have some tearout on the top tlnut thags worked well for me through the years

Maybe I'll try the pen and make it a video so if it works it's a good how to and if it fails its entertainment hahahah
Great job!
My brother in law is an engineer who worked on space robots. He told me something that changed my view on perfection
"Don't let perfection be the enemy of completion"
It's that very attitude that has given us all of these crappy space robots. I'm so sick of not being able to buy a good space robot.
YES!!!!! I love that, Don't let perfection be the enemy of completion!
This is halarious!!!! I think space robots need tighter tolerances than my tool briefcase hahaha
Appreciate the transparency and those to admit to their mistakes and use them as learning tools more than those who put on a facade of perfection. I see other's mistakes and learning tools for myself. I actually want to build my own version of something similar to this now. This was a really cool idea.
Thank you!!! I fully agree! I would get discouraged early on (and even still today sometimes) seeing all the perfect projects. I don't want to do that to others!!
Deff build one! I am excited to see how people expand on this idea!!!
I’ve never seen a similar project before, it’s really clever !
I enjoy watching you explaining your small mistakes, thanks for your honesty ! Keep up the great work, my friend,
Greetings from Belgium !
Thank you!!!
Omg, I’m sorry but to me, that case is PERFECT ❤❤❤❤ I love it so much. Incredible work!
Thank you so much!!!!! :D
Awww look at you being all mini and stuff 😁
Hahah these are the only mini tools!!!!
A little disappointed there was no boy-coat 🤣🤣
@jjwouters6436 THERE IS THO!!!!!!!!! Slacker didn't watch the full video hahahaha
And fantastic suggestion by the way
This is a great suggestion!!! Thank you so much! I will have to use that cus I deff don't want to make this mistake again hahah
I have these tools sitting in a drawer because I have no idea how to store them. Now I do. Great work!
Thank you!! I'm the crazy Veritas Nerd hahaha those are great tools you will have fun with them. Post when you get them and what you build! I wanna see!
Very impressive and cool! I haven’t seen anyone using mini tools before, except for those mini planes used by luthiers. I am looking forward to seeing what you make with them.
Thank you!! I am looking forward to putting then to use!!
Love the build vid! I like the tool reviews, they're how I found your channel back in the day, but project vids are def more enjoyable for me
Thank you!! And yes!! I travel quite a bit and miss woodworking when I do so wanted to come up with a solution :D
I love how you left the “imperfections” in but it still looks amazing! Also, I like the words of encouragement as I do try to be too perfect sometimes and it’s great to see that “good enough” still looks spectacular
Thank you!! And YES! It is ok to try to be perfect but don't let that take away from the joy of the build or prevent you from completing builds! :D
Very nice done! I already built my own but your’s makes me rethink that a second one wouldn’t be bad 😜 thanks for sharing! 👍👏
Hahaha the more the merrier 😆🤣 and thank you!!!
Most of my cases are catty-wampus that's what hand planes are for. Love this project and tool kit. Perfect for club meets, shows and woodworking in nature.
Don't worry what you think are imperfections now will be character in future.
I didnt even think about taking it to meets!!! Thank you! I have one coming up on Nov 1st, its goin with me now lol
And thank you! I agree about imperfections!!
Awesome! Love the built-in vise 🤙🏼
Thank you!!!
Oh man! the idea itself is to me, mind blowing. great job on the design and I appreciate a non perfect project, 99,9% of us never do a "perfect" project. It's easy to get lost in the constant stream of videos with everything perfect. I'm subscribing!
Thank you so much!! And I agree! Dont let the hunt for perfection take your joy in woodworking!!!
Your video's are always inspiring my friend. Beautiful work 👍🏼🤙🏼
Thank you!!!!
This is such a good idea! I'm inspired and impressed. Thankyou for sharing.
Thank you!!
Forget that, im having fun and thats what matters :D
And thank you!! I am excited to see what people create and come up with after seeing this project!!
This is one of the most impressive wood working videos I have seen on UA-cam. I'll be waiting for more. Thanks for sharing this video for all of us to see.
Thank you so much!!
That thing is super cool !!! And thanks for the reminder that I do this hobby for enjoyment and that not everything always turns out perfect. Sometimes I feel like I'm trying to compete with the youtubers I watch and that's not at all what it should be about.
EXACTLY!!!! I use to do that to and I was missing out on so much joy stressing over every joint and screw. Forget that! have fun!!!
And thank you!
Awesome - a pochade box for mini tools - what a fabulous idea. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!!
@@BatCaveCreations very inspiring!
@@pinkiewerewolf thank you!!!
Lol, the magnets! That's something I would have done also! Comiseration is salvation! Thanks for sharing.
Haha thank you!!!
That's pretty and cute. And I liked how you used wood with sentimental value
Thank you!!
Great work
Thank you!!
Thank you for being humble! I always appreciate when I can see the mistakes someone makes, because it allows me to realize that not every project has to be the most amazing thing ever! That said, this is an awesome build. I have been wanting to do something similar
Thank you! And I agree! More woodworkers need to show the mistakes and be real about their builds.
You should deff build one! Functional and fun!
Thanks for sharing this video, hope to see more build videos from you.
Thank you!! I hope to post more too! I miss building lol
This looks great, Jamie. Excellent work.
Thank you!!
Beautiful work! It's ok to make mistakes (Who doesn't make them?). It's how you deal with them that counts.
fully agree!! Thank you!!
Could you go over all the little tools inside the box in a future video? I love this build and hope to make one similar to this at some point!
That is a great idea I will deff try too!!!
Amazing project and it looks wonderful, it doesn’t matter if is perfect or not, important is it works and you had much fun building it!
I like it very much, very good idea and work👍
I agree!! and thank you!!!
That is a really cool idea. It turned out beautifully. Great job.
Thank you!!
Good idea, beautiful execution.
thank you!!!
That's a fun project. Thanks for sharing it.
Great video, especially like you’ve admitted making mistakes. I apprenticed under an older gentleman that after seeing me get upset over making a mistake said, the only way to avoid mistakes was to do nothing.
Spot on!! I am going to save that line and use it lol Thank you!!
I save my wood shavings for the winter to start the fireplace
YES! I usually save a few grocery bags for friends and fam! One day i want a spill plane for that reason too haha
I like your attitude to woodwork
thank you!!
It was a really interesting project. Cheers, mate!
Thank you!!!
This is lovely--thanks so much for sharing your idea, enthusiasm, and mistakes (!).
Thank you!!!
Stunning piece, dude! Really fantastic work!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you!!!
Stay safe also!!!
This is SO SO cool!
Thank you!!
I gotta get the plans and make one.
Thank you. Stay Safe and God Bless.
I didn't make any plans for it. I'm not a big fan of making plans because the builder typically has to modify them to their own tools and the materials they want to use, esp for this build.
So give it a go, draw it out on paper and go for it! Most of all, have fun!!!
God Bless and thank you!!
Awesome build!
Thank you Chief!!
Thank God. Someone who isn't looking for absolute perfection (which btw... I think you're selling your self short. This is awesome).
You inspire me
Thank you so much!!
Impressive, most impressive
Thank you!!
That is beautiful. Well done.
Thank you!!
Very nice tool-case!
That's really cool!
Thank you!!
Technically, there's no such thing as "perfect", it's only in the eye of the beholder. Be careful as to what woods you burn, some are toxic. Great build, cheers :)
True that!!
And thank you! Its funny and not funny at the same time, but WHILE the shavings were burning I was like.... oops are these the toxic one or not? hahah
third time's the charm. Same mistake happened to me with magnets🤣. Great build btw !
Haha I'm glad I'm not alone! And thank you!!
I think this project is wonderful! Just wonderful. Thank you for acknowledging your "mistakes" too; love to see how you correct them. Just a suggestion: weigh the finished project (ideally without hardware) and the garbage bag full of sawdust and shavings. That would be an interesting ratio!
Thank you!!
I really like that idea, and that would have been fun! I'll have to remember that for next time! Thank you!
i love this, thanks for sharing
Thank you!!!!
I love it. Now I want to build one. I love it.
Thank you!! You should! I am excited to see how people expand on this idea!
Perfect is as prefect as you can be ❤
thank you!!
Great work, and what a fantastic idea!
Thann you!!!
Inspirational.
Thank you!!!
Brilliant! 😮 ❤
Awesome. All I need to do some woodworking in the woods is lug around a briefcase AND a huge table to mount it to.
Yay!!! My first negative comment on this video!!! :D
Look for an adjustable auger bit. You'll always have the right size forestner. 🤔
I have one and it never seemed to work as well as I wanted it too haha
Yes FUN!
Nice kit, I like it! Where did you get your power drill attachment? That's just what i need.
@@BatCaveCreations Thanks, Jamie, you rock! 🙂
Studley! :)
that is a huge compliment!! it is funny too because i was going to make a little housing for the router plane as a nod to the Studley and his no 1 houseing but ran outta time lol
Gonna comment before I forget. For the algorithm!!
Hahaha thank you!!
You need some kind of hand saw. If you can't fit anything else in you might consider a blade holder for saws-all blades.
(I get it’ll be a bit heavier once you add the saws/tills
2. How ergonomic are the mini tools, especially the chisels? It seems like they would be super awkward to use.
Thank you!! Great questions!!
1. I haven't weighed the chest yet but maybe 15lbs it doesn't feel heavy at all
Mostly clean up
I hope that helps!!
@@BatCaveCreationsthank you, that’s great!
FWIW, if you think it’s 15lbs, then maybe that antique handle will be fine! Especially since your screws are going into hardwood 🤔
@roberthahn8555 I realized that after the fact hahah and I used bolts so 2 bolts would have been strong enough too 😅
Awesome build.
@@BatCaveCreations H’mmm didn’t think of that!. Not really sure how too. Just bought it cause it’s so cute 🥰
@@j10948 hahah that'd part of why I wanted one! But then my friend told me about the Japanese ones and for the price I was sold on goin that route haha one day I'll buy and try a fishtail
Anyone who never made a mistake, Never Made Anything 😅, never a truer word spoken-Julie
Hahaha SO TRUE!!!
Love this project! One question not about this: I know you bought a good full size bench. What kind is it, and how much was it?
If you have to buy vs build for whatever reason, just know that you will have to still put work into beefing it up or if you can bolt it to the wall and the floor and you'll be good :D (Id do that if it wasn't for needing to record hahaha
Sorry for the rant :D
(And uncommon these days but that is how it should be!)
I haven't been able to try any of those but I'm gonna assume for the price they would be good!
@@stephenclingerman4865 ooh I didn't see that one! I'll have to check that out too! Thank you!!
Super cool build! Any tips on how to resaw with a hand saw without drifting off the line?
Thank you!!! What I do is cut in a triangle ish motion. Handle down, sawing up to follow the line. Then move the handle level and saw flat to saw down a bit then tilt the handle back down, sawing up again to follow the line.
Once that is well established I will tilt the handle up and saw down, then level out, then tilt the handle down to saw up, then level out, so on till I am done.
This has worked for me, idk if it is the best or not but that's what I do hahaha
Btw, how long did it take to resaw one of those ash boards? I’m really curious!
Haha I tool alot of breaks 🤣 but I'm guestimating 45 min to an hour? That's what it felt like. Imma time it next time, tho!! Haha
I don't have the right tools to make those cuts. Need a bigger saw even possibly one of those big resaw frame saw things haha
Great project...great job! Catty Wampii. 😹
Hahaha thank you!!!
How do you keep your dog holes clean?
I drilled from the top using a forstnerbit and underneath the workpiece i have a scrap board. They aren't perfect I think 2 or 3 have some tearout on the top tlnut thags worked well for me through the years
Would love to see a pattern for this
I'm sorry I didn't write anything down just kinda flew by the seat of my pants hahah
@BatCaveCreations it's the same method I use haha
@gumby549 hahaha it's my favorite
I am trying my best to make a version of this idea but to carry full size tools. I think the biggest problem will be just how heavy it will be
I have thought about that too and if I do imma make it a suit case style on wheels! Then open it up and still have a bench and everything! :D
Niceeeeeee
